Got stuck mid way to Vegas and stopped by Penny's. super nostalgic diner and delish grilled cheese!

Was looking forward to having a decent lunch on our drive back to California. I should have known since the minute I walked in. Terrible customer service and waiting time. We waited for 45 minutes for our order and work just being the 2nd party in the restaurant. The food was also terrible, the fries were the only good food. Ambiance is lonely and unwelcoming. It's better to wait a little longer to drive to another restaurant. read more

Did have a chance to sit. Walked into an empty establishment. There was a gentleman sitting at the bar watching us as we parked. We walked in and the gentleman rushed out the back door. We looked around and said HELLO. A young lady came in from the back and said to have a seat anywhere. As we looked for a seat that wasn't being held together by duct tape, all we saw was dirty tables, seats and floors. It was clear that the place hadn't had a good sweeping and mopping in a while. We said thanks but it's too dirty for us. If the area that is open to the customers looks like this, I don't even want to know what the kitchen looks like. Hard PASS. read more

Stopped by here for breakfast while I was on my way to Ft Irwin. It's right down the street from Peggy's, so be sure to check the sign out front before you park! I ordered the Sunrise Skillet with a side of Pancake and a Strawberry Milkshake, while my bf ordered the Frisco Burger and Chocolate Milkshake. Both meals came out hot and fast. The burger was good and comes on sourdough bread. The skillet tasted great and was quite fulfilling, especially since I was starving from the long drive. The pancake was uh...hmmm. I don't know if it was the pancake itself or the syrup, but it tasted stale. I took two bites and then had my bf take a bite to see what was off. We ended up not finishing it. Milkshakes were decent and comes with extra on the side. We ended up taking ours to-go. read more

We were staying at the hotel right next to this diner, so we figured we would check it out. If you're staying at the hotel next door, the hotel will give you a coupon for a few dollars off also. I ordered their chicken fried steak meal. It came with two sunny-side up eggs, gravy, and hash browns. The food was good, but a bit on the greasy side, so typical diner food. The waitress we had was very nice and friendly too. For a diner in the middle of nowhere, it's definitely a good spot for cheap food that tastes good. read more

Penny's rocks! Don't be fooled by all the signed for that Peggy Sue restaurant. Go here instead! The food here is so good. I've only ever had breakfast, which they serve all day. This is a 24 hr place. The Skillet is sooooo delicious. The perfect mix of sausage, grilled veggies and perfectly cooked hash browns with over medium eggs. Delicious. Did I say that already? We usually stop at Peggy Sues Diner. However, after reading reviews, we decided to try Penny's. We were not disappointed. Bacon-- the best I've ever had! Crispy but not burnt. Eggs over medium--perfect! Sausage, pancakes, and hash browns-- all good! The only drawback was the service. We were there a good hour. BUT it was Easter and there was only one cook and one waitress. If you're driving to California from Vegas, we've all passed the many signs for Peggy Sue's. Well instead of turning left, make a right to Penny's! So what if they don't advertise along the highway. The service and food are better. We were greeted with amazing service. The waitress was so friendly that I felt like a regular. The diner itself is cute with the throwback to the 50's. I ordered the Sunrise Skillet which consisted of a bottom layer of hash browns, choice of meat, onion, mushrooms, tomato, peppers and jalapeños. It's then topped with 2 eggs any style with a side of toast or pancake. It's full of ingredients that enhance the flavor. It wasn't overly large which means I didn't overeat. Perfect since I was sitting in the car. My husband ordered the Ranch Breakfast which included chicken fried steak, eggs, hash browns and toast or pancake. The gravy was filled with sausage. Of course I had to try a bite. The sausage made the gravy tasty. My hubs finished the plate so I think he enjoyed it as well. It was definitely a good place to stop and stretch your legs. read more

My husband ordered the skillet, when she put it on our table we both looked at each other because it was half the size in the picture on the menu. We are at Peggy Sue's for lunch and Penny's was better in every respect. The service, the food and the cleanliness were all much better.

