I highly recommend PepBoys in Merced for your car repairs and services. A few months ago, I ran into some problems with my car. I took it elsewhere to get a new battery and it ran fine that day. The following day, I went to Pep Boys after I got off work. When I returned to my car, my car wouldn't start. I left my car there over night and they were to run a diagnostic test to find the cause and notify me the following day. I received a phone call from the Manager,JUAN ORTIZ who explained to me that they did run the diagnostic test and it wasn't my battery. But the mechanic did some further accessment and found that my battery cables had corrosion all the way thru and into my motor. JUAN explained the part that was needed and the cost. He was very friendly, courteous, polite and moreover, professional. JUAN made sure I understood what exactly happened to my car and why. I went in there after work that day and JUAN showed me my cable wires and they were extremely corroded. I was impressed with the great correspondence that he provided for me updating me on the progress while my car was being repaired. While my new part was being installed, JUAN called and informed me that the battery that was installed, was the wrong size and that I needed to take it back to the place I bought it from and have them exchange and install the correct size because, my hood holder was laying directly on the positive battery terminal and that it would get extremely hot. I picked up my car after it was fixed feeling very satisfied. JUAN called me to follow up on my car and to make sure that my battery got replaced. I'm a very happy customer and will take my car there again without hesitation. JUAN's professionalism, promptness and knowledgeability made my decision to get my car serviced there an easy one. Huge thanks to the Merced Service Advisor Charles ('Charlie') Salmon!! After leaving Chowchille, I headed south and stopped to get a subway sandwich. Upon returning to the car, it wouldn't start. This is the 2nd time my 2004 Crown Vic did this. Waiting didn't help. I called Pep Boys in Fresno, and the advisor said they were all booked up, and couldn't get to it till tomorrow. I called the Merced Pep Boys and Charlie told me to bring it in! He even arranged a tow for me! I knew it was bad, and hoping its the battery or alternator, but kind of knew it was the fuel pump. By the way, the tow truck driver, Drake, was awesome too! Real efficient, by the book, and later found he was real funny and entertaining, and "lent some real good advice, no extra charge". While I waited for my car, Charlie told me he didn't have a technician available and would have to do it tomorrow. Bummer. But after a short time, he passed the news that he's got tech to start working on it! Toward the end of shift, some other issues with the fuel system were found, requiring the fuel tank to be dropped. What surprised me was they had all the parts needed!! So I reservered a hotel room and Charlie took me there locking up, after hours, in his own car and gas! Following an entertaining time in Merced, I called Charlie and he gave me a delivery time. At close to the delivery time, he called me, and drove again to pick me up in his other, real nice, car! He even stayed a little after hours to match my car with some wheel covers. After all that Charlie did, the bill didn't seem that bad! Many thanks Pep Boys and the gung ho, Semper Fi (Marine slogan, always faithful) to Charlie Salmon, getting me back on the road!!! I thought the Visalia Pep Boys was good, but Merced's is top notch. Please don't let Charlie go somewhere else - give em a raise, bonus, whatever it takes: keep him there - he saved my butt and extra hotel costs. read more

I just had a brake job on a Toyota Sienna done at the Merced Pep Boys. I was pretty cautious because I had a few negative experiences there previously. In my opinion, there was a bit of manipulative "up-selling" of repairs (additional issues raised to increase commissions and repair sales). I spoke to Anthony (Service Representative) over the phone regarding those issues and he was candid and honest about the challenges and changes the store has had to deal with recently. I did bring the car in and noticed how cordial and relational Anthony was with me and his other customers (very impressive). Before the brakes were done, there was an additional issue brought to me that would have doubled the cost of the repair. I chose not to do it then and will attempt the repair myself at a later date. Anthony then took some time to share some suggestions about how I could accomplish this myself later. So far (2 days later) the brakes are working quite well (no squeaks or vibration). I think when most folks come to get a repair, they want to get it done and not be sold "other repairs" because they were made to feel anxious about other related issues. Service Reps like Anthony and Daniel are making steps build trust and clientele for the store. When I go back for another repair, I will ask for either Anthony or Daniel. They did a great job. I do have a concern about the working conditions of their mechanics. My wife and I noticed about 4-5 technicians doing the repairs in a garage that was basically a metal box with no fans or air conditioning. That day it was about 105 degrees. My heart goes out to those poor guys that have to work in that kind of heat. They should get those fellas some coolers. The mechanics and guys like Anthony are the heart beat of Pep Boys and should be valued. read more

