My recent visit to Peggy's Place left me disappointed on multiple fronts. There are undoubtedly better dining options available in the city that prioritize customer satisfaction and offer a more enjoyable experience. Peggy's Place has made some renovations since the last time I was in Keystone. The front facing looks the same but the interior has been updated. Parking in front of the restaurant is still limited but there is additional parking nearby. The capacity is stated as 159 but the three times I have been there, I have only seen a maximum of 20 people. I do eat dinner early when I can, I shoot for 4 pm and do not eat anything until the next morning. I like the fact that it is family run business and the the food is made to order and homemade. I had the cheese omelette and hashbrowns which were reasonably priced and no complaints on the preparation. Breakfast is served until 11 am. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner with a descent number of options on the menu. In early July their credit card machine was down and they only excepted cash. I saw strawberry rhubarb pie on the menu and took a slice to go, really good. read more

We have been to Peggy's Place several times. You want some down home food you will find it here at Peggy's Place. It is convenient for us right now since we are in the RV Park next door. So we just walk over. Frantic service with a smile and everyone are so friendly. Food is outstanding!! I especially love the biscuits and gravy. They serve breakfast until 11:00. Don't know if they are open on Sunday. They close at 2:00 daily. They have awesome hamburgers and everything is well cooked and very tasty!! read more

On our road trip to Mount Rushmore, we stopped at Peggy's for breakfast. It was within walking distance of our hotel, The Rosevelt Inn. We also like places that have that family owned diner kind of vibe - and this place fit the bill. Although the service was friendly and the food was basic breakfast fare, there were a few issues I had with Peggy's. First, the coffee isn't great, but if you're ok with Folgers, then you'll be fine. However, the tea was watered down and not very flavorful, so if you're not a coffee drinker go with a soda or juice. Second, my wife ordered ham and eggs, but received bacon instead. When we brought it to the waiters attention, he simply said, "Sorry, I thought you said bacon," and then walked away. She never did get any ham. Third, their credit card machine was down and they had a sign to use their in-house ATM. Luckily, I had cash so that wasn't a big concern. However, being a little bit of a NY cynic, I wanted to document this just in case 3 week's from now it's still down and they are still raking in fees from their ATM. The sign looked old and the whole thing just struck me as a little shady. He really enjoys meeting the people and his joy is contagious! Food - 3 stars. Ordered a beef stew soup for our baby. It was not too salty and has lots of meat and veggies. Hubby got the half pound burger and customized with jalapeños. It was a bit dry but tasty nonetheless. I got the everything salads and it was a generous portion. However I suspected that the greens came from a bag. The place is at the foothills of Mt Rushmore so lots of tourists go there. I wish they would take credit cards! read more

We stopped in to Peggy's Place after visiting Mount Rushmore in the pouring rain. We were cold and wet and it looked like a good spot to get some warm comfort food. First impressions were nice. Classic midwest diner decor (anyone reading my Yelp reviews will see that I have an affinity for midwest diners) and a bit of a crowd. Service was extremely friendly, but quite slow. We were apparently on the early side for lunch (11:40am) and were told the kitchen was still converting over from breakfast mode. After a little prompting, our waitress confirmed that they did have mashed potatoes and gravy (something that the entirely family wanted on this cold, wet day). That brings me to the food. I was quite disappointed. I had an open faced hot beef sandwich. The beef was tough and the gravy was clearly out of a can or jar. My wife ordered Chicken Fried Steak. After being informed they were out of this, she switched to a Chicken Fried Chicken, which was maybe 1/8" thick and tough. Though the coating was crunchy, it was pretty clear to us that this was institutional frozen fare that had been dropped in a fryer (which needed an oil change). The country gravy was thick as porridge and again seemed to be out of a can. Lack of seasoning across all our dishes reinforced that this was basically hospital food. Sorry, Peggy and crew. We really wanted to be enchanted by your diner. While our waitress was sweet and helpful, what came out of the kitchen left us wanting. read more

While on this year's Epic Road Trip with my Boy (age 10), we were in Keystone for a couple of days. We age at Peggy's a couple of times, and had good experiences. It is not cheap, but we learned that nothing in Keystone is cheap. Our nearby hotel offered a breakfast, but it was basically all starches. The breakfast at Peggy's was very good, and a nice variety of things were available. The food was both well-prepared and tasty, and the coffee was also good. The Boy accidentally left his art supplies there when we headed out, and they set them aside for us to collect later. That was very appreciated. The next night, we ate dinner at Peggy's while our laundry washed in the laundromat next door. It was a choice born specifically of convenience, and the dinner was good as well. The Boy said his hamburger was great, and my buffalo steak was quite tasty. I agree with the review that rates the decor at 3 stars. "Clean but tacky" is accurate. But it's a pleasant kind of tacky. And I also agree with the same review's comment about the staff being very friendly. If I were back in Keystone again, I'd eat at Peggy's again. read more

I thought I did this review, but apparently I did not! We were there in June, so that was 2-1/2 months ago. The food here was horrible. It wasn't very busy when we went there...it was a late lunch. My husband and I like local places, diners and what we used to call "coffee shops," especially for breakfast. We knew Keystone was very touristy but most of the breakfast places in Custer (we were camping nearby) were closed on Tuesdays, and the reviews of Peggy's were pretty good, so we went there before going to Mt. Rushmore. Don't do it! This was basically a factory for capturing tourists for breakfast. There are two large rooms with basic tables and chairs (no booths). The "decor" is 1980's "country" -- stuffed cows, farm implements and signs with cutesy country sayings on the walls. It took a long time for the waitress to come to ask us what we wanted to drink. The menu is VERY basic and the food is bland and poorly cooked. There are no specialties and no fresh fruit or even sliced tomatoes. I had to cajole the waitress into letting me have a mushroom and cheese omelette, even though the menu listed a cheese omelette and a veggie omelette that included mushrooms. My husband's ham and cheese omelette was completely brown (overcooked) on the outside. The hash browns were undercooked and clearly came straight out of a bag from the freezer. When we were there, at about 9 am, they were already out of apple and orange juice. Additionally, as Phil B's review notes, there is a sign at the cashier saying that their credit card machine is out of order so they only take cash -- but they have an ATM. Phil wrote his review almost a year ago -- lots of time to get that machine fixed! Why not just be honest and say you don't take credit cards? (Because then you can pretend to be customer-friendly but still avoid vendor credit card fees AND rake in some ATM fees!) Only pluses: they bring the (warm and weak) coffee in a carafe, so you don't have to wait for refills, and the biscuits were pretty good (only grape and strawberry jam). We would have been MUCH better off with cereal and berries and good strong hot coffee in our cute 1954 camper! read more

I grew up in a tourist trap. I know about low expectations in a place where all customers are tourists. The food usually sucks and you are glad to have it. Well, not here. We ordered (for 4 of us - 2 kids, 2 adults) French Toast, Kids Breakfast, Biscuits and Gravy and the Chicken Fried Steak Breakfast....my advice. Do it. We put the plates in the middle and shared - family style. I'm a northern boy, so granted may not know good pork gravy if it slapped me in the face. But the little lady, she was born in Georgia...and she started fighting me for the plate. Oh, and she stabbed me when I went for the chicken fried steak. So, ya....it was good. On top of that, the staff was about as friendly as you will find. Again, nothing fancy. They did not wear white jackets any extra garbage. This place got four stars because of the service. The food was good. We ate there for lunch. My wife had a patty melt, and I had a club sandwich. Both of them were good. However, the good part comes when you talk about service. It was the time between lunch and dinner so there's only about eight tables full at the time. At one of the tables a baby started to cry.
