I've heard endless raves about this joint since I moved to Lakeland almost three decades ago, yesterday I finally made it there. Horrible. Simply horrible is the best review I can muster. The service was abhorrent and, worse, lazy. When I walked in, the tables were still shiny with the residue of a well-passed-its-prime dishrag, there were flies buzzing about, and the staff were clustered together gossiping. I waited for a minute and, when no one attempted to help seat me, I found my own table. This was the third table I sat at after the other two were rather unsavory. My server finally came over and asked what I wanted to drink, and when I asked for a large Coke Zero, she threw me a "yeah whateva" glare. My drink came back -lidless at that - with no straw (which I found on my own in my utensil kit). Then, I ordered. I ordered the sample platter, and waited... While waiting I couldn't help but overhear the female servers pontificating on the sizes of the tires of a guy's dually F-150 and, apparently, the packed meat in his wranglers? Interesting to hear before I was going to eat, yeah? Once my food did arrive, it was completely dried and needed an abundant amount of the super vinegared house bbq sauce. The only redeeming aspect of my platter was the smoked sausage link. Damned tasty, but the rest was texturally and visually far past its most delicious cooking point. The two ribs I recieved were decent, but over- smoked and tasteless. The remaining meat tasted as if jerky was reconstituted with the dip-spit of the only other customer in the place. In a word, I got it out of my system and will never, EVER, be walking through their broken screen ever again. read more

This place is the real deal. Screens not walls, breezes not ductwork, real smoke from a pit not liquid smoke in a slow cooker. The barbequed meat itself was pretty darn good, the reason this place lost a star from me is a pretty limited selection of sides. I don't like coleslaw, I don't like onions in my baked beans, and that's about all there is. The meat and sauces were good though, so as long as you don't have a HUGE appetite or a bunch of picky eaters you should be good. They do have BBQ baked potatoes, so if you're gluten-free that's probably a pretty good option for you. Be warned: they're HUGE! read more

Great bar-b-que, do not be put off by the WWII era building, they know how to bbq...furthermore, their drive up service during the "shutdown" was phenomenal, they had it down to a science. Gross!! The food was soooo gross! The only barbecue sauce option nearly burned my tongue off. We are being eaten alive by mosquitoes and no one came back to our table to check on us after bringing the meal. The sides were so small they were put in dressing containers. The only sides are baked beans coleslaw or potato salad. Don't waste your time. There was a really cute sweet old man cooking the food and I felt bad but I need to leave an honest review this place was awful. read more

Stopped by for dinner... had large rib plate... I love the unchanged, historical building and furnishings.... the service was great... and friendly... the ribs were top notch... the BBQ sauce was excellent... my only critical comment is the sides are just average... the cole slaw was the best, I am not sure if the beans or the potato salad was the worst... they weren't bad, they were just average... ordinary... this was my first visit, I will be back to try the beef and pork... read more

Decent grub. Not earth shattering and not a destination spot. Not sure why they were ever featured on TV, other than longevity. Standard, and probably consistent, home style cooking. The slaw was good. We ordered ribs and chopped beef (see pic). Baked beans were uneventful. The bread was regular white bread you can get from Publix. A-MA-ZING!!! If you're in the area and hungry, this is the place to stop. Hubs and I ordered takeout on a road trip, so we called in our order of pulled pork and beef sandwiches. For only a little over $12, we got the most tender, juicy BBQ ever sandwiched b/tw a bun. They serve it w/ containers of their sauce that has a sweet and tangy taste to it. The sandwich is good enough w/o it, but we tried it w/ the sauce and devoured those sandwiches! What I saw of the interior looked like a nice mom and pop feel w/ friendly staff and a perfect place for families. The smokers are inside so on a chilly FL night, you could sit near them to warm up a bit. We will definitely return here when we're back in the area! read more

In central Florida, there are very few places you can return to twenty years later and find it's exactly the same. Peebles BBQ is the same as it's always been, which is a classic. The ribs are tender and delicious, no sauce is needed. I don't know about the other meats they offer, since I always get ribs, but I'm sure they are fantastic as well. read more

