We stayed last night at The Pelican Inn and Suites. Our stay was delightful. The room was wonderful. But by far the best part was the staff. As we were preparing to leave we realized that we had lost our keys. Sam at the front desk immediately began helping us as well as the maintenance crew. One of the groundskeepers found our keys!! We really enjoyed our stay. My wife booked this hotel through a 3rd party. Our only complaint would be the parking (we have an SUV) and couldn't fit in the compact parking they have. And the water pressure, it's was very low as were the sinks. I did like that each of us had a sink and there was plenty of space for us to get ready in the morning since both sink areas had mirrors. There's also a lot of walking paths near by and some good restaurants Try the moonstone bar and grill! We would definitely come again. read more

Currently staying at this hotel - walked into breakfast at 7:30am - there was nobody at the front desk so I walked slightly into the adjacent room to find someone. Apparently there is a sign saying tasting open at 3pm. She blatantly told me "Can't you read that we are closed on that side" Extremely rude & the breakfast was not even ready- she said the coffee is still brewing. Will definitely not stay here again. We stayed here on our most recent trip to Cambria as it is only a few minutes away from Hearst Castle. The two rooms we had were decently clean and comfortable, but extremely basic and all around average. There were fireplaces in the rooms, though one of them didn't work correctly. The location is great, with a neat little boardwalk that runs along the beach that is just across the street. It can be a fabulous place to watch the sunset. The rooms themselves don't have much in the way of views, though there are a couple with small patios and balconies. Not too many that offer an unrestricted view however. You need to walk across the street for that. As most people have noted, the hotel no longer has breakfast included, which is kind of a bummer and would go far to improving the experience here. They do have free coffee and tea in the morning which was nice. The power went out during our stay and staff was very accommodating. Overall 3.6 stars, rounded up to 4 as decent enough but not great. read more

Breakfast Sucks Other hotels on same strip have nice breakfast. Rude and no seating here. At least have a continental breakfast. They advertised a hot breakfast but I guess that was in previous years. They changed it to a cheap continental breakfast of Yoplait, yogurt, bananas, and some Lemon cake -ugh. We got scolded because we were early and just wanted to sit down. Felt like we were five years old. We liked this place years ago now a no. If you want your room clean because you stay there more than one night you have to make a special request. They don't even give you enough coffee cups for two nights no fresh towels. We came home late and found our room, not clean. We spoke to the manager and he didn't seem to care. He said that's our policy and then we didn't have a parking space when we came home and he said park across the street. The Internet sucks if you wanna pay for good Internet it's an extra $15. There's no place to hang out all the other places have fire pits. This one has nothing except for a pool and a hot tub and they're both in separate locations, the rooms are OK. read more

Had to leave after first night due to loud pipe noise. Our room (418) sounded like it was right next to where all the water runs from all the rooms. We encountered loud screeching noise for several hours in the late evening and heard water draining almost every time a toilet flushed or a sink or shower was turned on. Furthermore, there was nobody at the front desk in the evening and we could not get any help with out issue. We decided to leave a day early and when we checked out, we had no sympathy or the suggestion of moving to another room. The first words out the the front desk clerk's mouth was "because you used a third party for booking, you will not be refunded". I emailed the assistant general manager, Sam Martino, and although he replied to my email and acknowledged my concerns, he offered no refund and stated that due the age of the building, there would be noises etc. After emailing again, I was offered a 15% off my next visit. I am very disappionted that they didn't want to do better by a customer. I know things happen that are out of our controI, but there is always an opportunity to make things right. I feel the assistant manager and his staff did not want to go the extra mile to make sure we were happy with our stay. And although the room was clean and quaint and the establishent itself was well kept, we choose to not stay there again. read more