I have to give them 5 stars for sure. They definitely deserve it! It might be bad to say, but I've been to PepBoys about 4 times in the past two months. But every time I go, they have the best costumer service! Even if I might be having a bad day, they make it up with their incredible costumer service and positive enthusiasm. I have to give a special recognition to Luz & Miguel, these two individuals are the ones that have helped me and I thank them for being so helpful and friendly. One day I pulled over and Miguel seemed to be off work, but he saw me in the parking lot and was willing to see if I needed help and give me advise about the problem I was having with my car. He seems very knowledgable. Yesterday I went to PepBoys to get a new tire and Luz was incredibly helpful by trying to find the best deal for me. Luz is awesome and extremely caring, the only bad thing is that she is a Raiders fan. haha College students might not have the best budget, but they understand that and they always try to find what's better for you. Manny is amazing! One of the kindest person I've ever met. I got a hole in my gas tank and had it replace here at pep boys Merced. Due to the manufacturing problems (at no fault of pep boys) the new gas tank had a leak. Manny was very patient and worked really hard to get my money back from the gas tank manufacture. He did everything I asked for from mailing me the orders to quickly doing a follow up. I really appreciated that. Gas tank manufacture ended up only giving me $103.38 (the gas tank I originally paid for was 190.37). Without saying a word, Manny gave me $86.77 from his own store's money to make up the difference. He didn't have to do that since it was't pep boys fault. Not only that, Manny had the checks mailed out over night so I received it the next morning. I had never written a review on yelp before. This is my first one. Therefore, this goes to show how deeply impress I was for all the help Manny has gave me. Defiently one of the best customer service experience I've ever had. I went in the other day to get my car serviced. my husband is over seas, so I find myself trying to keep both our cars maintained. I was so scared, you see all hear all these stories of women getting taken advantage of. I was being helped by Paul, I explained it was my first time taking my car to get serviced and usually my husband takes care of it. He smiled and said he was glad I chose to come to them. He checked me in, got me an oil change, my car takes synthetic and I thought it was going to be a fortune and that they would try to convince me to spend hundreds more. Needless to say I spent no were near what I thought. As far as the lies and the fake upsales, Paul showed me my air filter which was dirty and asked if I wanted it replaced. He was so thorough and polite, didn't pressure me and really answered all my questions. I told him I needed tires and a tune up very soon and I will be coming to him only from now on. I had an emergency with my radiator. I was basically stranded on a weekend and couldn't get to the dealer, so I went to the closest place of my break down that was open: Pep Boys in Merced. They told me no problem, they could fix it. At first they said it would be ready that day. When I called later that day, they said I was going to have to come back the next day. When I called the next day, they needed more time. All in all they ended up keeping my vehicle for a week. When I got it back, they had not secured the brackets on the radiator properly so it was loose, and had not hooked up the battery properly so it ended up dying after a couple days. They also tried to charge me a lot more than I had agreed to pay, and when I drove off, the radiator light was on. I asked them why the light was on if the radiator was fixed, and they didn't know. For the amount of time they kept it, I could have taken it in to the dealer and had it done right. read more

I was traveling through Merced, CA. on a Saturday night when I got a flat tire on the 99 South. Was towed by Hitech Road Service (very nice gentleman) to Pep Boys where they were closing for the nite, he told them my situation, informed them that I would have to sleep there in the car till they opened in the morning. The Service Manager "Juan Ortiz" told the tow truck driver that they would take care of me. Well I want to say if anyone travels through Merced,CA. and needs any Auto help please go to Pep Boys. Oscar from the service department at Pep Boys was so helpful and he smiled when he spoke with me. I asked if he could put air in my 6 tires on my motor home. He was busy working on a car, but took the time to let me know he would help me when he was done. He stated it wouldn't be that long. Within 5 minutes he motioned for me to drive my motor home close to the air hose. He filled all 6 tires as we chatted. He gave me a few tire tips as well. Thank you Oscar FYI, I went to Costco tire department who also told me they would put air in my tires. They were friendly as well, but unfortunately they were unable to help. They informed me that Pep Boys would have the adapter I needed to fill the tires. They apologized for the inability to help. Thank you Costco for the referral to Pep Boys. I had a blow out last week driving from Fresno to Sacramento. I ended up at Pep Boys, at closing time, on a Friday night. The staff was very helpful, but one employee definitely out shined the rest. The blowout had caused my headlight wiring to be ripped out, so I had no lights for night time driving. I had to get home that night, I was traveling with two cats, and had to open very early the following day. I had no money for a hotel, I was screwed. Anthony Barrera drove me, and the cats, all the way back to Sacramento, to ensure I got home safely. He even helped me make arrangements to get my car back to Sacramento too. I drive I5 several times a year, as a college student from Southern California going to school in Northern California. I had a tire blow out halfway down I5 and had to find a nearby tire place open on a Sunday. Drove over on the spare, Pep Boys Merced had tires ready in-stock, a B3GO sale deal with free install, and were able to get me back on the road in about an hour, even in the late afternoon on a Sunday! I took my Honda in to have the alternator replaced on a Sunday, and Patrick, Manny, and Jim were great! The repair took a lot longer than any of us (myself AND the service staff) thought it would, but they were great about keeping me informed and stayed working on the car for an extra hour after closing until the repair was done since I needed my car for work the following day. I hadn't been in the Merced Pep Boys store for a long time. I needed to get a tire repaired. I had originally purchased the tire in Modesto. Both the manager and salesman were very courteous and went above and beyond normal customer service to get my tire repaired quickly. Chris found the part at a store few towns away at a reasonable price, got the part and had it installed for a fraction of the price I was expecting. Bought 4 new tires and one of my studs broke, this wasn't their fault.
