I liked them alot. But, now I have to file a complaint to The Oregon Board of Dentistry for a refund for my crown on my back tooth. It wasn't done correctly, came off last night just flossing and odor started under it. It's been only 3 years and now I have to have it re-done again by an Emergency Dentist because he wasn't comfortable just gluing it back on because "It was a shitty job and should of lasted way longer." I would of op-ed out couple other procedures done in the past treaments had I known what the bill was gonna be and Its the second or third time now from procedures they said insurance covers ended up half or full out of pocket like $1,000 night guard. read more

I have been going to Pearl District Dental for over 20 years. Up until Dr. Mika stopped practicing it has been outstanding. Eli was also great. In the past three years there have been different people there every time I go. There is no consistency. Today I knew I was going to have a deep cleaning and that it would be more expensive. Tia, the hygenist was over 20 minutes late. She worked on me for about an hour. There were x-rays taken that I knew would add to the cost. When I checked out they told me the total bill was $1400 some dollars and that I would have to pay over $900. I did complain and an adjustment was made, but I still think I was duped. My son went there for a dental exam. They tried to convince him that he had gum disease and needed treatment that would cost a couple thousand dollars. They also tried to sell him sleep apnea equipment (he's a healthy 27 year-old). My son then goes to my dentist who confirms that his gums are fine. The worst and most tricky/shady/expensive dentist I have ever been. I had an appt with Dr. Mika for X-rays and cleaning, I only saw the doctor for 3 minutes, the majority of the time was spent in an office with the "finance" guy that self proclaims to be a financial expert and just talks to you for hours trying to sell you ridiculous things and extra services that you "need". I ended up over-paying for a regular cleaning that my insurance covered, they charged me for "extra cleaning" and other fees that they were not able to explain. I left confused, angry and I will never be back. I'm sorry for all the people that have been here in the same situation. What a shame !!! read more

PDD has a clean, upscale atmosphere. One dentist on staff and the hygienist is friendly, professional and makes efforts to remember our conversation from the previous visit. Hygienist and dentist check glands and face to look for abnormalities and do a phenomenal cleaning. There is a push for extras (teeth whitening, Invisalign, retainers, mouth guards), but I'm used to up-sales and politely decline if my insurance doesn't cover it. Recently, I was over-charged for a routine dental cleaning and had to pay a portion out of pocket, although my insurance covers 100%. Following up with the Front Desk on that right now. Only big negative is their inflexible cancellation policy: although they cancelled on me, I was charged when I cancelled our re-scheduled appointment. I understand the business decision behind this, but wish it went both ways. Nevertheless, I'd still recommend. read more

