I may be in the Yelp minority here, but I am giving Pep Boys some love! Lexus began price-gouging me on silly things and I decided to give the dealership the proverbial middle finger. Quoting me $500 for hood struts when I can buy them myself for under $20? The list goes on and on. Enter Pep Boys for my car maintenance. Today was my 6th visit to the Berlin location and again I was exceptionally pleased. I've had my alignment corrected, serpentine belt replaced, oil changes, and today a new battery replacement. Brian C is always friendly and speaks in layman's terms. Thomas is fantastic also. I don't feel the need to bring my husband with me for fear of being ripped-off, lady-style. Appointment scheduling is a breeze, and my car is always finished quickly. They provide a nice complimentary inspection report for review prior to your vehicle's completion. I have never felt pressured to add on additional repairs. They alert you via text and email when your car is ready. Every car is unique as is every owner's experience with their car. You know, I fancy myself an independent woman, and asking a man for help and swallowing my pride is something that is severely hard for me but I needed an oil change. So last week I went to pep boys in Berlin which is the saddest experience ever anymore but I've gone there for years. I noticed my car was leaking a little oil, so I asked him to just peek at it to see if there's anything wrong... anyways, they did the oil change and said that I would have to bring my car back on Thursday or Friday to put some special dye in the engine, but they can't today (dec28th) because it's so backed up.. well all of a sudden my car was leaking oil even worse. I'm thinking it was new oil, so it's thinner. That's why it was worse. Then I had Doug my roommates boyfriend who is a mechanic look at it and he told me they never change the oil filter it has a old date written on it. and that's where the leak was coming from.. Decided to have a bunch of things fixed with my truck back in January. Spent $1200 for new tires, oil change, horn fix, and new door lock actuator for the driver side door. The driver side door would not open because the actuator was broken. On the receipt it says that the actuator was replaced for $200. About a month after they worked on the truck, the horn stopped working and I was unable to open the driver side door again. I took the truck back to have the issues fixed again. Jim, the front desk guy, took me back with the mechanic to show me the inside of the door. He then showed me a part inside the door which was not the actuator and claimed that they had fixed the door and something else was wrong with the door. I then noticed that the actuator was old and did not look brand new at all. Right then I had a feeling that the actuator was never replaced and instead a quick fix was used to get it working again. I was charged $200 for a quick fix instead of a new part like the receipt says. And, they were going to charge me AGAIN to fix it if I hadn't recognized and knew what the door actuator was. So once Jim and the mechanic realized they couldn't charge me for the door being broken he quickly moved to the issue with the horn. The mechanic claimed that they had fixed the horn the first time by replacing a fuse. The issue now was a loose wire and they were going to charge me again to fix it. I declined the offer as I was beginning to realize that they were trying to get more money from me in very deceptive ways. As I waited in the waiting room for Bob, the mechanic, to fix the door I overheard Jim ordering a new actuator for a 98 Ford Ranger. Which was exactly the make and model of my truck and the only Ford Ranger being worked on there. When I confronted him about it he denied the fact that he was ordering a new actuator for my truck, which was supposedly replaced the first time the truck was being worked on. I then overheard him again canceling the order for the actuator. After I confronted him about buying a new actuator for my truck he became very defensive and agitated. And after I confronted him I think he decided against doing right by me by canceling the order for a new actuator. When Bob was finished with my truck he informed me he had fixed the door and the horn for free. Even though Jim wanted to charge me for fixing the horn, Bob fixed it anyway and I could tell that Bob felt bad for me, and knew I was being scammed into paying more than I had to. Thank you very much Bob for fixing the horn. I will be calling the Manager Brian Cortese next week as there was another charge on my bill that I did not ask for and I am very skeptical that it was even replaced at all. read more

I've never had an issues with this shop. Tried them again after 2 years because I hated the old manager. And thank goodness they brought in a new guy. Just had some simple repairs done an oil change and a light bulb replacement. No issues at all and a very good price. Forget the rest of these reviews... prolly just disgruntled. Yes sometime there is a bit of a wait here but that's because they are BUSY. Must be doing something right. read more

Had a 230 scheduled appointment, 2 hrs later as I'm waiting my car still not being worked on . I got my keys and left.

