Found on Yelp along our route and had to check it out based on the reviews. It is located conveniently right off of I-80 and has the look and flavor of a traditional 1950's diner. I ordered the Ribeye Steak Sandwich smothered in mushrooms, onions, and Swiss cheese that comes with fries. My wife was intrigued by something we saw on the breakfast menu, namely the Chicken Fried Steak Skillet with two eggs over easy. We held up ordering shakes until we got a look at our food orders first. Our drinks appeared quickly and seem to never run out. My wife loves the Skillet she ordered; it was so voluminous that she had a third to take with us. My fries were crisp and tasty. The Ribeye Steak Sandwich was delicious; it did have a couple of stringy parts but I sort of expected that with real steak. Oh, and we were way too full to try the shake! Maybe next time. Everyone at Penny's Diner was very friendly and made us feel as if we were regular customers. When we were finished they even gave us soft drink refills...to go! There seems to be a lot of drama in the reviews of this place; it almost dissuaded us from trying it. However, we DID try it, and I'm very delighted we decided to do so. I had the three-decker club sandwich, and it was amazing! Few establishments still make a proper three-decker club, so you may not even have heard of it. Try it, you'll love it! I got *three* meals out of it! I upgraded to onion rings from French fries, but next time, I'm getting a whole order of the onion rings, as they were fabulous, battered rings well worth the price. If some of the negative ads make you wonder what's up, look at the trend; as of our visit, it seemed that most of the issues had been cleared up. read more

My husband wanted to go here as he had been in the past and said it was a great place to eat. Walked in and nearly every table had not been bussed. Maybe two other couples in the place. I wanted to remain optimistic but tons of flies, filthy floors and walls. The server was nice and the food was okay. About 30 minutes later eating my husband and I were both experienced severe gastrointestinal issues. I would not recommend eating in this establishment until it is shut down and throughly cleaned. I do not believe it would pass a state inspection. Will most likely contact the state inspector and file a complaint. read more

Even if it's been 6 months they still remember me and always have been extremely friendly. The evening cook was touching food without gloves on. I had order a burger. Then got an attitude about it when I called him out about.

I eat here maybe a couple times a year and in the past it has been better, but it has gotten somewhat filthy. Flies are incredibly common every time I've gone the last couple years. The floors can be pretty dirty. Just doesn't feel very clean here. The staff are always the highlight though. They're friendly and pretty attentive. Food usually comes quick and is pretty good. A tale of 2 crews. We were through here on Monday. Excellent service and good food. Mondays crew is the group of ladies that I've seen here when I've come through in the past. Coming through here today (Thursday) there were four orders ahead of us. The cook made one order at a time. No multitasking. One order at a time. To his credit he was the most motivated person working here. Four people standing around the back doing nothing. The guy brought out our bill before our food was even cooked and never brought utensils or napkins. We considered walking out and honestly the next time if I see this crew we won't even bother to be seated. The manager spent most of the time we were in the restaurant sitting at the desk by the register. After ~645 miles of driving (Eureka Springs, AR to North Platte, NE), my wife and I picked Penny's for dinner. And we were glad we did! We had an assortment of typical diner options, but I chose a western omelet, and a chocolate shake...and literally watched the short order cook prepare it in front of me. My wife had a club sandwich and a malt, and she enjoyed her meal as well. It was associated with the next door Oak Tree Inn, and "sort-of" serves as their dedicated restaurant. Found out they also cater to all the Union Pacific train crews that pass through North Platte as well. Hey, it's a diner, not the Taj, so our expectations were set accordingly. Overall we had a filling meal after a very long day of driving through some crappy weather...and Penny's was our final oasis! We had a nice dinner and good service! 4 Stars. read more

I originally gave Penny's 4 stars as the service was a little slow. I didn't realize until I got up to pay that the two waitresses working were also working the grill and there were no other cooks there. I fealt like I went back in time to a little diner before my time. My wife, daughter and myself thought the food was excellent as well Hope I can make it to Penny's again, in the future. 2 different people came up to the register while we were waiting. Neither said a word to us. Finally we TRIED to politely ask how long do they think a wait is for 2 and the woman cut me off mid sentence to rudely say "I don't know, there's no time, it's whenever people are finished eating" with a nasty attitude. There was just one other couple waiting, not even that busy. The least you can do is greet customers and let them know what's going on. Cute building and kind employees along with great food made this a perfect stop while traversing the country. We got grilled cheese, a turkey club, and a chicken sandwich with onion rings, fries and an amazing cinnamon roll. Great conversation with nice employees who stayed after shift change to chat with us and recommend a park for my toddler to run before we get in the car again. The chef also gave my daughter a tomato so she didn't take mine off my sandwich. Very nice people are hard to find these days. Great meal! Thanks for helping make our day nicer! read more

We visited Penny's Diner thanks to the app "road trippers". This was one of the few "unique" restaurants within hours of travel to our next location. I had the all American burger with American cheese and chili cheese fries. My husband had the country fried steak, smothered in white gravy, with a side of golden hash browns, buttery toast, and scrambled eggs. Yum yum. Just typing it out makes my mouth salivate again. I saw some good reviews - and some ridiculously bad reviews. Clearly this is a quick in an out diner. If you are expecting to sit down and have a waiter at your table every two minutes asking you how they can appease you - you are in the wrong place. They have a lot of foot traffic and work fairly quickly and hospitality with what they are given. Small space. Good food. Ignore the haters on Yelp that were negative nancies. read more

