When my car was done getting an oil change, I asked to make sure that they competed the free tire rotation that is advertised with every oil change. They said no, I didn't ask, and if I wanted to wait an hour I could. Insanity. I go to check my receipt and their mechanic logged the labor hours for the rotation. So it's in their system as completed, someone got paid for it, but it wasn't done because I didn't ask? For a free service they advertise as included? Major scam! Ordered tires and received an appointment confirmation. Went in for the installation and they didn't have the tires I ordered. They tried to sell me other tires which I didn't want. Then they said they would find my tires and I could come back. Checked Walmart, they had my tires and gave me an appointment sooner and came in over $100.00 cheaper. I asked that the oil change could be done in one hour as I had another appointment 1.5 hours later to get the oil changed on my other car. I give these guys points for honesty and willingness to work with a customer to do what makes sense. It is my impression that they are not incentivized to sell what you don't need. They have worked on several vehicles for me with satisfactory results: tires, brakes, general maintenance. There have been a couple glitches and the guys stepped up to resolve. In my experience, best to just drop off your car for the day. A service appointment time seems just a notion of when it may get worked on. Less stress just to leave it there. read more

Went to pep boys for a nys inspection and 4 tires. was there for 3 hours. They never communicated as to how long it would take. Had I know I would have dropped off my vehicle for the day. I. heckled on them twice...1st time they were putting on the last tire...1 hour later and they were putting on the inspection sticker. They never cleaned the tires from whatever the use when they are mounted nor did the clean off the windshield from the residue left behind when they removed the old sticker. Disappointing experience. I am surprised they are still in business. I will never darken their doorstep again. read more

My husband pulled in here to have the mechanics take a look at his 2009 vehicle. The service staff at this Pep Boys location tested his alternator first, and discovered that it was faulty, and that he also needed a new belt. The repairs were done thoroughly and right on the spot the same day - even though he had popped in here without any appointment. We dealt with a very friendly and helpful manager named "Bill". Bill took care of some adjustments that needed to be made in a very timely and efficient manner, and with the utmost professionalism. The repairs and the customer service we received here at Pep Boys were wonderful, and although this location is somewhat out of our way, we plan to visit this location again in the future because they have exceeded our expectations in every way. read more

Pretty awful service at the Albany NY location. No one answers the phone. Showed up just to get a scan of my warning light codes. Should take 2-4 minutes. Told I need to make an appointment. Then told I had to leave the car for the day. Supervisor complained that it was because too many employees took off for vacation. Then told they couldn't get to it and to come back next week! Central ave location. Used to have great techs there. Not any longer. Shout out to Gene circa 2007-2010 in the central ave location and in the colonie location through 2015. Brought my car in for annual inspection and an oil change. Worthy to note I drive my car less than 100 miles per year. They pass me for inspection, while quoting about 800 dollars in services " needed soon" ( 500 in rotor/brake replacement; 100 dollars for a loose E brake cable; Serpentine belt 150) . So i pick up my car, drive it home no problems. Next time I go to get in my car.. the exhaust is LOUD. Get underneath the car, the exhaust is practically on the ground. Call them letting them know the exhaust was fine prior to inspecting my car. Tech on the phone says " we dont touch exhaust, you need to call Midas, not our fault" and hangs up. You do check exhaust, its a NYS law to.. and also .. thanks for the hang up. I will use Midas, across the street, for everything now. Never get my business again and I've spent THOUSANDS there. read more

These "boys" need to learn how to work with women. My inspection was fraudulently submitted at the Colonie, NY location. When I asked for it to be corrected, I was told I wasn't reading the paperwork correctly and I had read the mileage they include in their system, not what is reported to the DMV. I have a master's degree. There's nothing wrong with my ability to read. I had to have my husband bring the car in to get this problem fixed. They had no problems fixing it for him. I will never deal with this group of misogynist boys again. read more

