    Fried catfish and hushpuppies

WOW! Now, THIS is the authentic (but not overseasoned) soul food I've been craving. I saw Mel's Fish Shack on an LA Times article, listing 200 black owned restaurants in Los Angeles and had it bookmarked to try. I randomly passed it on my way home from a work event today, and decided to stop. It's for sure a shack, so prepare to order from the takeout window and head home to eat. I was greeted warmly by Georgiette who chatted me up and answered my questions about the food and the way the sides were prepared. I ordered the catfish dinner which comes with two sides and bread. After deciding to try the hushpuppies and potato salad, Georgette said my order would take 10-15 minutes, which was an accurate estimate. The car ride home was torture because everything smelled SO GOOD! Thankfully, I stopped myself to snap a few pics before digging in. The portions are good for the price point and everything is so flavorful without being too salty. I will absolutely be back for more! Highly recommend.

Menu as of 11/24/23, a bit pricey.

1st time here; Fish Town on LaBrea was closed (11/24/23); day after thanksgiving. I was the 1st customer at 12:11p. Ordered Filet of Sole & Red Snapoer; Fish was hot & good! Also, the man that took my order was Super Cool.

I've always loved this place. You used to be able to sit inside but that wasn't exactly spacious to begin with so I can see why they'd close off the entrance especially during Covid. It was nice being able to watch them make your food though.

Okay. I ordered the Fish & Shrimp Combo. With a side of Fries and Red beans and rice. Really expensive for it not to be that Crispy and seasoned. It was okay. I got Snapper I wish it was a lil more crispy they gave me seasoning salt for the fries hot sauce and tartar sauce on the side. I can tell the tartar sauce was homemade it was really good and the hot sauce wasn't water down. THe red beans and rice was so good too. But not worth the price Honestly.

I come to Mel's a few times a year when I'm craving fried fish. Service is ok, and there really isn't any ambiance. You order at the front door and you food is giving to you when done. I will try Collin's next to see how they compare to Mel's.

This place is good! First off, the service I got was great, he had me cracking up!!! He was super kind and informative when I was asking about the menu. I ordered the catfish with the fried oysters and a side of onion rings. Man, when I tell you it was good, I'm not even joking. I told my brother who was sittin with me that the fried oysters were so good, his reply was, " You ate them so fast, I didn't even know you ordered them cause they weren't on your plate no more." LMAO! I didn't realize I inhaled them. LOL LOL LOL. The catfish & red beans with rice was also really tasty, crisp and flavorful. The only thing I probably wouldn't get again is the onion rings. These were my least favorite, but I loved how each meal come with bread and pepper to make a sandwich with. Yall have to try this place though. It's really good.

I would give a 4 maybe to 5 star if it wasn't due to the amount that was given Food was really good just quantity for what you're paying for not enough paid over 50 just for two combos and a peach cobbler over all it was very good flavor just come on give what your customers pay for j

The food is rather priced high for the quantity of food, which is comparable to two bites. The raw bar's menu is also very limited, especially for substantial food, so have your expectations set before attending. Food standouts were the hamachi crudo and spicy pomodoro pasta. The flavors and textures in the crudo were refreshing and I enjoyed the grapes that added a sweet flavor to the rather acidic bite. The pasta's sauce was very comforting and the pasta was a great vessel to give pops of sauce in each bite. I wish that the dishes had a bit more substance to it, given the price. However, the oysters were kinda letdown. The oysters didn't have much flavor and the sauce they provided was very 1D. The strawberry tiramisu was fun and interactive to flood the cake with sauce. It tasted exactly like the nostalgic strawberry shortcake popsicle. Given the $16 price point, I wish there was some fresh strawberry included and taste a bit less like artificial strawberry milk. The bathroom can also be a photo spot, as it looks like you're in a cave. However, it was very dark inside. Luckily, I found some toilet seat covers from inside the wall? LOL Otherwise, the service was fantastic and attentive. Parking is either valet or street parking which isn't hard to find in the neighborhood, just requires a little bit of walking. The interior and exterior was transformative and teleports you to Greece. Definitely go if you want to experience the aesthetics with a taste of food.

He was very sociable and friendly. We chatted with him and put in an order for the Kiwi Chowder. I ordered a Modelo and my mother ordered a glass of orange blend wine. He came over with the drinks a while later and the Kiwi chowder and have us plenty of time to sit and enjoy the dish before we ordered our main courses. The kiwi chowder was delicious and came with little crackers. The clams and mussels were so tasty and the Ora King Salmon was a nice treat. After a while he came back and served me the Fisherman's Mixed Basket and my mother got the Fish tacos with fish of the day for them being Sword Fish. The fisherman's basket was amazing and paired perfectly with my beer. I had never had clams, mussels, snapper, and oysters all together and they were so good I wish I could have them more frequently. The place was very cute and sat quietly with good music playing. Not current music but music that really fit the place and set the vibe. I will be coming back here and if you ever go, there is no bad choice for the fish, the service is stupendous and I haven't gotten anything like it in forever, and if you meet Clark enjoy a friendly conversation with him.

The last time I went was on October 3rd and September 12th of last year, so it had been almost a year since my last visit. The very first time was last summer with about 10 members from my Korean community group. We all thought the food was really delicious, and that's why I kept coming back. As you would expect from such a popular restaurant, there are always a lot of people here. Yesterday was no exception, and there was a pretty long line outside. Fortunately, the line moved fairly quickly, so it didn't feel too bad. After we decided what to order, I was reminded again that the prices here are quite expensive for a restaurant located inside a food court. Last year, I ordered for all four of us at once, and the total came to almost $200. So this time, we decided to pay separately for my mom and myself, while my two brothers each paid for their own meals. I ordered two of my absolute favorite dishes here, the Tostada de Kanpachi & Uni. This is something I really love because it tastes so fresh and delicious every time I have it. It's definitely a must-order dish for me. I also ordered two Taco de Pescado al Carbón. Those four items alone came to about $70. I also remembered that I had tipped way too much here last year, so this time I only left a $5 tip. (It is the food court system, even they bring the foods to our table) That brought my total to $75. My brothers ordered the large Brazilian fish, the Tostada Uni, and ceviche. Everything we had was delicious overall, but honestly, the tacos I ordered yesterday were not really for my taste at all. So next time I come here, I don't think I'll order the same tacos again. On the way to the restroom, I noticed people at another table eating lobster. I asked them where they ordered it from, and they told me they ordered it from Holbox. It looked absolutely delicious, so I'm definitely going to try the lobster next time I come here. I also really like that they have a water station near the section where people line up outside. There are cups available there, so you can help yourself to water while waiting, which is very convenient. One downside is that the restroom always has a noticeable smell. Fortunately, it's located quite far away from the dining area, but it also doesn't look particularly clean or sanitary. Another thing is that you have to eat certain dishes, especially the tostadas and tacos, with your hands. I personally don't really like eating food with my hands, but with tostadas and tacos, there's really no other way. After washing my hands in the restroom, the smell of the liquid soap is also quite unpleasant and strong. Unfortunately, I can still smell the soap on my hands while I'm eating, which bothers me quite a bit. And because Holbox is always so incredibly popular, finding a table can be difficult. Luckily, we were able to get a table pretty quickly yesterday. Overall, I still really enjoy coming here for the fresh and delicious seafood, especially the Tostada de Kanpachi & Uni. Even though there are a few things I don't love about the experience, the food itself is definitely why I keep coming back.
