I can't believe I've never been to this place and I've lived here for so many years! This place is incredible! Classic, southern, grandma foot food!! Loved every moment of being in there as we were greeted with so much hospitality. The place looks like an old school dining spot - can't even describe it but it's timeless. The complimentary biscuit... MY OH MY! Just go!

I've been here a couple of times with my family, and we love it! We've gone for breakfast and lunch. They do an all you can eat buffet, but they also have a menu you can order from. Everything is made to-order, which I love! Always ensures your food is HOT. The staff are so nice and kind. Definitely feels like a friend or a family there. It's very familiar and homey. Overall, an amazing place I'll come back to over and over again!

I've been here a few times before. Sometimes I go for breakfast, which I usually enjoy. I had their dinner options at this visit. The star of the show for me was their Jerk Turkey, which is something I've never had. It was tender and packed with flavor. The Peach Cobbler was okay. I wish the crust was a cooked a little longer.

Long overdue stop to this Brownsville staple a few weeks back. Really good food, but I never do buffets so I can't comment on that option. From the menu we had the New Orleans breakfast and Cheesy Shrimp & Grits. The photos on the website accurately depicted these dishes which were outstanding. I would not order the catfish nuggets, but am assured that the smothered chops are outstanding. The service was okay--good but not great. (My experience echoed my foodie buddy Rozalynn B. who said: "We went on a busy Saturday afternoon at about 330 & there was a 40 minute wait. Well we saw plenty open tables so we couldn't understand why the wait, but ok WHATEVER." Exactly what I experienced--that is poor service!) The Venu itself is in need of modernization but is inviting and comfortable.

We popped in for lunch and learned they have two free parking lots (across the street and in the now closed motel lot), score! Service was warm and kind and they brought biscuits and some whipped butter out right away which we very much enjoyed. The restaurant is large with ample seating and photos of famous people who have visited previously. There's a buffet available, but we weren't starving so we ordered sandwiches and it was a ton of food! We saw many people enjoying the buffet and it looked like a great value so maybe next time. The world famous chicken salad and ham were excellent! So so very tasty. They were also kind enough to swap one of the sides for me. We weren't asked about desserts which was for the best, but we saw some in the front area to go case and they looked great. We will definitely be back!

Meh. I've honestly never understood why Pearl's Place has garnered such a positive reputation. The food is mediocre at best. I hadn't been to Pearl's in years, but I decided to order takeout one evening and thought I'd give them another shot. I ordered the meatloaf dinner, which came with greens and mashed potatoes and gravy. The food was ready when I arrived, so I only had to wait a couple of minutes for it. The food was okay. It wasn't particularly tasty or memorable. The meatloaf and mashed potatoes 'n gravy didn't have much flavor. The greens were decent, but I've had better. The portion size was generous, though, and it was packaged well. The staff also got the order correct, which was awesome because it sucks when a takeout order isn't right. The meatloaf and two sides cost about $25.

First time here. Was pretty busy for a Saturday afternoon, but we were able to be seated right away. The food and drinks were good as we ordered off the menu, but next time, we will try the buffet. Service was okay but seeing how busy they were and having to wait a while before even getting water or bread, they might want to have a few more servers. Would recommend it, and I would go back.

Hidden gym in the south side of Chicago. My fiance recommended this place and we stopped in. For a Saturday night, it wasn't that busy. You can park on the street but there is a lot across from the restaurant. Right away, we were seated by the hostess who also was a server. They take your order for drinks, otherwise they bring out cornbread and water to start. There's no booths, only tables available for seating and they have high chairs. You can order from the menu or go straight to the all you can eat buffet. I have never been to a place like this before. You can literally eat as much food as you want! It was so good. You can "order" a box to go which is basically going up to the buffet, filling your plate and request a container. I believe that is an extra $6 or so. There are drinks and desert items by the entrance for purchase. The chocolate cake was ok, but I'm not a chocolate person. I don't know the area well but my fiance does. Be careful of your surroundings but we felt pretty safe once we got inside the restaurant. For 2 people, was around $77.