About a month ago, I took my Audi to Pep Boys for an inspection. My car had been experiencing some 'wobbling' when I was hitting higher speeds, so I was also concerned with the potential issue. As my car is also an older one - a 2003 Quattro with over 100,000 miles on it, my wife and I were also concerned with how much longer the car might last. Ed and Bill at the front desk, as well as Dave who worked on my car were professional, able to identify, inform me, and address all the issues I was concerned with, and at a very reasonable price that allowed us to continue using the car. I drive a 1997 Mitsubishi 3000GT with 86k miles on it. One day the brakes felt like they just we'rent there anymore. Quite a problem. I assumed it was pads and was hoping it wasn't calipers. It was also about time for an oil change so I added that. I brought it in....staff was friendly....had to wait a second to be helped, but they were pretty busy at the time so can't hold that against them customer service wise. It was a caliper fluid leak and they said they had to replace the calipers as well to fix the problem. It ended up being $690 which seemed very pricey.... The reason I'm giving 4/5 stars is multifaceted. The manager ended up knocking the price down to $520 after talking to him a bit and expressing my confusion with the price. Additionally they let me leave my car there for the better part of 3 weeks (post them doing the work) before I came back to pick it up/pay without charging me a dime for it. They have a rewards program as well which seems decent. I'll be going back to them for future car issues. (Knock on wood) read more

12/17- Came in to drop my car off for an inspection.. again. Upon returning, they notified me that they had performed work on my car that I was not notified about. No phone call.. email anything. I was forced to pay for it upon threat of taking my inspection back. They stated that a bunch of bulbs were out on my car... which absolutely were not, as I would have notice beforehand, and also would have had a service light come on my dash. This is the second time I have received shady or poor service from this place. 12/2016- Scheduled an appointment here to have my state inspection done. Showed up and was met with a shoulder shrug and "we don't have any stickers" They didn't bother to call me ahead of time or offer any proper customer service. *As to the computer generated response below (designed to look like a concerned business owner). Responded to it, and they did nothing except for asking me to fill out some customer satisfaction survey, and bombard my email with further marketing. read more

On recent Sunday afternoon, our car -- 2009 Subaru hatchback -- lost an alternator belt in Albany as we returned to Long Island after visiting Rochester-area relatives. We called a Pep Boys shop at 1008 Central Ave. and, though late in the day, were assured by manager, "Kevin," he would try to help. Tow truck delivered our car (and my wife and me) to the Pep Boys shop at approximately 5pm, one hour before closing. Kevin did a computer search to determine correct number of replacement belt and then checked stock shelves. Unable to find the item, Kevin then looked through a crate of parts recently delivered but not yet put on shelves. After a minute or two, Kevin found the correct belt -- amazing for a car as old as ours. Mechanic "Dave" and a young helper installed the belt, did a computer assessment of all relevant parts (alternator, starter, battery) and said we were good to go. Remainder of trip was uneventful -- except for terrific traffic snarl on Hutchinson River Parkway in Westchester and Bronx -- and we arrived home safely. As I started to write this review I began thinking just how long we have been using this Pep Boys for service. We started many years ago when DeAnna used to work at Friendly's on Central Avenue. She was able to walk to pick up a car if she had something serviced. It started out as simply a convenient place for work to be done. Then I started thinking about how much trust we have developed over the years. Times were tough when we started out, we had some pretty awesomely awful cars back then. Through the years we've had some serious discussions on what repairs were simply not worth it. Sure, when the gas tank dropped off the Plymouth Caravelle or the Taurus with 173,000 miles started billowing black smoke through the streets it was easy to decide. But they could really have raked me over the coals after I was facing $5000+ to repair the '85 Cougar I had bought for $1500 less than a month before I smacked it up. I loved that car and actually started trying to figure out how to make it work. Looking back the guy could easily have waited until I came up with the cash and added a little here and there and milked me for everything I could beg, borrow or steal. But they were honest with me and flat out set me straight. And don't think that because we're doing better these days that we're still not dense. We just donated DeAnna's 12 year old Cavalier which had just about everything under the sun repaired. We started kidding ourselves that we could just put in a little and keep it running for emergencies. Just one more repair so we could sell the car and not feel like bad people to whomever drove away with it. Pep Boys did what they could to help, but made certain to let us know when we were being foolish. Yesterday I brought the Honda in after the engine light went off and for the first time in the eight years I have owned her she didn't start on the first turn of the key. They diagnosed the issue immediately, but made it clear they were unable to read all of the codes the computer was providing. They can charge for connecting your car to the diagnostic machine, but they declined to do so. There are so many people I know who get taken advantage of when it comes to auto repairs, it is important to have people you can trust. Granted, these days it is harder and harder for a repair shop like Pep Boys to fix everything, so many things are tied to proprietary systems. But why pay twice as much to replace a headlight or get a yearly tune-up at a dealership when you know you can trust the person you're working with to do an honest job. read more