Three of us. We had the family suite next to the office 2bd 2bath. No private patio. Seating against the wall outside our bedroom window! We stayed three nights and every morning talking people sitting there at 7:00 a.m, there was also a table for six a few feet away from that that also got filled up between 7:00 and 7:30 daily. Breakfast was a joke. The first morning it was coffee, water, and a few pieces of lemon cake. The second morning, coffee one piece of lemon cake at 8:00 a.m. possibly from the day before. The third day coffee, a little juice, few pieces of fruit, granola bars. Zero Fresh bakery items as advertised. On our third day my sister went in to the office a few minutes after 10:00am and there was all kinds of stuff in there (breakfast ends at 10:00), including bakery items and the person attending the office said it was for a PHOTO Shoot. They were not available for customers!! Do not stay in suite 100, and don't count on breakfast. read more

Pelican Inn & Suites is such a gem! My stay here was truly relaxing and memorable. The location is perfect right across from Moonstone Beach so you can wake up and literally walk out to the ocean. The views are absolutely beautiful and so peaceful, especially during sunrise and sunset. The room was cozy and super comfortable. We had a fireplace and a little patio where we could sit and enjoy the ocean breeze. Everything was clean and well-kept, and the bed felt like sleeping on a cloud. I have stayed here for the past 25 years. We celebrated our 32nd wedding anniversary this last weekend! Unfortunately, there were a couple of disappointing factors. We had no internet, and no thermostat in the room. We had a standard room. When we checked in we asked if there was an upgraded room, but said no. My wife and I were traveling through Cambria CA on our way to Half Moon Bay. We stopped for one night going and one night coming home. We stayed at the Pelican Inn and Suites, just across Moonstone Beach Drive from the coast. We had two distinct experiences on these two stays. First night (going): We reserved directly with Pelican Inn for both nights. When we checked in, the woman was friendly and showed us where to park near to our room in Building 3, room #313. The room was nice, clean, with a comfortable bed, decent view for a ground floor room with the ocean just across the street. My only disappointment was with the toilet which was very low, as you might encounter at a grade school. Well, and the $5 bottles of water annoyed me, too. What do they think they are, an airport? But in all, it was a decent stay. Second night (coming home): We checked in with a young woman who seemed to not want to be there. We were assigned to room #314. She informed us with no regret that the parking lot for Building 3 was being paved with asphalt and wasn't available. We could park in the lots for either Building 1 or 2 or use public parking across the street. We got the last spot in Building 2 and decided to skip going out to dinner so we wouldn't lose it. We were still close to our room, which was next door to our previous room. The rooms were identical but in vastly different conditions. My guess is that the Pelican Inn was undergoing renovation and that #313 had been renovated and #314 had not. It featured the same low toilet, but the sink was cracked, baseboards were grubby, outlets needed attention, and the bathroom door didn't fully close. The asphalting crew was out early the next morning spreading the slurry coat on the parking lot. We went to breakfast and came back to check out and to use the bathroom. As one of us was doing the latter, a staff member came to the door--which was next to the bathroom door that didn't close completely. Kind of uncomfortable. What annoys me is that they had to know, in advance, that the parking lot would be undergoing paving when we reserved the room, directly through Pelican Inn, not some third party. They also had to know that room #314 was substandard. But they booked the rental anyway and charged the full rate. The second room wasn't at all what you'd expect given the price. With so many places to lodge in Cambria, I don't see Pelican Inn making the cut unless you're happy to roll the dice. read more

We have stayed at Pelican several times in the past, and reading my last review 8 years ago there seemed to be a quite delicious and extensive included breakfast. If you want breakfast now, you can order and pay from a local restaurant. The rooms don't seem to be updated since my last visit. I got an email the day before check in to pay an extra $80 to check in 2 hours early. When I showed up at 2pm to check in the front desk acted like they've never heard of this and said check in was 4pm. She said she would call when the room is ready. We ended up checking in at 2:45. Not worth the $80 extra for basically an hour early check in. So, the place is clean, the location is magnificent, but the lacking breakfast and semi dated decor will make me look for a different hotel next visit. read more

