Really terrible food. This was our favorite place, so three of us girlfriends decided to have dinner there. Disappointed how it has changed! Old grease made our noodles taste terrible, still can't get rid of the taste, overpriced and rude waiter! Prices quite high. The waiter was really rude. Asked if we could share the food to go and was obviously not happy . Threw the food in containers with it spilling out of containers, slamming dishes and stalking off. Wow! No way will we go back! I love their wor wonton soup! So much that we often drive out from Carlsbad when we're in the mood for Chinese food. Even my Jewish mother from NYC (a tough customer when it comes to Chinese food) said it was one of the best she's had. The wide crispy noodles and sweet and sour/mustard sauce combo also reminds me of the restaurants in NY. We also usually order the lettuce wraps when we're in the mood for a lighter meal, or if we're indulging perhaps the sweet and pungent shrimp with broccoli. The live piano music in the evenings is a nice touch. Unfortunately the service is not really professional; they basically just matter-of-factly take your order and drop off the food. The best Chinese food. Everything is so fresh and never lacks flavor. We have yet to try a dish that isn't amazing. The Sesame Chicken is so good! Peters Chicken is another favorite. Lemon chicken is always perfectly cooked and the sauce is great. Everyone you meet there is so friendly and we've never had a bad experience. First time here, and it's during this quarantine. The staff were excellent and extremely pleasant on the phone. I'm not a huge Chinese food fan, but felt compelled to try them and support my local businesses. Ordered a cup of egg drop soup (huge portion for a 'cup'), cheese wontons, veggie fried rice and 3 egg rolls. Food was awesome!! I arrived, it was raining, did the social distance thing, they greated me immediately, smiles and enthusiasm. I only brought $31 cash with me into the restaurant. I was a few dollars short, and the sweethearts just said, "no problem, it's raining, go home and enjoy!!!" Big hearts , I'm very appreciative, Thank you to the ladies at Peking Wok tonight! We order wonton soup, to go, got home and had no wonton's, not one! Called back they said they would give us a free soup, next time we came in. Took our name and number. But, when we went in again, 2 months later, they had no record of the soup mishap. And there soup is on the pricier side. When I refer people to a more upscale Chinese restaurant this is the place I tell them to go. Once inside you'll see a beautiful fish tank and a neat little bar in the corner if you want some privacy. The piano in the center makes for a good date night if you come while they have a pianist. Hate writing bad reviews (never do) but this place is not good. My husband & I grew up in the LA area (Gardena/Torrance) where we were surrounded by amazing food choices so we're always anxious to places we've never been...always in hopes to capture a great flavor. I'm pregnant and craving good Chinese food so we decided to give Peking Wok a shot for dinner tonight. Big mistake. It was very disappointing. We had the Cheese Wontons, which we figured, it's fried, who can mess that up. They were okay, but way too sweet. With the hot mustard, we managed to give at least 2 each a try. They tasted more like a dessert than an appetizer. We also tried the Chili Dumplings. These were a bit better due to the sauce & onions; but definitely had a frozen then boiled taste. We ate only a couple of those, but at least they were better than the wontons. For our meal we order Pan Fried Noodles with vegetables & Crispy Orange Beef with fried rice. The Beef was hard as a rock, and tasted somewhat burnt. It was like eating old jerky soaked in gravy that was not Chinese tasting at all. Gross! The fried rice wasn't even good that came with it...smelled like dirty socks. The Pan Fried Noodles with brown sauce was absolutely disgusting. The sauce was like a sweet gravy that had a vomit taste to it and the noodles & veggies were drowning in it. I thought, maybe just the veggies will be better. Psych! Not at all. We each took one bite, tried a second bite then spit it out. My husband wanted to just leave money on the table & walk out the door, but I insisted we try to be polite and just ask for our check and never go back. I wasn't sure how much our bill would be but I estimated that we spent around $50. Sure enough, $55 for food that I wouldn't suggest for anyone to ever eat. We quickly paid & left...never looking back. Maybe we ordered the wrong things, but Peking Wok gets a huge "Boo" from us. I guess I'll keep making my own fried rice & chow mein at home. read more