Just south of south loop area on Pershing and Michigan. The food is prepared with that southern home flavor! I make it a habit to get the buffet, so I can get a little taste of everything The place is well lit and clean. The service was great and very friendly. I will definitely be going back there again.

Ask the Community - Pearl's Place

Do you need reservations for a large party? Is it just buffets or can you order off the menu?

Reservations are recommended, but not required. For the best dining experience, large parties are encouraged to enjoy our buffet, instead of individual menu orders.

    Is there a parking lot?

Yes and no. Pearl's doesn't have its own official lot, so many customers park on the street around the restaurant. However, it is in the same space as a Motel, and there is a lot in the motel where customers also park.

Do they have a kids menu?

    Yes, they do.

I had a 8:30pm reservation but they keep seating up until 9 when they closed; with a 15 min buffer. Everything had to be order all at once, including drinks and food. The dark interior is honestly very aesthetic and adds a moody vibe. I had the fish and grits, which was a HUGE portion, and the cornbread was insanely good as well. I was between that and the biscuits. I recommend the uncle honey as a drink because the flavors mix together so well! Also get the Millie's pudding (banana pudding) for dessert! Prices are also so reasonable for the portion size as well. Highly recommend going if you can get a reservation; which are sometimes hard to do. Will be back!

We were seated at a high table with extremely low chairs, and when we asked if anyone had ever complained about them, our waitress gave us a "death stare" that immediately made us feel like she was annoyed. Things only got worse from there. We waited over an hour just for an order of fried green tomatoes and then another 45 minutes with still no entrées. Meanwhile, tables that arrived after us were being served their food. They even served my daughter a bottled sodas with no ice. When we finally spoke to the manager, there was no empathy, and no effort to make things right. Instead, we were told the other guests had arrived before us, which wasn't true. To make matters worse, we were still charged for our drinks and appetizer after sitting there for nearly two hours and never receiving our meals. As someone who works in complaint management, I am truly appalled by the lack of accountability and ownership that was shown. Mistakes happen, but how you respond to those mistakes speaks volumes about your organization. A "sincere"apology, empathy, and a willingness to make things right can go a long way. Unfortunately, none of that was demonstrated, which made an already disappointing experience even worse. It's not always the issue itself that leaves a lasting impression, it's how people choose to handle it. As someone who believes in supporting Black-owned businesses, this experience was extremely disappointing. I can't say I would recommend this establishment based on the lack of service, accountability, and basic customer care we experienced.

There were 12 adults and we spent about $300, which wasn't bad considering your meal comes with two sides and cornbread. I ordered the baked turkey wings with collard greens and white rice. It was so delicious! I couldn't eat it all because the portions were huge! A lot of my trainees needed to-go bags because it was so much food in those containers. The peach cobbler is amazing too! Menu is written on a whiteboard which allows them to just erase the item when it sells out. But, a digital display would elevate the ambiance and lend a more polished feel. Details matter, especially when you're asking customers to pay premium prices. Customer service was really rocky to start, but the gentleman with the locs saw my face, heard my comment, and quickly adjusted. Much appreciated. Keep that same energy for ALL your customers. What we ate: Delicious: peach cobbler (fantastic!) Decent: short ribs, Mac n cheese, green beans, cornbread muffin Don't bother: collards, salmon One major gripe: at this price point, being served in takeout containers with plastic cutlery cheapens the experience. Invest in real plates and silverware -- your margins can surely support the upgrade. If you are going to automatically grat a dine-in check, then your patrons should sit at clean tables and be greeted by a smiling face. Neither of these were part of my experience. But I also didn't see the gratuity on my check. So, there's that. Clean tables and a warm greeting are basic expectations -- not bonuses -- especially if an automatic gratuity is being added to dine-in checks. (Although curiously, I didn't see this reflected on mine.) As for the $1 price tag on a small 16 oz bottle of water -- yes, you're making a solid markup. But why not reinvest a few cents more in a larger, sport-cap option? Small touches like that make a big difference in perceived value. The space was nearly empty during my visit, but I can imagine it picks up post-Sunday service. Still, the lack of energy in the room matched the food: fine, but not worth rushing back for. Nothing Would I return? Maybe. But I'm not in a hurry.
