My family surprised me with a visit here because I had been wanting to try it for a while, and I'm so glad they did! They recently moved to a newer location not far from the old one, and the space is much larger, nicer, and able to accommodate more people comfortably. We all had a great time, and even my teenage boys enjoyed the experience, which says a lot! The candle making process starts by smelling a wide variety of fragrance candles and writing down the ones you like. I will admit this part can be a little overwhelming because there are so many scents to choose from, but they thoughtfully provide coffee grounds to help reset your sense of smell between fragrances. Once you've narrowed down your favorites, you choose a growler (the container for your candle). From there, a staff member guides you through the process. Sam was wonderful and helped us every step of the way. She also made sure I received my birthday perks, including $20 off, and helped me sign up for the rewards program, which gave me an additional $5 off. They were also running a buy three, get one free promotion which worked perfectly for our group of 4. After selecting your favorite scents, you blend them together to create a custom fragrance. Three scents seemed to be the sweet spot, although you can use more if you'd like. Once your fragrance is finalized, you're given warmed soy based wax to mix with your oils. I loved that the candles are made with soy wax. Sam let us know when everything was ready to be poured into our growlers, and the entire process was fun and easy to follow. One of my favorite parts was getting to name my candle and place the custom sticker on it. The candle takes about two hours to set, so we left and came back at the time they recommended to pick it up. Another thoughtful touch was that the restrooms were stocked with feminine hygiene products, which I always appreciate. If you're looking for a unique, fun experience that is perfect for a family outing, date night, girls' day, or special occasion, try it out. I loved that we came here on Mother's day. I would definitely come back and make another candle!

I went to P&B for the first time with my team of amazing ladies. I'll be the first one to say that I just assumed it was ridiculously expensive to make your own candles but I was so relieved by the number of options they had. The staff broke were so knowledgeable and helped me craft a beautiful scent that I'm pretty proud of. I feel another girls day coming soon.

I've always wanted to make my own candles so I was excited to have a group of friends who were also interested in doing so. We went on a Tuesday night and pretty much had the place to ourselves. It's a gorgeous setting and fun vibe. They do serve drinks to enjoy during the experience. I had a lovely Rose. The process was pretty straight forward but a bit overwhelming at first. You get to choose from like 100 different scents and then narrow them down to 2-4. I believe it was Billy who helped us determine which would work well together. I was happy with how my candle turned out. It was ready the next day.

A REALLY UNIQUE EXPERIENCE My husband made us reservations for 6:30, which is highly recommended. If you've ever been to Bottleworks on the weekends, you know that parking can be a bit of a challenge so plan ahead (we were almost late). When we walked in we were greeted right away and we jumped right in. You start with going through a wall of different scents. And when I say wall, I mean a literal wall of scents. There must've been 100 to go through. Once you list your favorites and find your top 3, you pick your vessel and head back to your area. We were surprised to see they had beers, wines, and seltzers available. Our "helper", Gracie, was really fun to work with. She took a look at our scent lists and made some suggestions on scent pairings. She was very friendly and attentive. After a few drinks in us, we started mixing and pouring until we handed our candles in to start the two hour setting process. They were about to close so we decided to pick our candles up the next day. Overall, such an amazing and unique experience and we'll definitely head back with more friends!

We had a fun hour at Penn and Beech making candles. It was more involved than we thought it would be. We smelled various candle scents that were along a wall. Then we choose a few that we liked and picked out a container. We got recommendations from our tour guide and then we got the oils to smell. You smell scents together to come up with your own blend. Once we were happy with our scent combos we mixed our oils in a jigger cup and smelled the blend to get it just right. Then you add the oils to your wax and stir. Finally finishing by pouring the wax into your container. You have to wait min 2 hours to pick up your candle so it can solidify. We went and had brunch down the street while ours set. We'd do this again for a special occasion.

Penn and Beech Candle Co. was such a fun experience. It was my girlfriend's birthday and our first time there, and even though we were a bit short on time, the staff was incredibly kind and accommodating. We started by smelling our way through the huge wall of scents, which was honestly a blast! We ended up making a sparkling ginger ale scent and a coffee and bread bakery scent, both of which were exactly what we were hoping for. The staff helped keep us on track so we could finish on time, from picking out a glass container to mixing the scent ratios and pouring the candles. We left right on schedule for dinner and came back later, once cured, to pick them up before closing. I really appreciated how helpful and thoughtful everyone was. Overall, such a great experience and we will 100% be back!

Went on a date here and it was such a fun and unique experience! Made a reservation and they were ready for us when we arrived and we were able to stay the process right away. You get to smell all of the scents they have available and then the staff helps you blend the perfect scent you are looking for to create and pour your candle. They also have a menu of drinks you can order during the experience as well. Highly recommend this experience!

My family had such a fun time making candles together! It is overwhelming what to pick scent wise. But the girl helping us out helped us create 3 amazing smelling candles. We were shocked we could be accommodated as we just walked in. I can't wait for the next trip down to Indy! I am excited to make another candle!

This is such a fun date night or outing with friends. It's a great way to switch it up and have something to take home and enjoy! The atmosphere is really cute and the employees make it a fun experience to create a custom candle. There is a small drink menu to add to the fun too. I would warn anyone sensitive to smell, though. It smells amazing at first but I get overwhelmed with all of the scents after a while and feel like I can't smell anything, so it's always a surprise when I pick up my candle the next day and find out how it turned out. We were going to go when I was pregnant but it was too much for me. They also have retail. I love when I see a Penn & Beech candle throughout the city. Several businesses have custom scent blends and they always smell so good!

