Peet's Coffee is at home in Berkeley, literally! After opening sixty years ago right here in the university town of Berkeley, California, Peet's Coffee has remained here and thrived decades later thanks to this location along the bustling Fourth Street corridor in the city's Oceanview neighborhood. This location probably has been around as long as the Fourth Street area moved from industrial warehouses to that of a commercial shopping and dining hub, as this location of Peet's Coffee is strategically located on the corner of a larger building that clearly served as something much larger eons ago and now serves as multiple businesses, including several high-end stores and restaurants. What constantly brings me to this location of Peet's Coffee is ease of location as there is very few competitive coffee shops in this area, at least a place where you can order a quick cup of warm coffee on a cold day, or blended drink on a cold day, other than this location of Peet's Coffee. What is so great about this location is that they have an outdoor courtyard area with plenty of seating that in turn overlooks an alleyway that leads to a parking lot behind the main building that houses their location that serves as a community gathering spot with music, dance classes and other activities often going on before our eyes. I have been to this location many times, ordering their trademark Frappés, which were briefly called Javivas before being renamed Frappés once again. There is nothing better than sipping on a medium sixteen ounce beverage from your straw as you walk around trendy Fourth Street and take in the sights and sounds of one of the nicer areas of Berkeley? Upon my last visit to this Peet's Coffee location is that they have given a huge upgrade to many of their locations, making the interior feel as if everything is batched and roasted on site as if everything is one big coffee lab, of course appearance can be deceiving as their new look is now moody with a dark black interior and a marble counter that now deliberately highlights their glass pastry counter. What I love also about Peet's Coffee is that their seasonal menu is constantly changing especially recently as this year in addition to your obligatory Peppermint Mocha for the holidays, they have added a Dubai-Style Chocolate Matcha to their seasonal menu, and so with my most recent visit, I could not resist, and since the line was so short, I was done to order this one drink. Containing a pistachio flavor plus house-made chocolate sauce, this seasonal drink is inspired by the trendy Dubai Chocolate and is topped with a matcha foam cream top and a sprinkling of crunchy salted caramel. It should be noted that a medium beverage for this particular drink is over 18 ounces for some reason, and the total cost was $7.50. Thankfully paying only adds to the ease of ordering, as Peet's Coffee, like their competition, has changed how one earns points after every drink paid for on the app. Nevertheless, the service is friendly and efficient at this location, as it would be mere minutes of me waiting at their side counter for my name to be called and for me to be sipping on my iced drink. First thing that I noticed was that there was way too much ice in this 18 ounce drink, as there wasn't much to drink overall, despite what the pretty pictures on both the television screen menus and the apps showcased. I liked this new Dubai-Style Chocolate Matcha, there just wasn't much to enjoy with this recent visit. Still a visit to this location of Peet's Coffee is a must, as their location and ease of access and wait time from entry to drink received is always a plus, especially with Costco consistently selling a five-pack of gift cards with an only at Costco discount, it makes for visiting this and any other location of Peet's Coffee an easy decision. May this and their other locations continue to reign the "Coffee Revolution" scene for generations to come! read more

Fun staff. Same delicious dark roast Peet's coffee is everywhere else. I like it. It's a large Peet's with plenty of outdoor seating. Just a few chairs inside maybe four or five. About thank you small milk with whip Napkins over here a little thank you oh no it's good. It's good. I just knocked it over trying to get the sleeve on. I'm not very good at it. I got it that many barstools too. Bathroom requires a code and there's almost always a line because of all the places that don't allow you to use their bathrooms in this shopping district. read more

