What can I say? Penny House Cafe absolutely delivered in every sense. Right next to Prospect Park, we decided to go to start our day before exploring the Park & Library. Turns out, this would be some of our best food in Brooklyn. I'll start by mentioning how excellent the service was here. They answered all of our questions & provided a great first experience with fresh food & drinks to boot. I ordered an Egg, Ham, & Cheese Everything Bagel and my friend Kevin ordered the Norwegian. We ordered coffee as well, despite the fact I'm not a coffee drinker, which turned out to be perfect for the crisp morning. We decided to eat at Prospect Park, since the inside was a little crowded, so we figured we'd explore a bit. The bagels were incredible, from the texture, to the fresh ingredients, all of it. 10/10 there. We both were blown away. I loved the coffee too, perfect pairing with the bagel. I've been here a number of times and the food is good, not great. I usually get an everything bagel with cream cheese but they don't usually put enough cream cheese on it IMO. The decor/space is pretty average. They have a time limit for how long you can be there on busy days FYI. What is appalling to me is some of the business owners' responses to reviews here. It's embarrassing when owners can't own their mistakes and get mad at the customer or convince themselves that they must be vindictive or a competitor. Maybe one or two reviews could come like that but sometimes you need to humble yourself and know you could improve. While you are LOL LOLing to reviews, people are LOLing at you because you're embarrassing yourself. read more

We stopped by Penny House Cafe to hang out and play card games while some of us got some beverages and pastries. It's a small place with sitting in the back and a very laid-back host. He let us stay until it was closing time, around 6:30 pm. I would definitely stop by again if I'm in the area and need a place to sit and read. read more

So Penny House is an awkward place for me to review because I don't particularly dislike it but it has significant enough problems that it makes me avoid the place most of the time. I think every time I come here I always get the sense of disorder in the shop. In particular there isn't any ordered lines to the front.. in fact the front is setup on the left and people have to walk up to the cashier on the right so often the staff just pick out people they see in the crowd and ask for their orders. This quite annoying when they end up picking people who arrive later but just so happen to be in the staffs line of sight. This has happened a few times for me in the past and severely offended one of my friends when I showed them this place once. Besides the line situation it also feels like they have difficulty keeping orders, it has not been uncommon for me to have to clarify what I ordered previously because they were trying to juggle 100 or so other orders. It just feels chaotic here, especially when it's a crowded day. But besides that this place does offer good coffee and food. The breakfast sandwiches in particular are nice and I can't think of a coffee shop that offers something like that around the area. They also offer a unique dirty chai which I like. It's just not enough though for me to come back here considering the service. I can see why people would like this place but I can't honestly recommend it considering there is so much competition for coffee shops in the area. With the Botanical Garden hosting a festival this weekend the neighborhood was especially crowded... so we walked a little bit farther down Washington Ave to the Penny House Cafe and discovered a little treasure on the border of Prospect Heights and Crown Heights. It's a cozy place with a small kitchen/counter and a few tables in the back, but they serve up a nice selection of baked goods, sandwiches and coffees. We both opted for something off their lunchtime menu - three-cheese quesadillas. Hubs added veggies and chicken to his order, I don't have time for veggies so mine just had chicken. The guy behind the counter made sure to mention "it doesn't come w/ salsa or anything..." ok...no problem. And it wasn't a problem at all. The chicken in this quesadilla was so juicy and flavorful you won't miss any of those silly condiments. The menu board says "three cheese quesadilla" ... come to find out the three cheeses are American, Cheddar and Swiss. Each cheese layer added a different element to the quesadilla and created a lovely gooey cheesey goodness. Paired with that amazing seasoned chicken and you've got a dreamy quesadilla. I tried to get the guy at the counter to tell me what was in the chicken marinade - but he smiled and said it was a secret... I guess I'll just have to visit again and order another quesadilla (or maybe their chicken sandwich) and see if I can figure it out for myself. Note - the website menu isn't updated. Quesadillas are $6 + $1 for veggies and $2 for chicken. They area also huge! So don't balk at the price... they're worth it. read more

