Sat at the end of the bar. Bartender was wandering around, tidying up. No acknowledgement of me being there. He eventualy started chatting with two women at the bar. Then mixed them drinks after (a) sniffing the boxed juice he got from the cooler and (b) picking up the mixing tumbler with his fingers inside it. Mixed bag. It took a while to get the bartender's attention, but when we did he was fairly attentive. Beverages were tasty. Food was tasty but took FOREVER which was an issue. We ordered fries and mixed nuts. That's all. After 45 minutes of waiting, my friend went to cancel our order as we had to get to the show next door only for the bartender to be like "oh yeah, the kitchen's been like that all night". That would have been nice to know when we ordered. Our fries came out during this exchange and to the bartender's credit were comped and were delicious. I only wish we could have taken our time to enjoy them properly. Hoping this was just an off night. I have to say these are some of the best fries I've ever had. The Parmesan cheese is so fluffy and light it's like you have clouds on your fries. The fries here are perfectly cooked. The proper amount of crisp and not oily at all. It's hard to believe these are fried. The combination of the fries, the sauce, and that parmesan cheese make this the perfect appetizer. I made myself sick I couldn't stop eating them. At the price point it makes you wonder what you're going to get. Is it worth the $14 bucks that is a toss up. read more

Black Hole Sun is a penicillin rif with splash of black squid ink that creates dramatic presentation and really subtle savory hint. Ready or Not is usually made with Beefeater but since I'm not a fan, the friendly server was happy to sub it out- yum! They share a kitchen with the other restaurant on property and the menu is pretty similar We split a bunch of plates: oysters, truffle fries, local greens, and the scallop entree were all good. It's too bad the management has decided to tack on an unethical, surprise 5% "service" charge, rather than just raising their (already astronomical) menu prices so they can afford to pay their excellent staff a living wage - as required by law. PennyRoyal is a cute little bar on the corner of Virginia and 2nd on the first floor of the Palladian Hotel. It's dark and cozy, and offers excellent drinks, as well as food from the attached Shaker + Spear restaurant. The service is always fantastic, and there are plenty of tables or cozy couches and squashy chairs to relax in. It would be a great place, if not for the "service" charge (that isn't indicated on the web site menu). I won't be back, as long as that stays. But since it's not listed on the web site, how will I know? Well, disrespecting neighborhood customers and hard working employees has lasting consequences, doesn't it? read more

Some friends and I were planning to get dinner at Shaker & Spear but it was going to be an hour wait for a table on a Tuesday but instead we were able to get the same menu at their bar next door: Pennyroyal. So we did that and there was no wait at all. I ordered the chargrilled burger ($16) and upgraded to the truffle parmesan fries ($2 extra) and let me tell you: totally worth the extra cost! Fries are my kryptonite and these are some of the best fries I've had in a while. The burger itself was already really good with all the bacon and the chargrilled patty but the fries took it over the top. I'm definitely glad I got this burger and I'd get it over and over again. For drinks I ordered the old fashioned ($11) which was slightly sweet compared to other old fashioneds I've had and not bad at all. I liked it a lot and ended up ordering it again. Then my party of three shared the "initiation's over, time to join the club" drink ($36) that serves 2-4 people. It's also on the sweeter side but with these flaming shareable drinks they tend to be on the sweeter side to hide all the strong alcohol. Our waitress was also great! My friend asked her if she'd recommend the burger or the pork chop more and she went on and on about the pork chop and I thought it was so cool! He did get the pork chop and really liked it. Went to Pennyroyal for a drink before a show. We sat at the bar top by the door for 40 minutes without any acknowledgment we were there, despite the waiter walking by multiple times. The bartender was rude when we asked if we could at put our drink order in knowing we wouldn't have our drinks made immediately. She snapped at us stating the waiter would get to us when he got us. Not to mention the same waiter just got done literally yelling at another customer who was also waiting to order. We are reasonable people & understand busy nights however the fact we were ignored with the server standing right next to us multiple times in the forty minute span, we ended up leaving. In town attending a conference, we couldn't find anywhere that could seat 11 and be able to give us separate checks for our expense reports. Jon, the bartender was great. They had open sitting outside that was able to seat our whole party. Food was amazing, I had shrimp risotto and street corn. The street corn was amazing. The risotto was really good, the shrimp was nothing special. If I were to reorder, I would not add the shrimp next time. My coworkers got the steak which was amazing. We wandered in and found a table, although it was pretty busy for a Wednesday night. The oysters were tasty. We also ordered the shrimp w/ chorizo, however there was literally 2 tiny pieces of chorizo on the plate....maybe they were running out? Lovely little speakeasy lounge! I didn't think they'd be busy on a Sunday evening but I was mistaken! Wanting to have dinner with friends from London at Shaker and Spear, I quickly learned that that requires a reservation but that their full menu is served at Pennyroyal just upstairs! We were able to snag a table just as a couple of folks were taking off. Cue a lovely dinner and enjoyable space for catching up. My friend and I each ordered the coconut scallop crudo (pure perfection) and agreed it was not like we had expected it would be - it was much much better! The others ordered the rockfish, which I tasted and agreed was divine! They perfectly paired the fish with the gnocchi and asparagus. I also ordered the burrata - this was wonderful except it was difficult to eat the artichokes (sunchokes) - I tried to eat them but feared I might choke! I ended up leaving a wad of chewed up artichoke on my plate as there was nowhere else for it to go :-/ That was the only oddity of the evening. The ambiance in this hotel lounge was lovely as was the service. I would definitely come back here in lieu of S&S in the future! It is a great spot! read more