1776 4th St Berkeley, CA 94710 This Peet's Coffee has a prime location in the center of Berkeley's Fourth Street Shopping Area. It has limited indoor seating, but has an outdoor patio. The counter area has alot of baked goods available, and non-coffee drinks. The other day, my coworker treated me to a cup of coffee at this location. We walked in just before 2pm on a Monday. There were no customers in line. I guess no one likes hot coffee when it's near 80*F in the shade. I ordered: 1 Medium Cup of Americano, $4.80, 12-oz ( That's Espresso + hot Water, I added 2 sugars) My coworker gave them a tip. The staff were really friendly and joked around alot. My disabled daughter and I go here often - she likes the hot cocoa and I like the lattes. Peet's is the best and the original. The guy who founded Starbucks trained at Peet's. This location is in a shopping district where they have gorgeous Christmas lights around the holidays. We have used the bathroom here multiple times, without any issues. Boy, talk about extra Prime location. This place was poppin' before, during and after our stop! Hubbers and I (with pup in tow) did our brisk walk around the area and we decided on a drink before heading home. It was a unusually warm East Bay day (which was kinda nice, especially for the season) so I felt like an iced matcha latte. Hubbers went for his usual regular latte. It took a minute before we found seating outside (it really does get crowded here!) but once we settled down, I went in for our drinks. Line was, as expected, also long, but servers got to us in no time. I also got a piece of their butter almond croissant to maybe elevate the experience a bit. FOOD (and drinks): 4. SERVICE: 4. Although there was very little interaction (understood - they were busy!) every staff member hustled to make sure everyone for their stuff as quickly as possible! VALUE: 3. Pretty average. I've never had to leave a bad review before, but after my recent experience and reading what others have said, it's clear that Salem needs to be let go immediately. She is consistently unprofessional, gossiping about regulars, being loud, and even yelling at customers. It's trashy and toxic behavior that doesn't belong in any reputable establishment. Most concerning: after I confronted her about her behavior, she retaliated by putting soap in my coffee. I became seriously ill afterward. This isn't just bad service. it's a criminal act. I'm in the process of filing a formal complaint and a lawsuit. Management must take this seriously. Keeping someone like Salem employed is a liability to your business and a danger to your customers. read more

Terrible service. We went to the store to buy coffee, and my boyfriend was adding honey to his cup and stirring it when the staff suddenly asked him to leave because they were closing at 7:30. It was only 7:27. He tried to explain that it would only take a second and that we'd leave right after, but they immediately became rude and demanded we leave right away. Things escalated when a staff member named Salem started yelling at us and threatened to call the police if we didn't leave. This was completely unnecessary--we were clearly about to leave. Another staff member, John, also yelled at us to get out. Meanwhile, the shift leader, a blonde guy, just stood there watching his staff scream at us without doing anything to diffuse the situation. We weren't doing anything wrong, and it wouldn't have hurt them to wait a minute for my boyfriend to finish stirring his tea. But instead of showing basic decency, Salem chose to threaten us with the police over something so minor. This experience was unacceptable, and no one should ever be treated like this. Outstanding news that Peet's is now offering Ripple as a much needed alternative to almond and oat. I strongly prefer Ripple over the other two for its neutral creamy taste that doesn't alter the primary taste profile of the drink. I hope that other establishments follow and offer Ripple as well. This location is generally well run versus other Peet's. Online ordering with the app is the best option to avoid waiting in line. Check out the discount offered at Costco for pre-paid, approx 20% off, which the cashier can help load into your app. One star off for sub-par bathroom; a dedicated bathroom attendant with hourly cleaning would likely be needed given the volume. They definitely served me either a tainted pastry or coffee (or both). I came here first thing in the morning the other day and ate/drank nothing else and about an hour later, I had severe food poisoning. I almost had to to to urgent care/emergency room. They are also not at all friendly here when serving you and the barista guy seemed like he was on drugs. Seriously avoid this spot! Nina and I came here this afternoon because the Smith Dobson jazz trio was playing right in front. First we sat on the walls by the band and then we decided to take a spot at one of the tables on the patio when one became available. It was a lovely, warm day and we needed the shade the umbrellas provided. While Nina held down the table I went in to buy her a coffee and me a tea to justify our presence on the patio. I was interested in a cookie, but the barista didn't hear me when I asked for it so Nina went in after I brought out the drinks and got one for us to share. The music was excellent and it was a great spot for people and dog watching. I even got into a lovely conversation w/ a young couple from New Zealand visiting family here, prompted by a shirt I was wearing that I had bought when we were in New Zealand 20 years ago. When I went to write this review I was surprised to discover I hadn't yet written one for this location. Yes, Peet's. Well, truth be told, I'd marry Philz, too, but I don't want to be accused of Cafe du Polygamy. I've been way delayed in providing the staff of this particular Peet's with praise. These days during shelter-in-place, it closes at 5PM and not 9PM anymore, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't say "I do" to Peet's. BE CAREFUL HERE!!!!!!! Alright service but had the craziest experience here. Not a reflection on their drinks. My friend and I were sitting and drinking our coffee outside on the patio. A sketchy looking guy was walking around and approached our table. He asked us for $1 and we responded "no, sorry." I don't often venture this far west in Berkeley, but since I was going to be in the area, I figured I'd give this Peet's location a try. Peet's is one of those companies that offers you a free drink for your birthday, which gave me extra incentive to visit. I decided to order a mocha strawberry frappe with 2% milk, as little ice as possible, large size. The staff were very friendly and helpful, and I was able to use their bathroom while I waited for my order, which was prepared quickly. As you can see from the photo, the staff made the drink nicely and filled it up all the way to the top, but the cup was sealed well so that it didn't spill. I really liked the sweetness of the strawberry blended into the drink and that the whipped cream mostly stayed on top of the drink, although you could probably really work it with the straw to get it mixed in. I was there around 10am and the interior of the store was mostly empty except for customers in line to order or waiting for pickup, which felt good for social distancing reasons, but there were definitely people sitting at the tables right outside Peet's to get work done. read more

