We came here after hearing from several people that Tracy's King Crab Shack was more of a tourist trap, so we decided to give Hangar on the Wharf a try--and we're glad we did. We ordered 1 lb of king crab, the halibut fish tacos, and I paired my meal with an Alaskan Amber beer. Everything we came for was excellent. The king crab was fresh, sweet, and cooked perfectly. The halibut tacos were flavorful, with generous portions of fish, and the Alaskan Amber was the perfect local beer to go with the meal. The beans and rice that came with the tacos, however, were just okay. I didn't have high expectations for the sides, and they were pretty forgettable compared to the quality of the seafood. One thing that surprised us was how busy the restaurant was. It's a bit of a walk down the wharf, so I expected smaller crowds, but the place was packed. Despite arriving around 8:40 p.m., well past the peak dinner rush, we were seated without any issues. Even though they were still serving a full restaurant with other parties waiting, we never felt rushed, which we really appreciated. I went to The Hangar on the Wharf twice during my stay. They sat us down relatively quickly. The scenery is beautiful. Service was fine. I think a couple people here hyped the food up too much for me. I also think I chose the wrong meals. The first night we ordered bbq chicken wings. They were cooked well by the sauce was terrible. It tasted more like ketchup than bbq. I'm just being honest. The Idaho fries were big and cheesy. They different and good. The edamame was a bit salty but they were really good. 8/10 for sure. We ate them all. The second time we went my wife had the steak tip Ceasar salad and it was good. It hit the spot. I had the salmon and clam chowder sourdough bowl combo. The Ceasar salad was good. The chowder tasted good also. My disappointment was that it hardly had any clams or salmon in it. That was odd to me, especially given the price. We came during lunch time. It was busy but we were seated right away. Our server Christy was super pleasant and checked in our table regularly. The restaurant has amazing views to the wharf. We were able to see the seaplanes land and take off. We ordered the tempura halibut & chips $34.99 and BBQ Burger Dip $24.99. The menu offers a variety of food items: burgers, steaks, pastas, soups/salads, local seafood dishes and a list of favorite dishes (jambalaya, shrimp tacos, ginger ahi, halibut wraps and more). If you pay with cash the 3% convenience fee will be removed. The portions for the halibut and chips were large and it was enough for two people. Me and my wife got here in the mid afternoon and they were fairly busy. Hostess said it'd just be a minute for her to get a table ready so we stepped to the side as other guests were arriving behind us. She then sat the very next party of 4 people without hesitation. This seemed very odd so when she came back to the host stand and greeted the next party we excused ourselves in front of the line and asked her if we'd be seated and she acted like we had never spoken to her. This was very strange but she sat us next to a window with a great view of the wharf where sea planes take off so we got to watch those while we ate. The server also took a long time to come to our table or even greet us to say he was busy and would be with us shortly, (it was about 10 minutes with us not even knowing if a waiter was assigned to our table). We shared the nachos and my wife ordered a Dr. Pepper which she said tasted so off that she wouldn't drink it. I tasted it and it tasted like cleaning solution wasn't properly rinsed out of the cup. She didn't want me to ask to send the drink back so we just didn't drink it. The nachos were pretty good though. Looking to try out Alaskan crab legs and tik tok and Yelp led me here. We dropped in extremely late like 840pm and they advised it would be a 15-20min wait. We were seated in maybe 5mins. It took about 15 mins to get a server though. She took our drink orders and disappeared for another 15/20 mins tyen came back with drinks and took our orders. The food took about 20mins to come out. Everything was extremely fresh and hot, except 1 of my very expensive crablegs! It was over cooked and I fought like hell to get the crab meat out. How disappointing, HUGE SIGH. We ate here while in town for a day from a cruise. I was strictly wanting to try the Alaskan King Crab while in Juneau and we decided on The Hanger instead of Tracy's because my husband does not eat sea food (I know, why did I even marry him? jk). Our experience was just okay. There was a huge wait because all the ships were docked, which was no surprise. They said the beeper would work anywhere in the building and the wait was 45 minutes so we went to their sister place in the building to have a beer. We came back about 35 minutes into our wait and waited again. When we finally check they said they had been looking for us, but our beeper never went off. So I do not advise going somewhere else in the building with the pager. They sat us in a table right in front of the patio door so we were blasted with cold wind over and over again. Kind of feel like they could have put us in a better spot since the pager thing is technically their fault. But our server was nice, and got our order to us correctly. The king crab was $110 per lb, which seemed to be the standard. The chowder was also good. The restaurant sits right on the water so you can see the float planes land and take off, which was fun. Overall, it is a decent place with a variety on the menu, and good location. But be prepared to wait a long time on cruise docking days. read more

