I went to Pep Boys a few days ago for an oil change, and as usual, I had a very pleasant experience. Juan Ortiz greeted me with a smile right away, and when I told him what I was there for, he said he would take care of everything and get me on the road again before I knew it. Juan explained the differences between the different types of oil that they have at Pep Boys, and he recommended the best one for my car and for my budget. I really appreciated the knowledge he gave me. The employees finished my oil change within an hour, and I noticed a definite improvement in my gas mileage after the service. They were very nice when I first entered the building. I told them what was wrong with car and they found my wheels were not aligned and something was off with my wheels. They told me that the repair was going to cost around $360 and 10 minutes later I got a call that they needed to use a special kit for my car that was going to cost another $180. I ended up with a bill of more than $500. I wish they were more explicit on what they were going to do to my car and what the price ended up being. On top of all that they ended up finishing 1 hour later than what they had promised and caused me to be 30 minutes late to work (each time I asked when they would finish they would say "a few more minutes"). Pepboys has unethical business practices, performs unprofessional services, and has zero liability for their negligence when they destroy your vehicle. On or about of February 20th 2019, I had called prior to debrief what service I wanted to be done to my car "Oil Change." I provided them with newly purchased high quality oil, oil filter by Bosch and the additive. The additive is needed because newer generation of motor oils currently lack OEM specifications for older type of vehicles. I stated verbatim on the phone and in person before they rendered the service, place only 5oz of the 3x concentrate of ZDDP into my oil, which is also stated verbatim on the back of the bottle for this make and model.. They did the exact opposite, I witnessed them through the window putting the entire contents of the bottle in my car even when I gave clear and concise instructions. Immediately I spoke directly with their mechanic where I mentioned that from innumerous research that by doing so can cause severe damage to the catalytic converter, whom he responded that information was incorrect. Less than 2 weeks later, my car now guzzles 8 gallons of fuel within 80 mile trip plus no more wind coming out of my exhaust pipe. Diagnosis: Damaged Catalytic Convert. Pepboys happily declined to repair the inflicted damages to my vehicle. Enter at your own risk. Inability to read, inability to render adequate and professional services. read more

On December 29th I had an appointment to have my brakes checked. Tony greeted me and we discussed the problem and repair options. I explained that my Mother had been checked into the hospital the day before and I only had a 2 hour window. We agreed on the work that would be done and the required time. Not only was the work completed within the designated time - it was nearly 30 minutes early! Tony was a pleasure to work with, friendly and very knowledgeable. Bought a set of tires-Was told ball joints were worn so they could not perform an alignment. My wife brought the vehicle back after 6k for a "Free" tire rotation. She was told the tires were wearing funny and that an alignment would be needed. They performed the alignment at $89.99 on worn ball joints that as soon as she drove off the lot was lost. A good mechanic would have never performed an alignment without first replacing the ball joints. It's like throwing money out the window. A company that puts profits over customers and ethics is a dying one. I have requested a full refund. read more

Went in for a full synthetic oil change with a $49.99 coupon after a $20 mail in rebate. Instead, I was charge for $97.84 because my car has a 6.4 quart engine oil capacity and the coupon only covers up to 5 quart. I don't mind and understand about it. I tried to use the coupon to get the $20 rebate, which was valid until 12/15/15, but instead, I was given a "Pep boy VISA Rebate Claim" form to fill out. According to the rebate claim form, I would receive a $30 mail in rebate for services between November 8, 2015 to November 25, 2015. I had an oil change done yesterday on December 3, 2015. I'm not sure if it's still valid anymore because of the date. I tried to contact pep boy about it and they said it's not valid anymore because of the date. Service was great, but the website has false advertisement. Did not get a rebate as advertised on their website and on their coupon (valid until 12/15/15). read more

Where to begin.... Did not think that one business could be so bad at selling to the public in all possible ways. First, the website is a complete mess if you are looking for car parts. You have to go looking through menus to even start a part search. The site is geared toward selling you tires or services. The sad part is that they actually have a good inventory of parts at good prices and since they don't rely on house brands, the quality is actually better. As for buying tires, they want an installation appointment before they will give a complete price quote, so no go there. Buying tires in the store is no better since they have few tires on display and their service counter is usually swamped since they only have two registers and a tiny waiting room. I've shopped at Pep Boys since the 80's and this is the worst they've ever been. It's a good place to buy parts and cheap tires just be prepared to wait a long time and be up sold at the service counter. read more

