I have had good dealings with Pelham Auto in the past. I just returned from them, having had probably the worst customer service anywhere in years. I first waited several minutes while the agent (not Jason, who is very professional), finished up with another customer, then spent some time shuffling papers. When I got the agent's attention, I started to describe my situation when the phone rang. "Let me take care of this." Ten minutes later I was still waiting. When he finally got off the phone, he asked me why I was there, all the while playing with the papers in front of him. My problem was with the air conditioner. "We don't do air conditioners anymore." I told him I wish he had told me that ten minutes earlier. "We didn't get that far." Why on earth not?? I would still go back because I believe they do good work at a fair price, but only if Jason is standing at the desk. read more

Update: they never called me, made me call them at 440, when they close at 5 and I would not be able to get my car until Monday if I didn't pay over phone without seeing invoice which they said they would not email in time UNTIL I gave them my debit card number. Once I did that they were more than happy to email my invoice. 50 some dollars over highest estimate given. To their credit, they did knock something off so it came in $20 over highest estimate. These folks REALLY need customer service assistance. Brought my 2003 VW Beetle (but new to me) in because of problems with cooling system. I went to Pelham Auto because that is where previous owner had gone and my trusty faithful mechanic of over 20 years does not work on VWs (that's Mike at Z Auto if you have a Toyota). So I brought it in on Wednesday, and here it I'd Friday afternoon at 2:30, and they still cant tell me if it can be done today. When I called on Wednesday at around 3 to see if it was done, they told me they hadn't even looked at it yet. When they did look at it. It was already too late to order parts. So parts not getting in until Thursday, for some reason it would be Friday before it would be done. And now here it is Friday and they cant promise it will be done. Let me add that they are replacing two connecting parts to my water pump. Doesn't sound too exotic and does not require the engine to be pulled. So here it is 300 on a Friday. I'm out of town, looking to the kindness of friends to pick up so they can return the rental car I had to rent because of the delay, and I still have no answers. They asked ME to call by 5 so I can pay and avoid another 3 days of rental car I am not even driving. Pay being if it is even done. This place may do great work, but they need some serious work on customer service. Oh, and I should add not cheap. They make no attempt to find used parts for an older vehicle or other ways to mitigate ti our expense. Go right to Volkswagen to get the new parts. I give them a 1 and I dont even have my car back yet or even seen the bill. read more

They will take care of everything that is needed in each repair, while some shops will just go with what you tell them. I've had my Subaru there several times and most of the time they gets things fixed right. However, they almost never finish on time. Even if you take to trouble to get your car there early, they often don't diagnose it until the afternoon and then it's too late to get it fixed that day. Count on 2 days even for simple repairs. Yes, I had an appointment. Sure they have troubles and set backs; people don't come in, the power went out, I've heard all those excuses. For a worker owned shop they need to do better to compete. read more

My parents have been going to Pelham Auto for decades, and they've generally been great. Clearly there's been a change in management, though, because one of the younger mechanics there is either incompetent, lazy, dishonest, or all of the above. I took my parents' car in because a big piece of metal was hanging down from the undercarriage after the car went over something big. They said they'd put in on the lift and look at it. When they called us back they said they'd put it up on the lift and couldn't find anything. My father insisted this was wrong, and the older mechanic who was there agreed to put it back up on the lift and look. Sure enough, there was the obvious (even from crouching next to the car, let alone with it up on the lift!) big chunk of metal that had been ripped loose. Turns out it protects the high-voltage wire, so this was not only noisy but potentially a safety issue. The older mechanic said he wasn't going to say anything about the younger mechanic missing this (or lying about having even looked) because last time he complained about shoddy work by the younger mechanic he got a lot of grief about it. Why in the world would management protect an incompetent/lazy/dishonest mechanic, and give the mechanic trying to maintain reasonable standards grief??? Anyway, be warned that depending on who works on your car you may get dangerously bad service. read more

I started going to Pelham auto about 8 years ago when I bought a used Subaru that had all its work done by them. I've continued going there with my current car because I feel comfortable with them and satisified with their work. They're friendly and explain problems with the car clearly, giving me more and less expensive options. I've never felt they were doing extra work that didn't need to be done, but instead gave me a clear outline of their recommendations and the implications of a range of options -- from doing nothing, to using parts from one of their parts cars, to doing all repairs. I've not had a problem in terms of timing -- they are usually willing to look at my car right away and if it needs more extensive repairs, I tend to leave it for the afternoon or overnight. I see a diverse range of customers there -- men, women, older, younger, folks who know nothing about cars to folks who come in with questions about their self-made repairs. read more

I have been with Pelham Auto now for more than four decades. I must be one of the few that still remember that they used to be located on Route 202 in Pelham. In any case, I have taken all of the cars that I have driven over these decades to Pelham Auto, and never had an problems with them. They know their stuff, they are conscientious, and they do things as inexpensively as possible, while providing the owners (that is, the workers) I fair wage. I trust them completely! read more
