I had to take my car to Pellman's twice. The first time they charged me $100 (!?!) for an oil change among other repairs. The primary repair was the A/C system, which they recharged for ~$140. Well, a week later it wasn't working so I brought it back. The unfortunate part was that I was about to take a roadtrip the next day across Nevada so I needed A/C. This time they told me it was the compressor and would cost $640 to fix. When I pressed them about why it wasn't diagnosed properly the first time they gave me some bullshit about tracer dyes in the recharge fluid, but it just seems like they weren't very thorough. I needed my A/C so I pushed my trip back, and said to fix it. They said it would be done by 12 so I scheduled a ride to them by then. Turns out they didn't know what was going on because when I called they said it wouldn't be ready until late in the day. By then I had no way to get my vehicle. Overall they seemed overpriced, just taking advantage of the fact that most people are from Boulder, and really are poor communicators. I'd save yourself some hassle and some money and go elsewhere. read more

I took my car here twice. The first staffer was really nice & made sure I got a ride back to work & they quickly fixed an electrical problem for a reasonable price. The second time it was stranded in a snow drift with a frozen battery & I went ahead and had it towed. I felt they over-charged me & were condescending (testing the old battery even though I said I wanted it just taken out & disposed, then charging me--O'Reilly checks it for free). Over-charged on the oil change. Tried a hard-sell on the timing belt even though I asked them twice to look at the power steering leak before I budgeted that. (Power steering leak never got diagnosed or fixed because they were hell-bent on doing the timing belt & didn't address my immediate concern). They tried to tell me it was ruined when it was approaching time for scheduled maintenance. All in all they're fine, clean shop, reasonable quality, fast enough. I didn't appreciate the extra charges and pushy sales attitude. Still can't find a good mechanic in Boulder. read more

I had a car towed to their shop for repair. They estimated the timing belt etc. repair cost at $1,600. They provided me with a picture of an out of sync timing belt. I crossed checked with Louisville Tire and Auto and they could do it for $1,200. I towed the car to their shop but when they diagnosed the problem they found a sticker indicating the timing belts were changed 22k ago. I called the prior owner of the car and he confirmed. They found the real problem and fixed the car for $105. I'm leaving a lot out of this story but check the other one star reviews. It isn't that this place does bad work or is over priced. Its that they are looking to con their customers by charging for work that they didn't do. read more

Called Pellman's on my way to work (was referred to them by a trusted friend) and was able to drop the car there by 9:00 am. Was quoted at a reasonable $500 for the work that was to be performed and told that (thank God) I'd be able to pick it up by the end of the day. Drove out of there by 4:30 pm for $65 less than quote - they had further investigated AFTER having quoted me and were able to locate a better deal on parts. That I call a trip to a mechanic a pleasant experience makes me wonder if I'm living in the twilight zone - I can now say that I've "got" a mechanic. read more

I trusted the diagnostics and thought maybe I can save some money by bringing my car somewhere besides the dealership for the repair. I brought it in to Pellman's and to my surprise they told me that they did their in diagnostics and didn't see anything that would indicate I need any of this huge engine work done. They did a simple valve adjustment and my car was running like a champ. These people are unrealistically trustworthy and they do business right. No cheating or making an easy buck. Too many shops look for ways to sell you more, invent problems, etc... They'll almost always tell you what's going on, what the risks are and give you the information to help make an informed decision. I worked as a mechanic for about a year, so I'm fairly picky about where I'll take my vehicles, and I also know just enough to be a tough customer to deal with. Pellman's is absolutely the best shop I've ever dealt with - dealership level service without the nonsense. 1. Consistently excellent customer service. The folks behind the counter know what they're talking about, and are happy to explain things to your level of knowledge. They'll talk you through options, but leave the decision making up to you. More than once I've called about a potential vehicle issue, and had them diagnose the issue over the phone or determine that there's not an issue in the first place. I have to give a shout-out to Dan here, he's the first service rep I met at Pellman's and he's great. 2. Skilled mechanics. I've had a variety of work done here and have never had an issue with anything. These folks are definitely pros. I've owned a variety of vehicles, including some pretty beat-up old trucks that are definitely a challenge to work on. They can get in & get out on a tricky repair without taking too much time or causing other issues. 3. Overall good feeling. I walk in here, or call, and people just seem to be happy. I don't know everyone by name, but I feel like I see a lot of the same folks behind the counter every time I'm there. They renovated their waiting area a few years ago and it's pretty comfortable. They have loaner bicycles and offer drop-off service as necessary. 4. Value. There are a lot of good mechanics out there, but we've all heard stories about shops that over-charge and under-deliver. When I get a bill at Pellman's, I know it's legit. There may be cheaper shops out there, but good mechanics and consistent results are worth it. read more

