I had an okay experience at this Pep Boys location. The staff were very friendly and the service was decent. I was in need of an oil change and didn't want to pay an arm and a leg. Pep Boys had the best prices and I was able to make an appt online. In total, I paid $30 for a high mileage oil change, tire rotation, and an oil filter. This was the cheapest I could find in the area, including Groupon deals. Fermando, an associate, helped me with check in. I arrived about 10 minutes before my appt time and he immediately greeted me. Fermando was polite, quick, and super friendly! His customer service will be the only reason I return. My appt time was at 1pm and my car was ready around 3:15pm . I opted to wait in their customer lounge, which has chairs and a tv. It did take awhile to complete my oil change, but I know this is the case for most car places. read more

Don't go they broke my car and then want to charge me to repair it. I drove a working car to the shop for a AC compressor replacement. They called me after they install the part and said the alternator started blowing black smoke and car would no longer start. After asking more questions the representative said they had nothing to do with the alternator failure and that we would have to pay full price to replace it or have it towed out of pep boys. The total price was nearly twice what was quoted. I would strongly recommend looking at any other shop if at all possible and definitely steer clear if your AD military. read more

I stood in line patiently for about 15 minutes -- no issue. When I finally got to the counter, I asked about windshield wipers and tires. Tires? Fine, they didn't have my size and said it would take three weeks. No problem there. But then Cody grabs the windshield wipers, scans them, and tells me they aren't in his inventory so he can't sell them. I understand policies -- that part wasn't the problem. What set me off was the complete lack of effort to fix the situation. No checking the back, no offering alternatives, no looking up another store, no "let me try something else." Just a flat, dismissive: "I can't sell them to you." That's it. The customer service at the Hampton (Mercury Boulevard) Pep Boys was absolutely disappointing. I had a scheduled appointment for 9:00 AM this morning. Around 2:00 PM, I called to check on the status of my vehicle and was informed that it had just entered the service bay due to staffing shortages and employee call-offs. I was told that work was only just beginning at that time. (They didn't care to reach out and inform me of this gladly I didn't have nothing else to do... I'm afraid if I didn't call them, I would've never knew that my car was just beginning to get worked on) At approximately 4:00 PM, I called again and was advised that only one portion of the service had been completed. Later, around 5:00 PM, I received a call stating that the vehicle would require an additional 45 minutes of work. However, I never received a follow-up call to confirm that my vehicle was finished. When I arrived at the shop in an Uber, I noticed my vehicle already parked outside in the lot. Ultimately, I did not pick up my vehicle until 6:05 PM despite having dropped it off at 9:00 AM. Upon pickup, I was informed that I would still be required to pay the full price and that no manager was available at the time. My daughter went to this location and got ripped off! The only service she got was for them to put a new battery in her car. Her total came out to be $277.61!! They charged her $130.31 claiming the labor took one hour to put in a battery. No decency to adjust or pro-rate because we all know it doesn't take 1 whole hour to put in a battery. The thing is they were not transparent with her, they should have told her what all cost were upfront before putting in the battery. So for a 15 min job she was charged $130.31! Please do not do business with this location. They are a bunch of crooks. Corporate needs to do better with their labor charges. I am putting this store which is store #186 on blast everywhere I can. I went in this morning to get air for low tire pressure and was told someone would come out to help. After 15 minutes no one had arrived. I saw two technicians in the bay and called out to them- no one looked up. I blew my horn and still they didn't look up. It was raining and I had to get to work so I called back inside and was immediately put on hold. After 10 minutes I gave up and left. I went down the street to another company and they put air in those tires within five minutes and I was on my way to work. Hampton Pepboys you need to close. Scheduled an appointment for 0900 to have my car battery checked. At 1100 the car had not been touched. Left and was told I would receive a call back. At 1:30pm I called them and they said the battery, starter, and alternator were fine. They suggested an electronic component evaluation, said they would complete it and call me back. Called them AGAIN at 4pm to which they replied it would need to wait until the next day. Next day at 1100 they called to say they did the electrical eval but they couldn't find the problem. Brought my vehicle to Ford Dealership, they called me within an hour saying the battery was bad and needed to be replaced. If you are behind on your services, do not take on additional appointments. read more