Thieves and money hungry are the best words to describe this practice. After 10-15 years of not only having experience working in cosmetic dentistry but also undergoing years of minor work, I went to this dentist in hopes of getting 8 veneers. I am in my 20s and stated I wanted to keep costs low. Her estimate? $60,000!!!!! She sat across from me and handed me a 60k (that could go up to 80k as we go along and find other things) treatment plan and I never heard from her again. No follow up calls from her, no asking if I had questions. Being in the medical field myself, this was unacceptable. EVERY single colleague in the dental field that I showed this too said it was absolutely ludicrous for her to suggest this. To over 5 professionals, they said she was looking only for money. Fast forward to me telling them I'm leaving the practice and they told me "oh before you go, you have a $150 missed appointment fee". TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE AND REGARD FOR CLIENT. I feel lucky to have crossed paths with Dr. Mika. At 54 I had no idea my teeth were in such bad shape with misaligned teeth grinding together and cracks throughout that I did not know I had. My mouth was a mess. I paid to have her do a study of my mouth and it was frightening to look at! I've had a conservative dentistry for 40 + years and after meeting Dr Mika, I feel incredibly informed about the health of my mouth and the work I need to do to literally keep my teeth. I can't continue just repairing things when they are broken. I'm losing the battle. Yes, fixing teeth is expensive but I have shopped similar services and she really is right with the rest of the pack. In some cases her prices are quite a bit lower. Teeth are simply expensive to care for. I recently had 2 crowns placed by Dr. Mika and I have NEVER had crown work done so well. She is a perfectionist, her lab is phenomenal and the quality shows. Her staff is lovely & her assistant wonderful. She has a gift for making temp crowns that feel like permanent ones. I've had plenty of temporary crowns. They bother you, they're shaped weird, they are no fun. The temporary crowns I received there had ZERO irritation and they looked amazing. It really is remarkable. The office is immaculate and I always appreciate a well cleaned, well run medical practice. I am quite sure if I had not met Dr. Mika I would be on the fast track to dentures one not so far off day. I have always been very pleased with the Pearl District Dental dentist, hygienist and their assistants. They are all very kind and make sure that your needs are met during your appointments. However I was very frustrated to find out that when I finally got my bill it stated "Out of Network". My very first question to the gal at the reception desk before starting treatment was "Do you take Regence BCBS?" Her response was "Yes" and I was confident that Pearl District Dental was a great choice because my insurance was going to pay the most at a clinic that was in network. Which was not the case here. I feel like it is very necessary to give the disclaimer of "we take your insurance but we are out of network for you". It is very misleading to just say "yes". I'm sure that the network question is very frequently asked which makes me feel that it should be communicated more clearly. When I called Pearl District Dental to pay my bill I expressed my concerns to Eli who was very apologetic about the miscommunication. He offered to re-bill my insurance company to make sure they paid correctly and also offered to take care of a potion of the bill amount. I canceled the first appointment. Never experience this. It's like they turn down insurance even before I start using. First call, was 30 mins with the operator who seems nice but tried so hard to explain how much the service is gonna cost. Second call, same girl tried to push her job dealing with insurance to me. She doesn't even want to try to check my coverage. My insurance is very normal just like every other employees. I was surprised that only thing she concern is $$$ not how can they provide good service. Third attempt (well I tried too hard or what) I walked over to show her insurance documents. Still she went over and over and over about expenses before spending another 20 minutes just to work on schedule. This office is as clean, and professional as you could only dream of. The receptionist treat you quickly, kindly and thoughtfully offering bottled beverages as you wait. The office takes insurance yet feels like you're in a spa or expensive treatment center. Really great service, exceptional customer care, my teeth got all the things done in a painless and careful way. If you recall being 10 years old and terrified of dentists like I still am, and how wonderful that pediatric dentist was to you at 10 years old, how thoughtful and careful, and how you came out with a bag of new toothpastes/toothbrushes/ stickers. When I told them that I get a (little) nervous sometimes with teeth cleanings, they walked me through each step, were incredibly gentle but I had a thorough teeth cleaning with everything I needed done, and walked out with a new toothbrush and toothpaste, though no stickers... I am thankful for my lovely down the street barista, who had just got braces and as I was new to Portland, she told me of this place. So now time to share on yelp. This seems to me to be a very good dentist. The atmosphere is lovely, and the staff so kind. They always take time to explain procedures and expenses. They've helped me sort out an insurance glitch or two. Dr. Mika seems to aim for a conservative approach--not doing potentially unnecessary work, yet addressing issues as they arise. It's a good balance. I have outstanding dental issues from a terrible dentist years ago, who left me with a serious aversion to dental work. I had to have a full mouth reconstruction for medical reasons, EVERY tooth in my head had to be ground down, set and capped. It was a tough process but now I now have zero pain in my jaw - and my teeth look natural and FANTASTIC. After spending many hours in the chair with Dr. Mika and her staff, I can say with confidence she is the best at what she does. I've done the research and she has cosmetic credentials that no one else in he state can match. In addition, she literally spent days studying my bite so the custom crowns would work perfectly together in concert. I was a client at Pearl District Dental for several years prior to moving out of the Pearl/NW area. Even after moving, I continued to go back periodically until it was no longer possible due to length of commute time. The staff is genuine, talented, professional, and Dr. Mika is a highly educated and competent dentist. I've had many procedures performed over the years and have had no follow on issues with any of the work that's been done. They worked with my insurance company fairly and ethically, and were quick to communicate with me to resolve issues or answer questions related to billing and insurance. They also specialize in cosmetic work and had many options available for those looking to go that route. Beautiful and upscale facility as well. Being new to the area and establishing my medical team here. I had an appointment for a routine cleaning. Upon arrival I checked in waited 30 minutes and was placed in a very cold room. The dentist recommendation was for a deep cleaning, however I requested antibiotics before that process happens. The dentists was very cold & snobbish. I can go on and on about this horrible, unprofessional experience, I have never been treated in such a hateful way. I do feel this office has some major diversity issues as far as patient Interactions. I came here because I stay in the Pearl District & wanted to stay close to home. Greg, I have to disagree with you on this one. I felt like the front desk staff was very nice, but the hygienist I had was rude and inconsiderate. I arrived for my appointment--1 of 2 due to the unfortunate fact that Dr. Mika had burned her hands and wouldn't be able to see me that day--and was taken back to the chair pretty quickly. After that, it all went downhill. The view from the chair was nice, but I did feel like I was in an art gallery and not a dentist's office. I thought this would be a good thing, but it actually left me questioning the Dr's' priorities. It is definitely a place that is catering to the Pearl District crowd--people that I don't usually mesh with. I can't knock them for accurately pandering to their target market, but it just made me uncomfortable. Anyhow, my hygienist walked up and started with X-rays. I told her that I have a small mouth, and that the xray film things usually hurt me pretty bad. She said "ok" and preceded to shove them in my mouth with wreckless abandon. She took her sweet time taking the pictures, and, despite the tears running down my face, didn't make any mention of apology for the pain. Next, it was time for the gum check. She used a pokey thing to take measurements of my gums, and, while in the process, jabbed my gums around my molars so much that they began to bleed. I told her it hurt, and she said coldly, "I bet it does" (no exaggeration!). She explained that I had some gingivitis back there and that I need to floss. I was baffled. I am used to being in pain at the dentist, but the hygienist and doctor are always apologetic and try to make me as comfortable as possible. I would also like to assert my lack of wussiness. I have a pretty high tolerance to pain, and I am not afraid of the dentist. Don't get me wrong, it's not my idea of a good time, but I usually have no problems. The hygienist finished cleaning my teeth, walked away (no goodbye, status update, nothing) and sent me to make another appointment with the front desk. Needless to say, I bailed on Pearl District and tried out Green Apple--talk about night and day. I am happy with my new dentist and will never go back to Pearl. Oh, and one more thing, the hygeniest kept telling me that my front teeth were crooked and that I would be a good candidate for Invisilign. Total sales pitch. Boooo. read more