My daughter took in her Sentra for an oil change on 7/28. the next morning she calls me (I was in LA), the car is smoking . to make a long story short, they left the oil cap OFF!,and a shop towel under the hood. WAIT it gets better, she called to explain her situation , was told if she bought the oil, they would not charge her to put it in !. no apology , no cleaning of the under the hood that was drenched in oil ! This store has horrible customer service!! I had purchased some touch up paint for my car. The paint was real watery and didn't work. I went back to get a refund and was told once the package was opened it was not refundable. They did not mention this during the time of purchase. The manager offered for me to do an exchange. Got stuck in Merced returning to LA. AAA tow truck driver determined that it was an alternator. Towed us here (only place open on a sunday in merced). I have installed these so knew it wouldn't take long and we would be on our way. Upon arriving we told that it would be no problem and were promised that we would be back in LA that night. They didn't inform us that they were going to charge the battery before installing the alternator. At 5:30 (they closed at 6, they had been working on the car since 1 pm). They informed us that they wouldn't be able to finish. So we were stuck in Merced and had to find a place to stay. Found a motel 6 right near the railroad tracks (all night is was like "My Cousin Vinny" with the trains going by). It still took them over 2 hours in the morning to finish the installation. The service department was very poor at communicating what was going on with the repair. Made promises they didn't keep about finishing the repair and even got an attitude when we pressed them for info. The only positive part of this experience was the store manager, Manny Dhanota who got involved in the morning He gave us a discount on the repair for our inconvenience and apologized for our experience. I would not recommend this pep boys for auto service. read more

As a past employee for this corporation let me help u with the tips and tricks for them. If you guess in the back of your mind that it's ALL about the money to then your correct. To them it's about profits and sales(sounds fair) But they go so far to forget about their customers and employees that drive the place. Sure you can get decent service with the right kind of people but we're trained to up sell in EVERYTHING!!! The moment u step in no matter what your car problems are they will find sum idiotic reason to suggust u stuff that has nothing to do with why your their in the first place. Remember the more they up sell the more sales they make even at the cost for their unfortunate customers. I'll be wary on the service they provide down to managment to mechanics and service advisors doing some shady stuff that the customer doesn't even need. I've seen brand new air filters changed just cause the customer said yes not cause it needed changed. Breaks my heart, ooh and they low wage their mechanics(ask the tech how their labor pay is lol) so services like OIL CHANGES, flat repairs, tire rotations and brake inspections pay basically nothing so the mechanics so incentive for fast,thorough service is never there. If you do want service i would suggust to get multiple quotes so you'll have an idea on If they will probably try to pull a fast one.But no worrys the corporation just got bought off so hopefully this new company can set a new path for fairness both the staff and customers that make the business in the first place. read more

I needed front brake pads installed, but was told that I needed a $15 brake inspection before they could work. The $15 would be taken from the cost of the brake repair, though. After two hours and ten minutes of inspection, I was informed that front brake pad installation would cost $250. I might not know cars, but I'm also not entirely stupid. I took my van to Big-O tires a block away and the job was completed in an hour for $150. read more

I bought a full set of tires here and several months later I was having a lot of noise coming from the rear left of the vehicle. I assumed that the rear left tire had become unbalanced and since I was told rotation and balancing was free for the life of the tires I returned to have it checked out. I was told I would need to leave the vehicle for about an hour to have this done, which was fine. I made an appointment and later returned. I dropped of the vehicle and an hour later I returned to pick up my vehicle and noticed that the noise had not gone away and was still very loud. Having eliminated the possibility of an unbalanced wheel I made an appt. with my mechanic to have the issue resolved. Later that same evening, just to be absolutely sure it was not an issue with the wheel, I swapped out my full size spare with the rear left wheel and took it for a test drive. The noise was completely gone. Not only had the employees at Pep Boys not balanced OR rotated the tires but they also had me show up to an appointment, arrange for transportation to and from that appointment, only to keep my vehicle for an hour and give it back to me completely untouched. I returned the next day and spoke to the manager who had the problem wheel removed and verified it was way out of balance and seeing as how the noise continued coming from the same area of the vehicle the tires had also not been rotated. He was very apologetic and offered to replace the tire on the unbalanced wheel. Had I not wanted to verify for myself that the problem was not simply an unbalanced wheel as I had suspected I would have spent an unknown amount for a mechanic to ultimately tell me that Pep Boys had not done their job. I will never buy anything there again and will advise others to do the same. Completely unacceptable. I would give a 0 rating if the app allowed me to do so. read more