I brought my car in to Pep Boys for an oil change as I have done many times, with several different cars in the past. Most times have been without incident. I got a call that my car needed brakes, rotors and one of my stress was leaking. Considering the cars history, this didn't strike me as crazy. My normal mechanic wasn't available, and the car need the work so I agreed. I was told a pick up time of 1pm. At 2:45 I called and was told it would be ready in 30 minutes. I was dropped off at 3. After some time I was told they forgot to do my alignment, and I just had to wait a bit. After 4:30, my car was finally done. The manager TC apologized for the wait and offered a free oil change. The next time I drove the car, I noticed that it constantly sounded like I was bottoming out. I called first thing the next morning, and was told to bring it in. When I arrived, the manager Brian barely spoke a word to me as he took my keys. I called later that day after missing a call and spoke with TC who told me there was an issue and they resolved it. When I came by, TC wasn't there. A few other mechanics were with Brian behind the counter. They were all friendly except Brian who didn't even say a word as he gave me my keys. No apologies, nothing for my time or money in taking a Lyft to drop off and pick up my car. I understand mistakes happen. But the way Brian behaved shows he's more irritated by customers rather than happy for business. At this point I'm not convinced the car is driving properly and I'm likely to take it another mechanic for a second look. Edit: A few updates: 1. Second garage did verify that PB did the work correctly. 2. Brain called me quite upset that I called him out. He claims he did apologize for the issue and he checked the tapes. I asked to see them, but with another manager like TC. He told me they would be in touch and I have heard nothing. 3. Brian told me he would have offered me a Lyft, they have a contact with them, I just had to ask. I had no idea this was available, so I'd have no way to ask. Brian also offered me and my wife a free oil change. 4. I have heard nothing from PepBoys customer service or Brian when I was told I'd hear from them. Shame on me,I should have read the reviews before taking my vehicle to this Pep Boys.I went in for a new battery thinking nothing major!! The manager Brain told me it would take his mechanic 15 minutes to install a new battery! An Hour and a half later he was finally done,I should have known something wasn't right. He installed the wrong size battery also did not install it properly causing a lot of damage to my vehicle. I was very blessed an accident didn't happen because it caused my vehicle to shut down while driving amongst other issues it caused,Costing me almost fourteen hundred dollars to get repaired. Dealing with management and the area manager was an absolute joke,so sad how this company could care less about the customers and there safety. I will Never Step Foot into another Pep Boys!! I recently had my car in for service at your Berlin NJ store #430. The date of service was April 2, 2021. I bought my vehicle in for AC service recharge and leak detection. I paid $159.94 for the service. I was advised by my service advisor, Ellsworth T, that my AC condenser had to be replaced. He advised that the charge would be approximately $1150.00. I was startled that this was necessary. Upon consideration, I called Ellsworth back to decline the service. I felt at the time that it might be best to trade the car in. Ellsworth asked me if the cost was a factor in my declination. I said yes and he then offered to speak with his manager, Chris Andolfo. Ellsworth then called me back and said the best Chris could do was $1000.00. I still declined. Today, less than four calendar days later, I called the Berlin Pep Boys to accept the offer, as I had reconsidered. I was told by another service advisor that Chris said that the offer was no longer valid. I asked to speak to Chris, who arrogantly said that the offer was only good that day. That because the car was in the shop, they had already invested time in my vehicle. I explained that I paid for that time, in the amount of $159.94. He further stated that the price was originally $1500. This was never quoted to me that day. In any event he explained, the offer was good that day and that I should have taken it then. I feel that your service manager is trying to rip me off. I am disgusted at how I was spoken to and furthermore, how he attempted to pull a bait and switch. I feel your company should honor the price that was quoted to me less than four days ago. If that can't be arranged, I will take my business elsewhere. read more

Just brought my car in for service on a flat tire.. was told it would be $20 if they can fix it. Fine. Hour and a half later I'm told they cannot fix the tire (okay), I need new shocks, and another back rear tire... costing $800. Mind you my car is a YEAR old and I just brought it to Honda last month for oil change and service and everything was in the "green zone". I declined all the services beside replacing the flat tire and still left paying $150.. insane. read more