I got a egg whites and cheese sandwich on a roll, I requested salt and pepper in the eggs, and ketchup on the sandwich and got none of the above. I ended up only taking a few bites, being as there was no salt or pepper in the eggs it didn't taste good to me. However to someone else who enjoys eggs without salt and pepper it may have been delicious. I'm not sure if they could accommodate my request or if they just didn't bother to but I think almost every where that prepares food has salt and pepper in the area. Definitely wasn't worth $5.44. For your pal tends to practice trainspotting near the teeming tendrils of Broadway Junction, where a good third of Brooklyn's subway lines converge into a irreconcilable cobweb of broken rails and shattered dreams. But there are no severed promises at the Penny House. Not if you have something going on in your life that the affluent and the empty will never know. This place has been around forever, long before they painted the surrounding buildings in bright hues to spike property value and jack up rent. Long before the attorneys and the bankers replaced the artists and the dreamers in Prospect Heights. But there are still some of the latter handful around. And Penny House is a subtle Mecca for them. The generous garrulous gent who runs the place has a head for regulars and fist-bumps ambiverts who swing just this side of ephemeral misanthropy. He has an uncanny knack for making the right people feel welcome and for tolerating the ones who will never swing by again. Beneath his gregariousness, he is a very patient man. He is doing his part to tell the best of Brooklyn (the ones never lauded or laureled by the smug yuppies who think nothing of blowing a Ben Franklin on tasteless lunches spiced down for the vanilla-minded and who are regularly belligerent to anyone who remotely counts as Bohemian these days) that this is a second home. Second homes (and, your pal would argue, first homes) are becoming rarer as we chase away the best, the brightest, and, alas, the broke. So that ethos is good for three solid stars right there. But let's secure the other two stars. There are four tables. And the seating scarcity says to anyone that you'd better be serious about hanging here. You'd better appreciate the place and do something with your life. Something different. Something that drew you to the five boroughs. A vision that jolted you out of bed when you lived somewhere else. When you said to yourself that you'd come to New York and not be swallowed up, only to learn that your only real chance of surviving and of making a mark meant making an effort. So if you sit down at one of the quartet, you'd better rise to the occasion. If you're firing up Excel as you open your laptop, this ain't the place for you. If you're here to engage in fake meetings for your startup (which your pal espies in every other cafe these days), this ain't the place for you. Even so, the feel hasn't stopped certain venture capitalists from inhabiting the place. But don't worry. They usually don't last. For if an authentic original sits at an adjacent table, the six figure salary man will flee. There are laughs from the front and an amusing triptych of toilet paper in the bathroom. That the joint manages to serve as much food as it does -- given its underdog stature -- says much more. This is a scrappy place that makes the most of what it has, much like the best people in Brooklyn. This is the kind of place that the hopelessly incurious describe as "okay." This is the kind of place where nobody quite announces that it's not okay to be "okay" with this place. But the feel is implied, communicated by what now counts for semaphore. Although I'm glad they provided a whole wheat wrap option, there was a little too much turkey bacon for me. Price: $5.95, so not cheap nor expensive. Atmosphere: We went around noon time yet it wasn't crowded, felt very casual, was quiet, and had many available seats. There was also free wifi so would be a nice place to study & do work. Ultra quick service. Deliscious breakfast+coffee, and very casual environment. Really enjoy my time here. Very relaxed vibe, nothing to fancy, nothing bourgeois about it. Got everything an about 10 minutes - lightly toasted bread sandwiching a hearty omelette, tomato, and creamy hummus. All the ingredients are cooked well, though the hummus didn't really go well with the eggs (still good enough to eat). Dirty Chai has a big pumpkin flavor, and had just enough of a kick to get me through the day. Fairly straightforward place - order up front from a simple menu, then take back and enjoy. This little spot is right around the corner from my home. I'm not usually a breakfast person, but I'd pop in every once in a while for a coffee because they make a great cuppa and are so warm and friendly. Were I feeling really indulgent, I'd get a bagel with butter. They're happy to toast them but theirs are so fresh they are perfect as they are. I'd never liked smoked salmon (yes, I'm weird) but had an OK experience when I was on vacation, tried a bit at Russ and Daughters and felt a little craving for it - so I went to Penny House because I knew they had great bagels and loved their service. Turns out, their Russian Sandwich is the PERFECT smoked salmon bagel treat. They make egg ones as well with the Salmon, but the balance in their Russian Bagel is second to none. If you're lucky enough to be hungry and in my nabe when they are open - go. If you're not hungry...take it to go for later that day.
