The notice at the front entrance says it all: "If we're closed, just slip your money under the door." Great local breakfast spot that has been around for a really long time and still going strong. We were seated quickly for a group of 6. Very cozy interior covered with pictures of locals/local celebs. A big breakfast menu with a ton of great options. I got the kitchen sink omelette (sans cheese) with a side of fruit and cinnamon raisin toast (not sure where they get the toast but it was SO GOOD). Well, it's called a "countryside cafe," and that is what it is. Peg's is very obviously a favorite with the locals. It's a no-frills, down-home food type joint that isn't fancy and isn't intended to be. Generally speaking, I love places like this. But Peg's was a bit tough for me to love on a few fronts. First, it's just super tiny. I did not expect it to be so small. As a result, the tables are kind of right on top of each other, you have a good chance of being asked to sit at a big table next to total strangers (something I really do not like), and people are constantly bumping up against you as the wait staff moves through the restaurant or people wait awkwardly for a table. It's a byproduct of the down-home thing, but I have to say it is not really very comfortable or relaxing to eat at Peg's, and it did not endear me to the place. Second, if you are not a local, you will know it. While we were there, it was common for a new party to come through the door and be hailed by other people who were sitting down, sometimes from all the way across the room. I think it's totally awesome that the community is so tight-knit, but on the other hand, it made eating breakfast seem more like you'd intruded into someone's large family reunion rather than going to a restaurant to eat. The walls of the restaurant are literally covered almost ceiling to floor with photos of patrons and friends. On one hand, that's cool. On the other hand, it really makes you feel like an outsider if you don't have any real connection to the restaurant other than wanting a meal. And, I have to say, if you have an active imagination, it kind of seems like all those people in the photos are just staring at you constantly. Finally, the food. The food was pretty decent. I ordered the corned beef hash benedict. While not as generous with the hash as say Fat Nat's, it was still pretty good and the hashbrowns were really good -- super crunchy and flavorful. My husband got a side of fruit with his dish and I mention it because it was the best side of fruit I'd seen in several years. It was really full of really awesome fruit -- not just your standard melon chunks and grapes. There were other aspects of the meal that were not so great -- the toast was blah and the coffee cups are seriously like child-sized. But overall I thought the food was pretty solid for a diner-type joint. So I guess I'm saying the food was good but the atmosphere just didn't work for me. I am quite sure that others -- especially those who are locals and are part of the "club" -- will tell me I'm full of it and that I don't know what I'm talking about. But those are my two cents anyway as someone from the outside. read more

We do breakfast here and it is always good. Sausage gravy is awesome and all breakfast items work a try. Always served hot with friendly hustling waitresses topping off coffees and checking on you. Always a great way to start the day. Mouse-shaped pancake for the daughter with some fruit - all devoured. Tex-Mex scrambler for me, clean plate. Nothing fancy, just well executed plates of food. This is still the Countryside Cafe even though Hamel is rapidly turning metro from country. With the world's biggest fast food chain sign hanging in the parking lot and the cookie cutter homes in the vanishing pasture the cafe building stands out as a roadside stop when Hwy 55 was two lanes and the city barely made it through Plymouth's boundaries. The accent is Fargo TV series real. "So can I get anything else then? Ok then". There is a handy selection of breakfast items served all day, at least until closing which is 3 p.m. I enjoyed the Corned Beef Eggs Benedict. The hash is squeezed under the eggs on top of a muffin covered, not smothered in a rich hollandaise sauce. The hash browns fill the rest of the plate and they were perfect. I have to deduct a star for bland coffee although they keep your cup full and the servers are pleasant. The prices are more than reasonable, the atmosphere is bright and pleasant with the walls loaded with pictures of evidently happy customers, well no one took my picture that's ok I took pictures of the place. read more
