As usual, they never disappoint. I had friends coming over. I decided to purchase them some fish. I didn't want any. It was Friday. It's my fault. I should not be going in there. I ordered four pieces of fish. Of course they waited and ordered a large fry. they charged me $15 I paid it. I watched them take the fish and start cutting it and I asked them. Why are you cutting it and putting the other extra pieces back into the deli case so we had to start all over again four pieces and a whole different price and he was playing with the scale pretending to put it on a different price. You know how they do it, etc. etc. so I just went ahead and paid for it. There are nothing but a complete rip off Company they barely have any customers. I wish I could support them since they're around the corner from my house, but they refuse to be honest they are very dishonest and who in their right mind would put Fish in a deli case and then keep putting bags and bags of it right in the deli case it makes absolutely no sense. I love when I find a good fried fish spot! I happened to be in the area... super hungry so I decided to give it a try. Located in a small shopping center (next to 7-11). No wait at all. I placed an order (combo 17) which comes with fried fish of your choice (I got red snapper) and shrimp. You can pick your sides I got macaroni salad and fries and each combo comes with 2 hush puppies. The food was amazing a well seasoned. Once I placed my order I waited about 7 minutes and my food was ready! Piping hot and fresh to order. My only small complaint.... one of the few good fish fry places i have been able to find the red snapper was so good i teared up a bit. the restaurant was clean and a good place to dine in, and the service was amazing. i like my fried fish prepared a certain way and the chef answered all the questions i had about how the catfish is prepped. the menu had a good amount of variety as well which i was happy to see. their fried oysters were also delicious, this is the only place i have been able to find good fried oysters at besides boiling crab. i highly recommend this place to anyone who likes fried fish. read more

This is one of my favorite places to get fish and fries in LA. I came in on 3-22-25 around 8:30pm to get some dinner. I ordered my personal favorite which is the catfish dinner with fries. They are not shy about the abundance of catfish you get per order and it is the same each and every time I order. The staff are very nice and friendly and thankful for your business. It was busy that night with a number of people ordering food so they know how good the place is. You can dine in if you choose but parking can be a challenge. Great place with great food and the late hours are great which they close at 10pm. read more

