Brought my vehicle in here after purchasing a set of tires at another location a couple days earlier, but one of the new tires kept leaking air slowly. I was instructed to go to the local Pep Boys location, which is this one in Escondido. Was helped by Jason who got me taken care of right away at no charge. They discovered that it was a piece of rubber jammed in between the tire and the rim which broke the bead seal, causing my tire to leak air slowly. This shop and staff are the ultimate in customer service. I recently had some trouble with my battery and alternator. They did all they could to resolve my problems and when we exhausted all options they even referred me elsewhere, but I came back and they met all my expections and even exceeded them. This review is long overdue. I've been to this Pep Boys 3 times in the last 8 months. First time was for my brakes giving out, so scary, but Gary called and explained everything to me. They also suggested some other repairs which I thought would cost me an arm and a leg. One of the repairs I had been quoted for previously at a mom-and-pop shop for over $2500. At Pep Boys, to fix my brakes, brake line, oil change and the other suggested repairs cost me just under $1100. And the cherry on top, was my visit on Friday. I tried to change my brake lights myself, and accidentally knocked the bulb into the light casing, and couldn't get the bulb out. Ran by Pep Boys to see if they could get it for me, and not only did they get the bulb and fix the light, they did it with no complaints and a smile. I love coming to this Pep Boys. Called the number to make an appointment same day, for an emergency oil change, as well as a tire repair. Tires ended up needing to be replaced, which they took care of fast however the oil change was missed due to error between call center and store. After realizing this, Gary was able to fit it in even though this was at the end of the day. Wonderful customer service support provided by both Gary and Carlos M, quick and efficient work while making the process smooth even with the hiccup. I really want to like this location since I could literally walk to it, but it's been tough. I came in later on a Saturday as I had a slow leak in my tire. They let me know I could come back tomorrow and they would take care of me. I came back and I was told they don't have time to fix it. Go somewhere else. I did. I went to Supreme Tire up the street and they treated me so well. I was also going to buy the alignment package after getting my tire fixed but decided not to. Very good choice. My sister-in-law was visiting and noticed on the freeway her check-engine light came on, and she wasn't getting as much power when she accelerated. We stopped by Pep Boys, and although no service technicians were available, the person up front, Jason, offered to check the code. Unfortunately, the code was manufacturer specific. He did check her oil and noticed she was low by 3 quarts. Jason grabbed some oil, filled it up, and said hopefully that addresses the light, or at least will get her by until she could take it to the dealership. My boyfriend ex-boyfriend didn't put a bolt that he took off and also put something on backwards, so it was making a terrible screeching noise and this wonderful company Jason and his workers, did the work for free and sent me on my way and quoted me check my check everything I cannot think of them. Right off the bat, I came in and they were playing religious music. That's uncomfortable for me because of religious trauma. If you want to listen in your free time, go ahead, but not in a place of business. Then while I was waiting for my car, I saw one huge, live cockroach inside the waiting room, and one dead cockroach (see videos). The inside of the building looks like it has never been swept, moped, or dusted. Huge, thick cobwebs everywhere. As for my car, I got my tires rotated, but I asked them to fill a hole in my tire from a nail; they forgot to do it so I came back a second time to get it done. They also did not change my filter when I asked for that to be done. I was here for a total of 2-3 hours for an oil change, tire rotation, and filling one tiny hole. I personally feel that took too long. They have good prices and nice employees, which I do really appreciate (shout out to Izzy! He was very helpful!), but they definitely could work on presentation (making the building cleaner/more welcoming, and getting done all the things I asked for originally). read more

