Genuinely some of the best food I've had in a WHILE. I was there for a while, and although it was a bit crowded. However, I think that goes to show how much people actually like this place. I was there a few weeks ago, and I'm just now getting to review it, but I feel like I should have done this earlier! I had been coming back from the Brooklyn Museum, and it was raining very badly. I was hungry, and I wanted somewhere to go just so I would not be in the rain. I was with one of my friends who was also hungry and just wanted to get out of the rain. We found this place, and we both loved it very much. The food was served fairly fast despite there being quite a few people there, the servers were funny, the presentation was STUNNING, and the chicken was perfectly cooked. They also warmed our pastries up, which is SUCH a big thing for both of us. We love that it was offered upon just ordering our pastries. Also, the decor in there was beautiful. It was warm, it smelled so good, and I was sitting at the window, so I got a view of the street! The people working there were kind, the people ORDERING were kind, and honestly, I can not say anything bad about how the place looked. Cozy alone does not do this place justice. The prices were fair. They were not exactly cheap, but it was so worth it. Another thing I'm big on is that I'm quite picky. I don't eat much at restaurants because I nearly always find something I don't like or someone forgets to leave something out of my order. They didn't. I have no complaints. My partner and I wanted to grab lunch before walking around the park and discovered Penny House, decided to stop in due to strong reviews.. it did not disappoint! We opted to share a cold brew (which was sooooo deliciously nutty) and the special of the day which was a breakfast sandwich featuring beef sausage. I don't typically have high expectations of bagels from places that aren't solely bagel shops, BUT the everything bagel we had our sandwich on was great in flavor, texture, etc. To top it off, service was super friendly and quick. Kind and friendly staff who looked like they were enjoying their work. Strong coffee. Affordable prices with a good range - something for everyone, fancier options for those with more to spend. Cozy, gently lived-in feeling spot, clean and tidy and nicely decorated without feeling overly polished. On this first visit I just ordered a coffee and a Russian sandwich (bagel, chive cream cheese, smoked salmon, tomato, capers, olive oil and herb drizzle) and it was fantastic. Each element was great on its own. I sat down to eat for about 30 minutes and it was calm and quiet. The gentleman running the kitchen welcomed me and I asked what his favorite sandwich was and ordered that. He had good rapport with the regulars who stopped in. After a long redeye flight, first thing I needed to do was to get a bagel in New York. I stumbled across this local place and decided to give it a try, especially since I saw they had a wide variety of bagel sandwich options. It's a small, crowded shop with a couple of tables in the back, but most people were lining up to get their food to-go. I got their Bestseller sandwich on an everything bagel, and it really hit the spot! The bagel itself was nice and fluffy, and having it toasted made a huge difference -- that first crunchy bite was so comforting that it removed the exhaustion from the flight for a moment for me. The turkey bacon and the egg are in good ratio with each other and neither overpowered the sandwich. The sriracha mayo really sold it for me, just a nice kick to elevate the sandwich. The staff were kind and quick, and the pastries in the display also looked really good. If I were to come back, I'd love to try more of their other sandwich varieties! read more

I'm always searching for new places to eat in Eastern Parkway pre or post Brooklyn Botanic Garden visit. Today, I decided to go off the beaten path and try Penny House Cafe. I wanted a small bite; bagel and hot chai. I entered and stood about five minutes until I was waited on. That was strike one: an employee was standing near the window on her cell phone and the server didn't notice me. Odd, one would think a patron enters through the door and...? Idk maybe greet her? I ordered a toasted plain bagel with plain cream cheese and a small hot chai with oat milk. Phone employee runs to ring my order up and the grand total is $12.55. I politely ask " Is that my total?" " For a bagel with cream cheese and Chai?" She responds " Yes". Then adds "If I itemize it for you, there is a bagel, with cream cheese, $1 extra for oat milk and then the Chai itself". Gee, thanks!!!!! I really wanted to leave at that moment. Honestly, Starbucks probably would have been cheaper. Sadly, I didn't. Imo oat milk, soy milk, almond milk shouldn't be extra charge unless you are milking a cow in the back. These varieties are not " special" they are part of everyday consumption. I found a table near the ordering station because I wasn't sure if they would serve it to me or I had to pick up my order itself. The server comes to my table ( I had to wipe off the crumbs myself, strike two). He states " Oh, I didn't know you were staying, I'm sorry". Gee, did either of them ask me that when I placed my order? No. The bagel was fresh, perfectly toasted but now here's the worst of it. The Chai was a muddled mess. This concoction was a milky, tasteless brew. I really hate writing non stellar reviews but I have to say, in summary, this is what $12.55 got me: Rude service Unkempt table Not great chai. One of the last few coffee shops I hadn't yet visited in this part of the neighborhood. Not sure why I held out so long! Penny House is a nice if small cafe where you could easily sit and work for several hours, or just for a few minutes while enjoying your drink. I stayed for about 3 hours to get some work done. The Wi-Fi was fast. A small thing that enhanced the experience: The music they played in the shop was calm, a bit jazzy, and all instrumental. I've noticed that when coffee shops play loud club music it kind of detracts from the whole experience. My iced coffee was good although expensive for what it was, in my opinion. Nearly $5 for a regular iced coffee (not cold brew) seems high. I didn't order any food, but the menu is huge and the sausage and egg bagel that my friend got looked great. read more

Today, I ordered the Pennyhouse Club and it was the best!!!! The way that the grilled chicken is seasoned, the turkey bacon combined with the flavors of the chicken, the mayo, lettuce, and tomato.... Great food, good coffee. It's a La Colombe blend, made in a commercial drip machine into a carafe- all well cleaned and cared for- so it's on the high-quality end of generic non-single origin drip. The service sucks though. The employees have a habit of serving people in whatever order they feel like which I imagine comes from the fact that orders are handled personally and serially. So if you don't stand out and they're somewhat busy be prepared to wait for no good reason. Like I've waited 20 mins for a coffee that comes out of a carafe here. Not because they had to brew more but because there's just no organization. There's no POS or pad-and-paper order system. People are waiting for their orders at the same place they're placing them. Imagine what it's like to work here and have to remember who has and hasn't ordered, and what they ordered, all while trying to focus on making good food and drinks in a sanitary manner. Of course you can only handle one order at a time! Of course people are waiting forever to place simple orders! Of course orders are taken in order of who's the cutest chick in line first! Nobody can remember all that crap all the time, so they start being dragged along by instinct. And yo maybe I've got it wrong but after having experienced this myself the last 5 times I've been here and seeing it echoed in other reviews I feel like I'm not crazy and this is a real problem. Also, malding in Yelp replies isn't going to improve people's stress level when you get slammed or keep people from having bad experiences. Be better. And then when you ask for more they give you a MOUNTAIN load of cream cheese on the side which is truly a waste. This cafe also just rubbed me the wrong way from the moment I walked in. Side note: Omar, the owner who responded to this review clearly doesn't value customer experience or feedback. He laughed at it. Didn't even message to ask WHY I felt rubbed the wrong way. Stopped in for the first time today and was not disappointed! The service is stellar; both cashiers were pleasant and helpful, as well as the other employees who acknowledged me as soon as I walked through the door.
