After a long redeye flight, first thing I needed to do was to get a bagel in New York. I stumbled across this local place and decided to give it a try, especially since I saw they had a wide variety of bagel sandwich options. It's a small, crowded shop with a couple of tables in the back, but most people were lining up to get their food to-go. I got their Bestseller sandwich on an everything bagel, and it really hit the spot! The bagel itself was nice and fluffy, and having it toasted made a huge difference -- that first crunchy bite was so comforting that it removed the exhaustion from the flight for a moment for me. The turkey bacon and the egg are in good ratio with each other and neither overpowered the sandwich. The sriracha mayo really sold it for me, just a nice kick to elevate the sandwich. The staff were kind and quick, and the pastries in the display also looked really good. If I were to come back, I'd love to try more of their other sandwich varieties!

I'm always searching for new places to eat in Eastern Parkway pre or post Brooklyn Botanic Garden visit. Today, I decided to go off the beaten path and try Penny House Cafe. I wanted a small bite; bagel and hot chai. I entered and stood about five minutes until I was waited on. That was strike one: an employee was standing near the window on her cell phone and the server didn't notice me. Odd, one would think a patron enters through the door and...? Idk maybe greet her? I ordered a toasted plain bagel with plain cream cheese and a small hot chai with oat milk. Phone employee runs to ring my order up and the grand total is $12.55. I politely ask " Is that my total?" " For a bagel with cream cheese and Chai?" She responds " Yes". Then adds "If I itemize it for you, there is a bagel, with cream cheese, $1 extra for oat milk and then the Chai itself". Gee, thanks!!!!! I really wanted to leave at that moment. Honestly, Starbucks probably would have been cheaper. Sadly, I didn't. Imo oat milk, soy milk, almond milk shouldn't be extra charge unless you are milking a cow in the back. These varieties are not " special" they are part of everyday consumption. I found a table near the ordering station because I wasn't sure if they would serve it to me or I had to pick up my order itself. The server comes to my table ( I had to wipe off the crumbs myself, strike two). He states " Oh, I didn't know you were staying, I'm sorry". Gee, did either of them ask me that when I placed my order? No. The bagel was fresh, perfectly toasted but now here's the worst of it. The Chai was a muddled mess. This concoction was a milky, tasteless brew. I really hate writing non stellar reviews but I have to say, in summary, this is what $12.55 got me: Rude service Unkempt table Not great chai. Prices that don't add up to value (See my pictures of prices posted on their website.) Needless to say, I will choose wisely when going off the beaten path.

The best service and immaculate sandwich. I wish I lived closer by because this may have been the best breakfast sandwich to grace my Saturday. Thank you!!

One of the last few coffee shops I hadn't yet visited in this part of the neighborhood. Not sure why I held out so long! Penny House is a nice if small cafe where you could easily sit and work for several hours, or just for a few minutes while enjoying your drink. I stayed for about 3 hours to get some work done. The Wi-Fi was fast. A small thing that enhanced the experience: The music they played in the shop was calm, a bit jazzy, and all instrumental. I've noticed that when coffee shops play loud club music it kind of detracts from the whole experience. My iced coffee was good although expensive for what it was, in my opinion. Nearly $5 for a regular iced coffee (not cold brew) seems high. I didn't order any food, but the menu is huge and the sausage and egg bagel that my friend got looked great.

Came here for a quick bite one morning and was so happy with my breakfast sandwich. I ordered the 'best seller' and it was absolutely full of flavor, melt in your mouth good. Definitely a best seller for a reason. This is a small cafe with a few random seats in the back as well as a seat or two on the sidewalk in front. Coffee was fine. Service friendly and fast. This will be a new favorite stop for me in this neighborhood. 4.8/5

DELICIOUS bagels!! Staff was also very friendly and accommodating- highly recommend for food and coffee!

Really charming and cozy cafe / deli near prospect park. A couple of seating & pretty narrow place. There's one cook and one manning the cash register so expect your order to take a while. However, while you wait there are free wifi and attentive service to distract you!

Was looking for a good breakfast sandwich near where I was staying and the reviews on the bagel sandwiches sold me. I gotta say, they weren't lying. I shared half a chicken bagel and egg and avocado bagel. They came stuffed and full of flavor. The coffee was good, too. The people working there were kind and turned out our food and coffee quick!

Custom bagel breakfast sandwich with 2 fried eggs , salmon, onions, tomatoes, greens, chive cream cheese.

