Don't understand the negative reviews for this place. Its a basic auto repair shop. A local Mom & Pop type outfit run by an honest guy trying to make a living as a small business owner. He understands the basic principal of running a local business - takes care of your customers and they will keep coming back. I've been taking my cars here since I moved to Fairfield in 2001 and I tell anyone who is looking for a good mechanic that he "gets it". As soon as any factory warranty or dealer covered service has expired, all of my vehicles go to Bob from oil changes to brakes to Manufacturer's Scheduled Maintenance Services (which are a fraction of what the dealer charges for the same services). Hell froze over... I found an honest mechanic. I know, I know, I can't believe it either. So check this out... About a month ago our car battery died. We called AAA to give us a jump, and they ended up telling us the battery was pretty much shot, we needed a new one. They hooked up the new battery, and when they turned the car on, no radio. Just dead silence. There was power coming into the head unit, everything appeared to work, there was just no sound coming out to the speakers. By this point, the AAA guy had left. Great, now what. We called AAA back, they sent another guy out who couldn't figure it out either. It was a fiasco. So we filed a claim with AAA. AAA tells us to take it to a car audio place to get a diagnostic done and submit the claim (but no guarantee they would cover the costs). So we know they're pretty much going to find a way to blame us, and any event, we prepped to be paying out of pocket. We took it to 2 audio places, and they both concluded it was a blown amp... something about when they connected the battery, it blew the amp. Anyway, estimate averaged about $600. $600, and no guarantee that we'd be reimbursed... really sucks. So about a month later we come across Penfields. My wife decides "what the hell, we got nothing to lose". Enter Bob. Bob says "I don't think it's your amp." What's that Bob? Do tell... Bob thinks it's a problem when they connected the battery, and wants to "reboot" the radio. He disconnects the battery, reconnects it, turns the car on with a reset to the radio and POOF, radio works. Best part is, Bob tells my wife "you don't owe me anything... I'm just here to help people". My father always used to say "Son, there's only 2 people that any man can't live without.... A good tailor, and an good, honest auto mechanic." I'm still looking for my tailor, but at least I found Bob. read more

You'd never know if from looking at the unfiltered reviews on this page, but Penfield Service has a solid reputation and plenty of very satisfied customers. I should know because I recently switched to Penfield based on strong word of mouth recommendations from a wide variety of trusted local friends and business associates. Owner Bob Trez has a direct, tell-it-like-it-is approach that might be off-putting to some people, but it's one that I found to be both refreshing and candid. Knowing ahead of time that my aging Subaru was in need of more than just a simple tune-up and oil change, I brought it in with the simple request that they perform the "essential" safety-related work and nothing more (I already had some idea of what that would entail). Because I plan on upgrading to a newer car within the next few months I wasn't keen on putting any more money than I have to into the Subaru now. When it came time to pick up the car, Bob explained to me in detail what they did, what they didn't do, and how long I could expect to continue safely driving the car before I'd have to address the outstanding repair issues. The price was right in line with what I was quoted and expected to pay. No surprises! Based on that experience alone I'll continue to use and recommend these guys. read more

Once again, I return to look at the Penfield ratings and all of the 5 star and more recent reviews have been "filtered". Yelp, wtf, seriously. We started going to Penfield about 5 years ago, before Yelp filtered out all good reviews. At that time they were at around a 4-star rating. I don't think I've ever been ripped off here and the guys are always nice. Their quotes have been very close to the final price, and we've come for oil changes, other "rattles" with our pickup truck, and it's currently in for 70K service now. I had a great experience here! I needed an exhaust pipe fixed and a previous place I brought my 98 civic to told me I would have to replace the cats. The place in Danbury quoted me $1,000!! My good friend recommended Penfield and he didn't steer me wrong. Not only was Paul friendly and understanding, but he was honest and straightforward with what my car needed. It didn't need a new cat as the previous place said, and the repair was just a new pipe that was less then a third of the cost of what I was quoted in Danbury. Paul and the guys also fit me right in for the day and got the job done in a timely fashion:) My car is running great and I couldn't be happier! These crackerjacks can't even properly mount snow tires..you would think paying $100 and they would get it right....sigh.. I've taken two cars to be repaired there (a couple of times). They do go good work and their prices are reasonable. They complete the work in a timely fashion. They do try to oversell a little (like saying you need new tires when maybe you don't) but I'm not overly concerned about that -- just be aware of that. I took off one star because they scratched up my alloy wheels when replacing the summer with winter wheels. I would have liked to see a little more care. read more

I had an extended warranty contract for my car. This place change the price so many times because the insurance company knew they were trying to rip them off. And penfield was juggling around and negotiating the amount of deductible I was going to have to pay for the job. Oh, by the way, my car was already in pieces and some exorbitant diagnosis charge was due so I was on the hook for some big deductible on a nearly $1800 job. So, after all was said and done, when I returned penfield wanted $200 more than was due the or they would not release my car. I of course had to pay. When I got home I immediately disputed the charge.after their appeal the credit card company sided with me. So good luck. read more