After they were done no one came tell me. If I hadn't noticed they drove my truck out I probably would've sat there for another 30 min or so. Took 20 min to check out and pay. Same thing, was only one in line and the people at the desk didn't pay me any mind. Okay so basically they had my car since 8am, the reason I went there was to get my Valve stem fixed it took them till about 12pm to tell me that nothing was wrong with it and that they double checked. I had 2 people before them tell me that my valve stem is leaking so im not understanding. So instead of them fixing that I got a new tire which they didn't get done till about 4pm, mind u my cars been there since 8am that's ridiculous. So today my tire icon came on and I found out that I do have a leak in my valve stem. Never again when I go to this pep boys. I took my car in that I have only had for two months for an oil change. It is basically new and had no issues. They tell me I have a slow oil leak and need an alignment. I have not seen any signs of an oil leak as my car will sit in the driveway all day (I work nights) and not one oil spot stain, no matter how much I drove. I also noticed I have a new scratch on my side door that wasn't there before drop off and a new chip in my windshield. Never going back there again and never recommending. I had a 12pm appt for a tire installation and oil change. They didn't finish until 330pm. They proceed to tell me that my battery was low. Now any other business would have said being that you're already here, let's change the battery as well. Nope, not this place. They said we left your car running because your battery is low. Now I'm in the car and I notice my foot is hitting something. The cover panel where the brake and gas pedal is, is hanging. They didn't even attempt to put it back. It's hanging so low that It's getting in the way of my pushing the brake to stop the car. This place is a joke! read more

Previously gave Pep Boys a 5 star rating back in 2014 but today July 22, 2017 they took a 180 degree turn. Pep Boys dishonored a special for new tires on one of my vehicles in which I could buy 3 and get the 4th free. The assistant manager was awesome in trying to rectify the problem but was unable to do so. I purchased the tires at the online site and attempted to utilize my Pep Boys Points. First they did not have the tires in stock and secondly they said the tire I purchased was not part of the special of 4 tires for the price of 3. After placing the order online days prior when I came to pay for it a few days later the order was gone. At the store they could not verify I made the order even after I initiated payment that (thank God) it did not go threw. The assistant manager at the time did his best to rectify the situation but with no avail. Pep Boys is a great place to go and buy accessories and parts for your vehicle however the server department is another story. I notice they are always overbooked and the mechanics and technians appear to be very frustrated and tired. Makes you wonder when you go there for a brake job. With that being said I will continue to use Pep Boys for parts and accessories only but nothing else. read more

Tell me how someone (the girl) answers the phone while still talking to another customer I'm assuming on another phone and you have to sit and listen to a 3 minute conversation. Then when they get to you after saying hello 10 times, they get an attitude. Then proceed to tell me that my car is leaking oil they don't know why and I need to go to BMW dealership. Asked is it safe to drive she replies well did you drive it here. I said yes and again asked if it was safe to drive and she's like well that's up to you. No I wouldn't advise it or anything. Like so if I drive my car and get in an accident because it leaking "engine oil" whose gonna cover that. Mind you pep boys did a full tune up on the vehicle. These guys changed out my spark plugs in 2005 on my Ford Expedition for $235, using the Bosch Platinums that I supplied. Called recently to have them change my plugs using the NGK iridiums that I bought. The guy on the phone asked me why those over Motorcraft. After I told him it was required for my particular application, he then quotes me the price of $435. I went to Home Depot and purchase a Milwaukee electric wrench for $99 and changed the plugs myself. 2 stars for price gouging. There is no one on earth that can convince me that 15 years equals almost 100% inflation on the labor on a 1998 Ford! Also, if you don't want to take the job because you're not making money on parts, then just say so. I respect people at shops that are up front with me. read more

