There was some time left to kill before my favorite happy hour at DTH, so I browsed the Nagasako store and then Deli. ( notes, this is 2 seperate shops) Major hole in the wall, which I LOVE. They were pretty busy, with a line outside, the shop is small so we had to wait to enter. The Okazuya items looked good, after glancing & unsure what to order I went back out to check Yelp real quick and read that the shoyu chicken was good. I went back in and got a plate of shoyu chicken, which comes with 2 piece, side and rice. I paid $1. extra for chow fun. The plate was cheap, $11.00! Since I was bringing the plate back to Oahu, the lady was nice to separate the shoyu chicken sauce. I didn't want it to spill bringing it back. She even saran wrapped it. I didn't get mac salad as wouldn't be good by the time I got back to Oahu, so I got corn and string beans for sides. We tried the chicken and OMG everyone was right. Best spam musubis. Perfect rice to spam ratio. The seafood wrap wasn't chewy. My kid kept asking for spam musubis but SPECIFICALLY from this place. We're home now so I can't help him out there. Best loco moco we had on the island. Their Beef Patties were nice and full but not too big where it takes over the dish. For my next trips to Maui, I would only eat here and grab Poke from FOODLAND next door and be set. No need for any other food in Maui. Super easy grab and go. A little rice heavy, IMO. 3/5 - Chicken katsu ($8.95): Chicken had minimal crunch, unfortunately. I wish we'd found out about Nagasako Okazuya Deli earlier in our trip, but alas! This hole in the wall is dishing up some fresh Hawaiian/Japanese fare and for great value too. We couldn't believe the plate lunch was only $13 for a generous serving of pork adobo, two scoops of fresh rice, and one scoop of macaroni salad. Their mac salad was probably one of the better versions I had on my trip as well. We also snagged a couple of spam musubis and two pieces of fried chicken (thighs) for our beach picnic. Best idea ever. In total, we spent less than $25 for a meal that could easily feed 2. Nagasako's musubi was way fresher than any other we'd previously tasted (we'd purchased some from the grocery store across the street to compare). Nagasako Okazuya is located in the Lahaina Shopping Center across of Foodland. Next to it, is the Nagasako General Store Due to Covid, only three customers are allowed in at a time. Stop by the Okazuya to build a plate lunch with mac salad or corn as sides. You walk in to see freshly made spam musubis, containers of pre- packed food, and a display of their daily offerings. You can customize your plate with a variety of local favorites such as breaded teriyaki, shoyu chicken, hot dogs, roasted pork, chow fun noodles, chicken katsu, chinese sausage, and many more. The Okazuya offers daily specials and you can also order pans of food to go. I love to stop here for breakfast. You can build a breakfast combo with rice, hashbrowns, portuguese sausage, sausage links, bacon, and scrambled eggs or pickup a ready to grab containers of fried rice with scrambled eggs and breakfast meat. Their shoyu chicken is my favorite plate lunch! The Okazuya is just off of Front Street so we like to pickup breakfast then find a spot to eat on Front Street to look out at the ocean. I always grab a couple spam musubis for later in the day. They open at 630 am and there is typically a line. Don't let that scare you, the line moves quickly. Haven't been here in years. Prices are still affordable. Food looked great at the display case. Chicken katsu was great with the sauce. The sauce was quite sweet which I liked. I did not like the Chow Fun. It was plain and hardly had vegetables. I could hardly taste any sesame oil. It was so plain and unappetizing. It was a good thing I got there before 12pm. Nagasako Okazu-ya Deli is a truly local gem. I just wished we knew about it earlier while we were waiting in the super long line at 808 Grindz. Here, a full meal consisting of a protein of your choice, macaroni salad, and a massive amount of rice can cost $13 or less. We got the pork adobo which they piled on and was incredibly tender and fatty. They also had spam musubi that was made daily and contained a generous amount of spam with fresh rice. This deli and plate lunch takeout spot is a terrific local gem located right across from Foodland in Lahaina. The line out the door was 6 deep when we arrived on a weekday at 11 am. The staff were very courteous and efficient, with a changing station of hot food options to choose from as they make your plate lunch, along with a self-serve tower of spam musubi's. The deli also has assorted drinks and some snacks, with more available in the general store next door. We really enjoyed their shoyu chicken (carmelized skin with the right amount of saltiness), fried chicken (crispy and well seasoned) and spam musubi (which were all fresh). Their cheeseburger is pretty good. It