I give one star since I was able to get service right away. However, I was first told a price on the phone that I agreed to and when I came there I was given a higher Another price. It does not help to argue as I was indicated that I was the wrong party even though I was told differently. I did indicate I got a coupon so when I came back to pay they jacked up the price even higher so with my coupon the ending result did not matter much. read more

Our car wouldn't start Tuesday morning so we got it towed to Penfield on AAA's recommendation. They called me a couple hours later to tell me the engine was dead due to low pressure in one cylinder and my choices were to replace the engine with a used engine for $6k, spend $4k to try to fix the existing engine, or bring them the title and they would take the car and waive the $129 diagnosis fee (they said they would then refurbish and resell the car). They could not provide me any more detail about what was wrong with the car. We had the car towed to the dealership for a second opinion. The dealership diagnosed and repaired a vacuum leak for $145, and didn't charge a diagnosis fee. Husband drove it home today and it's running great. Glad we got a second opinion. read more

I live in Fairfield and I actually went to Penfield for several years--mostly oil changes. I let them rip me off once for a battery even though I knew it was way over priced. I figured it was worth the convenience of them being nearby. No more. When I needed a serious maintenance performed I asked them for a quote and it was just about double what I ultimately paid elsewhere for good quality work. The owner Bob pretends to be nice, but he really isn't. I learned no one there is trustworthy. I will never go back there again. Big time ripoff. read more

Rip-off. I took my car here when I was attending Fairfield University after my engine light came on one morning. They completely took advantage of the fact that I was a young female college student who didn't know much about cars and charged me an asinine amount of money to "repair" the problem; well as I was driving away from the Service Center, my engine light came back on!! I brought it home to the dealership where I originally purchased the car and they told me that Penfield had done more harm than good! The dealership then fixed the problem for about a quarter of what Penfield had charged me. I learned the hard way. Stay far away! read more

Awful, just awful. Seems each negative reviewer is attacked...should tell everyone something. I can't wait to see how I am attacked for simply sharing my story. How about $335+ to repair a cig lighter power outlet? They called ahead of time to tell me they'd have to take off the console to get at the cig lighter wires. Having done it myself previously (a 10 minute job at most), I said "sure, go ahead". Took them 2 1/2 hours (supposedly) at $129/hour to "solder wires". The good news...they said, "we didn't charge you for the new wires". Wow, what a break! First (and last) time there. I'm going to be sure everyone I know in Fairfield (and hundreds more I don't know) are aware of this experience/POV. I am SO angry!!! read more

In a world where people love to complain it's nice to say something positive for a change, give credit where credit is due. My car was making a lot of noise in the front end, which sounded terrible. I called and he told me to bring it right in. I was freaked out and he said not to worry, that he would take care of it. Long story short, a leaf got stuck in the vent and the blower was causing it to make a noise, thank god! In just a few minutes, he had me fixed and on my way to work. Thank you so much! This was an awesome experience. After needing to use jumper cables to get my car started, I suspected I had a battery issue. AAA suggested Tia service center based on the zip code I gave them. Mike answered the phone and was very friendly and reassured me they could assess the problem. Within 30 minutes, the very capable team there determined my battery was shot and out in a new one. It could not have been a better experience. They were professional, fast and reasonably-priced. The guys at Penfield Service in Fairfield were great to deal with on a recent exhaust repair/replace. I am in Iowa, my Daughter a recent transfer to the Fairfield CT area had developed an exhaust leak and was getting exhaust fumes into the car. I called and talked to the owner on Wednesday, had her take the car in for an estimate early Thursday morning. The estimate was fair and they could get the parts and repair it right then, and she could still make it to work on time. Their customer service is greatly appreciated. I can't attest to the work quality of this place but I can attest that if you know nothing about cars and/or look like you know nothing about cars, they will try to fix things you don't need fixed. I called the service about squeaking breaks, high pitched noise on acceleration at low RPMs, and clunking sound and came in for a check up. I was told that my rotors and my drive belt need to be changed. While waiting, I called my mom and my cousin to see if the price they wanted to charge me was fair- it was (it was also something I could not quite afford that day). Yet, they stated that I should get my car out of there for a second opinion because it didn't sound right that my rotors or belt needed changing. When I told them that I wanted to leave, they said they will let me but gave me a nice long lecture that I was putting them out since they already ordered the parts for me (that's fair). Got a second opinion the same day and I have never felt more stupid in my entire life. My drive belt was as good as new and its tension was perfect - when drive belt goes bad, its inner ridges begin to degrade. And my rotors were still very good - changing them would not have resolved the break squeak. One can see when rotors go bad - they form ridges that you can feel with your hand (make sure your car is cooled off before touching). What I really needed to was change my break pads (cheap and fast) - the reason that breaks squeak is because when the break pads wear down, a metal bar grinds on the rotor to indicate that it is time to change the break pad. I have yet to check the other problems my car is having. And for brownie points for my visit, I truly hope that they did not see a loose bolt on one of my rotors when they were checking them, because leaving it there without telling me about it is just spiteful. TLDR; Would this service to anything to damage my car? No. Would they fix the issues I was having? No. Would they hurt my wallet by doing unnecessary service? Yes. read more