I've had my oil changed at the Escondido Pep Boys a few times now and each time has been a little strange. I brought my own oil each time. On my first visit I brought 3 quarts of oil (which is what my Mitsubishi Mirage is supposed to take) and the mechanic/technician only used a little over two quarts or just under two quarts, something like that. I was surprised and skeptical but the oil level seemed ok so I just went on with my life. The second time I went for an oil change I brought a 5 quart container of oil, thinking it would be good for 2 oil changes (at least part of the 2nd), but on that second visit the mechanic/technician said they used the full 5 quarts (without giving me the container back). I was a little annoyed because I had mentioned ahead of time that the vehicle should take 3 quarts, but, as I don't know that much about car engines, I figured there might be extra room in the engine for more oil and that the technician mistakenly used too much oil; as of now I'm pretty sure they stole the oil. On my latest visit (November 9th 2025) I brought 3-4 quarts of synthetic oil and 2 quarts of conventional oil (just in case they needed more). I handed all of it over to the technician, waited at the counter for a few minutes, talked outside with the technicians and then went for a walk while waiting for the work to be done. After walking for around 5 minutes I got a call from Gary informing me that the 3-4 quarts of synthetic oil were used and that he wouldn't use the conventional oil (he wanted me to use their oil). I can't say with 100% certainty that the synthetic oil wasn't used when I brought it in because when I bought it I didn't check the color. That was my mistake, although apparently the technicians at Pep Boys also didn't check the oil when I handed it to them. I bought the oil as new from someone who used to work on cars (Lance) so for him to have put used oil in there is pretty shady and I find it fairly unlikely (especially since we were chatting with the oil in front of us for quite some time and he took a good look at it). I did call Lance to let him know what happened and he was very sure that it was new oil when he sold it to me. When I got the synthetic oil back from the Pep Boys staff it was definitely used. Pep Boys staff also informed me that they would be refusing to use the conventional oil that I brought. When I contacted Pep Boys about my concerns (regarding my experiences at the Escondido location) all they did was direct the manager to contact me. The manager wasn't interested in addressing any of my concerns other than to say they will only put 0-20 synthetic in my vehicle; which is a little confusing since they never applied that requirement before. read more

Apparently you can't rely on information given to you by the employees at this location. I went there for a vehicle inspection and was not happy with the fact that I was treated like a liar. My original appointment was for Sunday and I spoke to a "Zac" who told me they could price match another store for the same service. I even asked if he wanted to see that store's promo and he said no. Today (Tuesday), the owner of this location said no, they don't price match this type of service. When they asked Zac, apparently he had no recollection of speaking to me about price matching another store and they charged me full price. I have a hard time believing that he totally forgot this conversation in just 2 days. I always had my vehicle fixed at Pep boys locations because of good service but I guess it just depends on the location. It's always better to own up to one's mistakes instead of blaming it on the customer. I took my car in October to get an oil change and my tires rotated. I usually do my own oil change or take it to Honda but I didn't have time to do it myself at the time so I took it to Pepboys. When I took it in it took almost 3 hours which is way too long. As I was paying the worker said he gave me Penzoil (because it was cheaper) but I told him twice that I wanted Mobil 1 oil which was frustrating. Recently I was due for an oil change so I did it myself, as I usually do. When I tried taking off my oil filter it was completely stuck. I used a variety of methods: oil filter wrenches, hammering a screwdriver through, etc. and it wouldn't come out. Called Honda and they said they'd pick it up and try to take it off. Honda wasn't able to take it off either. After a day they discovered Pepboys had installed the wrong oil filter in my car and Honda had to take out the oil filter housing and install a new one because the oil filter Pepboys installed would not come out. The filter Pepboys installed stripped my oil filter housing and one of the employees at Honda said the same thing happened to them. DONT GET YOUR CAR SERVICED HERE read more

I've been going to Pep Boys for over 20 years off and on at this location. When I see the location now, I feel sad seeing how small the Pep Boys location has become since they merged with a parts store. But I understand it was a corporate issue. I've always gotten my work done at reasonable prices, and I've always had to work performed with the proper oil and filter that I chose This is very important to me because I've been to quick oil places they put the wrong weight of oil and don't care what type of oil they put in your vehicle Which could lead to warranty issues if an internal problem occurs So I've always been extremely happy with the fact that Pep Boys is very exact in the types and weight of a oils that are recommended for the vehicle I've never had any serious problems with the store, location, and any problems that I've had were taken care of by the service manager. But whenever I need work done, this is the location I choose in the store that I am the happiest with because it's always been good to me and the mechanics are trustworthy. read more