First time staying here. We had a king bed room, but suite. Check in was pretty quick and friendly in the late afternoon. Upon entering, we could tell the room had been remodeled but I dare not guess what it looked like before. Floors are some sort of vinyl plank and I've actually gotten used to hotel carpet and and so I missed it. The bathroom is basic far; shower-tub, toilet, sink with ZERO counter space. And ZERO hooks to hang towels/toiletry bag. The mini fridge, which truly is convenient to have, unfortunately hummed VERY loudly through the night. The bathroom pipes are noisy and I had to get up at night to shut the bathroom door all the way. We heard footsteps upstairs as well as noises outside. We got a 300 number room right next to the "employees only" door, which in the early morning, seemed to be opened and closed a dozen times. Pros: Mini fridge, microwave, coffee maker, fireplace (main source of heat), full size shampoo, conditioner and body wash in the shower, nice lavender body lotion, decent water pressure, heater in bathroom. Room has ceiling fan (main source of cooling aside from opening the window), closet with a few hangers, luggage racks, cable tv, WiFi, outlet in the beside lamp to charge device. Cons: No counter space in bathroom, no hooks to hang towels, noisy pipes, low grade toilet paper. No complimentary breakfast (the inn a couple doors up has a complimentary egg breakfast if you want), no room service (they come on the 3rd day of your stay), one day worth of coffee/cups for coffee maker. If you need more coffee or towels, you have to go to the lobby and ask. Water is not provided for coffee. They leave 2 bottles of Fiji in the room but they're each 5 bucks if you use them. There is a pool and hot tub. The hot tub is located in the back corner of the parking lot, a rather odd location in my opinion but saw people using it. If you're looking for no frills, this will work. If you want something a little nicer, keeping looking. read more

The hotel receptionist was very sweet upon check in (another at check out was not as nice), but the location can't be beat. Highly recommend! We booked a room with a patio facing the beach, and let me tell you, waking up to the sound of the waves is an experience I could get used to. The rooms are clean and well-equipped, with a decent-sized refrigerator and microwave--great for leftovers from the nearby restaurants within walking distance. Bonus points for being pet-friendly, so the whole family (furry friends included) can enjoy the stay! Having a coffee shop next door is another win. Nothing beats grabbing a fresh brew and heading out for a peaceful beach walk. The location truly makes it easy to relax and soak in Cambria's charm. The room was filthy. There was dust on the cabinets, stains on the mattress cover and on the chairs. The dust can easily be wiped off which is extremely concerning because that means they aren't wiped after each guest leaves. The shower head was caked in hard water calcification. The shower curtain smelled like mildew. It was honestly the dirtiest hotel room I have ever stayed in. I read through the yelp reviews after I booked unfortunately. They talk a lot about the cleanliness of the hotel and I was hoping it was an exaggeration but the room really was dirty. A hotel can be both outdated and clean. It has potential but needs quite a bit of work. The pipes are extremely loud in this establishment as well. Bring your own bedsheets because I'm pretty sure they don't change them. Go elsewhere please! You won't feel comfortable here trust me. Only thing going for this place is the epic location. read more

A little pricey for the quality and experience. Dated and tired hotel that gives off very strong "landlord special" vibes. Cabinets look like they've been repainted too many times, there's build up of dirt in the corners and stray hairs. The couches in the rooms are saggy and dirty. We put a sheet over ours just so we could sit on them. There was no rhyme or reason to the decor in the place. Just random dated art that's been slapped on the walls. No substance or symmetry which made it difficult for me to try and relax in the room. Luckily we had a great balcony and view but even that was ruined by a leak from the gutter above which caused a big puddle to form on the balcony. The windows and coverings in our room were really old. Everything just felt super dated with a few modern pieces but nothing really tied together on top of the room feeling dirty. The pool and jacuzzi are in two separate areas which was awkward because we had to run from one side of the property to the other to get to each. Not convenient at all. The best thing about this place is its location and the garden. read more

I complained in my survey after the stay. Still no response. We will not return to this or any other Pacifica property. read more