Nice happy hour and a large chocolate drink selection I was at this unique Guatemalan (ish) restaurant a while back with one of my groups. I said "ish" because the menu has dishes from all over, ranging from sandwiches to BBQ ribs to Guatemalan and Mexican soups. It's out there, and even though not everything works that well, it's fun, and if you can't find something you want to order here, you probably shouldn't go out to restaurants. There was also live jazz music that night, which was loud but nice to listen to. Since it was happy hour, a bunch of us got drinks. I went with a maracuya margarita, which was decent; someone else had a jalapeño margarita, someone had a beer, and someone had a mojito. There were a few nice hot sauces on the table, with the red one reminding me of salsa macha as it had a smoky kick and a spicier green sauce reminiscent of ají verde. They gave us some complimentary blue corn chips and a very mild black bean dip, which was tasty enough and hard to complain about, as it was free. From the appetizers, we got the Hot Figs for $15.95, consisting of honey goat cheese, corn tortilla chips, and plum + pumpkin seeds. This was a unique and fun blend and reminded me more of something you would find in a wine bar. The mix of sweet and salty, with a bit of crunch from the seeds, was nice. This was good, and I would recommend it for a table rather than for a solo diner. There was also The Zingy Salad for $21.95, featuring zucchini spirals, yuzu, tomato, onion, cilantro, pumpkin seeds, and a jalapeño infusion. $18.95. The salad was fine with a bit of crunch and a mild spiciness. It was fine, though a bit wet, for lack of a better word. The best dishes of the night were the soups, which each had its own distinct flavor profile. My sight presence went to the Pepián for $21.95, consisting of chicken, pumpkin/sesame seeds, green tomatillo, cinnamon, cumin, black pepper, carrots, chili coban/pasta/guaque, and potato + rice. There was plenty of tender chicken inside, with the soup having a nice roasted flavor with some spice and a bit of sourness. The potatoes and rice on the bottom added more sustenance to this dish. Almost equally delicious was the Caldo Tlalpeño Rojo for a dollar more with shredded chicken, tomato, black pepper, garlic, onions, peas, chickpeas, corn, achiote, chipotle, Monterey jack cheese, and crunchy blue corn tortilla chips. By comparison, this was a bit heartier, with the melted cheese and shredded tortilla chips inside, similar to soups found in Mexican cuisine. While I also liked the mix of veggies a bit more in this one, as it added a bit more texture, I still slightly preferred the flavor of the other soup, as I usually prefer a bit more spice. The rest of the food was fine. The TPC sandwich for $19.95 with chicken, peanut butter, coconut cream, ginger, cilantro, pickled carrots, and lime was fine. For the number of ingredients, I found it a bit sweet, likely from the cream and the peanut butter mix. The bread was nice, but it also fell apart. It came with a nice side salad with a good vinaigrette. The most expensive at $24.95 were the Slow Cooked BBQ Ribs, consisting of baby back ribs with rice and beans. The ribs were almost a bit too tender as they lacked any bite, which was nice, but the sauce was a bit too generic tasting, reminding me of Sweet Baby Ray's or something similar. The rice and beans were standard. This was also OK. Next came some dessert. There was first the $12.95 Rosemary Churros served with dulce de leche & chocolate dips. While I'm not sure if it worked, the rosemary did add a unique smell and a bit of flavor, and at least it wasn't generic. The churros themselves were hot, and the sauces were standard, with my preference being the dulce de leche. I also ordered a Champurrado for $7.95, which was fine. It wasn't as thick as I expected, though perhaps the style is a bit different than the champurrados I rarely buy from Mexican street carts. The chocolate flavor was very nice, though, and I like that it wasn't too sweet. Another person got a $4 Alfajor, which I got a bite of, which was standard. This place is a bit hard to rate. The two soups were wonderful, I liked the appetizers, and I found a couple of the other dishes just OK. Overall, it was a good meal, but I'm not craving to go back. This would be the perfect 3.5, but I'll round up as that doesn't exist.

The sandwich was very well made with a nice crisp panko crusting that didnt feel heavy on the oil, and yet still managed to have a light airy egg inside. The eggs rothko was buttery and flavorful but still managed to not feel too heavy. The broiled tomatos on the side were a nice touch to contrast the egg and toast from the main dish. Overall I enjoyed this place and would love to come back to try more dishes. The vibe was friendly and welcoming, making it the perfect weekend brunch spot.