I called at 5pm in Thursday trying to get a state inspection for my car. Was told they open at 8am and it was first come first serve the next morning. Drove 30 minutes and was there at opening -8am. After 30 minutes the technician asks if there are any state inspections and announces that we can leave our car and pick it up next week Monday or Tuesday. I just returned from being out of town for a few months. As I was leaving for work on November 26th, I noticed that my inspection sticker was due that month. I was then slightly frantic to get my car to an inspection station since I was going out of town again the next day. I called multiple places hoping that they could get me in same day or the following and they all turned me away. When I called this location Rebecca was extremely friendly and told me to bring my car in as soon as I could and she would try to assist me. Once I arrived, she checked me in and I was out of there with an inspected vehicle in about an hour. Danny was very proficient with my vehicle (I could see through the glass). I rate this location a 4-star because of service writer Stacie, who took my call about installing four tires on my 1986 BMW 325 that requires a near-impossible to find 14" mid-profile tire. She managed my expectations about wait time and out-the-door installation price with excellence. I had called other tire vendors, including other Pep Boys, where the tires were not in stock or I was placed on 'Hold' way too long. Of course, Stacie had no control over maintaining the tires in stock at the time I needed them, but she did have them stacked and waiting for installation on my arrival from North Carolina... as I wrote above, this size is near-impossible to find in stock or even online. 195-65/14 Oh yeah, they're the Falken Ziex ZE-329 with the H rating, as required by BMW. Not sure why the reviews are so low but I've never dealt with the service department so maybe that's it. Easily the best parts store I've been to, they have the most stuff and it's nice to be able to run up here when I realize I need a tool I don't have for a project. I mean, honestly I just LIKE the place but whenever I'm working on my car it demands I go here to get tools and hardware...it's obsessed with the store and staff. It tells me it LOVES the store. It kind of worries me, I think my car is sentient and some nights I wake up late to find it's out driving itself around and I have to go pick it up from the pep boys parking lot. It's not healthy behavior but what do you expect from a car? It's not really built to handle intense feelings of love, just high speeds with excellent handling...I've tried to YouTube some advice to this but nobody makes any kind of part that helps with this issue. Even if they did I'm sure it wouldn't be plug and play, I'd probably have to do a lot of tuning and I really don't have the time right now I'm just too busy at work lately. I took my car in for an oil change and a CV axle on the drivers side on March 28, 2019. Oil change was due and the axel had been noisy for a bit so figured I would just do it all. I received a call the next day saying I would also need brakes. Ok . . . $400 Then, I receive ANOTHER call saying I would need rotors as well. Not too surprising, I guess, ok. . . $600 Finally, I receive a THIRD CALL saying, "oh, you also need tie rods. Your total will now be over $1000"(I was given a free alignment, since no one told me I would be needing one, and 10% off due to repeated calls, full disclosure). I authorize and pay for repairs and I take my car home. I rationalize all this since the car has over 260k miles and I have yet to replace a tie rod and well, I need brakes to stop and they would know, right? Within a week, I become aware of a clattering sound coming from my front end on the right side. I don't have time (work and other responsibilities make it hard to just leave my car and they are rarely able to same day anything) to drop my car off immediately so I take it back April 26, 2019. The next day they report to me that a nut "backed off". They replaced it, replaced a cotter pin, and put lock tight on it. 0$ charge I STILL hear the sound, so I take it back again on May 7th, 2019 (again time and work dictate when I can address these things). I take it in. They say they will drive it. I get a call next day. (See photo) I am quoted over $2000, after tax, worth of work that needs to be done. Please consider that I have now had my car inspected by them three times in 2 months and now suddenly EVERYTHING in my suspension apparently needs to be replaced. I'm sick