We came to this location after a 6 hour drive hoping to get good customer service and some breakfast and instead weren't even given eye contact when we walked into this place. The cashier rudely tossed menus on our table and was not willing to give a good attitude. The other employees in there were also ignoring customers as they were being spoken to. Though we were seated right away we were not about to be treated that way by the cashier's nasty ass attitude. We went 5 minutes up the road to Black Bear Diner and waited 30 minutes all to have a very positive and friendly experience! I would NOT recommend this diner to anybody. read more

We stopped here for lunch with our dog on our way to Arizona for Christmas. Great service and excellent food. We were the only ones sitting outside which allowed us to sit with our small dog. Will definitely stop here again when traveling. read more

I was so pleasantly surprised by this place. I went in cautious, because the photos on Yelp seemed to show just-okay meals. What I got was a robust, hearty, fresh and hot feast worthy of the name "Hearty Breakfast." It's so much food and it's all so good. This place is so retro ambience fun. We stopped in after driving south from Oregon and with the highway modifications, we had to take an alternate route that turned out to be very simple and easy and well worth it. There were four diners in our party and we had: a hopped up hash browns scramble which was excellent and cooked to order to perfection. The French dip was the best that diner had ever eaten - fantastic. My hamburger and the bacon cheeseburger were both huge and very well made. No preservatives and dining room and restrooms were clean. Fun 50's decor. read more

Stayed at the little hotel and went into the diner to ask for extra sheets (the hotel doesn't have an office it's run out of the restaurant--which isn't the problem) one teenager was there drinking a soda and the lady running it was clearly not busy with customers. This lady looks at me (won't stop the fryer) and literally says "Honey I can't hear you--we don't wear masks here" A little shocked at the audacity. I came across this diner in a long drive from LA to Bend with my golden retriever Penny. The waitress was so kind and when she learned about Penny (who had just been diagnosed with cancer) she came out to the car to meet her. This is the worst customer service I have ever experienced. I came in on a Sunday morning at 10:00 AM to be told that they had a complete shift change going on and that they would not be able to talk to me/ get to me for at least 1/2 hour. There was only 1 other family in there. Who does a shift change at 10:00 am on a Sunday morning???? And then totally ignores the guests. We walked out and left. This modern, lovely diner is open 24/7! For a small town like Dunsmuir, that is amazing. There are very other choices of any kind to eat in Dunsmuir, especially breakfast, and Penny's is convenient since it is right at the I-5 exit. The staff were very nice and helpful to us, and the meals were completely excellent (breakfasts is the only meals we had). My 5-star rating is in the context of diners. Obviously the food here is not up to gastropub (or higher) standards, but it is a diner, so you judge it by the standards of diners. I wish they offered English muffins, but the sourdough bread was very good. The omelettes were excellent. Orange juice was a bit watery, so this could be better. Our event was in Mt, Shasta, but we were staying in Dunsmuir, so the location of the diner worked really well. Mt. Shasta is of course a bigger and much more lively town, but the breakfast choices are very limited, and doubly so if you want a full, cooked egg meal. So you might want to eat at Penny's even if you're not staying in Dunsmuir. read more

Stopped there on a road trip with my family. It was the only thing open for miles at that time of night. We drove up and the place was cool looking, very retro. It's some sort of trailer looking structure, but very clean and well lit. We were the only ones there and we soon realized that there was only one person working. She was the hostess, server, cook and cashier. She was also the phone operator for the hotel on the same property. It was actually very entertaining to watch her do everything. My kids and I were respectfully cracking up at the whole scene. We joked that she was probably also the Police Chief and the Mayor :) Their menu was pretty extensive, so we all found something we wanted. The food took long (for obvious reasons), but it was decent. Nothing to write home about, but pretty much what you would expect from a small Diner. I would stop again, if I was passing through late at night. read more

During these pandemic times, it is difficult to say the least for restaurants to makes ends meet, and at that stay open. We were staying at the Travelodge next door. It was wonderful just having a place that we could walk to and eat at. After reading some negative comments we decided to eat anyway. When we walked in the waitress yelled across the restaurant in a super crabby demanding voice "Can I help you?!?" (too far away for me to respond without yelling back). No one in the restaurant was masked and she had hers on her chin, which probably meant "I don't believe in this but they are making me do it." She said they were full and when I asked if we could sit at the empty tables outside she said it would have to be to go, that she wouldn't serve us out there and we'd have to wait 20 min to put our order in. We would have been fine with that, but the way she said it was so rude and like she was trying to get rid of us that we just left. I went to this place a year or two ago since it was the only place open at 2 AM. And I will never forget it. There was some type of bug crawling around in my and they were hesitant to replace it. I don't expect staff to be happy and bubbly all the time but these people just seemed like they didn't give a shit at all. Later the staff's friends wandered into the diner, very obviously on some type of drug (Meth probably) and were very loud and annoying and even asked me and my girlfriend if we had any drugs we'd be willing to sell to them. I could go on but I'll leave it there and just say this was the worst dining experience of my life and I'm not exaggerating. For all I know this place is a front for meth selling or maybe it was in the past. After reading other reviews it seems that it's may only be the late night shift that's horrible but who knows.
