I have now lived in Florida for 13 years and have yet to find anywhere that can make catfish like they do in Mississippi (where I was born and raised). Everytime we go to Mississippi, I HAVE to eat here at least once! Depending on how long we are visiting, I will often eat here 2-3 times. They make the BEST fried catfish and the hushpuppies are to die for! Just thinking about the food now makes me want to hop in the car and drive for the next 13-14 hours!!! I always have to get the catfish because I can't get it to my expectations in Florida. But, the chicken-on-a-stick is so amazing also. The chicken is separated on the stick with yummy fried pickles. My mouth is watering yet again just thinking about it!! Not only is the food outstanding; the staff are all outstanding as well. You will definitely experience the true southern charm here. I noticed food under the lights About 15 minutes later the cooked dumped 3 or 4 pieces of chicken nuggets and 2 or 3 pieces of catfish to the food under the lights. The waitress started to collect my order and I asked if I was getting the food under the lights. She said that the Cook had put new food out. This is the place in Brandon, MS to get catfish! When I want catfish, I always go to Penn's. Make sure you have plenty of time because they are usually busy, but the food is worth the wait. The staff knows me and my hubby love lemon on our fish. So, every time we go and order food. they always offer lemon in a cup for us, plus the usual hot sauce and tartar sauce. There was only one time the staff didn't offer tartar sauce, but the fish is so good you don't need it! When the fair comes to town, I always get a hankering for a chicken on a stick. I called back thinking it was a mistake and who ever answered the phone picked it up and slammed it in the counter. When I hung up and tried to call back the lines stayed busy. Who does this? What kind of business acts this way. When I go inside it's no better. The people are cranky and barely speak. They are no help when you ask questions about the menu. This is the 4th of 5th chance for the Brandon location of Penn's. They've become a disaster. By that, I mean, you can ALWAYS count on something wrong with your order. I'd already said I wasn't going back when they charged me for a LARGE half fish and half shrimp; but once I called they offered a comp meal. BUT, the day I decided to cash it in, they were so rude to me trying to make me feel bad that I act5ually cashed it in. And, I TIP huge. Bad idea, as I called in my order around 6:45 p.m., drove through and FINALLY got the order around 8:20, was given the wrong order at the window then they took it back and gave me (a) order. I'd ordered a LARGE catfish dinner, and got 5 pieces of fish. (5). So, for 10.99, I get 4 pieces on a regular dinner, but for TWICE the price, I get ONE more piece? I tried calling again and no one answered the phone. So, the choice is made to turn off the money. No thanks. Dear Penns customers! Most of the workers here at penns are young. Meaning, their in school, their getting off late and having to stay up late to study and get up early with a minimum amount of sleep and go to school and do the same thing all over again the next day. When "rude" customers come in, it makes them feel terrible.. it hurts their feelings. I know this because I work here.. I've had money thrown at me for our prices being too high, I've had someone yell and cuss at me through the window and at the counter in front of God and everybody. I've had to console a coworker from crying because someone made her embarrassed and cussed at her through the window. People up from cannot help the prices, we don't make the prices.. we can't help how long the food takes to cook, we're not able to snap our fingers and the food be done.. we can't help that you only get two sauces and you have to pay for extra.. yes, granted we do get orders wrong. 9 times out of 10 it's because we're SLAMMED with call ins, people coming in and just coming in, AND a 30 plus people group.. Stumbled upon Penn's on a trip to visit family. Pleasantly surprised. We ordered the grilled catfish which was freshly cooked and flavorful. Fried okra was fresh and turnip greens were slightly sweet and savory. Hush puppies were a little simple for my tastes but still a nice crunch with the greens. My hubby had the green beans and new potatoes, which were just as good. You order at the counter and pick your own table. There was a short wait but the sizzling fish was worth it. Penn's has good food, but this location's service sucks. I called in my order. Waited 15 minutes before I left the house and my food still wasn't ready when I got there. Asked what was taking so long and she said we are waiting on hushpuppies. No thank you for your patience from her or anything. It was like she could care less if I waited on my food or not. So when I get my food my hushpuppies are hot and fresh and my chicken and fries are cold of course. Every time I come here the wait is horrible even if I call my order in. I understand u r not fast food but u are cooking on commercial grade cooking appliances right? It shouldn't take so that long to get your food. Also, the lady in front of me order was wrong when she got it. She was going through her bags and had fried corn when she asked for boiled corn. How are u so slow and still get the order wrong??? I got catfish here and it was very good. The pieces were kind of small, but the price was reasonable. Also good were hush puppies and fried okra. The cole slaw seemed off. They were very busy so the food took a little while, but I think it was worth it. My only complaint is how greasy the whole restaurant is. My feet literally stuck to the floor and the vinyl tablecloths were sticky, too. Not enough to put me off, though. I'll be back. read more