I'm really shocked about the amount of negative reviews for this place. I have never once had bad service or food here. I have had things I didn't like but it was because of personal preference and taste not about the quality. The plates are big enough that the hubs and I split a plate. We normally order the egg drop soup (best I've ever had), fried dumplings, and then an entrée. The food is consistently good and so is the wait staff. The hot tea is on the house and in the evenings they have a piano man play (my husband really enjoys this). They also give a military discount and so we normally get out of there for less than $30 (not including tip, dinner menu). read more

I'm not Asian. I don't plan on being Asian. I don't plan on being adopted by Asians. I took Asian Studies and got an "A" but I'm no more culturally sensitive than a pair of chopsticks. So bear with me for being an ignoramus when it comes to Chinese food. But I do know better than to call this authentic. I do know better than to call this the best Asian food in San Diego. But this much I do know: this was, without a doubt, the best American-Chinese restaurant I've enjoyed in my 24 years of eating non-pre-digested food. The location was not entirely auspicious. Although a Friday night, like most of Bonsall the strip mall in which it is located was deader than a doornail. But my brother was demanding Chinese food and, to tell the truth, I was looking forward to it myself. So with an empty stomach we entered, and we were kind of taken aback by what we saw. A caucasian woman sporting a hairdo like something out of a silent movie was the seating hostess, and an elderly gentleman took to the piano to entertain us with his jazzy impressions of the Great American Songbook. The restaurant felt American, with its clean white tablecloths, booths, indirect lighting, cofferred ceiling, and quiet volume. But cultural anachronisms aside, what we were most shocked at was that this place was PACKED. And packed with all sorts of people - teenagers on dates, senior citizens, families... a whole cross section. The restaurant scarcely pretended to be Asian. Instead, it showed itself to be a true, American restaurant in form... complete with a full bar serving up 12 different variations on the lemon drop martini and a rather extensive wine list. You won't get complimentary tea here, but frankly I don't give a damn... the free stuff always tasted like hot water anyway. The menu is quintessential Americanized chinese fare and after a little debate we went for paper wrapped chicken and a bowl of wor wonton soup for the appetizers, noting the slightly steep price. When the food arrived, however, the steep price proved commensurate with the portion size. The bowl of soup is HUGE, and extremely hearty. The pork wontons were stuffed, and three or four of them pushes one dangerously close to the point of being full. Our entrees of cashew chicken (rich, aromatic, and loaded with much more chicken than cashew), mongolian beef (which possessed a smooth and slightly sweet sauce), and lemon chicken (all white meat, prepared as a breaded loaf, with a tangy sweet sauce) were similarly huge... Three of us could only polish off half of it, and we had enough for dinner the next night. This isn't dim sum or whatever trendy culturally acceptable Asian meal that millennials are supposed to like - this is BIG FULL PLATES OF FOOD. And frankly, it's what I wanted and it's what I like best. So sue me. Service was very attentive if a bit lacking in personality. Our waitress was friendly but our water glasses stood empty more often than I like. As the night wore on, however, that became less noticeable. It's rare that one comes across a meal that comes complete with a side dish of live music that is conversational and soothing in nature. Jane takes her atmosphere seriously Bathrooms are extra clean and up to date Find on any evening a piano player at the Grand Piano playing various tunes from yesteryear -- many show tune and those from 60's and before The FOOD ----- all is made to order and the owner/chef will make anything to special request and dietary needs -- If you desire anything vegetarian they'll make it --- I had "Orange" tofu which was derived from the Orange Chicken dish on the menu --- Excellent -- served with Brown , White or Fried rice ... My daughter also had a tofu dish "Country Style Tofu" cut especially for a child . Oh, this place is the BOMB. Generally speaking, I will choose Asian food last in my list of cravings, but this one has become a serious contender. I highly recommend the sizzling rice soup. It's just amazing. I also really love the walnut shrimp. It will probably throw you off at first that they are a shade of green when they come out on the plate, but it's just the wasabi. Don't let it throw you off--totally amazing stuff. The hot tea is excellent, too. I'm kind of snobby about tea and hard to impress, but theirs is good. I don't aim to offend anyone but I have to say I just don't know what people are thinking when they give this place such rave reviews; we only tried Peking Wok on the high number of positive reviews. We had a big party and ordered a large variety of dishes; We ordered take-out and live extremely close to the restaurant, so I don't expect everything to be scalding hot but everything was almost completely cold by the time we got back. 1. Fried Shrimp: Nearly cold and tough, like they'd been sitting out a while.Also, they had a very strong fishy smell and nearly no flavor. 