This place is a local institution, so I was told, and I understand why. Quirky but friendly ambience and staff, excellent Russian dumplings, good prices, and an open til late kitchen all make Pel'meni a winner. The menu has two items, beef dumplings or potato dumplings. Both are served with curry, a splash of Sriracha, butter, and cilantro, plus sour cream on the side and a slice of bread. I had the potato dumplings and they were uniquely flavorful from the various seasoning and spices. I liked the dumplings even more when I dipped them in sour cream. Super tasty and a good portion, this is comfort food that works for post-bar late nights or just a regular ol' time. The record player in the background plays classics, Neil Diamond when I arrived, and after his album ended the staff asked me to pick an album from the vinyl library. I wanted Abba but could only find the album cover. The dumplings are good and consistent but the prices are skyrocketing. It's now $10 for a small order or regular potato dumplings. They are fluffy, creamy, and cooked just right. They offer a variety of toppings but in short everything considered it doesn't justify the prices. read more

Great hot comfort food for a rainy day. Walk right up and place your order there are only 2 options. Meat or vegi! Get your grub and add some extra spice or mix in the sour cream. I added 3 sour cream it is a must. pop is like $1 and the food is $6. Very reasonably prices. Take your fist bite into and epic fusion of flavors and spice. Bite size meat covered in pastry boiled to prefection add a half cup of butter and curry spice then sriracha and celantro, top with a fresh slice of pastrami bread and enjoy. Wow this was a great meal and a great deal. Really cool atmosphere. Small well lite cave filled with boiling pots of goodness and a wall of records! What a fun place to warm up after a hike and down some comfort food! I will be back again when in Juneau, this place is a must! read more

Walked into a heavy smell of curry but i wasnt going to let that stop me from trying this spot. My sister has been raving about this spot. She eats this ALL the time and apparently its "the spot." They only sell 2 types, meat or potatoe. We had the meat. It was good. You couldnt even taste the curry. At least it didnt taste like strong curry. These little dumplings are good and hit the spot. You have several topping options, including rice vinegar, sriracha, and sour cream - a delicious and spicy combo The storefront itself is unassuming with no decorations and small tables with stiff chairs. Anytime I've walked past, a variety of eclectic music is blasting from within. The ambiance leaves a lot to be desired, as does the service. We found this spot on yelp and decided to give it a try, it was also the only thing open! Great spot. This place hit the spot. The pelmeni were cooked well and had the required sour cream. What the heck is a pel'meni??? Apparently its a Russian dumpling they serve at a hole-in-the-wall in Juneau. Son really wanted to try them so off we went. It was around 4 so more of an afternoon snack. Ordered 2 beef and 1 potato. Dude cooks em up and serves them in a little syrofoam container. The have some curry powder and mystery sauce that was real good. You eat it with sour cream. Super yummy and hit the spot on a cold & rainy Juneau day. So good, we went back the next day for more. Unfortunately, I would have to say this spot didn't match my high expectations. There's great potential with the product and concept yet the space and delivery of the food left room for improvement. From a tourist perspective, with a little tweaking, this place could be a Juneau "must visit". Meat or potato. I had the meat. A little spicy and even more so if you add sriracha. They have rice vinegar which is a nice accent. They are topped with cilantro.
