We were returning to Colorado from Nebraska. This place got a decent review so we decided to stop. Our server did not appear overly glad to serve us, and she was very curt. Our food came out at a decent pace and it was OK but nothing to write home about. However, our server seemed eager for us to leave and said she would bring the Bill and my partner had to stop her and ask for milkshakes which took over 15 minutes to bring to our table and they were horrible. She seemed displeased to take the order and quite frankly the milkshakes were abysmal. he probably tipped decently, but I would not have considering that I have previous server experience in my past. We really got our hopes up. Picked from all the restaurants in North Platt. Walked in, sat down at a booth, reviewed the menu and waited. Signs at the table with instructions on how to order online. Asked the waitress what our table number was and she said don't order online let her take your order, "the other waitress." 15 minutes passed and we watched 3 other tables being served, their orders being prepped to cook. Delicious old fashioned diner in an airstream looking building located right off the interstate in North Platte! It is a small space with limited tables, but it's worth the wait if there is one. I will say it's not the cleaned place I've ever been too but the food is hot & delicious. One of the best if not the best club sandwich I've had, I decided to get mine on rye (sourdough, white or wheat were my other options) and it was delicious, I added mustard to mine. Tator tots were great, and my husband loved his biscuits and gravy that came with 2 eggs and bacon. We also had the cheese sticks (no picture) but would definitely skip those. The food was good but the service was subpar. Very slow and although the waitress wasn't overtly rude - she acted like we were putting her out. I did not feel like the place was clean and the person on the grill kept wiping her hands on her jeans and then putting her hands into large tubs of food. It was kinda difficult to find, but not a challenge. The sign was small but visible, you just have to keep your eyes open. You seat yourself and scan the QR code for the menu, but order through the waiter. The food was fantastic, and the service was fast and kind. If you're looking for a diner in the heartland of America this is most definitely it. Don't let anything about this place fool you especially with how friendly the staff were in the us mellow diner. Their cooks are truly chefs in execution and delivering a flavorful final product. On top of that both the cooks and waitresses are full personality and some conversation (if they have a lull since they stay busy!) We had the omelette and cowboy chili burger. The omelette we choose was full of vegetables cooked to perfection and full of flavor. The burger was everything you're looking for especially since you know the beef used is the real deal being in Nebraska. It was "okay". We camped next door to Penny's and figured we'd try it the next morning for breakfast. Outside, it's a long narrow shiny diner. Inside it's fairly typical of diners. Not the cleanest (floor) but okay. The staff was very friendly. Coffee and water were delivered promptly. We split the Sunrise Skillet with Sourdough Toast and we added a Cinnamon Roll. This is a great diner and super fun in a silver bullet train! When we arrived, the place was packed with several groups waiting. We were lucky because there was 2 of us and there were two seats at the bar! We were greeted right away and decided on the Hearty breakfast, which would be plenty for 2. We talked with a couple of local guys along side of us and they both said this was the best breakfast in town. We agreed. Our food was served hot and cooked good. First off, they didn't have peanut butter! How are you a diner with pancakes, waffles, milkshakes, etc. without peanut butter!?! I was throughly disappointed. My waffle was very dry and plain without it. My sausage patty's were fine. My mothers both got omelettes and hash browns and they were very happy. The coffee was good. The place is insanely loud and you quite literally sit next to the kitchen. The griddle is about 4 feet away from you. I can't quite decide if I like that or not. Seems intrusive somehow. My waitress was a little intimidating, at least I felt that way. My mother Joan keeps telling me I was imagining that. Yes, I was imagining a feeling for the sake of the conversation. Parking is a little odd. Location is right next to a couple hotels. Prices are good. Bathrooms are ok. I'll probably find other diner options if I were ever back in town. Penny's Diner caters to railroad staff, and I've been to the Penny's Diner in Belen (NM) and really enjoyed the place. Unfortunately, this location isn't up to that level. It took 5 minutes before anyone stopped at our table, even though there were many more staff here