I like the garlic bread and the beef brisket. Again, price is a little bit of an issue for me. The last time we ordered the family feast, it seemed like the price was a bit higher and the portions a bit smaller. The food is still good as ever, just not the same value it used to be. read more

Wow. You gotta try this. It's the kind of place that deserves to be on Diners, DriveIns, and Dives. The guy shoveling hot coals among the smokers gave us a quick tour. He said they go through 1,500 lbs of meat in the 3 days per week they are open. Really yummy. read more

I've found a new lunch spot. My neighbor and I stopped in for lunch after the gun range, what better day than shootin' up and headin' out for BBQ? We had heard about Peebles, and what a find we found at the end of the road. If you're expecting frills, this isn't the place for you.... No Air Conditioning, and you'll drink your weight in sweet tea to cool off, but it's worth every minute and I highly recommend this place. The pulled pork - fabulous Beef - fabulous Ribs - fabulous Will add to my choices on my next visit next week. My favorite part, the two smoke pits built-in from the old time cinder block style pit, fan system to keep the smoke out of the building, and it's obvious they built the building around the smoke pits. My next vacation home will be modeled in similar fashion. Price is excellent, portions are huge, the service was "good" even though it was Thursday at 11am and a full house by 11:10. Go early enough to get a seat, or you might wait. read more

We happened upon this spot after a soccer tournament in Auburndale, and were happy we made the stop! It's not fancy by any means, but let's be real... is "fancy" what you think when you think of BBQ? Peeble's is a local legend. They're only open Thursday-Saturday, and then only after Labor Day till Memorial Day. Lunch and Dinner can get quite busy. The atmosphere is, how shall we say, rustic. But it's the food that matters. The menu is rather simple, ribs, pork, BBQ sandwiches. There are three sides, Baked Beans, Cole Slaw and Potato Salad, plus white bread. WHAT! Peebles was FANTASTIC. It's the stuff that bbq lovers dreams are made of. I was starving, with a group of 10-15 people post soccer game from just up the road. Not knowing the exact location was eased by the fact I was riding my motorcycle and my nose told me exactly which way to go. It was packed (as any good place should be) but we were greeted warmly and efficiently. Sat almost immediately. Our orders were taken all simultaneously and the food came out within 10 minutes, amazing! Nobody had anything but great things to say about the bbq, from the pork, to the beef to the link. Best ribs I've ever had. The beans were near perfect and even though I have never really been a fan of slaw I ate the whole serving. As we ate, from across the full, bustling restaurant we were introduced to the staff and owners by our server. We clapped for them all. Next thing you know the surrounding tables were clapping loudly too. These people do a great job, balancing a full house and a fast moving take-out line with expert ease. My favorite place for BBQ. Only open 3 days a week with a very simple menu. I always get the ribs and my hubby gets the sliced pork(big chunks of pork without sauce right from the smoker) with three sides (potato salad, cole slaw and baked beans. The menu is on the wall and they only take cash. If you don't mind sitting with other people at a big table you might not have to wait. The people are all really friendly. One of the best barbeque places around. It is a small shack of a place that is closed July and August every year. The BBQ here is great and it always smells of barbeque. This is not a fancy place so don't show up expecting fine dining. Highly recommended. read more

I moved to Auburndale last summer and have wanted to check it out for quite awhile. A friend came in from out of state so we decided to go. It was delicious! We had to spot a table that would soon be available and introduce ourselves. The place was packed. It was a n opportunity to ask about the food. Those folks had been coming for years and had great suggestions. We got ribs & a side of the beef. Amazing! The building looks like it's probabyo original. The ribs are on a huge barbecue grill in the center of the building. The smells are mouth watering. I'll go there again! read more

Great homey atmosphere, it had the look and the smell of a top notch mom and pop BBQ joint. 3/4 full on a Saturday at lunch was a good sign. I tried the ribs because if you get ribs right everything else is usually as good or better. The ribs were ok. Not very meaty or flavorful. Sauce is a must... This Bar B-Q place has been around since 1947. It is closed in July and August. A lot of people don't know it even it exists, but it is packed most of the time. We've been going there for years.
