My initial encounter at Alan's was positive - the fellow at the counter was extremely friendly and gave me a rough estimate for a new cat and he recommended replacing the timing belt as well, since my vehicle was nearing 90k miles. Since this advice checked out on Google, I called back to make an appointment for the two jobs (these are not cheap repairs). Was given a date 2 weeks out due to their busy schedule and was told the repair work would take 2 days to complete. Fast forward 2 weeks - handed over my keys and car on a Wednesday evening so that I could have it ready by the weekend. Radio silence from Alan's on Thursday. Around noon on Friday I called to check progress and was told to call back at 1:30pm for an update. Called back then and was told that they still needed to ASSESS my vehicle. I explained that I was told it would be READY by Friday evening and they seemed surprised - couldn't I just leave it with them, (presumably indefinitely) until they got around to it? I explained that no, I needed my vehicle back, but would appreciate an assessment and would think about bringing it in again at a later date for the actual repair. Fellow on the phone said, yes of course, he would call me back shortly with an update on their assessment. Hearing nothing, I called him back at 4pm - he rushed me off the phone, saying he had two people in the office he needed to attend to and would call me right back. By 5pm I was at Alan's with my wife to retrieve our vehicle. Our car was sitting in the lot with its windows down, in the rain. The owner saw us walking past the open garage door heading to the office and did not return my greeting. We entered the office and were ignored. We spotted our keys on the wall and took them. Wife hopped in our car and began to pull out of the driveway, and only then did the owner emerge from the garage, suddenly very chatty. Seeing that we were about to leave, he shared the results of the assessment. I listened politely, made mental notes, and left forever.

Found a mobile mechanic did the work in four hours for less than this shop would have charged, also out over 500 bucks in towing charges, this company has no integrity.

Once my car was in the garage, they suddenly claimed my lug nuts were misaligned and tried to charge me an extra $120 and another hour of labor. At that point, I decided not to proceed with the repairs at this shop.. Later, on my way to a dealership for a second opinion, I discovered that the shop's technician had broken my wheel lock key - likely while tightening the lugs nuts back on after I declined the service. They never told me this happened. I lost an entire work day fixing the mess and getting my car repaired. This experience felt dishonest and retaliatory. I urge my fellow Gators to avoid this shop. They showed shifting prices, no accountability, and poor ethics. ZERO stars -- not worthy of AAA trust. DO NOT recommend this shop.

I would not recommend Ahren's-- especially to university students-- based off of my experience with…read moretheir team and their extreme upcharging of parts. Their pricing is not honest at all. I took my car in with serpentine belt issues. For my make and model, this part generally costs $30-$50. Ahren's priced this part at $80. Their diagnostic examine also found belt tensioner issues. For the serpentine and belt tensioner replacement combined, they quoted me $512 of repairs. This is extremely high and gives me the inclination that this is another mechanic in town that is trying to take advantage of college students who are not as informed on car repairs. I do not think the presented quote is fair by any means so thanked them and let them know I would not be having service done their. I was presented with an $85 fee for a half-hour diagnostic look. This fee was not disclosed beforehand at all, was not mentioned verbally, and I did not sign anything agreeing to this fee. Take your car elsewhere. I took my vehicle here just out of convenience of location, but have previously had much better service at the Firestone off of Archer and with Billy's Auto Repair & Towing. UPDATE: I went in to pick up my car and wish I could leave a negative review. If you take your car here and leave without even having any work done, you will be charged an $85 minimum. I asked why I wasn't informed of this in anyway (no signatures, no verbal inform) beforehand and the woman working the front desk had the owner come out. He raised his voice and started asking why I hadn't taken my car to Billy's or somewhere else. In his rant he referenced other reviews that I have left on Gainesville for miscellaneous places which was unsettling. He lied and said he listened to my phone conversation, saying that I was informed of all fees beforehand-- I certainly was not and he wouldn't play the recording. They fixed our car which had too much transmission fluid in it, causing it to overheat (which was filled by the dealership mechanic). They had to stay late past their closing time and allowed myself, two children, and dog to wait while they quickly worked on the car and for an extremely reasonable price. I have never had such a positive experience. I only wish I lived closer to give them all of my business.
