Most bbq places serve ribs that go from the smoker, to the warming oven/heating light, to the plate but this place has the fresh from the smoker flavor that is rare. Went for a Friday evening take out/drive thru meal, wish we had not. Peebles was very good bar-b-q in the past but this evening the food lacked taste and quality. The ribs were very tough and chewy, not a slow cooked rib and lacked in flavor & quality. The chopped pork was a little better but had many hard pieces like knuckle parts, a sign of a cook and carver who really were not paying attention to quality and the end product. The slaw was a good texture but lacked in flavor. The potato salad was like flavored mash potatoes. The baked beans were clearly not baked beans just open the can beans with little flavor. Very disappointing since they were crowded and I am sure others got the same low quality food that we got. So if you are looking for some good quality bar-b-q you may want to look elsewhere. read more

First, they have somehow changed the recipe for the bbq sauce... we had been away awhile so that we don't know exactly when that occurred but we all agree something has changed and not for the better. But, when we went a few days ago we thought to give it another try (up til then we did get food a few times by curb side service). We thought, though like so many restaurants they would have something in place for the covid 19. When we arrived...and went in..we were surprised to find there is NOTHING in place for the virus. No social distancing at all. Tables are still long and crowded together they same as it has been. We found a table over by the windows so felt it might be a bit safer but trust me no other seating in the place would i consider safe. The server had a mask on and she did come by a few times to see if we needed anything.But when we finally did need something she was about 10 feet over talking to a gentleman who was seated. She turned around twice, looking directly at us, and my husband and I both raised hands to indicate we needed something. Twice she looked at us... and turned her back to us a resumed talking to the seated gentleman. Only when the gentleman saw we were trying to get her attention, and he told her we needed something did she turn back around and come over. Food? well, the sauce was sub par....we got the ribs and wow were we disappointed. It used to be the ribs had meat on those bones...really good meat... these were so scimpy ...very little meat.. there is no way would order them again. Certainly not worth the money. We decided our one time out during this pandemic was so not worth it. Food ? bah..... service bah times two. Risk of virus a very serious situation. Sad... my husband grew up in Auburndale and his family always patronized this place. We were not a bit impressed at all by this BBQ.... I was disappointed in what they called sliced beef? I was surprised at the low quality BBQ that we found twice after hearing rave reviews about it being the best in Polk county. We tried it carry out and found the ribs dry and the BBQ sauce not to my taste--not going to hold that against them I just don't like the vinegar BBQ as much. But the best BBQ in Polk county should not be dry. Well we decided to give them the benefit of the doubt and we came in to eat. Sadly, the chicken was so dry we sent it back. And the ribs... I enjoy this place very much. They are a family business that keeps things simple in an age of flashy. I have been going here for many years and feel the product is fair for the price. I was expecting this place to be a hidden gem. Even though it is a distance from my house I was hoping I won't mind the drive since it is pretty much in the middle of no where. Unfortunately, I don't think we will be returning. The bbq was good just not excellent. However, to be fair I am very particular about bbq. We each had ribs which were thick and juicy. It just didn't have much flavor without bbq sauce. Between the three of us we had mac & cheese, collards, coleslaw, potato salad and baked beans. The coleslaw was exceptional good. The other sides were good and flavorful. The baked beans had too much sauce and was too sweet for me and I love sweets. We also had banana pudding that was excellent. Although, the bbq was good the main reason we won't be going back is because even though it adds to the charm of being an old place it had no air conditioning. We were sitting next to the window by the road. They have to keep all the windows open because it gets so hot inside. There are screens on the windows but, the dirt from the road and cars gets all over the tables and everything on the table including the bottles of sauce. I am surprised that the health department allows this. When they give you a drink it doesn't have a lid on it so the dirt from the outside can get into your drink and food. Today even though it wasn't exceptionally hot in the 80's it was cooler outside than inside. As much as I try to support the locals they do make it hard sometimes. Again, their food was good. I have been going to Peebles for about five years and this is my first review. Fantastic! Any BBQ joint that lets you sit beside the pit, has got to be good. The smokey scent, cardboard menu on the wall and the phone ringing off the hook, my kind of place. Bring cash, my buddy and I made that mistake. We had a side of ribs for dinner and we forgot that you cannot pay with a creditcard. We had enough cash between the two of us to pay our bill but not be able to leave a tip. So, we went down the block and got some cash from an ATM machine. We came back inside and gave our server a tip, she was really surprised. Love this place. Food is great and so is service. It is our go to place when we get off of I-4. Have never been disappointed in either the food or the service. The ribs and chicken are our favorite and the sides are great. Portions are just large enough and they have a great variety, mac and cheese are one of our favorites. Unfortunately, we had a bad experience at Peebles. After rave reviews from our neighbors we finally made the trip and found very slow and poor service and barbecue that was so tough I had to leave it in my basket because I couldn't bite through it. Sides were stale tasting. The baked beans were actually dry and crusty. I don't know if we came at an especially bad time (1:30 p.m. on a weekday,) but a bad time makes for a bad review. I drove by this place the other day, and I knew I had to try it. It looked like my kind of BBQ restaurant. At 2pm on a Saturday the parking lot was packed! When I went inside, the smell of wood smoke hit my nose and I knew I was home. The inside was packed with people eating, even though there was no AC and it was 90 degrees. So I got in line to order some eats for dinner and got chopped pork, baked beans, coleslaw, and potato salad. To be honest I'm not really fond of the slaw or potato salad, but those are really personal preference anyway. No one makes it like mom, right? But the pork BBQ was on point! It didn't need any BBQ sauce, but the house sauce they included was very good too. I will be back to this joint. When I was waiting in line, I saw a guy throwing racks of ribs on a grill. I wanted to like the BBQ, as I've heard so many good things from friends. However, it simply isn't good. Had the chopped pork and ribs. As for the chopped pork, it is cooked too hot and fast resulting in firm, dry, rubbery texture. Further, it is oversmoked, though admittedly I'm not a fan of oak smoke on pork for that reason. I should also say that I much prefer pulled to chopped pork, but usually precisely for this reason...chopped pork is one way to hide poor texture. But, chopping couldn't even hide that in this case. The ribs were better, but not very good either. Take the membranes off and you'd have a much better rib. The texture of the ribs was much better than the chopped pork. Decent bite-through without pulling the whole rib off the bone. That membrane though... The beans were very good, and the slaw was excellent. I appreciate the history and tradition of this place, and the fact that it has such a loyal following. And I know I havent tried everything. With that said though, it is one of the two least favorite pulled/chopped pork I've ever had. Keep on keepin on though. Always pulling for successful small businesses, this one included. read more

Best BBQ place I've had in awhile... its made for a quick stop if your really hungry for some good bbq. Only open 3 days a week, and parking is tough sometimes and also there can be long lines. Loved the pork sandwich, comes with 3 sides, potato salad (incredible), coleslaw, and baked beans. Pork was great and you get to put on your own bbq sauce to the amount you want. It is a small shack but well worth the trip! Tried it on my vacation while in lakeland.