This one of the worst beach hotels I've ever stayed at in my life. The girl at the front desk has no personality; she couldn't even crack a smile. The rooms are basic, but the noise level is unbelievable. Rude people were noisy until 3::00 am. My husband and I never got any sleep. You pay a large sum for these basic rooms, but you at least want a decent night sleep. Then at 5:00 am, more noise. The television would stop working, which we told the girl at the front desk. She seems like she could care less. There are 2 bottles of water by the coffee maker that have a price tag of $5.00. I couldn't believe how small they were.in addition, there is no elevator, so if they put you on the 2nd floor, be prepared to haul all your luggage . This place is a joke. My husband and I cane here to relax, and we are leaving before we are supposed to because we are so disappointed. Second room had dirty bandaid and stained/dirty sheets so we had to ask for new/clean ones. Drawers had crumbs/bugs/dust in all. Paper/plastic tearing from bathroom walls. Bugs in the bedroom. Screen door didn't work and there was a bee on the inside part of our screen when we came in. My husband, Jeff and I and our geriatric pug Rosie had reservations for Saturday through Wednesday up to Thanksgiving to unwind and enjoy Moonstone Beach and Cambria. This was probably our 3rd or 4th visit to Moonstone Beach and we appreciate the chance, at certain times of year, to stay in a dog-friendly place without breaking the bank, as well as the ability to reserve an ADA equipped room. Unfortunately, there was a rather heavy rainstorm the night before we arrived that flooded three of the rooms in our building (and several other hotels nearby) and the day we arrived our ADA room was changed to another one three doors up. This wouldn't have been a problem except for the large fan and air purifier running 24 hours a day outside our door to dry out that part of the building. Needless to say, I went to the office to complain and ask for another room, knowing there probably wouldn't be a comparable room available. I can't speak highly enough of Doug, the manager and his assistant Carmen. They were wonderful and quickly arranged to move us to a SUITE for the rest of our stay at the same price as our ADA room. The Pelican Inn may not be the fanciest place on Moonstone Beach but its customer service is the best. Thank you Doug and Carmen! read more

We stayed here for two nights recently. We found the people working the front desk kind and welcoming. I loved all the gorgeous succulents surrounding the property. Our room was at the back and did not have any views, so that was disappointing, but it was large and the bed was comfortable. The carpet was filthy with stains but everything else was ok. For the price of the rooms, you would expect clean carpets. My husband jumped in their small pool and said it was really cold. The inn is located right across the street from the ocean so it was a perfect place to catch beautiful sunsets. And we could walk to a nearby restaurant but there is not much else in the area that is walkable. read more

We loved our stay. We had a king room 2nd floor with a ocean view. The bed was very comfortable and the pillows very nice. Loved the fire place. Room had a mini fridge and microwave and coffee maker. Room had an iron and ironing board. Two robes were hanging in the closet. Also the room had a small table and two chairs. And a nice bench seat at the window. They had a box fan in the room which was nice. The TV was big and had great reception. Internet seemed fast to me. No breakfast is offered. Carmen at the front desk was awesome! We used the hot tub but 90 degrees isn't hot enough. That's the only complaint we had. We didn't stay in it real long because it wasn't hot enough. We would definitely stay again. read more