I normally get service done at Mohawk Honda, but they were booked, so I decided to go to Pep Boys. I needed my snow tires taken off and my summer tires put on. It took them 2.5 hours to do it while I had to suffer through a marathon of Gilligan's Island on their TV. Two weeks later I went to Mohawk Honda for my brakes and they told me that Pep Boys put my tires on backward! So I had to pay an extra $80 to fix their mistake. Never again! read more

PLEASE READ ME... My daughter is away at college in Albany, 200 miles/3.5 hours from home, when her vehicle started having problems. Her vehicle was always serviced at Pep Boys here in NH. I told her to get it over to Pep Boys in Albany and have them call me. I get the call from the "service manager" who tells me that it is a problem with one of the coils. He tells me it is going to be $430 to change out the coil and plugs. I ask him why so high? He says that when they change the plugs they need to do them all. I say that is strange, they have never done that at Pep Boys here in NH. He says well that is what they do there. I ask for the service manager. He says he is the manager. When I press, he says he is actually a service advisor and the manager won't be back till later. I ask to have him call me to discuss. I totally lost faith in the Albany Pep Boys due to this individual; his terrible assessment/solution and his poor customer service attitude. I called the next nearest Pep Boys in Colonie and explained everything going on. The service manager there told me to have my daughter pick the vehicle up and bring it over there and he would personally take care of it. Which HE did promptly and at a fraction of the cost. If you need work done, go to the Pep Boys in Colonie just down the road. They will treat you right, unlike the run around I got in Albany. Between the stress of a problem my daughter was having and not being there to help and the lousy service with this Pep Boys, I will never have her return there. Maybe this service advisor will learn someday what it is like when someone tries to take advantage of someone they care for when they cant be around to help them. This is the most disorganized store ever. I was told the tire was not in stock, but another store had the tire and it could be ordered. I paid for the tire and service on 7/16/16 and received no call re the status up to 7/23/16. I called during the week with no success in an update and finally came back to the store on 7/23/16. Everyone was unsure of where the tire was and unable to get a status from the store that it was to be shipped from. I waited for over an hour with mixed reports that the tire may now be in store versus not sent. The tire was supposed to be shipped by UPS and the manager was unable to assist. I have 3 of the other 4 tires already installed previous. This was a complete waste of time and no resolution was offered other than possibly returning my money, which was useless because no other tire can be installed as it is an all wheel drive vehicle. read more

A couple of months ago, I was told by the dealer that I needed brakes, pad, and rotors. It was going to be a quite expensive, and I don't have a lot of miles on my car. I stopped into the Pep boy at 1008 Central Avenue. I explained the situation to the parts manager, Bill Lindenbaum, who was extremely helpful. Bought the parts in his dept. and saved a lot of money. First, this review is about the way Pep Boys' service department treats customers. I walked out without leaving my car, so I can't comment on the quality of their work. I needed an oil change and tire rotation and saw online that they offered this at a good price compared with the oil change shops I usually take my car, so I made an appointment online. When I got there I had to wait in their service line for 15 minutes. When I finally got to the desk, they found my reservation, but said it would still take them an hour and a half. I'm not sure what the point of their reservation system is. Also, they refused to perform the tire rotation as I requested. The tire store I bought the tires from and websites I looked at recommend crossing two of the tires (which are not unidirectional) when rotating. The person at the desk said they never cross tires "because they have wires in them." I don't even know what that means. Anyway, I suggest going elsewhere unless you have a lot of extra time on your hands. read more