I rarely give low Yelp reviews because I know how hard it can be on a business, especially during Covid. But I am writing this one because I also know that future customers rely on reviews when selecting a provider. I had a really bad experience last week at this dentist. My car was broken into on the morning for the appointment and I called to reschedule. They asked me if I'd still come and they said "we'll pay for your Uber." They told me the dentist had set aside an hour and half for me. I was going for a cosmetic dentist consultation for one baby tooth. From the time I got to the office until the time I left I was confused and also, honestly, felt like they weren't being super up-front or clear with me. The dentist came in, looked at the baby tooth and then said "After your X-rays I am going to come back in and build you a model right in your mouth of what the new tooth will look like" The hygentist tried to take X-rays of the tooth but after 6 attempts she wasn't able and she got someone else to help her get the view. I felt a little sketchy with that many useless x-rays for one tooth because I try to be careful with how often I am x-rayed. She said "don't worry, we won't charge you for these". The dentist came back in and looked at the X-ray and said that there was a "simple path" Then he started talking to me all about full mouth invisline that I'd have to wear for a year. He put his hands on my jaw and asked me to open and close. He said the sound of "popping" indicated misalignment. He asked me if I have pain (I don't, ever). He said "It is the equivalent of walking with just one high heel on" and said that it was amazing I don't have pain. I asked for options that don't include Invisiline. He told me about partial Invisilne (6 months) and then implant or bridge. I kept asking "is there anything you can do just to cosmetically address this one tooth?" and he said no. He told me that if I want an implant I'd have to see a specialist who he could refer me to. He never built the "model tooth" like he told me he was going to and he didn't mention it again. I was then brought into a business office and this business manager talked to me about my options but he referred to me "two teeth" a number of times (it's just one tooth) and then was talking about a study he read about bridges vs. implants which he then pulled up pictures of on Wikipedia/google images. He told me that the cost would be close to $20K depending on the option I picked. He told me that they work with a tooth color matching company that is the "best in the world" and he showed me a book of their color matching work. He said a tooth from that company would cost extra. I feel like a tooth match should not be an "extra". Anyway, it may be true that one procedure for one tooth really does cost $20K and that it may not be possible without Invisiline. I am absolutely getting a second opinion elsewhere. But mainly the whole experience was just not informative. I left with three murky "options", no referral to the implant guy, no paper work about future costs or timeline for each options. They whole thing was just disappointing because the consultation itself was a $300 charge. I said I didn't want to pay the whole charge upfront because my insurance had said they'd pay for a portion. I was charged half the rate but I am sure they will bill me for the rest. Anyway, if possible, I'd look elsewhere for cosmetic dentistry. read more

