7/15/2024 and 7/16/2024, I was in town for a fishing excursion with local guide Jack Trout. I slept 2 nights at the Travelodge Wyndham there in Dunsmuir, California. We were heading to Crater Lake and we love small old time style diners and this one didn't disappoint. Even though it's built to look like an old time diner, it kept the charm of an old time diner. The service was quick, prompt, and very friendly. Our food, wish I took pictures, was cooked to perfection. You actually get to watch your food being prepared. The chef was friendly as well and interacted with us while we given the atmosphere of a small town. We would definitely stop again when we are in the area!!!!!! read more

Great, old-fashioned diner, and the only place around that's open 24/7. Exit 731 off of interstate five in Dunsmuir California. This is where the union Pacific Railroad locomotive engineers stay overnight because it's very quiet. If you come during the night, look around before you get out of your car because there are native bears in the area. read more

Food was good, and price was right. Only disappointment was the 20 something dark haired waitress working at 11am 7/22/23. Controlling personality but not taking care of her domain. Examples: telling a party they 'd have to wait then refused to give them a requested menu while they waited. Interrupting my husband when he tried to relay a message to the cook, saying she'd let them know; she didn't. Informing us after we'd input our order via the app (instructions displayed prominently on every table) that they don't do it that way. Telling a party not to sit at a table she had not yet wiped down. You've got a good thing going but this woman is not a part of it. read more

I wouldn't even give it one star! Filthy bathroom and the employees talked loud to each other nonstop with the F word every other word!!!!! And when the employee came on shift he didn't even wash his hands. Never paid any attention to customers or offer a refill on drinks. Do yourself a big favor and find another place to eat. read more

Food is good. Service is quick and they have a great vibe. It's off the hwy so you probably will miss it.

The Reataurant is charming inside and out. The food is just amazing. I had the French Dip sandwich and a chocolate shake. My hubby had the club sandwich and chilly cheese fries. The service and the cook are prompt and welcoming. This place is well worth the shop. read more

For perspective, I ate at Penny's about a year ago @4:30am. The breakfast I had was tasty and the service was good. Today, 1/14/24, I had the same breakfast I had before. Here's the review: - Chicken fried steak & gravy = tasty - 2 sunny side up eggs = over cooked - Wheat toast = fine - Hash browns = mysteriously NOT brown, but under done yet could be mistaken for "sticky rice"! Service: only 1 cook/server/cashier running the restaurant Another friend/employee appeared, and boisterous cross-restaurant talk disrupting diners ensued I am from "the area," but will not return again. We stopped in for dinner as a family of 4 on a road trip. Food was great. The Cook Steven recommended the meatloaf. Chicken fried steak was good too. We loved our dinner and the service. What a fun little old school diner. Try the home made brownie with ice cream for dessert ! We'll be back on our next visit up North! read more

We were driving down into Redding after a day of exploring and were craving home style breakfast for dinner. So we stopped by and food menu was not complicated. Had exactly what we wanted. Service was fast and it was a treat to watch the chef cook. Ambiance is old school diner which added to its charm. We enjoyed every minute we were here. Good clean rest rooms too. If you're in the mood for below average comfort fast food and terrible service, penny's diner makes a great stop. Our waiter was rushed, rude, and left us hungry. The clear favoritism to regulars made this a terrible destination, no matter how much the history fan. I was so excited to eat at a themed diner, but there are not enough Elvis Presley posters in the diner, let alone the world to make up for the fact I waited nearly 30 minutes for a Reuben made almost immediately. Why have a self service QR code when a waiter can take our order and then blame mistakes on us? Could not recommend less! Save your money and your sanity! read more

Our family of four stopped in for breakfast while just passing through, and it hit the spot! It was pretty empty when we arrived, so service was very quick. Our server was very helpful in recommending their "Pick 3" menu item as a lighter alternative to my grandmother looking for a smaller meal. You can see the kitchen right from the booths, and we were very impressed by the chef's cleanliness & efficiency. All of us were happy with our food, which tasted great & portions were just right! A few *minor* things for improvement--we wished they had real maple syrup & whipped cream instead of the cheaper stuff, but we certainly don't expect it for a diner in a small town. It also would have been nice to have hot/warmed plates, but it's not really possible with the plastic ones they use. read more