The rooms were old and was not cleaned well. There were pieces of food on the floor and flies in the room when we checked in. There were small bottles of water avail for $5 each in the room (lol?). Double check your invoice and credit card statement. We did not prepay and were charged $25 extra for rooms when we checked out. When I called and asked about it, it was for incidentals. Incidentals when you checked out and you've already charged me extras? What? So speaking of extra charges, we were also charged a $75 pet fee (in additional to the $25 for incidentals). Problem is...we did not have a pet with us. When I called, the guy just said I can remove it, no apologies, nothing. My wife and I have just returned from a two-night stay at the Pelican Inn & Suites on Moonstone Beach Drive. Sadly, our experience was not a happy one. Before traveling, I accepted a $42 'upgrade' to have a bottle of wine and glasswear set up ready for us in our room upon arrival. (It was a special event - my wife's birthday.) But, when we arrived, we were told the wine we had selected wasn't available, but the Assistant General Manager, Sam Martino, suggested we select a different wine from the fridge in the lobby, which we did. But, he then also informed us Pelican does not provide glasswear at all. He said "there are plastic cups in the room." When we got to the room (a premium one - an ocean view king), the floor was sticky and visibly dirty. My wife went back to the lobby to complain, and she was told the floor would be mopped first thing the next day. It wasn't, at any time during our stay. The hand basin in the bathroom was cracked, and set in very dated yellow ceramic tiles on the counter top with broken/missing grout. The faucet on the basin was quite loose and rickety. All the windows in the unit were very misty and dirty, which entirely spoilt the view. Although the room was quite large, there was no rug or carpet, and no comfortable easy chair, for which there would have been ample room. The furnishings were very sparse and cheap. The closet doors and tracks were dirty, the window frames were dirty, the coffee counter was dirty and one of the coffee packs was sticky. Cheap two-ply facial tissue and one-ply toilet tissue was supplied, and in the bathroom, the paintwork on the door, doorframe and base molding was grubby and chipped. The tissue box holder was rusty, as was the bottom of the mirror frame. We were surprised that housekeeping did not make the bed on the next morning, and were told that housekeeping services are only provided for stays of three days or more. Considering we had paid for a premium room, this was far from a premium experience. We will never return to Pelican Inn & Suites again. read more

This is absolutely the nastiest hotel I have ever stayed at. When we arrived at our room and I saw the condition I was immediately grossed out. I don't think these rooms have ever been deep cleaned, they just make the beds and call it a day. I went to every neighbor hotel desperately seeking availability elsewhere and had no luck so we were forced to stay. I told the front desk we had no choice but to keep our room and asked if they could please send someone to clean in which they informed me they did not have any housekeepers but she could bring a Lysol wipes and a broom! I cannot believe I paid almost $600 to get on my hands and knees scrubbing someone else's pubes off of a disgusting bathroom floor and toilet. We come to Cambria every spring break and usually stay at Fireside but decided to stay this year at Pelican because the rooms offered a microwave and it was the biggest mistake of my life. Do yourself a favor and don't make the same mistake I did ignoring the endless honest reviews of disappointment and disgust about this hotel. read more

We just checked out 2 days early from room 314 and drove down to Pismo. Room was filthy. We asked 3 times to be provided with down free linen. On night 2, after saying they would change the linen in the morning, they didn't. Wife went to the front desk in the evening when we returned. They came in and put four pillows in bags on the floor and sheets on the counter. Did not take away our down linen. We told them the fireplace didn't work. They asked us if we would like them to fix the fireplace. (?!) (They didn't). Dead bugs on the ceiling. Ceiling fan didn't work and was covered in dust. Trash in the hallway for over 12 hours. There was a plastic 6 pack carrier under the trashcan. Stains all over the carpet. The patio and patio furniture were filthy and obviously not cleaned in months. Also, we were sold a king balcony room but were put on the first floor with a patio. A patio is not a balcony. I get that it's a dog friendly room, but we pay for that. They should use some of that $500+/night they charge for a room to clean the carpet. There is no housekeeping. Absolutely foul place. I stayed in far superior Motel 6s when I was traveling. Criminal to charge what they do. Upscale prices for roadside motel quality. Just wretched. I can't overstate this. read more

