What a great little find! I've driven by the place several times over the past 20+ years driving to/from Vegas and finally stopped for in for breakfast. It was a Saturday morning around 9:30ish and was surprised it wasn't that busy. We found a booth and saw we had to scan a QR code for the menu. OK, I admit, I hate that. Then they had instructions to download the app to place your order. I assume this was put in place for COVID. Finally, a waitress came over and said she'll take our order. Thank goodness! I ordered French Toast with sausage patties, which I totally prefer over links but it's so rare to find them on the menu, and my partner had a breakfast burrito. The food arrived fairly quick and it was perfect. I'm not into fancy breakfast foods so keep is simple and I'm happy. The breakfast burrito was HUGE and my partner wasn't able to finish it. The entire breakfast with coffee was about $40, which I felt was very reasonable by today's standards. We both mentioned how we recently went to famous SoCal fast food hamburger joint (not In-and-Out) and it was $30 for 2 people, and not as good. Cool little spot next to the Travelodge in Yermo. It's stumped as a '50's diner with music playing. It is open 24/7, and far better option than other all night diners. The cook/server that helped me was friendly and on top of my food order. I got there at 4:00 AM and he was cooking an order for 6 guys in the back. He grabbed my order, the breakfast sandwich, cooked it up quickly and got me on my way. I took the food to go and forgot to take a photo of it, but it was delicious. Stop by and check. When you get ready to go on a drive and you just want to get some breakfast and coffee and you walk in at 4:30 in the morning but the person behind the counter, the cook, is throwing things around and cussing under his breath and won't even make eye contact with you. He tells me to scan the QR code if I want something to eat and shakes his head like WTF, I just walked out. I'm not going to have anybody like that cook me something, and you could tell it was the last thing he wanted to do for me. My husband was a bit apprehensive with stopping here, but we're both glad that we did!!! The service was surpringly very good-we didn't know what to expect, honestly. The ambiance is setup like the typcial diner. However, as a woman, I appreciate that there's a bathroom for women (cis-females) and a separate bathroom for "all genders." I usually use top in at piggy shoes, but they were packed so I went down the street to Penny's diner. I've always wanted to stop here. It's a 50 style diner with table seating as well as stools at the bar. Service was very good, friendly and professional I had French toast combo with sausage. It was very tasty. On our trip home from Las Vegas to the OC my wife, my daughter and I stopped at Penny's Diner for lunch. What a fantastic experience that was... The place looked great, a nostalgic look back in time to the 50's/60's diners of old. It made me feel like a kid again, I know, I'm ancient... Next, we ordered from a menu with a great selection of breakfast, lunch and dinner meals. My daughter and I both ordered the Bacon Lover's Cheeseburger and fries and my wife ordered the Chicken Fried Steak Dinner. The food was simply fantastic and that's an understatement. I admit we were all hungry from the trip, but everything tasted absolutely delicious. My Bacon Cheeseburger was "Big", like Texas What-A-Burger size and had a load of big healthy bacon strips on it. The hamburger patty was thick and had a wonderful flavor, like it had been mixed with something else. One of the best burgers I've had in my life. Also, I have to mention the fries... wow, they were crazy good!!! Thicker fries, that were golden, crispy and delicious (I had to order a large box to take home). My wife loved her Chicken Fried Steak Dinner. She said the chicken fried steak itself was huge and with scrumptious mashed potatoes and gravy. It's one of the diner's specialties, so if you get a chance definitely try it! Finally, the best thing about our experience at Penny's was our waitress Melanie Griffith and our cook Antonio Banderas. Wow, these guys were FANTASTIC!!! Melanie, her real name is Teresa was so nice, sweet and her service was impeccable... and Antonio, (his real name is Eduardo) is a great chef who takes pride in his cooking skills. Thankfully, we had time to get to know them both and develop a friendship that we hope to nurture in the future. Focus here is on the diner food here. The actual structure and some aspects look like its frozen in time. Avoid the restroom. Lots of parking. Our server had personality. We sat in the back booths. They have some patio seating, too. I adore chili and this was a little thinner/soupy but was filled with a lot of burger meat and red beans. Service was questionable??! we had one order of the french dip and i ordered a breakfast burrito that was supposed to have what looked like chili.... came out with nothing on it ! When i asked for the remaining items that they show on their menu photo, the waitress said the menu constantly changes so we don't always have what's shown for your order..so I'll get you a side of gravy. She comes back with the gravy, we get the bill and she charged me for it! The French dip came out with corn beef, because the cook told the server i don't know how you want me to make a French dip with no roast beef. I was flying my light airplane from Arizona to Northern, CA and got stuck in Dagget overnightdue to weather . Found the the hotel nearest the airport and Penny's diner was next door. Open 24 hours which was a huge plus considering I got the hotel pretty late and needed to leave early. Ate dinner and breakfast at Penny's. Phenomenal service. Cheerful, friendly staff. Hidden gem...went to the old del taco place "Tina's Burger Den" and their water like was busted. Got sent to Penny's diner by then and food was good. Chocolate malt shake was on point. Ruben sandwich was the best ever!! The best sandwich ever. Chili cheese tots were good as well. Bread for Philli sandwich was so soft. It was good as well. Burgers were good. Highly recommend this diner. We stopped on our drive home from Las Vegas and we really enjoyed the food and the staff. Food was tasty, my boyfriend had the biscuits and gravy and I had a basic breakfast. One of the regulars shared his homemade chili, that was extra delicious. We chatted with the regulars and had nice conversations learning about the area. We will stop there again when we're driving to Vegas. read more

So after a great day at Calico and not being able to eat since each restaurant was really busy...we stumbled upon this diner. We enjoyed it a lot. The staff was nice and very accommodating. We were greeted immediately and told to seat ourselves wherever we liked. Many locals or frequent visitors remember the staff which I think is pretty cool. It's a smaller diner but pretty cozy. The food was good too. I ordered a cheeseburger with fries and enjoyed my food very much. Everything had a great taste. They have dry erase walls so visitors are able to sign the walls with anything which I thought was really cool. We definitely made our presence known on the wall to let everyone know we were there. The one server would go from bussing dishes, to taking payment, and checking her hair, to making toast. The cook would crack eggs, then rinse her hands. The food was disappointing, with pale flavorless pancakes and over cooked scrambled eggs. We will stick with Peggy Sue's from now on. read more

My sister and I normally go to Peggy Sue's when heading to Arizona. While Peggy Sue's is mostly fun for the shopping and lake outback, their food has just been okay for us. When we stumbled upon Penny's just down the road, we figured what the heck, what do we have to lose? Well, we went inside, and it is quaint and quite small, we had zero expectations. Upon sitting down, Eduardo greeted us and said there was a QR code to view the menu. I am not gonna lie, we both find it very inconvenient and ridiculous, but he was gracious and allowed us to use his tablet to view the menu. We ordered and ate, and we were both pleasantly surprised how great tasting everything was, and Eduardo was great! That was our first visit there. On our next visit there, just last week, we were taken care of by Carrie Ann and Emily and boy were they both just absolutely fantastic! They had a full house and the server doesn't even write orders down, and she got the food correct!! Between the two they cooked, took orders and served tasty, fresh food. We couldn't be happier with making the switch from Peggy Sue's (nothing against PS, it's nice to have an alternative). Fantastic service!! My only complaint is not having menus to hold in my hands. I mean, you're supposed to be an old-timey diner. C'mon. Get menus and I would give you 5 stars! We have recommended you to our parents as well.