A HUGE THANKS to Bob and the crew at Penfield Service! Around 9:30 this morning while it was raining my car stalled out, the alternator light came on and I could not steer. The power steering had stopped working . After restarting the car it was chugging and would not stay on. There was no power steering! I called Penfield and Bob asked where I was located. Bob and a mechanic showed up to get me and drive my car back to the station. I do a lot of driving for my business and need to see my clients in a timely fashion. Since I have found Penfield Service I do not need to go anywhere else for car servicing. The customer service is top shelf. This is a great place to get your vehicle fixed. They do great work and they are always friendly and easy to deal with. Ive had a lot of work done over the last couple of months on all three of my vehicles and the only thing i can say is that the work got done . Done right , priced fair and done when they said it would be done . With that said i highly recommend these guys . O and heres one that would never happen at a dealership i called the owner the other day in regards to getting a keyless remote added to my truck alarm cause i lost one , not only did he tell me to bring it down right then and there when i got there they jumed right on it and heres the kicker the guy tossed me my remote working and said have a nice day this ones on me . Everyone else wanted an appointment and 80 to 100 buck just to learn the unit in. Side note i dont know if they sell the remotes there. I got mine online but they did install it for me . This place specializes in scamming customers. I brought my vehicle in for service here a few weeks ago after my check engine light flashed on. I was told by an oil change attendant at a Valvoline that it was nothing to worry about but wanted to get some peace of mind from an expert. Instead, I was told that the 'minor issue' was actually a series of extremely serious problems with my car. I won't bother with the long litany of repairs that they told me were incredibly urgent but I will volunteer that the total price tag was an impressive $1500 (including a warning that if I drove my car more than a few more miles I would cause an irreversible amount of costly damage). After suffering from a bit of sticker shock, I reappraised the situation and took my car to SKF Auto in New Haven (after reading their glowing yelp reviews) to get a second opinion--despite the hyperbolic warnings from Penfield that I would melt my car into a puddle of hydrocarbons if I drove it much further. You all know how this story is going to end. SKF Auto told me that there was absolutely nothing wrong with my car's engine other than a minor quibble with the evap system that causes no damage/no performance issues. Further, they actually diagnosed a serious issue with my car (a fail in my anti-lock breaks) that Penfield had missed (or maybe had not told me about because this part can only be serviced by a dealer). Regardless, let my cautionary tale be a warning to the rest of you. Do not go here. They will lie to you while grinning as wide as the Cheshire cat. read more

A very Rare Find and Experience that was Second to None !!!!!!! This is repair shop is a special place run in the most professional manor .. their only purpose is to provide excellent customer service and expert repair to your auto. I was on my way to Va. from Ma. when my check engine light came on on route 95 in Fairfield Ct .. I drive a late model Mercedes Benz V8 which at time requires special care .. I immediately pulled into the rest stop in Fairfield Ct. and called MB which could not get to me for hrs .. I than called AAA and they recommended Penfield Service Center .. I called and spoke to Robert Trez Pennfields owner and Manager .. he offer to tow the car in and take a look at it .. since it was only a few miles away I drove the car in .. within ten minutes of arriving Robert had the car in the garage and inspected .. turns out the fuel sensors were not operating correctly .. Pennfields mechanic corrected the problem and had the car back on the road in 30 minutes .. the cost .. absolutely free of charge .. that's right nothing .. zelch .. nota .. I even offered to buy Robert lunch which he graciously turned down .. I can tell you I travel the country and this just does not happen anymore .. Robert and his team are trust worthy reliable and experts in vehicle repairs .. I would recommend them to anyone .. anytime .. any place .. I went here to get my Infiniti raised up for the winter. It had aftermarket previously suspension installed. After explaining the suspension system over the phone and explicitly stating that I should not need new springs, they said sure bring it in. I also needed oil change, and winter tire changeover so I figured at the very least I would get away with those. So I brought it in and an older gentleman basically stated that the only way to raise the car was to redo the entire suspension costing "well over 1,000$". After hearing this I was terrified. Then, they quoted me 120.00$ for an oil change and 80.00$ for tire changeover! I was still in shock from the quote for the suspension so I said go ahead and just do the oil and wheels. 45 minutes later, they call me and say that my car was too low to get into their shop! So... I took my car to a nearby garage and got an oil change and air filter for 80.00$, wheel changeover for 50.00$ and took the car to a performance shop in Milford and got it raised up almost 2.5 inches! For 150.00$!!! Bottom line... These guys tried to rip me off in any way possible. They knew I was in a sticky situation and completely took advantage of that. I guarantee they will overcharge you so take your business elsewhere. read more
