Just popped down here from my room at the Palladian. They were pretty busy on a Sunday night but the staff were very friendly and helpful. I ordered a vodka paralyzer which came in a cool tiki cup. My partner didn't want alcohol so they made her a custom mocktail. Not sure what was in it but it was fruity with a kick of ginger and it was delicious! We came across this place after miles and miles of walking around the city doing the "tourist" things. First the location is perfect, the ambience and food was good. The one thing we agreed upon before arriving to Seattle, WA from Virginia Beach, VA was that we would try new things and if we can get it back home then we will not get it while we are here. So this place was a perfect place to start for dinner. Everything on the menu looked good but the choices we made were amazing. Definitely a spot I would recommend and go to again! This is my fav cocktail spot in the city. Love their rotating creative drink menus and the bites from Shaker and Spear next door. But the service always seems to be a struggle. I've been here early in the afternoon, later in the evening just before a show across the street, and whether it's busy or slow service either at the bar or anywhere at the tables seems to take forever. There are only a few things you need to know about Pennyroyal: 1. The drinks are delicious, this is because... 2. The bartenders are talented, and use great ingredients. 3. The space is cool, even though it's in a hotel lobby. 4. Despite the hotel-lobby-ness of the bar, see #1. 5. They have super rad black coasters with gold crowns on them. I want some. 6. Fernet on tap, and the only thing better than Fernet on tap is... 6. Serving shots of tap Fernet in lego shot glasses. Seriously if you don't know what good cocktails are all about, it's time to get educated. While there are plenty of places to do this in Seattle, Pennyroyal is an excellent option. Especially because the bartenders are skilled, have a great back bar, and lack the normal level of pretense that comes alongside all of the things listed above. However if you're out looking to get wasted off of highballs, hit on people, be part of a scene, or for any of those those reasons other than to enjoy a solid cocktail in a chill but upscale environment, this may not be the place for you. What am I, nuts? This place is five stars all the way. Came back tonight and had a fantastic cocktail, a great glass of sherry, and enough small plates to make one of the best dinners I've had in a long time. I have friends who say, "I don't eat the service." And while I agree and I don't often ding a place for mediocre or even bad service, Pennyroyal has fantastic service. Like, THE BEST. Friendly, knowledgable staff who will engage you if its not too busy. Sitting alone at a bar has never been so fun! If I could give PennyRoyal and all of the staff above 5 stars I would do it in a heartbeat. Never have I been treated so well and like family at a bar. To give some background my husband and I got married this past weekend and wanted some pictures in a bar close to where we used to live. I know some bars are particular about bringing cameras in and taking photos, so I called about a week ahead of time to make sure it was okay. Ryan answered and not only did he say we could take pictures but he would reserve the corner table for us (in my opinion the prettiest photo spot). Now, I didn't fully cry at my wedding but when I walked into PennyRoyal and saw fresh Pike Place flowers, a bottle of champagne, a framed sign for the newlyweds and were presented with a gift bag and a beautiful Shaker & Spear menu signed by all the staff, I did cry. They went above and beyond. We will continue to come back for many years. We came back for drinks the next night and have told all of our friends that PennyRoyal is the place. Gorgeous decor, amazing service, kind people and on both nights our drinks were amazing and the assistant bar manager even sat down to talk to us about spirits. I am so thankful to Ryan and everything he did. read more

Located in the lobby of our hotel, we stopped in after dinner one night for a night cap. I wanted a coffee and Bailey's. As they don't have Bailey's, the bartender-ess offered to make up something that could be similar to Bailey's. So, sure! It wasn't great, but it was ok. The nice thing was, she offered to give it a shot. One night on the way out, they had something called Tiki Night (I believe it was a Sunday night) and they were playing interesting classic tango sounding music and everyone was dancing like they knew what they were doing.... I watched, wanted to try but had plans and had to run out the door. It was neat though. I cannot comment on the food but they do serve breakfast/brunch, all day bites and happy hour. read more

So-so. We stopped in to have a drink and a snack before an 8pm show at the Moore across the street. The place was busy, but overly so, and we found seats at the bar. The bartender was stationed right in front of us, yet didn't acknowledge us, or offer a drink or food menu. We found a bar menu nearby and, eventually, placed an order. While we waited, we saw food being delivered to others, and realized there was a food menu, but not one we had been offered. We saw a platter of chips and hot crab dip nearby, and when our own chip order was delivered, it was completely different. We asked about the other dip, and were told if we wanted that it was something else, and if we wanted that, it would be a 20-minute wait - by which time, we'd be late for our show. Um, thanks. The drinks were fine but not amazing. The chips were good but there weren't very many of them. The service was slow and indifferent. Two stars. read more

If I were to judge Pennyroyal on its drinks alone, it would earn 4 stars; however, that is not how yelp works. The service, prices, and lack of happyhour left me hoping for more. The service is not quick. On two seperate ocassions I stood at the entrance near the bar waiting to be greeted. The first time I left because after 5-10 minutes I remained invisible to the bartenders and staff. The second time I had to call for their attention. The drinks are vey expensive: beers range from $8-10 and all cocktails are more than $12. Now, they do make their drinks with solid ingredients, which partially makes up for their steep prices. But, given these prices, I think Pennyroyal will not survive without a happy hour that is at least 4-6pm on weekdays. If they start offering a happy hour, I could seee myself returning, but at the current prices they are just a little too expensive. read more