Went for a "tune-up," unfamiliar with the whole process other than my google search answers. Tune-ups to my understanding change spark plugs, change filters, etc.; however I ended up paying $300 for them to change my spark plugs and a 3- step run rite fuel cleaning, but I was told that it was a 4-step when quoted and informed of the need for the service. Confused how I paid that for a tune-up that essentially only changed my spark plugs. Feel like that was useless and deceitful, should have gone down the street to get the service done as they offer far more transparency. read more

Ran in one night to buy some windshield wiper blades. Roamed the store without a clue of where to go. Walked past three employees, none of which acknowledged me or made eye contact. Found the windshield wiper blades and got all flustered trying to figure out which brand to buy. Finally decided to just leave when a fourth employee emerged and offered help. Hallelujah. Got my wiper blades and proceeded to the register where I interrupted a cashier (one of the first three employees who ignored me) and his friends. If I need anything from this store in the future ... I'll probably send my brother. Or just go someplace else. read more

They took my car off-site for service! My muffler was dragging, so I brought it the to the nearest mechanic that was open on a Saturday. That happened to be the Pep Boys in West Berlin. After agreeing to the service. I asked what time the car would be ready for pickup. When I arrived at the time they said it should be finished, my car wasn't there -- not in the parking lot or in one service bays. The service manager told me they took it someplace else to get it fixed! What?????? First, they didn't ask for my permission to take the car off-site. They don't have (and didn't ask for) the owners card or insurance card. There was no signage at the location saying that Pep Boys sometimes uses third parties to fix cars. And the paperwork I signed has the sketchiest language about such a circumstance. Quoting the six-point type -- "I hereby authorize Pep Boys to perform the repairs on this work order and to furnish the necessary materials and its employees to operate the vehicle for purposes of inspection, testing and delivery." In my opinion, taking a customer's vehicle off-site to fix it is a lawsuit waiting to happen. Be aware!!! read more

Terrible service. I went for an oil change at 3:30 on a Friday afternoon. Was told that it would be an hour wait. I asked what would be a good time to come back without such a long wait. I was told that I could make an appointment. He looked at the schedule and said that 6:00 was "wide open". Those were his exact words. So I made the appointment. I came back at 5:50 pm. There were two people in front of me on line just to check in. That took 15 minutes! Finally I check in for my scheduled appointment and he takes my information. I ask how long it will be and he tells me an hour and a half!! Like what?? I told him I made the appointment specifically because I didn't want to wait the hour before. I asked what the point of an appointment was. He said an appointment only guarantees that your car will be taken. Totally ridiculous. Go elsewhere. Anywhere except here! read more

IF I COULD GIVE 0 stars I would I will NEVER trust my car with these people EVER again. I went in to get my tires put on and get my oil changed. After two hours, I finally get my car back, with glue all over my tires, as I was driving home the car felt a little shakey, so I thought oh maybe its because I just had brand new tires put on. I parked my car at my house and didnt touch it till two days later. Today I finally decided to wash the glue off, as I was washing my car I heard a loose screw . And what did you know as soon as I tap it , it came right off. How could you not tell someone that you cracked their screw . And what blows my mind is that I have a car seat in the back of my car. If my tire would have fallen off I would have sued them for every penny... Now they cant say its my fault because I wash my car once a week and check every part of my tire to make sure they are okay . Way to go pepboys. Although the staff manning the cash register and floor don't want to be bothered, the service department at this Pep Boys is awesome. Very friendly, very honest, and quick. I've taken my car in several times thinking I needed a huge repair and upon closer inspection, they were able to fix it for much less money in much less time. Some services they've done for free. I've gone to this location several times for tire repair and every time the staff carefully explains everything that they're doing as well as performs all tasks with a pleasant disposition. All they want is for you to spend money. My husband had his truck in for a tire to get repaired. They came back and said it could not be repaired and he needed four tires. They were very adamant in trying to get my husband to buy four tires and spend over $1200.00. WOW!! Took the keys back and went to our local garage, that is only open on M-F. It costed us only $44.00 to plug the tire, were a nail was. This people are relentless. They tried the same thing on an older couple and they walked out also. Never again or would I recommend this place....Horrible. read more

