Despite me "making" them go, we all had a great time and picked 3, ate one, picked 3, ate one and so on and so on and so on until our bellies and our boxes were full of berries. At this visit (mid-July) there were many varieties of red raspberries, blueberries, and yellow raspberries ($3/lb), a bouquet of flowers (50 cents to $1 a stem), and the freshest green beans ($1.50/lb). Other veggies and herbs were also available. The garden is surrounded by rolling hills and backed by snow capped mountains. Just beautiful! Less than 30 minutes outside of the city, but a world away.

Thankfully blue bee farms was open on a Sunday so we decided to go with them, it also happened to be the last day of harvesting. There was a tent with the sweet owners who handed out little baskets and buckets to help you fill blueberries, they also had little wagons which the kids had a blast riding and playing with. My niece also loved that they cute hats to chose from. They guided us on where we could get the best and most blueberry which at the time was behind the house. We had so much fun, our whole family enjoyed the time eating and picking blueberries. The owner said it was pesticide free so we could eat the berries straight from the tree. Some of the family who were skeptical about having a good time, had a blast filling up their buckets. The blueberries tasted so good too! Would definitely recommend coming here whether for fun or if you just want some fresh yummy blueberries.

The lady told my father to pick from a certain bush which he misheard. We thought we were at the right bush because I had asked beforehand for my father and I. She continued to come over to us micromanaged us, and told us we exceed the picking limit which she stated was 10lbs but it was actually 20lbs (advertised on her price & details sign) and we were weighing in at 11lbs. So she made us feel like we picked too much grapes, on top of being shunned for not being in the correct spot which we apologized for several times. Because of her demeanor we ended up leaving after because she told us to take our business somewhere else. I thought this was a pretty rude introduction as this was our first time coming. I understand there was a misunderstanding on our part, just wish the circumstances were different and we were treated kinder and humane! Hoping people still go to this establishment for nice produce! The parking lot was dirt and small but was able to accommodate all the cars there. The employees were nice and informative. They have two different types of peaches. Red Havens are sweet and Reliance are on the tarter side. It's a smaller farm but there were plenty of trees full of ripe peaches. The peaches were very fragile so it's important to be selective on which ones you pull off the branch. It's $3 per pound and we got a boxful for around $22. We also got a huge zucchini for only .50! I love the idea of farm to table and enjoy supporting local businesses which made Douglas Farms a perfect pit stop while driving through Sauvie Island.

The staff were incredibly friendly, the setting was beautiful and we loved all the wildflowers and sunflowers around the farm. It was a pretty hot day, so the lounge pass was definitely worth it. Also for closer bathrooms and drinks. I also really appreciated how the event staff went above and beyond to help me resolve a ticketing issue. They were kind, helpful, and made sure everything worked out. We really loved what Topaz Farm is all about and the whole atmosphere of the place. We'll definitely be back for more events and we're looking forward to checking out their meats and produce too. I highly recommend catching a show out here, you can tell a lot of care goes into creating a great experience.

We found out about this hidden chestnut orchard on the last weekend of the season! I emailed the…read moreorchard to confirm their hours of operation for U-pick (since it was the final weekend and rain was in the forecast). I received a quick response from Andrew Robello, the owner, he confirmed they are open, rain or shine! I was so excited to take my mom on this adventure! Next day, we arrived bright and early. We were greeted by Andrew's mom at the bucket station, she was such a sweetheart. Such a nice family! As we ventured into the chestnut grove, more families arrived. This is a fun outing for the whole family. Just keep an eye on the kids. Bring kitchen tongs or thick garden gloves to pick up the chestnuts. If you've never seen the needles of chestnuts, you're in for a prickly surprise! Be careful and get ready for a fun scavenger hunt! You can easily fill your bucket within half an hour! This can be good or bad. Good because you know what you're doing and you arrived at the perfect time to collect fresh dropped nuts. Bad- because you're picking up any nuts you find and not checking for signs of rot. Since you're buying per pound, I recommend you do a quick squeeze and eye inspection for insect holes. If you hear or feel air from the squeeze, it's not fresh or about to rot. If you want to keep your chestnuts for several weeks, it's best to find the freshest nuts. Confession time....we spent nearly 2 hours leisurely enjoying the hunt. As we realized how much time has passed, we stumbled up an area scattered with fresh jumbo nuts! Holy moly! Guess what we did.... We dumped our bounty and filled our bucket with the fresh jumbo nuts! We kept some of the best looking smaller nuts. We had fresh chestnuts for over a month and shared it with friends and neighbors. Since this review is so so late, I can't remember the exact cost and weight. I do remember they gave us a nice season end discount. They are so sweet! Regardless, the time I shared with my mom scavenging the chestnut groove is a priceless memory I'll always have. The best…read moreI've found in Portland come from Cascadia Chestnuts' stand at the Saturday Portland Farmers Market at PSU. Cascadia Chestnuts is a certified organic orchard growing select French and Italian "marrone type" chestnut cultivars. If you've been to Italy during the holday season and bought a bag of chestnuts from a grizzled vendor roasting them over a grill, they were likely called "marroni." The ones Cascadia grows and offers are the real deal. My Sicilian family would roast chestnuts in the oven on a cookie sheet, after first giving the shells a small slice so they wouldn't burst, and then snack on them after the dinner was finished. We had a tradition on New Year's Day involving the first roasted chestnut we selected. If it was good and peeled easily, your coming year would go well. If it was difficult to peel, expect difficulties. If it was partly rotten or even thoroughly rotten, well, you can figure out the rest. Delicious, quality chestnuts, locally grown. And no bad ones in the bunch.