Went there with my friend last night, around past 6 pm as I would like to introduce her my fave Pete's Havana cappuccino. I got myself a medium one and my friend asked for a small one. It was a nice ambience in the coffee shop, normal number of crowd for a cafe and we were able to find our seats by the waiting area by the counter next to the wall. I was disappointed, my first ever at Peet's. The Havana cappuccino tasted like a regular cafe latte. We approached the female barista and I told her that our coffees doesn't taste like Havana cappuccino, not sweet at all. This is what she said" oh! The recipe was just changed a week ago". I asked for condensed milk and so she gave us a few pumps on each cup but clearly she doesn't know the recipe as she did not offer the cinnamon powder which was not in our drinks at all as there was no scent or taste of cinnamon at all. We decided to let it go, but clearly we felt let down from a misinformation and poor customer service. read more

I really like this place but learned today that Peet's is closing this location across from the main Library. The manager said she has a place to land and I'm not sure about the other staff. There are other cafes. There's one across the street, and it is the Only business on that block. Makes me wonder if the building owners are getting ready to tear down buildings once the retail tenants leave. There is always a line here, and prompt service. So I can't see any other reason for them to close. Seriously, look across the street at the empty storefronts. There sure are a lot of expensive new apartment buildings going up. Are more expensive units a solution to the housing 'crisis'? As a renter who was evicted for these renovation reasons, I say this is not the answer. read more

It is beyond obvious that COVID is affecting everyone, individuals as well as businesses. For that reason, I am happy to see when places make (sometimes difficult) adjustments to remain in business despite current conditions. For that reason I was happy to see that Peet's has adjusted and is still in business. I ordered my hot drink via their mobile app and got a confirmation of the order acceptance right away. My pic shows their set-up for picking up pre-ordered drinks. The alphabetical arrangement makes it easier to determine which item is yours vs. the competing chain coffee company that just puts all the drinks in the same location - everyone is touching everyone else's cups trying to find which one is theirs. The only reason I wasn't 100% satisfied is the pick-up section is kind of in an awkward position (but it's the only option available so as to not block the strange entrance to this store) and not easily seen by the staff. It also wasn't frequently monitored. That means you may end up standing there a while before someone notices you and "are you here for a pick-up? What's your name?" read more