After walking in the door, we were greeted by a smiling waitress and told that we could sit anywhere we wanted. We sat down and promptly made our selections. As we were sitting at our table waiting for our food, a National Weather Service emergency broadcast came on, predicting golf=ball-sized hail that would be in our area in about 90 minutes. While that didn't set fire to our britches, they may have started to smolder a bit. The food arrived soon after that. My selection happened to be the special of the day, a ribeye steak sandwich served with fries. I had all the typical sandwich fixings (lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, etc.) provided, as well as a selection of steak and other sauces for my choosing. I sampled a variety of these sauces, and while it was excellent on its own, it was outstanding when paired with one of the lesser-known sauces. My steak was well-prepared at the right level of doneness, and it was juicy, but not so much that the sandwich leaked. The fries came out hot and were nicely seasoned. The cheeseburger and chicken fried steak meals that I got to try were also very good. While there was a bit of tension after the weather broadcast, the only sign of it that we saw was the fact that we were brought our check as we were finishing our meal in case we wanted to head out pretty soon. After deciding on whether or not to get pie (they had about half a dozen options), we ended up getting a piece of Boston cream pie to split among the three of us. When it was brought to us, the waitress apologized that this was the last piece and that it wasn't fresher, so she wouldn't charge us for it. While it was a bit on the dry side, I certainly won't look a gift horse in the mouth and count that against them. Everything that we had was quite good, and I would be happy to return in the future. I would like to thank the people of Yelp for pointing me to these little restaurants; without it we would be stuck hopping from one fast food joint with a roadside sign to another along our cross-country trek. read more

So, for I think the 2nd time ever I ended up in North Platte for my layover for the night. That's what it's called in truck driving when the feds make you stop and rest ;-) Anyhow, I went over to Pennys for dinner based on very good Yelp reviews. Well, it was good but not great. I got a typical cheeseburger with fries platter. I've had better burgers, "much better" but, I've also had many that were a lot worse. There was just one guy working in there as the host, cashier, cook, busboy... You get the picture. He was completely alone! Luckily for him it was only one other table, and then myself. Based on the wonderful reviews of this place, I expected it to be crazy busy. I found myself wondering just how this gentleman would handle things if this were the case. Anyhow, the place has a nice 1950s type of atmosphere and decor inside. All in all it's a neat little place that I probably would go to again were my circumstances similar. read more

I was in town with friends hanging at Lake Maloney and we couldn't quite figure out where to have a late breakfast. We were hungover and needed a greasy plate. We knew Perkins was a solid option, but thought we'd venture across the street to Penny's instead. I was glad we made the decision to try something new. The inside had a classic diner vibe and you were able to see your food being prepared. I ordered The North Platter (obviously) and I was satisfied. I was greeted with two huge sausage patties, two pieces of bacon, two eggs, hash browns, and toast. Penny's is pretty much everything you would expect from a diner. Food was good, server didn't really wanna be there, but that didn't bother me. I wish I would have tried a shake but that really would've upped my bill. Great Hometown feel. Right off of the freeway exit. We came in and had a great experience with the waitress. Some classic burgers and the fries. Everything was cooked up fresh. I only wish that the burgers were a little larger. I think a double pattie would have done the trick. I ordered the Ranch burger which was great with a drizzle of Tabasco Sauce. Expect to pay about $8 per person with a drink. I think that's fairly reasonable. We went there at about 1am and they were friendly and great. The place is clean. And if you want to know the quality of the restaurant, one rule of thumb is to check the restroom cleanliness. They past the test. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to pick up a quick and tasty burger and fries. You'll finish every bite and you'll even think about ordering another one. It's good eats! read more

Penny's Diner is part of a concept that combines a motel (Oak Tree Inn) and a diner (Penny's Diner). There a several of these combos around the country. I suggest you look them up on the Oak Tree Inn website for future accomodations and meals. What is special about this, for you overnighters, is that the free breakfast offered by the motel is actually a meal voucher at Penny's. And it is good for anytime of day or night. Thus, at oh-dark-fifteen, I was able to have a free, made to order, pancakes and sausage patties breakfast. If I had wanted something else on the menu, they would have applied the almost $8 credit to whatever that meal cost. This is not what you get at most places that offer "free breakfast". The cook was a pleasant talker, working his way through college, keeping the place neat and the food good. Restrooms were in good shape. Service and food were fast. Pancakes were more generous than I could eat, sausages were cooked well, though I like mine a bit more crusty, they disappeared quickly. Good meal. Quick. Free. On my way with no surprises. Is that good or what! I struggled with the rating. Penny's is not near the top hard core diners that carry a tradition of flat top grilling forward for generations. It is a bit too corporate for that. On the other hand, it is a great place to have a tasty meal with some atmosphere. And as a motel breakfast, it can't be touched. Is it three star, is it four star?