2. BBQ Spare Ribs: Tough, mostly fat and cartilage, coating on them was weak in flavor and they were nearly cold. 3: Pork Fried Rice: Lukewarm and tasted really old, like it had sat out and then microwaved. It was also extremely greasy. 4. Sweet and Sour Pork: Sauce was overly sweet, the batter was so thick all you could taste was a lingering flavor of old grease. Almost cold. 5: General Tso's Chicken: Breading was completely soggy like it had been out a long time and the chicken was tough and full of fat. Also had a strange underlying sweetness. 6: Almond Chicken: Same as above, old and tough tasting chicken with a strange sweet aftertaste. 7: Chicken and Broccoli: The single dish that was actually still hot and tasted fresh but the vegetables were undercooked and it was completely flavorless. 8: Vegetable Lo Mein (soft noodles): It was ice cold and was so over-cooked it about dissolved in your mouth. I nearly gagged on it and it was also flavorless...although, it could have tasted great it'd still be revolting due to the overly mushy noodles and soggy veggies. All in All, everything just had the taste and texture of old, re-heated food. And for the prices they charge it's pretty in-excusable. Did we just happen to try them on a bad night? I should have added to Peking Wok's 5 star reviews years ago. My husband and I have enjoyed countless dinners here. We always feel welcomed and well taken care of. Recently we ordered the Black Pepper Scallops (scallops sauteed in a zesty crushed black peppercorn sauce over a bed of baby bok choy and a touch of red wine) which blew us away! Once in awhile there's a chef's special such as "kung pao green beans" which is also really good. The vegetables in whatever dish we order are always crispy fresh. If I could give no stars I could . The food is very bland and over priced. I know they serve a older crowd and might not want to add salt. But this is the worst Chinese food I have ever had, my mom was visiting and she couldn't believe how bad it is. Hubby and I went in on an average Thursday night. There were 3 couples already waiting for tables when we went inside, so we knew we had to wait. Even though we stood at the hostess stand, no one ever acknowledged us. One by one the other couples were led to their respective tables, until we were the only ones left standing. Hostesses, servers continued to brush past us, never saying a word. After a few moments a new couple walk thru the door. The hostess looks up and asks how many we're in their party, collects menus, and proceeds to take them to a table. The couple protested, saying that we were there before them....at which time she looked up and said she could seat us in a moment. We informed her that it wouldn't be necessary, we would go anywhere else. I will never go back after such demeaning treatment. Shame on you! read more

The first time I went there was for a family dinner, and the service was terrible. The second time I went there was to celebrate fathers day, and the service was atrocious--albeit, the food is pretty good. To get to the point: the waitress doesn't introduce herself or smile, so much so in fact, that our entire party wondered if she had a descent understanding of the English language. There was four of us, and she messed up three different orders. It took twenty five minutes /after/ we ordered before they brought out our tea. Tea! Then she brought out the wrong starter item (a full 40 minutes after we ordered) and argued with my father about the order. She insisted that's what he had ordered (trust me.. it wasn't.) Finally, the main courses were brought out (55+ minutes after we ordered). The water refills were at 20-25 minute intervals.. and considering that the water glasses have the volume akin to that of a shot glass, that's sort of ridiculous. I don't think the waitress once asked if we were doing okay, if our food tasted good, if we needed anything else, said "you're welcome," nor did her face break into a hint of a smile. In summation: food is decent, service is awful, and bring a snack while you wait for your food... (perhaps a book, my girlfriend just chimed in!) read more

My husband and I are not from this area and have been searching for good Chinese food since we've been here. We tried this place based on the great reviews and got really excited about eating there. We were thoroughly disappointed. It wasn't even kinda good or okaay, even....it was terrible! And WAY over priced. My husband and I got 2 dinner entrees, an order of wontons and 2 eggrolls, and it was $50. Also, the cream cheese wontons had like a lemon or orange flavor to them. Very odd. This is the first time we have come here and it is a gem. Very clean courteous staff and the food is amazing. Not loud and cramped it was nice and quiet with piano playing.