than in Belen. I probably should have offered cash for a smile as there was no indication that my wife or I were welcome to there. The food was fine, as was the price. There were no decorations on the walls, like the Belen location has (to give you something to look at while waiting for your meal). I had started my quest for dinner at another diner in town and was seated at a dirty table by openly hostile wait staff (maybe it was close to closing but no hours posted so I don't know). I left that place and found Penny's online and headed that way. After driving over 12 hours for the day I could barely see straight by the time I got to Penny's. the staff was wonderful, they were over full and still made space for me. They let me substitute french toast for the pancakes, in my meal. Risp as I'd like, but they seemed yotally winning to make adjustments. They were basically without visible oil, pily taste or feel, which I found amazing. The menu seems a bit ge eroys w/ pancakes & hash browns. They also have non-pork sausage. Bonus. What is not to like? OK, no espresso. Like I can't live without that! The drip coffee was pedestrian, meaning, it doesn't overpower the food, and IMHO not a brew I'll be sorry for, after having those 2 cups. We were just passing through after a long drive and crashing in a mediocre hotel. The hotel staff pointed us to Penny's Diner down the road. I must say the place looked cute and novel. Outside like a huge metal trailer, and inside somewhat like a fifties diner. Great idea for a restaurant. But..... and it's a pretty bit but..... the inside was ehm... grimy at best. Lots of damages to the furnishing and the walls and floors. Lots of stuff on the floors and the kitchen... well.... I can only say it needs a serious scouring. The cooking happened right in front of us. The wait and cooking staff were polite, but seemingly uninterested or bored. It seemed like they didn't really want to be there. I ordered a sandwich, I can't quite remember which one, but it was kind of sad looking. Not bad for a sandwich while on the road. Yet, not great either. My husband went with the local recommendation of chicken fried steak with gravy. I must say the portion was huge. He liked it enough. I didn't.. but then I really hate gravy. So, it might have been good if you like that sort of thing. It took about 40 minutes after ordering for our 4 orders of sandwiches with a side to come out. There seemed to be 4 people working the restaurant total with maybe 8 patrons in the restaurant. We waited patiently for our food to arrive. While waiting, we noticed the abundance of food underneath our tables and the general lack of cleanliness throughout the establishment, including the bathroom. I tried the Penny's Diner in Rawlins, Wyoming and I guess they are all the same. Not especially clean, can be noisy and in this case confusing parking shared with a hotel. I had a hamburger and a chocolate shake. The hamburger patty was cooked right but real dry. But the shake was very good, thick and very chocolate. The service was good and the prices aren't bad. This place looks awesome. It's a diner in one of those old airstream looking rail cars. The look and concept alone is worth a few stars. Unfortunately the food was the definition of just ok. The fries were meh, the patty melt kind of dry and the chili, which should be the cornerstone for this kind of place, was not good at all. Worth a stop for the experience once but I won't be back. When we checked into the Baymount we were given breakfast vouchers for Penny's Diner. It was pretty busy in the morning but service was friendly and efficient. We were offered three items from a list of choices and duly made our selections. The hash browns were a little bland but 5e sausage and egg were cooked perfectly. Stopped by Penny's Diner during a cross country road trip. It's 3 short minutes from the Interstate, which makes it a great stop for those passing through. It's designed in the style of a Classic 50's roadside diner. You know the kind--all curved chrome edges and black and white checkers. Your options for seating are small booths or counter seating (it's seat yourself). We opted for a booth. My dining companion ordered their breakfast burrito and I opted for the BLT. The food came out quickly. The way the restaurant is laid out, you can actually watch them cook your food. They didn't skimp on the bacon in my BLT and the lettuce and tomato were both fresh. Their fries are crispy (they appear battered) and delicious. My dining companion also enjoyed his breakfast burrito, which was very ample and came with a side of hash browns. My one complaint would be the cleanliness of the place. The table was sparkling clean but the floor, seat, and bathroom were not. However, we went on an early Sunday afternoon, and while it wasn't busy while we were there, it's entirely possible they had been slammed all morning.