I love Pennyroyal! It's the perfect treat yourself bar. They know what they are doing and with that comes the ability to have play. The creativity is easily seen right away just with the cocktail names. You never know what the theme is going to be. My favorite was possibly the Princess Bride cocktail menu. I went recently and the gent serving us let me know it was his first day. Even for his first day learning the menu the quality didn't waver. Speaking of staff, huge shout out to Travis and Karen. They always keep things lively and are quick on their feet. Great conversationalists, even though that isn't their job. Being able to gab about nerdy stuff with your bartender is a easy way to build loyal patronage. You probably wouldn't think to ask about the food menu at a cocktail bar but definitely take a peep. This is a great place to go with a friend or two, or a date. It has an intimate setting that's just right for wanting to go out but not to a place that is loud/crazy. They have an amazing and unique selection of cocktails. I like to go out once in awhile and have a drink but I want something unique and tasty, not just a margarita or martini. This place definitely makes me happy with their selection. A drink will range around $11-$15. They have a very small snack menu, so don't go hungry, like I was. The menu had locally made (some in house), and fresh ingredients but my 4 stars comes from the drinks only. Service was good but not outstanding. I'm indecisive about Pennyroyal. The drinks are well made and beautifully concocted, but the markup on regular stuff (whisky neat, as I mentioned before) is ridiculous. Also, I wish they had Veuve or Moet by the glass instead of just Prosecco (the cozier, less swanky Il Bistro down the street does). Don't confuse this with your typical hotel bar. This place is absolutely date-worthy, far from sleazy, and great for low-key evenings with friends. What makes this place special, other than the beautiful drinks served in candlelight, is the staff. The bar staff, Jacob and Ben, are amazing, genuinely friendly, and will make you feel at home even if you're only here once a month. They multi-task flawlessly and seem to have the timing of checking in on every bar patron down to a science. They don't give my friends attitude when my friends want to order the cheapest vodka on the menu, and they'll happily chat with you about how the menu was crafted, how poorly your last date went (not at all speaking from experience), and similarly, they'll happily leave you alone, popping in timely when you're about three-quarter way through your drink. I also once saw them gracefully handle a drunk group getting (harmlessly) rowdy after a concert at the Moore. Headline: Ok wines, food that smells good, but the service sucks I was in here sitting at the bar; only here because we were waiting for the Moore Theater to open; and discussing food with my SO. There was a bar tender standing right in front of us, ignoring us. We ordered drinks (the list is uninspiring and over priced), and something from the bar menu. Apparently, there is a food menu as well, because the crab dip smelled great. But the service was so lacking we never got offered one. The food on the bar menu is almost non existent. It's only saving grace is really that it is convenient to the Moore Theater. I will be visiting elsewhere next time. read more

I can't decide if my favorite part was the decor and overall ambience, or if it was the fact that we could order off the restaurant's menu and eat delicious food while enjoying that ambience! Talking about the food... it's the best seafood! I used to live in Monterey, CA and I am pretty picky about my seafood. Add to that the fact that my second family growing up was from Spain and every family meal had some sort of amazing seafood dish (especially paella), and you've got a tough nut to crack! Started at Happy Hour. Not sure when I left. So I must have had a really good time. First off, Vesper is on the HH menu. Dangerous. Awesomely dangerous. I mean, vodka+gin+splash of Lillet. For snacks, we order the truffle fries. Always order the truffles fries. Also ordered the mac & cheese, olives & pickles, steamed clams, and salmon caesar. M&C - decent. Would have liked some more crumble to break up the texture a little bit. Decent for a HH special. O&P - I'm not and olives person, but I did nibble on some pickles. Pairs well with cocktails. Steamed clams - pretty yummy. Loved the big bacon bits. Totally finished the whole thing. Salmon caesar - way more smoked salmon than expected. Just because this bar is attached to a hotel, don't call it a hotel bar. Hotel bars are stuffy and the bartenders don't know how to make proper drinks. Pennyroyal is a legit bar attached to a legit hotel where the bartenders know exactly what they're doing. The ambiance is chill and it feels like a lounge and not like a stuffy hotel bar. The cocktails are creative so they aren't ones that you can get at any other bar. Yes, it's one of those craft cocktail spots so if you like basic cocktails this isn't your place. They can probably make your basic cocktail but why would you come here for that? You should come here and try something new. The bartenders were cool and gave us great recommendations for other local places outside of the downtown area. Stopped in for drinks, so all I can say about the food is that it looked and smelled good. The drinks were good. We had the local g/t which comes as a kit that you put together yourself, which was actually kind of nice. The service was good and the bartender knowledgeable. A great, cozy spot to grab a drink for happy hour! My company often does group happy hours here, and last night I decided to pop in with a friend for a quick glass of wine after work. It's a large space, but feels intimate with several two-top tables and a selection of armchairs and couches to settle into. They have good happy hour specials, $5 wine and a selection of snacks to much on (specialty fries and the like). Centrally located with friendly bartenders and good drinks! read more
