I requested a strawberry cake from the Mixong Bowl for my birthday. All I could think of were the delicious upside down strawberry cupcakes. My mom placed the order and was I disappointed. We cut into the cake and the actual cake part is orange. And the icing between the layers is plain white (seems to me same strawberry icing would make and look better). The entire cake had a funny aftertaste. I'm not sure fresh strawberries were used, maybe maybe not. Why on earth would the use an orange heavily textured cake? Why would the employee take the order and not explain that the strawberry cake had an orange colored cake? Btw, the cake itself had absolutely no flavor or taste. I was so disappointed to know this cake was not a traditional or version of traditional cake. People should be made aware of the Mixing Bowls version. It's ugly and the cake was half ass made. Just a great freakin bakery, and it's exactly what a great bakery should be. Not unnecessarily flashy, and absolutely excellent execution all around. The interior looks and feels like a true working bakery. Delightful aromas, flour dusted surfaces and aprons, and piles upon piles of top level baked goods. Staff is legitimately excited to be producing such good products. I've always been seduced by the cupcakes. My new husband and I wanted to do a dessert table for our wedding and we LOVED all the desserts from The Mixing Bowl! We got just a 1 tier 2 layer cake and it arrived exactly as we asked, sleek and minimal and the perfect stage for our cake topper. We got mini cupcakes which were the perfect size for a bite and they were moist and so flavorful. The eclairs were a crowd favorite with the banana cream! They are soooo good! Eclairs are my favorite dessert and these were filled nicely and still so yummy days later. The cookies were crunchy and a great size. We got a lot of comments about how good all the desserts tasted. I have driven by this bakery and every time I try to go by, they are closed because it is too late in the day. I've been wanting to go to the Mixing Bowl as it has been said to be a West End favorite. I'm really not sure why. Today I finally made it by as I wanted to pick up some treats to take an office that I call on and let me tell you how I was disappointed. Their display case was sparse at best with a very small variety of items in the case. All they had were various bars, upside down cupcakes, tiny sticky buns, a few cannolis, and some cake balls. I wanted to leave and should have, but I didn't want to be rude. I got a variety of bars and then the gentleman helping me said let's add in some sticky buns. Those sticky pecan buns are so tiny. I'm very embarrassed to take this into an office as in just two bites the pecan bun will be gone. Now I feel like I need to go by another bakery to make up for the tiny pecan sticky buns. I will say that the man helping me was very polite and kind which I certainly appreciate I normally use Shindigz, Pearls, or Westhampton Bakery and they always have extremely full display cases and always have a very large variety of items from which to choose. We found the mixing bowl on the vendor list for our wedding venue, Fairview farm. After reading all of their great reviews, we decided they would be perfect! We went with a spice cake for our winter wedding. It was so delicious and looked amazing decorated with rosemary and cranberries! We had such a good time doing the tasting. You pick multiple cakes and frostings and they pack you a little cupcake box to try so you can mix different cakes and frostings! I wanted to buy something special to take to my veterinarian's office. Years ago when the MB was on Broad St. It was the place to go. Have they changed their product or has my taste changed? I got 13 cupcakes. One for me and 12 to take to my vet's office. I ate mine in the car and immediately was sorry I paid $32 for 13 cupcakes. They are beyond sweet. They are disgustingly sweet. There is about 3x as much frosting as needed. I went home and tried another cupcake. Same problem. Frosting is way too dense (I can't stress the word "dense" enough) and, again the frosting overwhelmed the cupcake. The cake part was very good ... but overall I wasted my money. They went into the trash. I chose another gift for my vet's office. read more

I recently had my wedding earlier this month, September 2022, and decided to give The Mixing bowl bakery a chance, I booked my cake a few months in advance and paid for it all. I got a three tier cake that fed 170, I was so excited to taste my wedding cake and when I did the icing was wrong and the cake was dry, I was disappointed and not a lot of people ate it either. (Fortunately the hotel we had it had an amazing torte they passed around) Another thing every time I talked to the owner about it she was completely rude to me and that should have been a sign but I decided to give the benefit of the doubt. I guess it is a hit or miss with this place, I am still disappointed. Oh, and she deleted my google review post, that should tell you something. read more