I came in to have my front driver side tire replaced, in doing so the tire to the right front passenger was damaged when they placed my vehicle on the rail. Causing it to scratch the rim and chip my tire. I didn't noticed until I got home. Once I realized I immediately brought it back. Once I arrived the gal who helped me picked my tire was so understanding and very apologetic. I feared that they wouldn't help me or that I had to fixed my tire out of pocket. But this wasn't the case. Alissa is one of the workers here she was great. She scheduled me in the next morning. Got here she was here with her daughter because it was her day of but she came in anyway to make sure I would get taken care of. Wow I was completely blown away. The whole staff here is amazing. I understand accidents happen and this could have happen anywhere but the fact that they replaced my tire and fixed my rim at no cost was pretty neat. Yes I did had to come in. But I have experienced other places and they aren't just has helpful and expect you to fix their mistakes. I was in need of some major car repairs but since I work all week, it is difficult to find a place that is open on the weekends. I called in to make an appointment on a sunday (only place I could find was open) and I was happy to have them tell me a play by play of what would be done to my car. After all my shocks, brakes, struts, and tires were done I was ready to go but they also brought to my attention which they were able to fix for me. The only that was a bit of an inconvience was the miscommunication of which battery would go in my car; I did end up with the correct one just after a few tries of exchanging it due to the terminal settings. Overall a pretty helpful and positive experience, I will definitely return here for car repair. I live in Mariposa and commute to the Bay Area once a week, so I've had experiences with Pep Boys both in Merced & Hayward. Hands down the Merced Pep Boys is the one I'd rather go to. I recently had to have a new catalytic converter put in, that's a major expense, the quote was in line with the research I did, so I went to Merced Pep Boys. The man at the front, Mark, is professional and willing to go that extra mile,( he's also really good with hysterical customers). Mark is willing to problem solve customer issues and get what needs done. He also introduced me to the young genius who did the actual work; ask for Alphonso, he's a wizard, these 2 men, Mark & Alphonso are definitely 5 star. The reason for taking a star off is Pep Boys appointment system, Pep Boys corporate needs to do a better job to get the on line appointment system in sync with the individual shops. read more