I came to this place, accidentally had a medical episode, and they took good care of me - and the food and drinks were super good, too. I went to the Pennyroyal about a month after neck surgery, long after I'd gotten an OK from my doctor for light daily activities. They got us in on a busy Saturday night despite us having no reservations, and changed our seats to a couch when I asked if there was anything available with back support. They were super accommodating to us. My husband ordered a drink with sambuca, which I tried a sip of, and we both loved it despite hating sambuca (call us gluttons for punishment) - great mixology at work, we were very happy and impressed. We ordered the half-chicken from Shaker + Spear next door to split, since I wasn't feeling very hungry. The night took a turn for the worse and I unfortunately briefly lost consciousness before our food arrived. EMTs had to rush in and revive me. The Pennyroyal staff cleared the tables near mine, and I felt "comfortable" having my episode exactly where I was. I didn't feel rushed or humiliated, I was able to just focus on getting better on that comfy-ass couch. For being out in public, it really was the ideal place for something like this to occur. 10/10 couch, would faint on again (just kidding, I've already traumatized these poor people enough). Despite already accommodating us to a HUGE degree, they also comped our bill, gave us the chicken to go, and told my husband they hoped we'd come back again when I'm feeling better. It was so incredibly kind of them. Normally I would feel too embarrassed to go back to a place after having 911 called there for me (well, to be fair, this isn't a "normal" occurrence for me at all), but I will totally be back to the Pennyroyal once I feel better. And I will make reservations, and hopefully retain consciousness next time. The chicken was also juicy af despite me microwaving it and eating it like an hour after it was ready. Perhaps my opinion is overly influenced by the lack of urbane drinking holes in SLC, or the fact I didn't spend an inordinate amount of time at Pennyroyal, but it seemed to be my kind of place. Dark, with dim lighting, there's a bit of a mysterious ambiance, and I never knew Pennyroyal was attached to a Kimpton hotel. It doesn't have that hotel bar vibe. The patrons were an eclectic bunch on this wintry Sunday night; dating couples, dot com unsociables staring at their apparatus, and singles. We were the "older couple," but we always are these days. The tattooed, "motorcycle mama" bartenderess was friendly, but perhaps a bit wary of my sport jacket and conventional attire. It wasn't a funky look, and formally dressed men give off a conservative, myopic vibe nowadays. Unfortunately, my Armani/Gucci clothes no longer carry any cache. I'm just an old dude in a suit. However, she poured my cocktail strong and handled my banter well. I wanted to return to Pennyroyal after dinner, but my wife was tired. Thus, we walked a little bit in Belltown and returned to our hotel across the street from Lake Union. I hope I get to spend more time at Pennyroyal. BTW, it would make a great date spot. read more