had a nice flavor, but I didn't a chance to eat it until I got to the airport an hour later. So it would have been better if we had eaten it right away. We tried to shoyu chicken and roast pork, both were delicious, season perfectly and super super tender. I personally prefer the roast pork more than the chicken. I think the 4th generations runs this place which is super cool and we love to support them. The prices were also extremely reasonable. One thing though; it's to go only. I was on a mission to try something new, but after visiting 2 establishments only to find them closed... it was almost 1PM and I was getting desperate. My hunger was beginning to cloud my judgement and I contemplated just going to McDonald's for a split second. Luckily I remembered reading fellow Yelp Elite Ray R.'s review of Nagasako Okazu-Ya Deli. I walked in and was relieved to find a room full of locals and readymade food - a whooole case of entrees for me to pick from. A quick glance at the old school menu (it looks like it's from the 80's or 90's) reveals modest prices starting from ~$8 a plate; a steal for the tourist laden Front St. area. I ask for the breaded teriyaki plate only to get, "Oh I'm sorry, we're out! That's usually the first thing we run out of." Shucks. I didn't make a back-up plan and in a panic I picked the hamburger patty plate + a side of lup cheong. WTF. Why did I pick that I asked myself?! I had to laugh at this point. Whatever. As long as I had food. It must have been serendipity because once I took that first initial bite of my hamburger..... brah. Buggah wen hit da spot! Was SO ono (good), da Pidgin English wen come out. HAHA. For real though. I was really shocked and happy. It was so surprisingly good and reminded me of grandma's home cooking. I mopped my whole plate clean. My son enjoyed it too! Nagasako Okazuya was another on Yeep Fran C's list of places to check out on Maui. Turns out they were only two blocks away from the dive shop I used. Like other okazuyas on Maui, they're converted to serving hot food instead of featuring a traditional Okazu menu, with the added bonus of being a convenience store. Picked up a quick bento of fried chicken and a spam musubi for less than $5 for my 4 dive day. This was my small kid school field trip meal, which is why the taste resonates with me all these years. Had to cheat a little and took a bite out of the hot fried chicken thigh before I packed it away for the day. Hot, crunchy, nicely seasoned- just like obachan (grandmother) made! Is there anything like it? No, not really. Along with a couple of pieces of pork hash, the bento was the perfect size to eat for lunch between my two two-tank dive trips- filling and satisfying without being bloated and uncomfortable for the afternoon's dives. I didn't have a chance to look up the place and stumbled upon the location while waiting in line at 808 Grind. They are in the SAME plaza. People go in and out the door non-stop! BREAKFAST My Lahaina friends have told me about Nagasako's for quite some time now. I just always choose more popular options while on that side, but today I finally gave them a try and I was not disappointed. I am a fan of Bloody Marys but they do not serve bloody marys here. I ordered their Breakfast Special ($4.95) and it comes with scrambled eggs, hash browns or 2 scoops of rice and choice of bacon, hot dog, pork link, portuguese sausage, or spam. Their other breakfast option is the Loco Moco. My buddy ordered their "Mini" Loco Moco ($5.05) and he told me it is usually what he orders there. The regular Loco Moco ($8.75) is the same thing except 2 patties and 2 scoops of rice with scrambled eggs, where the Mini one has the eggs with 1 patty and 1 scoop of rice. My friend told me later that he see some locals with extra meat so there might be an option to add on extra meat and sides. It is definitely worth asking about as I am sure any add-ons will be overly reasonable in price. Or perhaps there is a big breakfast special I did not notice. The service here is excellent. The only true complaint I have is there is not a comfortable place to sit to enjoy this food. Just outside the door are a couple tables, but the neighborhood is a little sketchy. Perhaps you are best off taking the food home or to a nearby beach. No Kama'aina discount here, as everything is already beyond reasonable for what you get. Breakfast hours 630 until sold out, which she said is usually around 9. They are closed Sundays. Parking is kind of strange here. Park right in front of Foodland and the entrance to the Deli is across the way. The other side is only the general store. I am glad to have finally checked this place out. One of the most affordable spots on the island, and the food is still great. Unless I am in a hurry and need drive through food, I will always choose Nagasako's over McDonalds when looking for early morning food on the west side, but not looking for a sit down restaurant. read more