with worry because my '99 Accord isn't worth the money I have put in, and am being told, I need to continue to put into it. At this point I am seriously looking into replacing my car, which is something I cannot afford. I decline all work and take it somewhere else the next weekend (a competing national chain). It is busy everywhere since it is yhe weekend so I had to drop my car off again. This new place comes back stating that not only is EVERY ITEM Pep Boys quoted me an unnecessary repair, they were also able to pass my inspection. I paid $26 for my state inspection and the vehicle diagnostic charge. I will note that they did not find what the clattering was either. For those still here, that is 3 visits to pep boys, $3000 in quotes for "required repairs" and one to competitor, $26 . . . and I still have the noise. I am finally able to leave my car with my regular mechanic. I have gone to him for years, trust him implicitly BUT he is not open on weekends and stays exceeding busy so I rarely am able to utilize his service due to aforementioned work constraints. However, we went on our honeymoon so I was able to leave my car so he could work at his leisure. He changes my oil, takes a drive in my car to hear it the noise, gets it on the lift, and almost IMMEDIATELY finds the source of the noise (see picture). A hanger of some sort has either popped up onto, or been left around, my right front strut. My mechanic was of a mind that it was left there when I got my tie rod done. What he did NOT find was any reason to replace anything listed on the $2000 quote from Pep Boys. I picked my car up today. (June 13, 2019) To say I am furious is an understatement. Pep Boys preyed on my fears. I am CERTAIN they never drove my vehicle. They MAYBE put it in the air but no real inspection was done. They were ready to charge me $2000 in unnecessary repairs to my vehicle just to shut me up and the PROBLEM WOULD HAVE STILL EXISTED! They have had my business for going on 3 years now but trust me when I say I. Will. NEVER!! go back. EVER. I am sure they are heartbroken but if I can save even 1 person the worry and anxiety I felt in those weeks then I did the right thing. TL;DR: Pep Boys will quote you unnecessary repairs. I wish I could give this a negative rating. I used to always go to Pep Boys for anything (I even drove from Williamsburg to Hampton and now from Norfolk to Hampton). I liked this location. But the past few times I've been I have had NOTHING but HORRIBLE service (customer and car wise.) Today I took my car to have the tires rotated, the oil changed, and my inspection done. I had an appointment for 11:30, but got out of class early so I drove from Norfolk and dropped it off early (close to 10:45.) Called about 1:15ish to check on the status and they said they had it in the bay and were working on it. Was over in the area so I stopped by just to get a time estimate, they said it would be about an hour (so it would be done by 3). Well 3:15 rolls around and still not a single word so I went up there and the inspection hadn't even been started and I needed a new license plate bulb (which I had but they wouldn't accept it.) I was never called and asked for permission to put the new bulb in and if I hadn't gone up there my car would still probably be sitting there waiting. After being there for another 30 minutes (4pm now) I finally saw them putting the bulbs in and taking off my old sticker, but the guy was messing around. I asked if the sticker was being put on now and he said it was and I asked him to hurry because I had class and needed to get back to Norfolk and traffic was already getting bad. He got very rude and very snippy with me saying he was told "literally 3 minutes ago" to put a new bulb in. So after almost 5 1/2 hours I finally got my car back. I have no idea why the reviews here are bad. I recently had the worst luck getting a flat tire while at my first day of school that was an hour away from home. I had to get my car towed by a very rude tow truck driver to two different locations before thankfully ending up at this Pep Boys. Zach, Valencia and Joseyph were incredibly understanding and patient. They helped make what was a horrifying and very inconvenient situation so much better. I appreciated their down to earth honesty and how knowledgeable they were about cars in general. I noticed the whole staff and incredible customer service skills and they were able to get my very stubborn lugnut off and put on my dummy tire on and give me very helpful advice in less than an hour. It may not seem like allot but I was very overwhelmed and in a completely new and unfamiliar area and I felt like I was in incredibly safe hands with them at this Pep Boys. I highly recommend this location to anybody in need of car services and I hope I get the opportunity to do business with them in the future. read more
