We came here on a weekday night and there were a few other staff here. My partner ordered the catch of the day and I ordered the vegetarian pizza. My partner said his fish plate was good but it wasn't the best fish he'd had on the island. My vegetarian pizza was fine but my main disappointment was that I had ordered the vegetarian pizza specifically saying like 2-3 times that I didn't want mushrooms. When I got the pizza, it was filled with mushrooms. I'm not sure what happened but the staff member didn't seem to care even after she saw all of the picked off mushrooms. So we went inside and the woman behind the counter told us "sorry we are closed at 7:30 today". So I asked if we could still just get a few beers on tap and she looked at me with a nasty look and tone and said "no, we are closed. We are mopping up the kitchen and leaving for the evening. We would like to take your money since we've only had one customer today". No apologies, no "hey there is a liquor store around the corner" nothing but contempt for us. They have plenty of deli items for lunch, and for dinner they have various entrees, appetizers, organic salads, pastas and pizza. I ordered the veggie pizza and it was ready in about 20 minutes. We arrived around 6:15 on a Wednesday night and there was plenty of parking outside and seating inside. We ordered hot wings and a meat lovers pizza. I got a Sprite and hubby couldn't decide on his beer. The owner Mark told him to try a new pineapple lager that he just got in and if he didn't like it, my husband wouldn't have to pay for it. He tried it and loved it. I just thought it was supercool of the owner to offer. The decor is SO COOL. License plates from all over the world. Literally. Some really fantastic vintage beauties. So fun to look at them all. Food: The wings. Oh myyy.. I would go all the way back over just for the wings. They are so delicious. You may have to get a basket for yourself. You've been warned. Pizza: I love pizza and I can be picky about it. I really liked this pizza. The crust had a nice crunch to it and the sauce was sweet and spicy. Lots of toppings and cheese. Oh, and HUGE. I went to Lana'i with the goal of eating at all the local restaurants during my 3 days on the island. I ended up only eating at two of the local eateries and I went to Pele's Other Garden THREE times. It was a combination of their selection, quality and friendliness that kept me coming back. From their sandwiches at lunch time to their pastas and pizzas at night, I enjoyed everything I ate there. My best meal there last month started with the Bruschetta and Caesar salad, followed by the amazing Toad Pizza, and ending with the Creme Brulee Cheesecake. As soon as we walked in we were greeted. Friendly customer service for this small establishment. They were only a few people here, but we were taken care of right away. There is outside seating, indoor seating, and indoor seating with bar tables and TVs. The drinks we ordered were delicious!! I ordered a ginger margarita. Really good. Our food came out hot and prompt. The quesadilla was full of flavor and we ordered the buffalo wings with sauce on the side and they came out perfect. For a small island, this is one of the few spots that has a full bar and serves great food. This seems to be the spot where the locals hang out too...so you know it's a good spot. On my recent visit to Lanai I made an effort to check out all of the local eateries in Lanai City. Let's be honest, there aren't that many. Of the casual local joints that surround Dole Park, Pele's was my favorite. I felt this restaurant had the most comfortable seating and atmosphere and was the cleanest. I appreciate the various beers they have on tap and I thought the pizza was tasty, although a little greasier than I'd like. Service was a little slow, but I just chalk that up to "Island Time" so it wasn't an issue for me. Pele's like everything else on Lanai, was pricey for what it is is, but again, I think that is just part of being on a small island in the middle of the pacific. Pele's was able to accomodate our party of eight and I had a great view - a view of the desserts in the case. We didn't sample the cheesecake or the chocholate cake but both looked yummy. In summary, if you are looking for casual fare in Lanai City, skip all the rest and hit Pele's. I know I wish I did! read more

9/15/2011: I waited to write this review because I was waiting for my credit card dispute against Pele's Other Garden to be resolved before I rated the restaurant . It was resolved yesterday, and as you may have guessed from my star rating, it was in my favor. The owners of Pele's Other Garden served us for dinner. The man was pleasant and talked motorcycles with us after seeing our 4 year old playing with a toy Ducati. The woman was nice but never got us anything we asked for. It became the joke of the week. Whenever we asked for something, she would cheerfully chirp, "Certainly!" then walk away and forget all about it. For the rest of the trip, "certainly" meant "you're never gonna get it sucka". We ordered a chicken parmesan pasta (tasted terrible), a veggie pizza (passable), bruschetta (meh) and he had a glass of pinot grigio. I found the food bland and overpriced, although overpriced seems to be the norm for Lana'i. I paid with a credit card and left the customer copy of the credit card receipt on the table because I had memorized the amount. Imagine my surprise when I received my credit card statement the following month and found that my new total was $80, $15 more than I had authorized and signed for. My bill had been around $50 and I had left them a generous tip--the total I had written on the credit card slip was $65. I was so pissed that they tried this dirty trick with me, knowing that I had left the receipt there and counting on me not to remember what I had paid for on vacation. Shame on them, trying to make a few extra bucks in this sleazy way. We're going back to Lana'i this weekend and we'll be sure to avoid this joint when we're in town. read more

