I started taking my car to the shop on Ivory Way in Madison, Alabama 10 years ago when I first bought my Altima...back when it was still Big Ten Tires. Maybe the place was more trustworthy back then? I trusted the mechanics there not to take advantage of me. They'd always been so nice and so great about patching a tire really quick for free since I'm a regular customer...I felt I owed them some loyalty. Every year when I would get my Income Tax return, I would take my car to them and get tires and/or whatever else they told me my car needed at the time (a belt, struts, a radiator flush, etc. etc). This year (2018) when I received my refund, I hopped in my same little car...all blissed up with ignorance thinking I had such a good place to go...and drove over to Pep Boys to get the catalytic converter replaced (something they had told me I needed to do the previous year, but after spending $2200 on other things, I was out of money and had to wait) along with an oil change. They told me my car was no longer rattling and that the rattle I had been concerned about was a result of being low on oil because my car was blowing oil from several leaks. I thought that was strange because I'd never seen any drips of oil in my driveway. When I left that afternoon, the AC (which was working fine the day before) was no longer working. I called them back and they graciously agreed to look at it to make sure it wasn't something they'd done. When I did take it back to them, they called me back with a quote of $1395 to replace the AC compressor. I told them I couldn't afford that and got my car back. Another mechanic - a long time FRIEND of mine - agreed to put the compressor on for me if I ordered one, so I ordered the compressor kit for $220 and he had it working like a ice-cold dream in just a little while. He also replaced one of the CV axles (an $80 part that Pep Boys quoted for $190 plus $150 or so for labor) in about 40 minutes. This in itself is not my complaint. My complaint is that after already being suspicious about my AC failure, my mechanic friend called me to ask who had been working on my car because there were loose bolts, missing bolts, motor mounts loose, broken brackets never replaced after being damaged, a missing panel, etc. He also said that I did not have any oil leaks...after 6 weeks, my car was full of nice, clean oil...that all of the grease I had seen (that I had taken as evidence of oil blowing out like they'd said) had come from the broken boot on that CV axle. (Which would explain why my car actually WAS still rattling when I picked it up).He also told me that the other CV axle was fine and didn't need to be replaced (after Pep Boys had told me it did). He DID say that everything else looked fine, though. He tightened everything back up (no more rattling for REAL now) and is going to get the panel I'm missing from a junk yard. I will NEVER visit Pep Boys again. NEVER. After 10 years of loyalty to them, they have lost every ounce of trust I'd given them. You CAN be deceived if you don't know enough about auto mechanics...even us chicks that know how to change filters and tires and radiators and throttle cables and relay switches, etc. read more

I've been to several places such as this one and this Pepboy tire & service center had one of the best staffs I've ever had the pleasure to meet. I'm from TN visiting family in Huntsville and I had an emergency with my car. They promptly got my car back and unfortunately I had, to me, a serious issue with my car making it inoperable. They were kind enough to let me keep my car there so it can be towed back to middle TN to my home mechanic. This is nothing against the staff,I just have one mechanic that works on all my vehicles. Mr. Cody at the front desk was extraordinarily polite and very professional and this goes to the entire staff at this Pepboy tire and service center. I thank y'all for everything. I bought two tires which were installed in front. Around 20,000 miles later, both tires develop sidewall bubbles. They refused to even look at the tires, said it "can't be proven that the tire is defective." Then he suggested I buy the same tire to replace the defective tires. Instead,I bought new BETTER tires from a business down the road for a BETTER PRICE with BETTER CUSTOMER SERVICES, and will NEVER go back to Pep Boys. read more

I called Pep Boys on Wednesday to ask if they did air conditioner checks and the man informed me they did...I made an appointment for 10:00 on Friday morning. I arrived at 9:50, parked my van in the parking space, left my keys with the man at the front desk, thinking mine would probably be pulled into the bay in a few minutes to get the check done. I sat in the waiting area until almost 12:00 and no one had talked to me to let me know what the problem was or the cost of repair. I went to the counter to ask the man how much longer it was going to be and he looked like he was in a total state of confusion. He got my name and as he was walking away to check, I looked toward the parking lot and my van was still in the same place I had parked it....by the time he got back, I told him it was still in the same place I had left it. He informed me that they had been checking another one out for the AC and mine would be the next one. I told him, "No thank you....I need my keys, you're not doing anything to my vehicle".....I also informed him I had an appointment at 10:00 and no one had told me I would be waiting for two hours after an appointment and not sure how long I would have sat there if I hadn't asked. The air conditioner was out in the building, also. I was very upset about making an appointment that was just totally looked over and no one had told me why I was having to wait as long as I did with nothing done. If the appointments are ignored, why make them. Please tell everyone to come on in...first come, first served...then we will know what to expect. Needless to say, I will never go to that place again. I took my van to Express Oil on Wall Triana the next morning....they checked it out, put Freone in my air conditioner and I was out of there in less than 45 minutes. If you need anything done on your vehicles, go to Express Oil on Wall Triana....service is excellent, prices are very reasonable and people are courteous. DO NOT TAKE YOUR VEHICLE TO PEP BOYS IN MADISON....THEY DON'T CARE ABOUT YOU. read more