Anna, mixologist extraordinaire, prepared a concoction when I mentioned I wanted a digestif. She is extremely knowledgeable in all sorts of liquors. She is also very friendly and very easy to converse with. She prepared a no name drink, which I will now call "Anna's Concoction" that will blow your mind. She was orginally a structural engineer, and gave up the ridiculous 9 to 5 to be a free spirit. You can see her spirit flow from serving drinks. She is amazing. We as a group of 7 people came here on Saturday evening and the place had some people but not crowded. The place is clean, bright, and modern. The location is easy to spot, street parking was also easy that night in that area. We sat at the dining table, there were other tables and some people sat at the bar. Service was slow because there was only one guy handling the entire floor - Jacob, the mixologist with a killer 'stache. He's such an awesome dude but between making drinks, taking orders at both dining and bar areas, delivering drink to the tables, bringing check etc; he was obviously overwhelmed with tasks and kept apologizing for the wait. So even though the service was slow, he made sure you felt acknowledged and didn't feel ignored. We came for the drinks and only ordered the truffle fries since we just came from a late lunch and were heading to dinner afterwards. The drinks were enjoyable, they were refreshing and tasted unique. We did not like the Bound-and-Hagged drink that came in a giant bowl, it did not taste good that day and we couldn't drink it at all. I know they used to have a similar drink called Trouble that people seemed to like, but this one I definitely would pass. The highlight of the evening was when Jacob called us to the bar when he was making the Fire Infusion drink. It was entertaining to watch him work with the fire, smoke, the ingredients and techniques. He explained the process, it was really cool. But then when we sipped into the drink, I was so so so surprised. I need another word to describe it, it's a level above amazing. I just can't even. It was supposed to be a drink ordered by my friend but I didn't want to give the drink back to him after I took a sip! So here's what we ordered: - Truffle Parmesan Fries $9. Yummy. Basically you can never go wrong with truffle fries. - Bound-and-Hagged: beefeater gin, del maguey vida mezcal, OJ, lime, honey-ginger, firewater bitters, mint. A $32 frozen drink meant to be shared between 3-4+ people. Our least fave. - Lion's Tail $9 (happy hour menu): barrelhitch bourbon, st. elizabeth allspice dram, lime, angostura bitters.. this one is quite good. - Snow Leopard Martini $12: the cucumber flavor is kinda strong in this one. - Batch 206 GT $12: gin and tonic with lavender and cucumber. Great balance with the floral flavor. - Dealer's choice rittenhouse rye fire infusion $17: rittenhouse rye, st germain, apricot, lime, simple syrup, bitters. Seriously amazing. Bursting flavors that taste like a drink of a God or some kind. The bill did come a little high which was about $105 excluding tax and tips. But honestly, if we didn't order the $32 drink, I feel that the cocktails for $12ish are still on par with other good bars I've been to; and even though the fire infusion cocktail cost $17, but seriously it was worth it. I definitely would come back and reorder that drink again and again, although when I look at their Facebook page, they rotate their drink menu ever so often that there's still so many drinks that I'd like to try as well. Great drinks, but they come at a price. Sitting away from the bar service was almost non-existent. So I have mixed feeling about this place. While the drinks were amazing, you did have to fork-up $16.00. I know the mixed-drink craze in Seattle is happening, but you can find a number of places with equally amazing drinks in the $10-12 range. I thought Frolik lost their minds with 14 dollars drinks, but I guess the drink prices go up according to the housing market. Had service been better, I would have said a solid 3 star, but if you are spending that much on drinks you expect the same in service. I truly think sitting at the bar would have been a completely different experience. If I find myself down here mid-week I would give them a try again. Anyhow, our waitress was nice and quick with the drinks, but then you had to find her. At one point, I made my way to the bar, but out of nowhere she appeared to take my order. While being small and cozy, it was especially loud during a busy Saturday night. Someone else's review hit the nail on the head, it is a hotel lobby bar with the same high-prices you find at all hotel lobby bars. I don't like writing negative reviews but I would not go back there again. Save your money. Better service at a drive bar. The atmosphere is nice, however the the server we had completed ignored us. There was a large table next to us and two other smaller tables. In other words, the bar wasn't busy. The larger table looked like a bunch of "tech guys" and the server was very attentive to them because they probably were going to leave a bigger tip. I thought it was rude. We waited awhile before someone even came over to get us waters or acknowledge us. Dined here before a show at The Moore theater. The food is over priced and mediocre. My French 75 was made with old, flat Prosecco - zero bubbles. We ordered the crab/shrimp Louie which was mostly greens and the smash burger which was completely charred and tasted burnt. I asked for extra pickles on the burger and the waiter said the table next to us said hold the pickles so no problem to add extra pickles. When we received the bill there was a $2.00 charge for aioli. I told the waiter I did not order aioli and he said the chef made him charge extra for the pickles (4 small slices) and that is how he had to add it to the bill. I told him he should have told me it was going to cost an additional $2. We won't go back as there are so many better places to eat in Seattle. read more

I really love this place! Probably one of my favorite dinner/bar place in Belltown. Love the atmosphere, the service, and the menu. When I first visited Pennyroyal, it wasn't really part of the plan. My friends and I were going to go to Shaker + Spear, but was told that it was going to be more than an hour wait since we didn't have a reservation. However, we were told that Pennyroyal has the same menu and we'd be able to get seated right away. We went over and this was definitely that right move. It was a more intimate dining/bar space and was able to get our orders in as soon as we decided on what we wanted. The waiter that was helping us gave us great recommendations and also made us custom drinks based on the types of drink we wanted. My friend wanted a sour drink and I wanted something sweet. She whipped up a drink and they were absolutely DELICIOUS! We ordered burgers with truffle fries and the pork chop. I definitely recommend getting the truffle fries! ABSOLUTELY worth it. The drink menu is quite expansive- there is something for everyone. I tried their Scientific progress goes "boink"? cocktail which reminded me of a White Russian (except with chai syrup and rum). It was delicious! Their cocktail names are fun and imaginative. I had their charred octopus w/ broccolini & hazelnut romesco. The octopus was cooked perfectly- charred on the outside and tender on the inside. I also ordered the spicy chips + yogurt sauce which is an affordable option on the otherwise pricier menu. read more
