Middle eastern man with beard inside Caldwell location is extremely rude and I will never go again nor recommend anyone there. I made an appointment for a tire installation and he didn't call me to advise that he didn't have anyone available to do it. I drove all the way to the location with a flat just to hear that I needed to leave my car all day for a quick tire install! When I asked for my tire back, he just threw it against the wall and said "here's your tire" and rolled his eyes at me. I'm a woman doing this all alone, the customer service is terrible! read more

I bought a new set of wheels for my Corvette and just needed them to take off the worn out tires that came with them. That's it! Just dismount 4 tires from 4 wheels, which should take no more than 10-15 minutes. I got charged $50 which seems really high considering last time I did it at another shop , it was about $25-30 ($4 to recycle each tire and $10 or $15 for labor). Here I just got a bill for $50 of labor. If it took some novice mechanic 10 or 15 minutes to do this job, then what is their hourly rate? $200 an hour? These numbers don't add up. Seems pretty dishonest to charge double what a regular shop would charge. They may have gotten their money in the short term, but now I don't trust this place and even though its near my house I wont be coming back. Brought our vehicle in for a wiper motor and asked for inspection in braking system. Was charged an excessive amount for rear drum brakes repair. Manager authorized technician to tamper with our ignition system and disabled ignition with an unauthorized repair to our vehicle. When we came to pick up vehicle .....vehicle wouldn't start of course. Had to be towed to another shop. After an additional $250.00 in repairs plus a tow charge.... our costs for exceeded $1000.00 which is way beyond the $220.00 quoted for a wiper motor repair. In all of the years as a consumer I've never seen a more unscrupulous group of folks representing a major brand as this group. We will share our experience on a national level through twitter also. Caution to those in need of an honest repair center......rule this one out! read more

Thought I would give a local shop a try rather than go to Costco. Bad mistake. Was given an estimate over the phone and in person of $600. When I returned I was told it would be $750. Why? Certain things were not included which was not disclosed when the estimate was given. Bait and switch. I told them what I was quoted but they frankly didn't care, nor did their manager who was called. Loyalty means nothing. Save yourself the frustration and go elsewhere. read more

I have gone here several times. Employees are not attentive. They Couldn't care less about your issues. Can't even handle a simple oil change. I've only gone here because of the convince. I will be doing my own maintenance from now on. The final straw was a simple oil change. I return to my car with the fender smudged in oil with a lazy attempt to clean it. While driving home the engine started to smoke. They spilled oil there as well. Dear Pep Boys it's called a funnel. Took my car in for an oil change brakes and rotors all around. My vehicle takes conventional oil and without my approval I was given and charged (up Sold) to synthetic oil. Seems like a lot of up selling is going on and poor up front estimating. Difference between estimate and actual cost (no additional service performed ) was $200. Needless to say they lost more than one customer today. read more

I guess the best thing I can say about this place is that it's close to my home. so a quick oil change or tire change is convenient. in terms of more substantive work, there are much cheaper places that do better work. These guys must work on commission because every time i've had work or an estimate done, there's lots of up-pricing and salesmanship. I scheduled an appointment with Pep Boys in Caldwell at 8 AM. I arrived at 7:45, the manager Jose Luis Aguia told me to wait, he would be out shortly. Another customer arrived at about 7:50. At 8:06 AM, the manager comes out and tells me that there are two appointments at 8:00 AM and that I could come at 10 AM. I booked my appointment on line on January 11 and received this confirmation. Over the weekend I discovered a slow leak in one of the tires I recently purchased from Pep Boys in Caldwell. When I went to Pep Boys at 3:45 (after work) on Monday, I was told I could book an appointment for Tuesday afternoon. I let the service rep know I'd be happy to wait (they are open until 7:00) but I was told that wasn't possible. One star for being polite and professional. One star for being quick, which is removed because they are too quick. I've had to go to this pep boys more times in the past year than in all my years of driving. I'm not sure what they are doing back there but it's problem after problem. I was surprised to see all of the bad reviews here. I brought my car in because my tail light was out. The staff member was awesome. He came out and looked at my car while I turned my lights on and my brakes on to see which light was out. Then he found the appropriate light and changed it for no additional cost! I've been here twice and won't be returning. The first time, I had a noon appointment for an oil change and my car wasn't ready until 6:30 PM. They don't honor or prioritize appointments... at all. The second time, I went in for serious engine/transmission issues (also with an appointment) and left with a fixed air conditioning that I didn't ask for. I should have looked at previous reviews before coming here. I took my car here for brake work. They completed very quickly. But they didn't solve the problem. In fairness, they made it a little better. I wouldn't say I was ripped off, and I do believe the manager when he said that the work they charged me for was necessary. But the manager didn't seem to acknowledge my expectation that, when told the work was completed, that the problem was solved. If I had my choice, I would give this place no stars at all. I've had much better experiences with other Pep Boy locations so I know the chain is capable of providing decent customer service. But as the other reviewers stated the employees are inattentive and could care less about the customer. It was made clear to me when I brought my car in at 9 a.m. on a weekday that "it would take awhile" but this was an emergency repair and I had no other choice. No employee updated me on how long "awhile" was or that parts had to be ordered or that this was an all-day job. I spent 9 hours in their horribly uncomfortable freezing waiting room on their hard chairs. If an employee had communicated with me that the work wouldn't even be started until 2 pm, I would have called a friend from work to pick me up and I could have put in a productive day. I would have had to chase down an employee in the work area because no one was ever at the reception area. Several customers walked out because there was no one available and I was responsible for sending two customers away after they asked me how long I'd been waiting and where the sales people were. Now that is satisfying when you can drive other customers away when you are so poorly treated. Avoid this place at all costs! read more