I have had two experiences with Pellman's. The first was good, the second bad. In The first case they did a brake job and noted that my U-joint was getting bad, which I already knew to be true. I went for their full service and all was well. The second experience is related to a simple oil change. I came home and over a couple weeks noticed a consistent drip of oil which I had never had before on my truck. I took a good look at it and figured out it was coming from the drain plug, but when I brought it in they said it was from a rusted through oil pan and that it needed replacement, which was not their fault. I actually had to take off work, walk in to their shop, and call them out on being wrong while standing under the oil pan. They said they'd do a dye test to check again (probably wasn't needed) and ultimately admitted that they installed the drain plug wrong. I got a fresh batch of oil and no extra charge, but never compensation for the lies and the stress this caused. read more

I am just starting out in business and my budgets are tight. My pick up truck is older with 200,000 miles on it. However, it is my bread and butter and without it I am out of business. While Pellman's costs a little more than other shops, they have kept me going over the years. With my small budgets I appreciate they only fix what I need fixed and work with me to keep me on the road. I also know that its done right, even more important when you are talking 200,000 miles on a pick up truck that does as much hard work as me. read more

Pellman's has worked on my Acura MDX and Lexus RX 450h. They are much more affordable than the dealers. Some of the fluids that the dealer said need automatic replacement, Pellman's checked and told me that replacement wasn't necessary, at this time. They are friendly, efficient and knowledgeable. I highly recommend that you do NOT bring your car to this garage. I did a lot of research on shops & decided to bring my car to them. Boy that was a huge mistake on my part.They "fixed" my car, but after driving it for less than 10 miles the Service Engine Light stared blinking, Before that I could tell it wasn't running properly. When I called them they told me to bring it back in, They didn't listen to what I was telling them, they jumped the gun & went for a 3,000.00 fix instead of a manning up & saying they did the job wrong in the first place. And on top of that, they told me it was driving fine... Ummm no it's not, I know it's my car. .. I wish there could one honest mechanic out there. I would think they would want repeat business instead of jerking people out of a lot of money & never seeing them again! It makes me wonder how they can sleep at night knowing they are screwing people over so badly! In my opinion that's no way to run a business, any business! read more

I had a really bad experience with Pellman's. Initially they seemed great, but things quickly turned south. They contacted me after my original rather scathing review I wrote a few months after deciding never to return. They wanted to try and amend things and make up for mistakes/errors made. We found this place by using Yelp and have been very pleased with the service and repairs from Pellman's. We had our engine replaced using an extended warranty. We own Route 66 warranty purchased from our credit union and have been very pleased with our warranty as well. Dan at Pellman's was extremely helpful with our repairs and communication. The engine was replaced within a week and the eninge had to be shipped in from out of state. Our vehicle is also a hybrid Highlander so it is a very complicated machine. read more

This auto repair place looks really, really fancy but they are totally inept. My car was leaking coolant onto my driveway and my car started overheating. I left it at Pellman's and they called to tell me it needed a new radiator. This seemed nuts to me because my water level was never low. I also left a quart of oil in the car because I believed it was low. When I picked up the car it no longer had the quart of oil. I'm sure the mechanic did not tell them it was low on oil. Hummm.... Since my car overheated quickly i trusted them and let them replace the radiator. That cost me almost $1,000. I brought it home and it continued to leak coolant. I could SEE the dripping connection and so should they have. They insisted that it was necessary to replace the radiator. I then showed them the obvious leaking connection when I brought my car in again it cost me almost $700 which seems excessive for a connector. I asked to see the old radiator when I returned again to pick up my car. and it did not look in bad shape. I wish I had taken it with me to show Cyote Motors who is my regular mechanic. He has always been fair and accurate with repairing and maintaining my cars. If i had the radiator I would have taken PELLMAN to small claims court. Also I have had 4 Subaru and never had to replace a radiator at 150K. Wolfgang also told me that it's a very strange thing to have a radiator fail. In my mind they should admit their mistake and reimburse me for the radiator and fire they "mechanic" who diagnosed my car's problem. DO NOT EVER TAKE YOUR CAR TO PELLMAN'S. read more