Daryl, George, Ty, Casey and the rest of the staff at Pep Boys have been great in the service department. The rest of the store has always been very customer service oriented as well but I'm usually in the repair and maintenance dept. They've serviced all my vehicles, both personal and business and they've always come through for what was needed. They've always completed the work as promised and have even done some extras going above and beyond what other shops have offered in the past. Paid for three oil changes and nothing was done... Not one but THREE. My new mechanic says that it does not appear that my oil filter has been changed in three years. There was metal fragments in the filter. There was approximately 16oz of oil in the pan. I still had 1000 miles to go for my next oil change. There are no leaks. The area of the driveway where I park my car has zero oil spots. Now I have $2000 engine repair. Shame on you pep boys. You suck. read more

Had a 8am appointment. After an hour of walking around the manager said it would be at least two hours. I asked for my keys and to call me when I could get the work done. 7 hours later got a call to bring the car in at 5:45pm. 9 hours and 45 min after my appointment. the alingment lift was open at 8:45 and when I drove back to pick up the tires I dropped off the day before. several bays open. I would understand the delay if I just showed up the day of but had an appointment. I missed my daughters game and enjoying driving my car over the holiday weekend. Thank you Mr Manager. read more

Had a tire with a leak. Went to Pep Boys and Ty and the staff there fixed the tire (turns out they did it for free because we're reward zone members) and then checked the other tires. Turns out another tire had a nail in the tire and they fixed that one too, also for free. And they got me out in less time than they initially stated. Excellent place. I had my oil changed here and ran into a bit of a problem after receiving my car back. The oil lid was left off by one of the mechanics and oil sprayed all over my engine and car. I took the car back the next day expecting a bit of a hassle. Jim Taylor (store manager) immediately apologized and took my keys and he personally starting fixing the problem. They cleaned my engine very good, redid an oil changed, topped my fluids, and even put new wiper blades on my car. He also refunded my original payment for the oil change! Amazing customer service and I will absolutely be returning. Accidents happen, but they sure made up for it. read more

Called early in the day to see what time service department was open until. I was leaving on a road trip and my headlight blew out and figured I would get oil changed. They said no appointment needed come in by 7pm as store closed at 8pm. Arrived at 655pm right from work. Was told there was no way anyone could help me because he only had 2 people working. Had a previously bad experience when they told me there was nothing wrong with my car battery and two days later I needed a battery! Placed a web order for 4 new tires (not anything hard to get), appointment set for 2 weeks ahead. Showed up at 9 AM appointment, tires not in stock. Strike 1. Was told the tires were in stock at another local store, so they would send for them and they could be in by mid afternoon. I asked to reschedule the appointment for the next day 9 AM. Went in the next day at 9 AM, tires not in stock. Strike 2. Heard some excuses, all they could do was do the same thing they did the previous day, which was to send for the tires from that other local store. Was told they might be in by noon, they will call me. Well, it's now 1:40 PM, no phone call. Strike 3, Poop Boys. That was a tremendous FAIL that you pulled off. As an added bonus, throw in some uncaring, indifferent staff. I would be much more understanding if they at least showed some concern and urgency about it. But no, that didn't happen. I guess they were used to stuff like this happening, and were beyond caring. On both days, the store wasn't even busy. Not even half the bays had cars in them, and there were about 5 people in the store. They (mis)managed to treat a $600 job like it was a nickel. Just an aggravating, disappointing experience. I will not only avoid them for any big jobs, but I won't even be going there to buy an air freshener. If I should read that they're out of business, I won't stop for one second to ask why. I wish I could put 1/1000 of a star...Maybe if Manny Moe and Jack were exhumed and put behind the counter it would have been a better experience. read more

I have now come to this pep boys location twice in the last year to have flat tires fixed (it's right down the street from my work so when I leave for the day and find that my tire is about to go flat, the close proximity of this place is a godsend). Each time the service staff at this place have been awesome! The tire was fixed in less than 30 minutes last time, and today I was in and out literally in 15 minutes! Today I had my small dog with me and they had no problems with me having him in the waiting room with me, even though I offered to wait outside with him. And the best part - get this - is that they didn't charge me for the service either time. They have some kind of service perk program that I think I signed up for last time, one of those free things where you get bonuses for using them, and I don't know what sort of sorcery is at work but I wasn't charged a cent. I can't say anything for the retail section of this store since I have never used it, but if you need service I would HIGHLY recommend this pep boys! read more