Such a fun activity to do off Mass Ave. I had not heard of this business, but was given a gift card for Christmas, so I scheduled an appointment through Yelp. The nice thing is that everything is included in the price. The only cost of making a candle is the price of the vessel, which varies dependent on size. Anywhere from $20-$50, they have 1, 2 and 3 wick options. The only added costs are tax, tip and optional drinks. The disappointing thing is that they don't offer soda, only water, sparkling water, and alcohol. Once you arrive, they assign you a seat, then you start smelling all of the fragrance options. You write down your top picks, then choose your vessel. A concierge then comes to your table and helps you narrow down your picks to 2-3 options that would smell good together. They then select those fragrance oils for you to smell. You can go back and forth and pick different options. Once you have settled on your fragrances, you mix the oils together and then add them to hot wax and pour into your vessel. It takes 2 hours for candle to set up. You can leave and come back in 2hrs to pick up your candle, or you can return another day. This is a great location to grab something to eat or do some shopping while waiting. There are plenty of businesses around. With Mass Ave and Bottleworks close by. This is a great group activity, girls night out, bachelorette party, etc. They have tables that seat up to 8 people. If you have less people, you will be sat at a table with other people. They also have seating around the counter area. It is cutely decorated, with a couple photo ops. They have restrooms and large sink to wash up. Closest parking in on the street nearby or the Bottleworks garage.

We always have a great time! The guidance is very valuable and helpful. They help guide you to a cohesive candle scent but still let you experiment with some interesting and unique combos. Very knowledgeable staff and a great activity. Even my husband, who is notoriously against structured crafting (lol), had a good time.

My husband and I visited this location to celebrate our one-year wedding anniversary. This was our very first time ever pouring candles and I loved that we were allowed to move at our own pace. The process of choosing scents and then pairing them together to make something truly unique was very fun and my husband and I were both really good at it, which made it extremely hard to choose which ones we wanted to make into candles. They were running a special where if you buy 3, you get one free. We left with four candles, each in a different type of vessel. They aren't cheap, but if you enjoy really nice candles, then you know that none of them are. They also offer drinks, so we enjoyed a mimosa and some Moscato during our experience. We look forward to visiting again to make those combinations that were left out during this visit.

Penn & Beech Candle Co. Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - Penn & Beech Candle Co.

How much does it cost to make a candle?

It depends on the size of the vessel you select. I think the lowest price was $22 but can go up to $50 or more. If you're with a group, they do buy 3 get one free.

Where is the nearest place to park?

We parked in the Bottleworks Parking Garage. There is some street parking around there as well.

Do they take back old containers to reuse?

You can use your container, and pay per ounce of wax, or get a $1 off per container if you turn yours in and get a new container.

Is the candle pouring kid friendly or is there a minimum age to participate?

I didn't see an age posting; see note above that they had an 11 yr old. I would just say, a child responsible enough because you are pouring hot wax. :)

    Do these burn clean?

Yes. All of our candles are clean burning and free of harsh chemicals.

How much does it cost to make your own candle?

    Starts at $20!

The staff that was there when I visited was pretty young, which could explain the laid back vibe--but they were all very nice, helpful, and super knowledgeable, which was awesome. Starting with the not so great: - A downside to this particular place is that instead of choosing different scents to mix, they already have them pre-mixed. For example, champagne and clean linen scents are already combined, rather than letting you choose and mix them yourself. Since it's structured this way, it does speed up the process, but I will say there are still a few pre-mixed scents you can mix together that would probably turn out smelling great. - When I went to pick up my candle a few days later, I was disappointed to find that it was damaged. Not sure how it happened, but I was shocked when I unwrapped it to discover it was chipped. Even more disappointing was that the staff wrapped a damaged item without mentioning it to me. On the positive side: - It's BYO food and drinks, which we loved. My friends and I brought a bottle of prosecco, charcuterie, and quiche to enjoy. Our server let us eat, drink, and chat before starting the candle pouring, which was perfect for catching up! - Parking is easy - Gorgeous vessels to choose from - Reasonably priced They also have a little gift shop with an assortment of trinkets!

They're clean with tons of stalls and a cool rustic vibe. They do a great job knowing why someone might stop here. It's quick in, but (admittedly) a slower "out" as I usually end up shopping and finding neat stuff. You're probably going to walk away with something you want here too. It's a seasonal megastore every time we come here. During Christmas months, tons of Christmas. During fall, lots of autumn. During Spring, Easter, etc. You get it. It's not just the crap you see at big box stores; it's the special-ordered decoration places, feeling more like a huge Hallmark (if you remember those from the malls!) than just a bunch of stuff you've seen 30 times before. If you're not a decorator, they also have a decent selection of small business food (soup starters, seasoning packets for meats, etc.) and local craft beers (you can buy single cans!) to choose from. They ALSO, as the giant candle would imply, have tons of candles. Oddly enough, we rarely buy candles here - though they have a huge selection. We're usually much-more-distracted by everything else. There's also a fresh/homemade candy/fudge counter, and I *think* there's a coffee/cafe in the next-door building as well. They also sell outdoor decor? Some pretty neat stuff too. It's a really cool stop, and if you need to stop, it's well-worth stopping here over any of the nearby gas stations.