Been living in Boulder for 15 years and have finally found an auto repair shop that does what it advertises. Namely maintain and repair my cars as needed. This is family owned business who are active within the community. Their reputation means a lot to them so they tend to err in favor of the customer. I have taken my Pacifica there for 2 years now on regular maintenance issues and one repair problem. Fair price with quality work with outstanding customer support. I HATE this place. I do not recommend them to ANYONE. Other than the nice lady at the front desk, I disagree with how they use and abuse their customers. They cheat you out of your money. I went in there to get an oil change for $45.00. I asked them to LOOK at my car because it was having issues with the vent temperature as well as my driver's side lock would not lock electrically, only manually. I received a phone call with the "preliminary diagnosis" which totaled up to $1,000.00. I told them I wanted to get a second opinion and not to do anything to it other than change the oil. They say their technicians are the best - then why do they charge just to LOOK at my car. I just picked it up and it cost $100... for an oil change and for the 30 minutes spent "looking" at my car0- which he would've done EITHER way. GREEN GARAGE does not charge just to LOOK at your car...they do free inspections!!! Neither my boyfriend nor I are every going back to Pellman's. We are going to continue using GREEN GARAGE because they are HONEST and treat their customers with respect vs cheating people out of their money. Thanks for NOTHING Pellman's!!!!!!!! read more

These guys were awesome! We were in Boulder from North Dakota when our brakes started squealing. We called around 8:30a, dropped the car off around 9:30 and they had found the problem and replaced the back brakes by 2p. I don't know how comparable they are on price in the area, but their service is worth it. They texted us pictures of the issue they found during the complimentary inspection. And they had free loaner bikes and lock. At least if we end up moving here, we won't have to search for a garage! read more

I am an Electronics Engineer from Silicon Valley, CA who has moved to Boulder, CO. Thus far, I have no network, family or friends in Boulder, CO. I will personally vouch for the honesty, competency and integrity of the staff at Pellman's Automotive Service. They were able to trace an extremely subtle "grounding issue" between the engine block/starter and the ground of the vehicle body itself. This issue created a ..."now you see it, now you don't" constraint on anybody attempting to troubleshoot the problem. If any of you have ever attempted to self-diagnose an electronics problem of this nature you know that this is anything but easy. They also correctly identified several other critical issues that had evolved as a result of the prior owner of the vehicle doing nothing in the way of any form of reasonable and necessary maintenance. All of their diagnostics was necessary, correct and very important for proper function of the vehicle. As I am new to Boulder, I am also extremely cost-conscious. My car is a Nissan with a 3.5 liter engine for power. As an Electronics Engineer, I do not give out a 5-star recommendation for any business in a casual manner. As a customer, if I thought I was dealing with dishonesty or incompetence this review would be nothing short of scathing in nature. I wish to personally thank all of the staff at Pellman's for their honesty, competency and fairness in monetary cost and delivery time. Absolute lifesavers! My car had a major engine block mount issue while I was traveling in Colorado. They were incredibly helpful. They performed an examination of the issue and then let me now the cost of the expected course of action, as well as what the other options were, their cost and what would be any costs should things not go as planned. As expected with a car repair, something didn't go as planned, but they went above and beyond to fix it... plus, they came right out and told me that extra effort was less work than they initially estimated... and they reduced the price down... Honesty unheard of at an auto repair shop!!! When I decided to sell my car and buy a new one to return to California with... they even gave me pointers!! I really wish they were in my area back home... I would never go elsewhere. Never thought it would be an auto shop that would restore my faith in customer service and HUMANITY! Bravo! read more

Pellman's is that thing that everyone who isn't willing or able to work on their own car needs to find: an honest, skilled, and easy to deal with mechanic. I highly recommend Pellman's. My wife was using them before we met, and since we've been together, I've found Pellman's to consistently and quickly diagnose any problems, clearly explain what they find and what they recommend, and work with me to figure out the best solution for me. Just the most recent example, they waived a diagnostic fee for figuring out an ignition coil failure while I was out of town because the manager (taking my word for it) didn't explain to me the last time we were in that we should consider replacing all the coils after the first one failed. I trust these guys, and you can't put a price on that. I do some of my own auto maintenance, but for anything I can't or don't have the time to do, Pellman's is my go-to mechanic in Boulder. read more