This was in the motel's parking lot. Wow was I lucky. Dirt food it is not. But tasty it is. I did a chicken and waffles and a chocolate malt. The food was perfect, even the side of fries. The malt was okay but missing that kick of tasty malt. So if I was just ordering a shake it would have exceeded my expectations. read more

Great little find right off the 15 freeway on the way home from Las Vegas. Cook and waitress handle the place. They were both very friendly and the food was very good. Restaurant was very clean and well maintained. Definitely worth stopping robot from Las Vegas. I'll be back. read more

Great location. Total diner food. Everything is microwaved but it was great we could get delicious MC pies with whole milk at 1am!! Not the friendliest crowd around but also this is Northern California and not Missouri in the mountains. Unfriendly here is more about weed paranoia and not red neck deliverance type. Saw a few Trumpy Nationalistic types but they are sort of everywhere now. I always carry so I dont care about them. Worth the experience! read more

Spent the night nextdoor at the Wyndham. Had a down home comfort food dinner last night, and since breakfast was included at Pennys with our stay next door we had breakfast there this a.m. Overall the food was good and the service was pretty good. However this a.m. there was only one waitress and some of our food (the waffle) came out cold, and she forgot my toast. Dont think it was her fault, the place was pretty busy and we could tell it was hard for her to be at 8 tables at once. I wanted to try this place thinking they have to be better the Peggy sues. Nope you walk in the smell was bad it was like rotten eggs. There was an older lady on her cell phone she looked up called for her other Co worker named Nicole she kept yelling for her to come take my order, cause the older lady was on her cellphone trying to order a water heater for her house. Still standing there waiting for one of them to take my order. They had no customers in the place and this was Friday March 18,2022. See if you can make it all the way without stopping. Sometimes the stomach growls. We were always curious about the drab little settlement of Yermo, so we pulled off to drive by the Marine Corps facility and check for roadside eats. Were it not for the Marine facility, Yermo would have dried up and blown away decades ago. The obvious choice is Peggy Sue's. But all that signage along the highway provokes a contrary reaction in me. I will STAY AWAY from any business that pollutes my view with hideous signage. We were about to conclude our two-minute tour of Yermo when, wait a minute! Penny's Diner? The anti-Peggy Sue. The waitress welcomed us with menus encased in plastic. They were grimy and sticky. Why not wipe them down? Too busy being Yermo's best, I suppose. I wolfed down a big country breakfast with biscuits & gravy. My only gripe: I prefer a flaky biscuit to the fluffy, spongy kind they serve. The restroom wasn't filthy but their janitor has been slacking off lately. They apparently serve lots of truckers who stop in after mechanical tasks on their rigs. Greasy hand prints don't look so good on white wallboard. The interior walls of the diner are made of dry-erase material so patrons may record doodles, comments, and so on. Low-tech twitter updates. Who would want to? They were too busy staying ahead of the competition to bring a check, so it was up to us to approach the abandoned cash register and inquire about paying. An aging country gal sauntered over and took our money. The twinkle in her eye showed she still had some fight left in her. A few old-boy truckers probably look forward to flirting with her on the run to Winnemucca. Bottom line: Penny's Diner is at least as good as Denny's or IHOP but not crowded or rushed. They say it's the journey not the destination, and at Penny's diner that is definitely true. This is the perfect place to stop for a snack on a moonlight drive to Vegas. The food is great and the staff is really accommodating. They didn't hesitate to make us some off the menu stuff. Like when I asked for Disco Fries, the waiter said, "what's that?" I told him it's gravy and cheddar cheese on fries and he said, "how 'bout on curly fries?" He told us that if the ingredients were on the menu, they'd make us whatever we wanted. Now there's a man after my heart. It was perfect! Bonus: the walls are covered in white board and there's dry erase markers at the tables which is pretty awesome. read more

This review is just for breakfast. We had complimentary breakfast vouchers that were included with our room in the hotel next door (Oak Tree Inn) - sweet! The vouchers gave us a choice among several breakfast offerings, and we wisely heeded other reviewers' advice about avoiding the subpar (microwaved from frozen, probably) biscuits. We both got the eggs/hash brown/toast option. The food was pretty basic fare - thankfully not too oily, a decent but hearty breakfast to fuel our Death Valley adventure day. I'm not sure I'd return to eat here without free breakfast vouchers, but for a complimentary breakfast it served its purpose! read more

And two different servers and chefs on two different days can't remember/read/get a veggie substitution for fries right to save their lives. As a food sensitive person, I don't appreciate that. It's fun to eat at old style diners! We arrived during a shift change according to the waitress which caused a bit of difficulty. Also, some of the menu items were not available. This place is AWESOME! It's your standard diner, but this is the only 24/7 place for miles. They don't answer the phone much, but expect it to be open. Service is quite fast and all food is made to order right behind the counter. The biscuits and gravy is microwaved, but still pretty damn good. The coffee is alright-- free refills. I highly recommend the breakfast skillets. read more
