Penny's Diner is part of a concept that combines a motel (Oak Tree Inn) and a diner (Penny's Diner). There a several of these combos around the country. I suggest you look them up on the Oak Tree Inn website for future accomodations and meals. What is special about this, for you overnighters, is that the free breakfast offered by the motel is actually a meal voucher at Penny's. And it is good for anytime of day or night. Thus, at oh-dark-fifteen, I was able to have a free, made to order, pancakes and sausage patties breakfast. If I had wanted something else on the menu, they would have applied the almost $8 credit to whatever that meal cost. This is not what you get at most places that offer "free breakfast". The cook was a pleasant talker, working his way through college, keeping the place neat and the food good. Restrooms were in good shape. Service and food were fast. Pancakes were more generous than I could eat, sausages were cooked well, though I like mine a bit more crusty, they disappeared quickly. Good meal. Quick. Free. On my way with no surprises. Is that good or what! I struggled with the rating. Penny's is not near the top hard core diners that carry a tradition of flat top grilling forward for generations. It is a bit too corporate for that. On the other hand, it is a great place to have a tasty meal with some atmosphere. And as a motel breakfast, it can't be touched. Is it three star, is it four star? We stopped here after staying the night at a hotel on the way from Iowa to Colorado. The food was great, and the staff was very friendly and attentive. Kitchen seems very orderly. We rolled in at 11:30pm after stormchasing. Heather greeted us with a smile, made everything to order, and every bite was amazing. I had the Philly steak, my friends had burgers--even the buns were grilled. Tots and onion rings were on point. So wonderful after an exhausting, long day on the road. Great place to get a real down-to-earth meal. Food is really fresh and wholesome, typical of the good ol' neighborhood diners of the '50s. As someone who worked in restaurants for twenty years and managed the busiest breakfast restaurant in San Diego this was the worst experience I could imagine. I wish I could review the food but my party was basically told to leave two days in a row by a lady outside in the back smoking. We still tried again going inside the second day as this restaurant held some meaning to my older family in town visiting, but were ignored and then told basically to leave. While staying at the Oak Tree Inn, I got take out from Penny's. I ordered take out, i called beforehand and was told to pick up in 10 minutes. When I went in to pick up my order, I had to wait at least 10 more minutes till someone would even greet/notice me. There was one server and two cooks handling the whole restaurant. The poor woman (server) was running around ragged. It was not terribly busy but at least 4-5 tables. The hash browns tasted better than they looked. I wish the price for iced tea was the same as the coffee pricing that is given with a meal. $2.49 is pretty steep compared to $.99 for a coffee with a meal. BUT beware if your hearing is sensitive, the acoustics are terrible. They played old rock & roll that we would have enjoyed without the clatter and banging in the background. We stopped into Penny's based on reviews from yelp. We walked in and it was smaller than expected. You seat yourself (in order to sit in a booth you must have another person with you). If you are eating solo there is bar space available! There is SOME room for bigger families but very limited. There was 2 people there the cook and one waitress. But surprisingly enough they were able to hold down the fort! My wife and I ordered a grilled cheese with bacon that came with fries. Everything tasted fresh. The reason I gave them 4 stars and not 5 was because the smell in there is pretty bad once they start frying up food. It's a small space so it's expected. I didn't have dessert because I couldn't take the smell anymore! The food and service were amazing though! Worth the detour, it's conveniently located right of the I 80 west! Enjoy! read more

The eggs were nice a flavorful, there was generous helpings of peppers, bacon and cheese and the hash browns were solid.