The price of beer is good, but our bill was we were overcharged so we notified the waitress, then the manager came out and told us that he corrected part of it, but would not give us the happy hour rate on the last beers because the order was given to him too late. We let him know that we ordered before 6:30 and he started to clench his fists and argue. The waitress was super slow at taking orders and the beer took about 20 minutes to arrive each time, which was fine with us. But the attitude of the manager was awful. Skip this place. read more

OK, to start with, my travel partner and I really are beer snobs, so it's typical for us to try and find restaurants which offer a decent selection of taps or bottled beer. It's a bonus if the restaurant offers microbrews and/or local offerings. So we were delighted to see 12 taps at Pele's when we stopped in for a reconnaissance mission to scope out a place for dinner and drinks. We asked the owner about the taps and complimented him on the number of taps and quality selection of beer. We told him we'd return for dinner later that evening. He asked if we had reservations and we said no. "Do we need reservations?" Yes, it's best. We were a little perplexed since this is such a small island and community but we happily agreed to get out name on the list for 7pm. Secondly, I'd like to say that we both really wanted to like this restaurant. Honestly. It was right off the main square in Lanai City, very clean restaurant, lots of beer taps for to appease us and the Italian based menu had a decent amount of choices. So we get there at 7 promptly and were seated near the bar area but unfortunately that is where our dining experience mostly took a dive downhill. My partner had the bowtie pasta in a creamy pesto sauce with prosciutto ham and butterflied garlic shrimp. I ordered the sausage pizza and asked if jalapeno's could be added (us Texans love our jalapenos). The waitress said 'sure, no problem!' There was only one waitress and she was waiting on about 5 tables total, including ours. Our drinks took a very long time to come and each time between drinks we were both sitting there with empty glasses for 5 minutes or more, so her attentiveness was not there. The food. Oh the food. My partners pasta really wasn't tasty, it was, at the best 'ok', but for $19, we expected much more. The sauce wasn't very flavorful and the 4 shrimp on top appeared to be boiled and just laid on top. (that's the way it looked to us) He did eat it but we were both ravenous from the 8 hour hike we did earlier with a minimal lunch. My pizza was not at all good. If that wasn't a Cisco frozen pizza or a box pizza, then honestly I don't know any other way to describe it. The "jalapeno' peppers, weren't there, but instead what appeared to be sliced banana peppers were in place of it. When I questioned the waitress, she said 'oh they must have been out of them'. I nicely emphasized that banana peppers are no substitute for jalapeno peppers. She said she'd remove the pepper charge from the ticket. (Darn right!) The crust of the pizza was crispy like a thick saltine cracker and the sauce looked like it definitely was mass produced (from a can?). The sausage were small dime sized sausage balls, not sliced sausage like I had hoped. So I asked for the standard condiments with pizza (cheese and pepper flakes to sprinkle on the pizza) and they never arrived. I should mention that a small family of 3 came in and sat at a table nearby and ordered the large pizza. They ate most of it but we both saw the same look we had. It was obvious to us they had the same feeling about the pizza we did, just from their expressions and what was left on the plate. OK. So the beer was excellent! How can you mess up beer from a tap? Beer prices were actually decent too for Hawaii (5$ each pint) but the food and slow service was so bad that, on the next two nights we ate at other local restaurants and went down to the lodge to have some decent bottled beer. One other thing that my partner and I noticed. The owner definitely seemed to gravitate to attending (himself) to what appeared to be the locals while the waitress attended to what were obviously tourists. We also noticed that many tables were open during out entire meal, which made us wonder if the owner's strategy was to get us to commit to dinner by saying we needed a reservation. I can't prove that but it did make us wonder. I won't say that you shouldn't eat there but just be forewarned and pay attention to the general consensus of other reviewers. I wish we had done so and saved $30 in bad food. One more thing... there was an $8 charge for an additional plate request, so if you wanted to split a $16 pasta order, it just became $24 very quickly. That's sad. read more

Surprise, surprise, I went back. I was on Lana'i for mouflon season and we were looking for lunch and drinks. Of course, Pele's is the only game in town. I had prepped everyone with my past experience here, but I don't know if they quite believed me. We walk in, and there is Mr. Nice Guy. I let the three ladies of the party lead in, let's see what happens! Sure enough little comment after little, wise comment.. The humor was so dry, one spark and we'd have been goners. But this time I did see, it was in fact, humor and not.. pure prickism. I really didn't want to admit it, but I actually found a few things he said to be funny. So here it goes: I believe my first impressions were false. The New York style sandwiches were good, lots of meat, good bread, generous portions. Nothing mind blowing, but satisfying, yes. The onion rings are big and beautiful. Just how I like.. my onion rings. There were fewer number of beers on tap than earlier in the year, they no longer had Maui Brewing Co. which was a big disappointment. So for the hot afternoon, it was Stella's all around the table. Anyways, the bottom line is, this spot is "a-ok" with me. My apologies to those I may have steered away with my dramatic (though maybe justified) first review.