NOT what I expected from a place I've love for so many years. I should have opened the box just to see since I noticed all new employees . I should have suspected the menu was changed but I didn't expect the shrimps to be so small. I'll go back and see if they still have the jumbo shrimp and let you know. Penguin is just ok. I was referred to Penguin by a store manager at the Beverly Center. I took his word because we are from the same 'tribe,' if you will. I expect Southerners to know good food. He must be judging this by L.A. standards. As a native Angeleno whose family is from the South, this ain't it. I come from a long line of cooking women. I could have produced much better from my kitchen - and have, down to the cole slaw. I ordered a #17 - 3 pieces of fish with 4 jumbo shrimp, fries, cole slaw and bread, because I don't like hush puppies. I also ordered potato salad on the side. I noticed immediately that my food smelled a little fishy when the delivery driver handed me my bag. For people who don't know, seafood should smell aromatic. If it smells fishy, it signifies your food isn't [that] fresh. It looked great. I like the addition of onion rings to the order, because I love onion rings, despite hating onions otherwise. However, they could have kept the two little onion rings they threw in. They were more of an afterthought than an addition. I question the freshness of my order. My food did not arrive hot, despite the driver making it to me quickly from the restaurant. The fries were definitely not fresh or hot, which pmo, because I love french fries. They tasted overcooked and like they sat under a heat lamp. I asked for 2 pieces of red snapper (after reading a review that someone ordered catfish and it was bad) and a piece of filet of sole. They gave me 3 pieces of red snapper and threw in a piece of sole because it was so thin. It was thin and fried hard, which is a no. I would never order the sole by itself, as it is too thin and I would not be satiated. The jumbo shrimp are very large, but they were a bit tough, which means they were overcooked. The cook(s) need(s) to check their cooking time. All orders should be made-to-order, not premade, especially at a fish market. The cole slaw was ok. It was a little too 'soupy' for my taste and it has a sweetness to it, which I'm not a fan of. The tartar sauce came in ketchup-type packets. It should be fresh. The fries are frozen crinkle cut fries, the same as you can buy from the grocery store. The hot sauce was thick - not the kind of hot sauce you eat with fish or shrimp. It's like sriracha, which is a no. The potato salad was surprisingly good. I'm not a big potato salad fan, but theirs is good. The red snapper is ok. It wasn't fried too hard. Will I order from Penguin again? Highly unlikely. I've had better elsewhere and the food was actually hot and fresh on arrival. I wouldn't recommend Penguin if someone hadn't already eaten there, either. The food isn't memorable in a good way. (It isn't some perception that my food wasn't cooked properly. It is a reality. Restaurant owners need to take accountability for their kitchens sending bad food out. They are quick to reply and slow to take accountability or implement the necessary changes to improve. You're always welcomed here enthusiastically by Sergio and his crew. My inner whale beast comes alive here and I order the combo 21 which six pieces of fish with 4 jumbo shrimp. I go for the snapper and then I add hush puppies to that and get either the sweet potato pie or the pecan pie to finish it off. The ambiance is that if fresh fish market and you feel good knowing the best is soon to come. Whether it be fried salmon, snapper or catfish, the fish here are bar none. A very casual but tasty to-go oriented fish and chips spot in a strip mall on Pico Blvd. There is parking right out front in a provided parking lot so getting in and out is very easy. Dining in is possible, but most choose to-go. When ordering you choose the fish you want, they fry it and serve it with fries. It really hits the spot if that's what you're in the mood for. Personally I like grilled fish more, but having a fried option is important too. For my most recent order I chose the Orange Roughy Dinner and it was very good. Pricey at $22.79, but still very tasty. We also ordered the Jumbo Shrimp dinner for $16.79 which was closer to fairly priced. They really give a lot of seafood and fries so you won't be hungry after the meal. I knocked off a star due to price and a lack of other appetizer or side dish options, but I would return in the future and would recommend to anyone looking for fish & chips. read more

It's nearly impossible to find h salt style fish n chips places anymore, so I was excited to drive by this place. Sadly, it's nothing like h salt. It has a very different breading and though there is a great selection of fresh fish, it gets overcooked and dried out. The shrimp have tails on, why? They give you a tiny container that looks like ketchup but is actually a spicy shrimp sauce, and little packets of ketchup and tartar sauce that aren't nearly enough. Better to give medium size cups with these, and where's the vinegar? Two slices of regular white bread in a baggie, really? Cheese bread or garlic bread would be way better. The coleslaw was good, what there was of it. For $30, won't be going back. That didn't even include a drink, they never offered. read more

A no frills fish market that is well worn from years of service. The food is good and fried to order. The young asian man (didn't get his name) is very upbeat and efficient. Ordered #17 fish and shrimp combo - you can choose your fish, I went with snapper since it is a bit thicker than a sole filet. Feel free to look at the case to preview your filets - I spotted Buffalo (iykyk) and will have to try it on my next visit. Fish batter - nice thin and crispy cornflour coating (not cornmeal) - I prefer this over heavy beer batter which is typical of fish and chips. Well seasoned without overpowering the fish. Fries - plenty, the entire bottom half of the cardboard container is fries - salt seasoned - no frills - the oil for the fries could have been fresher but thankfully the fries did not taste like they were cooked in the same oil as the fish. Hush puppies - legit! They add a little green chilli to the batter to give it that sweet corn and spicy flavor. You get two - that's plenty. Sometimes these can be dry and hard - not here, at least, not today. Potato Salad was fine - standard picnic salad you'd get from a deli. Hot Sauce - whoever chose it chose well - nice vinegary and it comes by the ramekin for perfect dipping. Tartar Sauce - generic packets - not bad - not great.