I had car towed to this location to replace starter. I was given a high quote. I called the Pep boys I've used before to ask for estimate. Quote was $350 less than Escondido. They emailed me the quote to take to Escondido to check part number. Same part number!! Their explanation was ridiculous! They said other Pep Boys did not mark up the price. Really love this location. As a female who has had some bad experiences getting my car serviced, love this shop. They are about car maintenance, pure and simple and don't try to upsell a bunch of unnecessary things. Have always been honest with me. Take today as a for instance. I was convinced my CV joints needed to be replaced. CONVINCED. Nope. After their inspection they thought they had many miles left on them. The front guys are outstanding. You need to stop by when Gary is on shift. He will serenade you with the music playing and if you want to join in, he doesn't seem to mind a bit. Great shop. Great people. I wanna first start off by saying that these people want to take advantage of you. What I mean by this is that let's say you have a punctured tire, and you want to just buy one they'll try to sell you all four. We couldn't even get home because of one tire which they refused to sell to us. They will also try to play dumb with you by the way you dress thinking you don't know anything. If I could give negative rating I would. This service center a really ridiculous. I made an appointment for a diagnostic on my bmw. My appointment was for October 20 at 4pm. I already had the codes I just needed to get it diagnosed. The only reason why I came to pep boys is because it was on the list of authorized placed for my warranty. Otherwise , Everyone knows that pep boys is only good for oil changes and maybe tires. Once i got to my appointment the man working stated that he saw my appointment but no one was in to diagnose my car . He then proceed to tell me that they do not work in European cars. Sir, if that's the case why did your system let me book and why didn't you call me to let me know that ? He stated that they don't have any phone numbers of the customers that book. He offered to have One of his guys diagnose but he said his master mechanic wouldn't work on it. Are you really a master mechanic if you can't work on foreign cars ? I bought a tire from them to mount on a wheel to use as a spare in my motorhome. When I arrived home, I looked at the tire and noticed there were no balancing weights on the wheel. Very unusual for it to be perfectly balanced. Turns out the technician "forgot" to balance it after he mounted the tire. Very disappointed in the service I got from Pep Boys in Escondido. Unacceptable! I made an appointment for an oil change and to check on a tire with a slow leak for 11 am. After my 11 mile drive to get to Pep Boys I was told that they were busy, the online system did not guarantee the time slot and my wait time was going to be about 5 hours. On top of that, they told me that their 8 am appointments hadn't been seen yet either. These guys only open at 7am. That says to me that they accepted walk-ins and didn't care about those regular customers that actually have an online account with them and planned ahead. What makes this even worse is that there is such an invention as the telephone. How difficult would it be to call customers before they come out to let them know that they can't honor their commitments? There was no attempt at service recovery here at all. There were no other customers around. I ask the sales person if I could get two tires installed. His answer was "Potentially!" The way he said it was loud and obnoxious. Then he tells me I have to wait 10 minutes until he can help me. Meanwhile there's another salesman standing next to him doing absolutely nothing. You want to remedy the situation then fire his ass! I make an appointment on Wednesday for Thursday morning at 11 am for an oil change. I get a call Thursday morning at 9 am from Gary, the manager, saying that they can't do the oil change because they were busy and short staffed. Then blamed the website saying it shouldn't have allowed me to make an appointment. He tells me to re-schedule... I make another appointment this Thursday for today Sunday at 5 pm. I arrive at around 4:50 pm and the gentlemen behind the counter tells me that he doesn't see anything in the system and to re-schedule... Horrible. read more

Avoid! Called ahead, struck deal on two new tires and time I would arrive. Arrived at approximately 12pm, completed the paperwork, told should be done by 3pm would receive text. No text at 4pm. Returned, told I had not had an appt. and they were obligated to serve people with appointments first. My car could be done in 1hr. The place was quiet when I originally arrive and quiet when I returned; one man working in the bay. Three men shooting the breeze in the front. I kicked myself for trusting a Pep Boys. This was out and out bad faith dealing. I did not give them my business, took my key (which they gladly returned to me instead of knocking out the tire install--three motivated mechanics on two new tires would not have taken long at all) and left. I came in today to get a tire checked out. I thought I had a puncture since the tire pressure monitor had gone off. They checked out the tire and didn't find a puncture and didn't charge me for checking it out. Glad there are still honest places out there you can trust. read more