Musubi. Go here for Spam musubi. You wouldn't think that a seaweed wrapped, Spam and rice roll would be so good but the simplicity of it is what is so great about musubi. They make an admirable version of it here. We grabbed one of the last ones left for the day and were so glad we could indulge in an island favorite! What makes this particular musubi so good? I don't know what they do to the Spam but it isn't a punch in the gut salt bomb like others I've tried. Maybe they dilute it somehow but the Spam here has a less salty taste which allows more of the meaty pork flavor to show through. The rice is also near perfection, soft but not mushy at all, and you are able to distinguish between the grains of rice as you chew. We also shared a shoyu chicken plate. It consisted of 2 marinated chicken thighs, mac salad, and rice. The chicken thighs were tender and the marinade was great. The mac salad was cool and refreshing and went well with the chicken and rice. I also tried an eggroll which was alright, nothing too special, with your basic mixed vegetable filling. Service was brusque at best. They seemed a bit grumpy here but I guess I would be too if I had to stand in this tiny little shop all day with no A/C. The store itself is small and dingy feeling. A real hole in the wall type place. The various dishes they offer are premade and sit in warmed trays. There isn't any seating in the shop but we ended up sitting outside on some shaded benches and tables. We had a pleasant meal, enjoying our food and watching cars and people go by in the parking lot. read more

It's been years since I last stepped foot in here, but a recent bento that was bought for me sparked my Yelp engine to write a review! ATMOSPHERE: I remember it as a simple mom & pop shop that's still located in the Old Lahaina Center (where Foodland is.) They have a small grocery selection and best yet, prepared foods! Parking can be a pain with the numerous businesses that share the parking lot. FOOD: Boiled Peanuts - I won't let this count towards my overall rating because it happened years ago, but we ended up with a bag of old peanuts, as the exterior was slimy! Yuck. They didn't smell, but I declined to eat them as I've never had boiled peanuts that were slimy. My spouse, who is from the mainland, kept eating them anyway, didn't get sick and is still alive today lol. Hot Dog, Eggs & Fried Rice Bento- Like judging a book by its cover, the bento, especially the fried rice, looked boring and under-flavored. I was pleasantly surprised at the tastiness of the rice as soon as it hit my tastebuds, especially since it wasn't decked out with any veggies, meats or decorative toppings. Zero condiments were needed on it. The scrambled eggs were fluffy, the red hot dog was good, and the portion size was perfect. Highly recommended breakfast option! So today I was on Maui..........as I was doing a job at a bank. Upon finishing up the job, it was now time to grab something quick before I head back to the airport. Next thing you know, I see this place called "Nagasako Okazu-Ya / Deli". I see a lot of locals, & tourist going in & out of this place so I decided to pop on in, to see what's it was all about..... As I walked in, I see the spam musubi, but it got the override once I saw the fried chicken..........then I thought, - "man I better nix that idea too, cuz I gotta meet my friends - Cathy & Sharon for a "Fried Chicken Friday" one day", so I better take a pass on this........... I scan all their delicious dishes behind the counter, and I see one of my all time favorites (besides beef stew), I see the "Shoyu Chicken". I ended up getting the Shoyu Chicken plate - which consisted of 3 pieces of tender, fall off the bone, with a slight sweetness chicken, two scopes of brown rice, and veggies (corn/green bean mix). What can I say about the grub.........chicken was really good! I like it when the chicken meat is so soft that it easily falls off the bone. As for the veggies, which consisted of a mixture of corn & green beans.........this tasted like it was just canned vegetables mixed together.......a little "bleh" for me. Brown rice...........how can you mess that up..........but I'm glad they offered it. There is no place to sit inside.........this is like a "kitchen counter", where you buy your food, they go outside & find someplace to eat it. But a small tip for you folks - there are a few (3) small concrete tables & stools outside, just adjacent to Nakasako's, so you can grind your food there. Parking is not a problem, as there is a ton of parking at the strip mall. There are other business in this mall, like Foodland, Starbucks, American Savings Bank, etc. .......... Damage for the grub - Dirt Cheap...........plate was $7.50, but I added a bottled soda, so it came in just under $10.00, not bad at all.........it hit the spot just right, as I had to get a very early start this morning.