I am a travel journalist, often hosted at venues throughout the globe, but on a whim, decided to come to Cambria to escape the heat of Paso Robles. I did so on my own dime, which was no problem at all though happily covered other stories on this beautiful region. On arrival, I was told by a very friendly and helpful front desk staff that the room would likely be ready at 3pm. I called at 3:30 and reached the general manager who said that early check-in was only possible with an additional fee. I explained that the front desk hadn't mentioned that policy. Unfortunately, the manager was beyond rude and dismissive and though he eventually agreed to "waive the fee," he initially said that he had no choice but to adhere to policy. However, the gentleman who checked in before me was told the manager would "waive the fee" of having an additional adult in the three rooms they had booked for family and the early check-in. The front desk staff had also said that our king room had a partial ocean view, but the manager said that it was only possible for an additional fee. Here's the rub. The manager doesn't know the property. The assigned room did have a partial ocean view. When we couldn't figure out the system of working the fireplace, the manager told my husband there was a flat button on the wall. Not finding one, he called the front desk again and the manager said he'd have to contact maintenance as he didn't know where the switch was. I love Cambria, love staying on Moonstone Beach and have had so many amazing past experiences here. But the general manager here needs some serious training on the property and working with the public. Customer service is not his calling. read more

Took advantage of a discount they were offering and had a king room with an ocean view. The room was good size. The bathroom had a shower/bath with plenty of hot water as needed. Microwave, refrigerator and LG big screen TV. It's right on Moonstone Beach. Very close to town, and down the street from 2 of our favorite eateries, Sea Chest and Moonstone Grill. Highly recommend Sea Chest. Love the boardwalk that hugs the beach right across the street. Open your window at nights and hear the crashing waves put you to sleep. Got the keys to our first room. The bed was made, but the rest of the room was odd and dirty. There was trash in the trash cans, the tub looked like someone had washed a pet in it (muddy paw prints), there was someone's loose pills of Tylenol on the TV stand and a wet roll of toilet paper and kleenex box on the floor. We thought it was someone else's room, but there was no luggage and the bed was made. Now, if all that was cleaned, the walls were still scuffed up and the fixtures were old. It didn't match the photos on the internet. It was pretty rough and worn in for the price of these rooms. A fresh coat of paint is an extremely inexpensive repair. We ran into the front desk clerk in the hall, who immediately apologized for giving us the wrong room keys and said she'd be back with our correct room keys. She returned with the keys for the real room keys for the room down the hall. In the second room the toilet did not work, the walls were even more scuffed up (tellin' ya, one can of paint, pretty cheap at Home Depot), and it looked like someone slashed the drapes with a sword. We felt uncomfortable staying there after that point. I mean, what was the 3rd room going to look like? We went back to the front desk clerk and asked for a refund and to cancel our reservation. The reason I wanted to put 2 stars is that the front desk clerk really was doing her best to help us and seemed completely embarrassed by the condition of the two rooms. It wasn't her fault. She wasn't in charge of the repairs or how the budget was spent (or not spent, apparently). Kudos to her, but the place is terribly maintained and rooms are old and run down with old fixtures and scuffed up walls. For $350/night, it was a bit of false advertising. read more

Checked in for a three night stay, Toilet was running all night and all day shower backs up standing in your dirty water sliding glass door on the balcony is broken put your hand between the glass and the Frame of the door furniture dirty carpeting stained paint coming off stick holding the sink up lots of spiders and cobwebs even to the door of the room very disappointing for the price we paid do not recommend. read more

When you pay for an Oceanfront King room, you expect better quality. See photos. Staff communication was horrible. One said we could move the next morning to a better unit, and then the next morning, another person said, "Sorry, we don't have any availability for something comparable to your unit or better." Then "oh you booked through Expedia, we can't give you a nicer room." We offered to pay more! We were very disappointed, especially when we were staying for 4 nights. The bathroom towel rod fell off the morning we left. Perfect! Couldn't have been a worse start to our vacation. read more

Nice getaway on Moonstone Beach in Cambria. My family reserved a beautiful and spacious room that accommodated all 6 of us comfortably. It is an older building but seems to be well maintained and kept up considering their unforgiving marine weather. Parking was also a little tight if you do have a larger vehicle. Otherwise the location is superb and the workers seemed to be pleasant. Would stay here again. read more