The views here were phenomenal from the dining area, and the food was also good! The Hangar on the Wharf is rightly named since there will be small planes landing in plain view from the windows. I came by off the cruise ships, it was towards the end of the season (September) so it was extra cold and cloudy (end of season for the northern lights viewing). The clam chowder was absolutely delicious; it was meaty, and just the perfect thickness I like. There were chunks of fish and clams in every bite. I also got fresh oysters and they were nice and meaty with a touch of brine and had a nice bite. The service was a bit slow since people were being sat in droves, but once the server came around, she was very nice. We had a few questions and she answered them with a smile and gave me some awesome tips. Overall, a satisfying meal with an awesome view; I would recommend. read more

It was the best seafood chowder I ever had; it came with delicious sourdough bread. I also had the wasabi salmon burger. It was not ground salmon, but a real salmon filet. It came with steak fries. Came in for a late lunch and the restaurant was absolutely slammed since everyone was trying to escape the rain. But despite the craziness and how busy it was the service and food was amazing. We got sat at the high tops by the bar and our server Chino was on top on it all despite how busy it was. They had a great beer selection and both of the IPAs I tried were great. My friend said her tequila sunrise cocktail was strong and good as well. We can be quite picky when it comes to chowder but they really have one of their chowder of the day was one of the best chowders we've tried on this trip. Alaskan king crab was good as well, but nothing special. We just got it out of obligation since we're in Alaska. On a recent visit to Juneau, we had the pleasure of having a Friday lunch at The Hanger On The Wharf. After we checked in, we had to wait about 20 minutes to get a table because the place was packed. We told our server that we were in a bit of a hurry and we had to be somewhere by 1:15 and she assured us that we would make our deadline (we did make it with time to spare). Three of us ordered the fish chowder, and we also had a bowl of sourdough bread, deep-fried, portobello mushrooms, loaded nachos, and salmon spread with pita. The fish chowder broth was creamy, very flavorful, and seasoned just right. I've had chowder and bisque where saltiness was the most salient taste. This chowder was well balanced and excellent. The portobello mushrooms were tasty--a very crunchy, flavorful coating with a moist center. The bread was good--a nice crust and soft center. We also recommend the salmon spread. We shared and devoured the well constructed nachos. They had plenty of melted cheese, seasoned beef, guacamole, salsa, and sour cream. Our server was pleasant. Buyer Beware! Junk fees are so 2020. I'm in Juneau, Alaska on a long-term work assignment, and due to the limited restaurant options, I've ended up eating at The Hangar on the Wharf several weeks in a row. Every single time, they tack on a 3-5% "convenience" or "service" fee to the bill -- even when sitting at the bar with average service at best. I've asked ownership multiple times to remove these outdated junk fees and simply price the menu honestly instead of sneaking extra charges onto the check. Many states are now passing laws to prohibit businesses from randomly adding surprise fees to customer bills because consumers are tired of deceptive pricing practices. All this does is hurt employees' tip opportunities and frustrate customers. The food and service simply are not good enough to justify hidden surcharges on top of already high prices. This was a wonderful place to stop in. It's a few minutes walk from the downtown area and you can make it quicker by taking the boardwalk. You go through a few shops to get to the restaurant which was nice to stop in and see them. They also have a pool table upstairs and you can pay for the balls and play a few rounds. We came at a perfect time because there was seating and space at the bar which was great! Our cocktails were wonderful and our server was quick and checked on us often. We weren't super hungry but did really enjoy the sourdough bread and Kind Crab legs. The Crab Legs were huge, warm, and cooked perfectly. Honestly the best Kind Crab I've had and at a great price! We (myself, wife and son) arrived here around 7:00pm on 6/11 from a cruise visit. We were seated right away and a tall brunette lady came by to bring us waters. She came back to take our order and we ordered; 2 glasses of Chardonnay, Basket of bread, calamari, steamer clams, halibut fish and chips, chowder of the day and 1lb of their famous crab. I took my son outside to the back patio where we watched the planes come in. I kid you not... 20+ minutes go by and no drinks or even bread came to the table. She seemed more into hugging other patrons and doing anything but even checking in on us. Seemed like it was maybe her last day or should have been. How do you fuck up service THIS bad.