Delicious but now years later and 3 trys later just is not going to do it. Maybe a wedding cake something pretty but the taste I am sure will be pretty much what I tasted,,,NOT GOOD. Maybe the 2 stars is for the coconut and lemon icing which I thought covered cupcakes but it was covering a hard pound cake probably cut into a round out of a sheet cake...and both were way different heights. I called on a Tuesday to see if they were able to make a Mario cake for my son's 6th birthday party that would be ready to be picked up on Friday by 2PM. They said all they would need is a picture of what we were thinking and they would give us an estimate. Within 15 mins that said they could do it in the timeframe given and would be what we asked for. I picked the cake up on Friday and was completely amazed at the attention to detail and how they exceeded my expectations. However, I wondered how it would taste. At the birthday party everyone commented on the beauty of the cake AND how delicious it was. The Mixing Bowl was far cheaper and higher quality than other places we researched. Sadly, it was dry and the frosting was hard on top...seemed stale. On our last day at the corporate office, my co workers and I wanted to show our gratitude by plying them with a mess of pastries. We asked our hotel concierge, the folks at the local coffee shop and even a 7-11 clerk where we could find a local pastry or donut shop. The best anyone could come up with was Krispy Kreem donuts (gag) apparently, handmade breakfast pastries are not a popular food item in Richmond. Searching the streets, we saw the Mixing Bowl sign and turned in to the parking lot of a little cottage set far off the street, that you would never know the business existed. We found Nirvana! Tracy (I'm pretty sure that's her name) a graduate of the California Culinary Academy in San Francisco, had moved back to Virginia and taken over the Mixing Bowl baking business in the last six months. What a surprise that 3 San Franciscans pop up at her bakery looking for pastries! Tracy was the sweetest, nicest person and piled 2 boxes with pastries, her signature upside down cupcakes, and sticky buns. Needless to say, we looked like heroes when we walked through the door with boxes with the Mixing Bowl business cards on them. Their specialty is wedding cakes (there are kudos and reference letters on the wall where you enter her shop) but Tracy also makes sticky buns, upside down cupcakes, fresh breads and rolls. My best friend and I DID walk in 10 min before closing, so perhaps the hairy eyeball and dry, unwelcoming, "may I help you?" was warranted. You would think that a bakery would have baked goods on hand, no? There were a few small bags of cookies (that, YESS! were actually a reasonable size, not huge dinner plates), some day old challah breads and "pumpkin spice coffee cake" sections two sad looking pies and a few assorted other little things, some of which must have been the "upside down cupcakes" that another reviewer mentioned. i was unaware that a cupcake, when turned upside down, would look so unappealing. We learned that if you want something other than their rather anemic selection you must order it ahead of time. How was I supposed to know that? Do they have a website I can look at for a menu? No. You'd just have to call or go by and have them explain to you all the choices or possibilities. Getting a cake would involve either a long (what I expect to be confusing and less than cordial, based on our greeter) phone call and one trip or two trips out to Three Chopt to complete the transaction. That sounds like slightly less of a pain in the butt than making the cake myself, but I like to cook so your mileage may vary. We ended up purchasing some of the day old goods and a bag of chocolate chip cookies. The breads were okay, the chocolate chip cookies were really good and the price was exactly right for what we got. Unfortunately, that's really just not enough to get me to travel all the way out here from Manchester on a regular basis. Important note! The picture as a thumbnail here is not helpful. They're in the Westbury Pharmacy shopping center on the corner of Three Chopt and Eastwood, right where you'd turn to go to the mall on Parham. The awning above their door has the name of another business, a market of some sort. We were navigating off the address and picture on yelp. I drove right by it once and would have missed it a second time and given up were it not for the keen eyes of my best friend who said, "Oh! There's a little sign in the window, 'The Mixing Bowl'! I purchased a Red Velvet cake for my boyfriend's birthday last year and it was awesome. Just a 6" cake, but it was large enough to probably feed 6, 4 if they wanted big pieces. It was beautifully decorated with delicious cream cheese frosting, the cake itself was moist and yummy...high praise indeed from someone who isn't crazy about red velvet cake! This review is long overdue. Mixing Bowl is by far the best place for custom cakes in the Richmond metro area. The cakes are always delightfully moist with excellent butter cream frosting. The staff are talented and accommodating. I have used other bakeries from time to time and been sorely disappointed in the final product, too dry, crisco based frosting, bad attitude from staff. Mixing Bowl goes above and beyond to listen to their customers. I would recommend anyone looking for a custom cake to call Mixing Bowl! read more