I went in to Pep Boys yesterday for a tire balance and rotation I had formally purchased in Athens. I needed my oil changed and a dimmer bulb replaced. I waited an hour and a half and was given other things that they said needed to be done but told them no go with what was scheduled. Almost 500.00 in estimates. I was again approached and told the bulb for my light would have to be special ordered at 180.00. Told them no and finally paid my bill with a grand total of 105.09 for an oil change and an air filter. Upon arrival home I checked the headlight and still did not work on dim but I was charged 34.99 for a bulb they did not put in. I went back today and they did refund my money and was going to replace the bulb but was told again it was the bulb that costed 180.00. While there I spoke with one Robert Newton and told him had I not purchased the lifetime balance and rotation I would not do any further business with them. He then stated he did not need my business. I was approached again by Robert and was told that they had broken my door handle on the drivers side and would replace it free of charge. I spent an hour and a half yesterday there. An hour there today and have to return tomorrow. If Robert tells all his customers that who would be funding his paycheck? I did get the managers card and will be speaking to him tomorrow. I did not deserve Robert`s comment. They did laugh all the way to the bank when I swiped my debit card for 105.09 when I could have gotten much better service cheaper and faster elsewhere. read more

Unfortunately I am obligated to post a negative review for a local business! As residents of Madison we try to support these local businesses as we own a local business ourselves! I apologize for the length of this post but this business has failed in providing the services they specialize in! We brought out 2009 Chevy HHR in, complaining of front end noise and shimmy when applying the brakes. We were told that the brakes were fine but the struts were "bottoming out" and needed replacement with an estimate of over $700! We decided to not proceed and called another local shop and their price to replace struts was just over $400! Please keep in mind that the manager, Brian has known me as I've purchased tires there before. Before proceeding, we recalled that we had purchased a warranty product from CarMax when we purchased the car. Upon bringing the car in, explaining that we needed new struts, after 4 hours to our amazement we were told the rotors needed turning and that the struts were fine! Then I argued with them as Pep Boys had thoroughly inspected and struts needed replacing. Well after the brake job our problem is solved for around $300! I tried to call Brian and explain but he had already left for the day. I do plan to call and speak with him but the public must know that their service techs are lacking and their service retail folks are lacking skills to handle these type service issues. All in all a total failure, grade F minus! read more

I cannot recommend them. After having my brakes replaced one week earlier from another vendor, I noticed a scratching sound and decided to have Pep Boys check thebrakes to make sure nothing had lodged itself in the rotors which would potentially cause damage. Pep Boys told me I needed new brakes as the earlier brake repair was not done correctly. I agreed. But after the brakes were replaced I noticed the exact same scratching sound. Pep Boys that's the way new brakes sound. But I had specifically asked them prior to the 2nd brake job if the scratching sound was normal for the more expensive ceramic brakes. And they said no. In other words there was nothing wrong with my earlier brakes and they replaced them anyway. It was the exact same sound. I let that go but on a second car I own Pep Boys replaced all 4 tires. I brought it in for a free rotation which they refused to do on the grounds that the front treads had too much wear compared to the rear. Why else rotate the tires? They then tried to sell me a whole new set of tires when I have plenty of tread! They are only half way through their mileage warranty. On top of that they tried to sell an additional $1175 front struts and shocks and rear shocks replacement which I know for a fact I do not need. All total they tried to convert a simple tire rotation into a $2000.00 plus repair. I am a 50 year old 6'2" construction worker and do not look like an easy target. I can't imagine what they might try to sell others. Be forewarned. It was a nice shop when it was privately owned before Pep Boys and PB is unashamedly cashing in on that good rep and you should use due diligence if dealing with them. read more