We supported this place all thru COVID... This used to be a good place to eat breakfast or a dinner meal. Recently they lost some GOOD employees and today was the last straw I won't be back. To start off, I felt from the moment we walked in like we were a BOTHER... and very unwelcome, even though there was only ONE other table with guests. After bringing us water ("My orange juice is still frozen, can't give you any") We were made to sit for 25 minutes before the cook even bothered to take our orders. This while she fussed around 'busylike'. When she finally did take our orders, she was abrupt and short. She even commented 'Please Fire Me'! When the breakfast came it was the worst presented meal I've ever seen. A full cup of assorted shredded cheese dumped on top of my "Big Breakfast"... not even starting to melt.. just shredded cheese GALORE. The breakfast underneath was cooked OK but it was not appetizing in any way to be faced with all that CHEESE. Her serving method was basically to throw the plate at us. She then retreated into a private world of more fussing behind her headphones fully ignoring us for the rest of our time there. Left the bill and a tip (stupid me) and walked out. Won't be back. James was awesome, best cook I could ask for... nice move losing him. damn. won't try THAT again. read more

Sent my friend up there to grab a milk shake. Bath Sylvia was working, she wouldn't seat him. Told him he would have to sit outside even tho there were 7 other tables inside. We both ordered milk shakes upon me showing up. He got fries as well. Both milk shakes still had powder in them not mixed. Both milk shakes and fries given in "Togo" containers like we were not welcome. Another girl walked in for a room and barb threw her hands up and would not rent to the PCT walker. A group of 6 came in 1 last disabled, barb told them they would have to sit outside, and there stuff would be in Togo boxes because she's to busy cooking food, and checking people in and cleaning to deal with it. (They walked out) another PCT walker came in and asked if barb could break down a 5, so he could do his laundry. She could t help him and acted like it put her out of her way to help him. My friend and I grabbed our food and went outside to sit and eat as we seemed like a inconvenience after our stuff was put in "to go" containers. Same friend also tried to stay there last weekend on Friday July 30th He would not give me details but said barb really is a ***** all the time. I've called corporate personally Paul would not call me back, I left a message for the GM at pennys and she wouldn't call me back. A gem on the way to Mt. Shasta. We were desperate to find a decent place to grab breakfast when every place we tried was either boarded up or just closed. We saw the highway sign for Penny's and took the exit. Tucked away in the forest on the property of a Travelodge hotel is a former passenger train car trimmed in shiny chrome. The cook, full of personality and skills on the flat top, knows how to perfectly cook eggs over medium. Very few places can actually do this. Our meals were perfectly delicious and very fairly priced. The best restaurant experience of our entire trip. read more

Looking for late night food near Lake Shasta? Well you have definitely hit the right place! My nephew and I had the late night cravings and had found this 24/7 gem. We were greeted at the door by Alexi and her chef and they had made us a delicious meal to satisfy our cravings. We had ordered: Water - something about Shasta water that quenches your thirst Oreo milk shake - fluffy, light and easy to drink Philly cheesesteak sandwich with fries - super tasty Grilled cheese with tots - crispy, savory & cheesy This is definitely the 1950's throwback diner that was playing old school gems while having PEZ dispenser and "I love Lucy" posters on the walls. A cool feature about this diner is that the tables were next to the open kitchen, so we were able to receive the food quickly as soon as it was plated. Service was attentive and friendly. I loved because my husband and I went in for breakfast to a filthy dirty restaurant all tables were dirty piled with dishes and a cook telling us that it would take a while because he was all alone doing everything himself, which is how's it's always been run in the 10 or so years I've been going to eat here. The cook station was dirty let's just say it had not been cleaned in awhile. Knowing everyone is short handed we sat and even cleaned our own table. I blame management for this because your staff is only as good as you are as a manager and I'm speaking from experience In the time we were there eating he sent 5 parties of people away and told them to go to another restaurant in town about $200 out the door I will not go back for a while ps food not good pancake still uncooked in the middle read more

The Monterey chicken was excellent. Chicken was tender and juicy not dried out to leather. Lots of pepper, onion, tomato and mushroom on top. Yummy! Service is excellent! Both friendly and efficient. Pretty okay place considering the location. Beautiful... but in the mountains your not going to find lots of options. It's one of those rare times where I'll eat meat, really nothing else to get and I'm traveling. I got their version of a Philly cheesesteak. Nothing to complain about, it did the trick. What I didn't like about it where the fries. Yes the menu said crispy but burnt is another thing. (And it wasn't a one time thing, they were all the same for my wife and MIL) read more

Pretty close to the freeway Hopped off the road for a quick breakfast and found Penny's next to a hotel. Really cool ambiance. We were pretty early so there was only one guy one duty when we first came in. By the time we left a 2nd worker had shown up.
