I LOVE Pearl's Bake Shoppe. I've been eyeing their cupcakes for a while before finally deciding to try them, but I'm so glad that I did! I've come back more than a few times to try different cupcakes from this bakery, and it has not disappointed! They always have a line when I stop by of people picking up bakery orders or stopping by to grab sweet treats. They have all kinds of pastries and bakery items: cakes, cake pops, cupcakes, cookies, brownies, pies, macarons, pop tarts and even packaged drinks. I've gotten a few different cupcakes from them. My favorites have been the peaches and cream, top hat cupcake, pistachio raspberry and strawberry vanilla. Their tiramisu cupcake, margarita cupcake and the key lime cupcakes all actually tasted so much like the namesakes! Their cupcakes are mostly perfectly balanced sweetness: I haven't had anything that was too sweet. Their cakes look so beautifully decorated, but I haven't tried any. They look so good though! I spoke to two other cake shops before deciding to use Pearl's Bake Shoppe. I worked with Emily Pilk on the design and she was great! I wanted a cake for my daughter's bridal shower and she is vegan. I know vegan cakes can be hit or miss and Pearl's knocked it out of the park with this one! It tasted incredible and no one would have known it was a vegan cake if I hadn't told them. I got so many compliments over how it tasted and how beautiful it was. I don't think I've ever seen a cake as pretty as this one! I did a lemon cake with lemon buttercream and raspberry filling. I ordered a cake for my son's baptism. Simple. Got there and they quickly gave me cake and I quickly looked at it but was very distracted. I got home a hour away and got to finally look more at it about a hour later. GOD Bless was misspelled. God was not capitalized and bless was blees. Then called and I was told to drive back the next day a hour away again. Got there and figured someone would apologize or even the manager would come say something. No nothing of that sort. No apology... No asking if they could compensate for my time, gas, and money since I just spent almost $40 on a 6 in cake. I was sitting at a table and someone who was more than likely the manager, owner, or someone that wasn't a baker did come start pulling things out of a drawer and start throwing it all over the table I was sitting at. Also the decorator did act annoyed and gave me a look across the room though when she brought out the cake. Honestly the coming back wouldn't of made me so annoyed if they handled it correctly. My husband celebrated his birthday yesterday which of course calls for sweet treats. I picked pearls because 1) I've had their cupcakes before and I knew they were delicious & 2) they have vegan options and we have vegan friends. I didn't order ahead because I wanted to have a mix and match dozen and that was easier to do in person. This could be a gamble at some places but they had plenty of options and plenty of each (I went in the morning just a tip if you're doing the same). They had 4 vegan options and two of those were gluten free, I believe they also had 2 gluten free regular as well. The picture I posted was only one side of the display case so there were more flavors than just those ones shown. The guy helping me was very nice, the store was very cute and had many other options besides just the cupcakes. I really wanted a strawberry cake for my birthday and Pearl's was one of the few bakeries I could find that had it on the menu and that allowed shorter notice orders. Their website and online ordering is super easy to use. There was a link to place an order for today/tomorrow and one for orders 48+ hours away. I mentioned a nut allergy in the notes and they followed up within the day reassuring no nut products would be used but cross contamination could be a risk. I appreciated the honesty. Pickup was seamless. They have decorations and candles for purchase at the store. I got some small gold number candles that I had trouble finding elsewhere for a decent price. The cake was as described on the site. Very cute, though the lettering could be neater. The cake was denser than I expected. The frosting/icing hardened in the fridge. I probably should have taken it out earlier but I found it was more enjoyable when I microwaved it a little. read more

I have always loved Pearl's but bought a cake last week and was told it was made the day before. Again I was told this when they responded to my complaint. The cake was so dry I took the whole thing and put it in the trash. I think most places would have offered a replacement. Pearls is such a pretty bakery!! They also have a side to sit & eat! Always clean & well kept! The service is always good! The workers are always kind, at least every time I'm there!! Wasn't able to place a birthday cupcake order because they were booked up with Christmas orders, which is fair, but was also told they were closed on Christmas Eve by the person who we were speaking to immediately and rudely, so no coming in to even pick up a few cupcakes. I had a different place in mind, but I figured I should try it just to be sure. Wow, that cake knocked my socks off. #2 the cake is so delicious! It's heavy and dense while still be moist. The buttercream frosting is different than anything I've had before. Love it! I ended up getting 9 cakes (8 different flavors) instead of one big wedding cake because I am obsessed with trying everything and thought it would be fun for the guests. I knew my GRAND vision would not be scene by a normal grocery store as of walmart or Publix and so I went and started a hunt on Google for exclusive bake Shoppes. I ran across a Pearl's and after looking at their pictures and other creations I felt secure they would be able to create my ideas and make a beautiful cake and they DID NOT disappoint! All I had to do is send them some pictures and give some detailed instructions and they hit the nail on the head! From the glossy wet gold drop look to the matching cupcakes with 24kt edible gold flakes!! Too top it of a choose their most loved champagne infused yellow cake and it was AMAZING, MOIST and just enough hint of champagne taste and sweetness!! I have been going to Pearl's since they opened, and have long argued that they are the best cupcake shop in town. Unfortunately, I don't think I can say that anymore. It's not that other places have gotten better, it's that Pearl's has gotten worse. While I appreciate that the classics are always available, they seem to have considerably cut back on the number of non-classic options available on any given day. That would be okay if the quality were still top-notch, but it simply isn't. I feel like the decline coincided with their expansion beyond cupcakes, which of course used to be their raison d'être. Now, the actual cake part of the cupcakes is often bland, and the frosting seems to favor quantity over quality. I've really tried to stick with Pearl's because of my many fond memories of birthday cupcakes, but those days are gone. Today, for the first time, I actually decided that the cupcake in front of me was so mediocre that *it was not worth eating*! Even late in the day, the bakery is bustling with activity, as it's a popular place for good reason. This is my first year of holidays being gluten free. I am gluten intolerant and it's been hard to incorporate that with family gatherings. For Christmas we decided to do a Christmas brunch at my sister's house. I found Pearl's on Instagram and decided to order some items from them. I got a dozen GF sweet potato biscuits with butter and a variety of regular cupcakes and 2 GF. I was sad they didn't have any candied sweet potato cupcakes left during pickup. We absolutely love cupcakes! So with that being said we drive around trying every cupcake possible. It's been a minute since we had a Pearl's Cupcake, so we decided to give it another try. My cupcake just like every other time was good. I wouldn't call this the best cupcake place in Richmond, but for us it does at least make our top three! The attention to details and presentation is not consistent. Sometimes the cupcakes are beautiful and sometimes they look lazy like the one I had today. I went to checkout this shop after meeting one of the owners, who is a realtor in the area! I was SOOOO impressed. This place is so cute and the array of flavors is so elevated. I got the Pigskin cupcake and I was floored by how decadent it was. It is a chocolate stout cake (I don't know what stout it, but I liked it) topped with strips of candied bacon. I'm not one for bacon and chocolate, but I AM NOW! I've also had their ham biscuits and they are too die for. I had to follow up with them SO many times. There was so much back and forth and eventually one of the owners took over who was just as unorganized. I'm always grateful that they put mine separate from my kids regular gluten cupcakes. No hassle, super sweet of them.