Later I talked to another mechanic. Told him what was wrong with my car and how much it was. He confirmed that they ripped me off!! Also, they tried to recomend me some bullshit that didn't even have to be done. After the job they did on my car I noticed that I had some screws missing on the engine allowing my ac hose and some other hose to rub on the belt!!! These guys are trash dont go here!!!!! I brought my car in for a routine oil change because I knew I was going to be doing some heavy commuting. I was greeted and helped by the Service Department Manager, Juan Ortiz. He made sure my car was worked on in a timely manner and suggested that I also get Fuel cleaner as well due to me commuting. Everything else was in good shape. I'm very impressed with the professionalism of the entire crew whenever I go there. Unfortunately, a few days later I noticed a puddle of fresh oil on my garage floor. I immediately addressed it to Juan and he recommended that I bring my car in to have them check it out. He apologized for the inconvenience. I brought my car back in and Juan made sure it got fixed. The oil filter had a kink and the oil was seeping through. I left a very happy customer. Unfortunately, the very next day I seen a small puddle of fresh oil on my.garage floor again. I notified Juan and he apologized and told me to bring my car in at my earliest convenience. I was on my way to work so, I dropped my car off and had someone take me to work. I told him that my lunch was at 1pm. My car was done and fixed before then. My oil plug was damaged. It was a bit of an inconvenience for me with my tight schedule. But I'm very satisfied that my car problem was rectified. The parts were replaced and all the oil and fuel cleaner was replenished, with no questions asked. The following day, I started my commute to San Jose and I haven't had any problems with my oil leaking. Thank you Juan Ortiz for handling that for me!! I went Tuesday, 12/2/14 to get my brakes serviced on my car. The shop was fairly busy so the store manager (Doug?) helped me out by starting my paperwork since my appointment was already a few minutes overdue. He handed me off to Ashley who was EXCELLENT at handling customer service. She made sure everything would get taken care of and got my car to Manuel, who assured me the service would be done in less time than previously quoted me. After my car was serviced, Manuel let me know about other issues he saw with my car and advised I bring it back for preventative service before anything else gets wildly out of hand, which I thought was pretty cool. Because Ashley was busy with another customer, the store manager rang me up, let me know about the Rewards program, gave me a $30.00 rebate on the parts used on my car, and also gave me 50% off labor for the preventative maintenance Manuel advised should I bring my car back in a decent amount of time. All-in-all amazing customer service, quick and expedited automotive service and a good experience. The Pep Boys in Merced ,Ca. Rock!!!! I am happy to say, that I've finally found a auto shop that I trust and am extremely happy with. I have been taking my vehicle off and on for various maintenance and supplies to Pep Boys in Merced. I would choose other auto shops because they offered special deals or out of location convenience . However on this particular day , Saturday, February 27th. I decided that there was no other reason but for me to choose Pep Boys for all my auto maintenance business. Saturday I had arrived, later in the afternoon, with a doughnut spare and three other bald tires. I needed new tires put on ASAP. I was due in Monterey, CA. in the am. Ashley the store manager assured me that my vehicle would be done by the end of the day. Even with the store being extremely busy and many vehicles in line Ashley and her crew did everything and anything to get my vehicle back on the road. Even if it meant staying over closing The Pep Boys team got the job done. This store is fantastic!!!! Great customer service and a extreme amount of integrity from the whole crew . The customer service with Ron (service manager) was excellent and far above the call of duty. I blew an engine in my toyota forerunner then fell into the unemployment line. Ron and staff was very understanding and gave me time to pay for the engine and installation. They kept my truck at the shop and I made payments until the truck was finihsed. I don't believe any other company would have done that. Pepboys Merced was truly understand and accomadating in every way. I finally got my truck and it runs like a gem. I needed new tires on my car and was calling around for price quotes, I called Pep Boys and spoke with Maria on the phone, she was very helpful explaining the differences between the tire brands and helping me choose some that will best fit my needs, I commute almost 150 miles a day so I wanted tires that will last a long time. She gave me a quote that was lower then any others that I had gotten. She said that she could even schedule me an appointment for the tires to get installed later that same day, I gladly agreed. When I showed up for my appointment I was happily greeted by Maria and she got my car in the shop right away, less then an hour later I was on my way with my new tires installed. So do not honor the manufactures warranties unless you are the purchaser. now I'm stuck with a fairly new battery that doesnt work. I have been here twice now and both times have been a bad experience. The first time I was getting my oil changed, tires rotated, and brakes redone. They said it would be about 2 hours, ended up taking 5. I mistakenly stayed in the waiting room for all 5 hours. I was not happy by the time I left but at least I was given a 10% discount for the inconvenience. However, about an hour and a half after I left and was at work, they called me saying a small part was found on the floor and they were afraid it might belong to my car! Since I couldn't get off work, I had to come back the next morning and spend an hour and a half waiting for someone to figure out where this piece went. The next visit was just to get my brake light switch replaced, seemed easy enough. I dropped it off on a saturday at 11:30 in the morning and I knew they were a bit busy so I made sure I had someone pick me up. It took them 4 hours just to do an inspection and call me to tell me what I knew already needed to be fixed. Once again I was told it would be another 2-2.5 hours to fix it but I was promised my car would be ready by that night. I waited and waited for the phone call but no call came. It was 8:30pm by the time I called the store to figure out what happened, and of course there was no answer. The store had closed for the night at 8. No notification of the status of my car or that they needed to keep it over night. Beyond angry. They have definitely lost this customer. read more