Bottom line: There are significantly better (more professional, trustworthy, friendly, etc) dentists in the Pearl that you might consider giving your business to. I went to establish care at Pearl District Dental and my insurance paid for the exam. After the exam, I declined all care there and paid out of pocket to get a second exam and establish care at another dentist. Explanation: I am a healthcare provider (MD) so have some appreciation for the quality of medical care. I am not convinced that this is quality medical care. I enjoyed my interaction with the front desk personnel however, beyond that I had a negative experience. I felt somewhat captive, being told/instructed/lectured to on how my care was going to go. It was just a bad feeling. The hygienist was ok - professional enough. The dentist (Mika) conducted half of her conversation with me following the exam while I was still fully reclined and with the chair in the lowest position and with her standing - my head was literally at the level of her knees - not sure if i'm communicating myself well but imagine trying to conduct a conversation about your healthcare in that situation. The exam had concluded and she neglected to sit me up for about 2 minutes. Seemed like she was quite deliberately trying to show me who was in charge (yes, I had identified myself as a doctor, so maybe that played into it). Their reviews on google and facebook seem pretty good but if you go digging around there a few concerning things, most notably, one reviewer claims that he was offered money to remove a negative review. Good for them for leaving that review in place! Other dentists with great reviews in the Pearl have significantly longer wait times for appointments. I'm guessing that this is for good reason - they have very loyal clients and for good reason. I found my experiences at Pearl District Dental and the place I ended up going to be night and day with respect to quality. Shop around a little and if you find a place that is difficult to get an appointment at then you've probably found a quality dentist! read more

I would not recommend this office. First, Dr. Mika recommended treatment to correct my bite explaining it was necessary to protect future chipping to the veneers I went to see her for. Made sense at the time. Then she recommended a custom nightguard. Since these charges were on top of already expensive fees for veneers, I decided to consult other dentists. I found out that 1. The bite correction treatment was overkill, 2. My inexpensive nightguard was fine and not one dentist charged me for a consult like Pearl dental which was 100 dollars. Finally, even though Dr. Mika's office confirmed that they were "in network" for my insurance, the week after my consult they sent a letter saying they no longer were a participating dentist but would still provide the same coverage (it isn't the same.. It means more out of pocket for patients). Bottom line; the office is beautiful (but I don't want to subsidize it), the staff is friendly, but treatment recommended is over the top,their fees across the board are very expensive and they are not forthcoming with info (they knew at the time of my visit they were about to choose not to be a participating dentist, but confirmed the opposite. I would not recommend this office unless money and being less than straightforward do not matter. read more

I did not feel this is a trustworthy place. I felt pushed by the entire staff to get dental work that I did not ask for or intend on receiving, for example nightgaurd, deep cleaning, etc.. Personally, I would never go back to a dental office where the dentist, hygienist, AND receptionist are giving dental advice to the patient, and persuading the client to get the service. Luckily I had had a dental exam one month prior to this place, and that dentist had not mentioned even half of the dental issues that this dentist brought up. Beware of this place as it is more of a sales office rather than a dental office. read more

I was had a cleaning/check-up and was diagnosed with 14 cavities from another dentist so I got a second opinion from Dr. Mika. I was diagnosed with zero cavities here and told I needed another cleaning, only a month later, for a total bill of $724! Went back to my original dentist and reviewed the x-rays and photos and could see 12 cavities myself. I feel completely ripped off my Dr. Mika. Her office agreed to reduce the bill by only $118. I arrived for my scheduled, new patient cleaning only to be told once I was seated in the dental chair that I could not have a cleaning. They would be happy to take X-rays and give me an exam, but if I wanted a cleaning I would have to make a second apt.