Colossal rip off!!! I had an appointment, and verified it by phone. Someone else said they take advantage of women. That's true. They take advantage of seniors too! I was there for TEN HOURS! Every time someone came out of the "magic door" (The set up is not customer friendly a all!!) the price went up. Customers were in and out all day at they were taken care of. I was there for TEN HOURS, got charged twice for an oil change, and left with a charge on my credit card almost as much as my rent. I had some other issues I asked the mechanic to look at, and he didn't. Taking advantage of an old lady is shameful! I won't be back! read more

Have brought my car here multiple times over the past few years - oil changes, new battery, tire rotations, etc. They provide something invaluable that many other chain mechanics don't: Honesty. They have not once tried to up-sell me fuel flushing or any other "wallet flushing" add-on services. As an example, another chain told me that I needed to replace rear brake pads and rotors. I asked Pep Boys and not only did they tell me that I still have enough meat on my pads for a little while, but they gave me the measurements of how much was left. Their prices can seem a little high when compared to others in the area, but there is always a multitude of coupons on their website to use. I had my car towed to the Pep Boys in Caldwell, NJ. I'm from PA and my family and I have had great experiences for years at the one in Wilkes-Barre, PA. So, I thought I would receive the same service at any Pep Boys. Not the case. When the man called me to tell me the work that needed to be done to "get my car up and running" he did not mention anything about an oil change. I went to pick it up, three days later. And one of the men said they did an oil change. I thought this was something complimentary they did while having my car for so long. To which I replied "oh, I use full synthetic oil" and he told me "I know, I looked it up in the system." Later, when I got home, I looked over the lengthy invoice/receipt I had. I noticed it said I paid for a conventional oil change. I called the store to ask if they used conventional oil or full synthetic. I was told the mechanic who worked on my car would not be in for a few days. If I wanted "to have peace of mind", I could bring it and they would change it for me. Fast forward a week later, my check engine light comes on. I take it to a closer Pep Boys and they run a test. The thermostat which the Caldwell store replaced, was causing the issue. I mentioned to the manager that I was going to bring the paperwork but I assumed they could pull up my info in the system. He said they aren't able to pull up the information from store to store. Hmm. If they aren't able to pull up from store to store in NJ, how did this other store pull my information up all the way in PA to find out what type of oil I use???? Needless to say, I will NOT be returning to the Pep Boys of Caldwell. I will only give my business to the Pep Boys in Wilkes-Barre, PA and Pinebrook, NJ. read more

Good use of the Internet and you can use it to schedule appointments and the guy working there follows what you typed on the Internet unlike other places! Lots of coupons. Called up around 2pm looking for 4 tires for my car. Was told that they had 4 tires in stock for my car and in total it would cost around $437. So with all of that in mind I scheduled an appointment for 3:30. I get there at my scheduled time and was told that the tires that were in stock are no longer available, and that it would cost me $100 more than my quoted price. I told the man behind the counter that I was told the tires were in stock and $100 less than what he was telling me. Obviously he had no answer for me other than that they were probably sold, but he could order them and have them there later on today. Needless to say I ended up getting different tires than what I wanted and paying $40 more than what I was quoted at. I will NEVER go back there again! read more

I recently had a problem with the valve on my tire and instead of charging me for an expensive replacement the team at Pep Boys worked hard to repair the part that I had. I felt that they not only respected my time (as well as other clients who had arrived before me) but they did everything that they could to minimize any cost to me.
