Pep Boys in Vallejo are complete lifesavers. I called ahead because I got stranded in Richmond at work with a bad battery. Got one here after barely making it with a jump. They had my battery at a decent price and not only that Eric, the service manager, and the mechanic Isaac were willing to work with me with FREE installation even though they were tired and needing to rest at 6:30pm on a Thursday night! They are true lifesavers for this High School Teacher to get back on the road tommorrow to teach my History classes! All I can say is Thank you from the bottom of my heart for being there at 6:30pm to help with my car troubles! Service has hit a brick wall with some staff and basic repairs are less than standard quality. Oil change they put two courts over max, thank god I had a pressure gauge on dash that shows way to high so never left repair bay... air conditioning service on slow leak, they did put in dye on recharge and I just brought it back in to find the leak and this kid in service that I swear never opened the hood on a car before trying to tell me the next step is recharge it... huh, than I told him a second time that they did that with the dye a few months ago and now you use a UV light to find the leak, he goes a what??? That's when I said forget it, I'll do it myself.... see yah!! UPDATE: I decided to give them another shot a couple of months later, not only to change my oil but try again on the air conditioner. Ha! Went bad to worse. I made an appointment, got a friend to meet me their to hove me a ride home, Service guy argued with on how many quarts of oil goes in my truck its 10 quarts but his book says 12, I told him that was the problem last time I overfilled it by 2 quarts, I know my truck and it takes only 10 quarts. Than the other service guy came out and overheard our argument and asked make model of my truck than said "we cannot change your oil cause your truck is over 10k pounds in weight and their lift cant lift the truck" i said it did not way 10k and even if if did, how the hell did you change the oil the last two times? He said i don't know but we can't lift your Truck so we cant change your oil. I said now were done, never coming back again... i found a great shop that takes some pride in their work and excited to work on my Truck. They could not believe when i told them the story, They said by the time pep-boys put the Truck on the lift and lifted it, they would've already had the oil drained and new filter installed... read more

I have to commend Pep Boys for a great website, but that's about it. Website has a host of information and very intuitive. I was even able to make an appointment and received confirmation via email...GREAT! However, after standing in line for a while, I was greeted with indifference. Not that I expected cartwheels or anything but a smile and a simple "good afternoon, what can I do for you" wouldn't have been too much to ask for imho. I was then told that they do not have my reservation and was told that their system doesn't work? I was then told that "we're usually booked 3 days out". Oddly enough they were able to see what I had made the appointment for? I was then told that "maybe" they could fit me in in a couple of hours??? When I asked if I could come back 2 1/2 hours later, if that would work for them? I was told "I'm not messing with the schedule". And then the audacity to give me a two hour turn around time to fix plus they were "running behind". What's the point of the appointment then? My check engine light went on and they were able to tell me what was wrong with my vehicle, and I was able to get my car towed from my house to the shop through their connected towing services. They walked me through what happened with my engine and were able to finish the project within a couple of hours. this place really screwed me... i came to buy tires and have them installed. Chris the service manager helped me the whole time i was there. i was told that the lug nuts in my 2006 dodge charger was hard to take off and they could damage it. i told him that he needs to tell his tech to be careful and he told me they are always careful. i was there at 9 am and left past 12 pm and they were only able to take 2 of the lug nuts off within the time frame i was there. then he reports back to me stating that they are having a hard time to take them off and i am going to need new lug nuts. i said that was fine and he did not even tell me what was going on after that, i had to ask! so after all of that when i went back to my car i noticed a few things. my side skirt was damaged due to there lift and my lug nuts were damaged. i do not recommend this place for tire service, good deals on the tires but do not get them installed here! if the store district manager sees this please respond back to this because i want to file a complaint! because i was left out not knowing what to do because your store service manager got pissy and just left me outside!!! literally!!! read more

A huge Thank you to Chris! My battery had died and he drove to where I was within two mins for a quick charge. He followed me to the shop and I got a new battery fairly quickly. Chris has helped me with tires several times over the years and is always courteous and very knowledgeable of the products. While waiting for my car to be serviced on an extremely hot day, I noticed that many of the customers were quite impatient, yet the entire staff were all very calm and understanding. My mother brought her Mazda in for a tune up and it went in running fine. She went to pick it up and I came out running bad. The "check engine" light was on as was another warning light. So she took it back and they tried to say it came in that way. NOT! Then the master tech gave her and my father total attitude, saying it wasn't the fact that they did the tune up that caused the problem. So my mother sat there 2 more hours only find out they were using the wrong spark plugs, and don't have he right ones in stock. What kind of auto parts stores doesn't stock the right plugs? So now they have to keep the car 2 days until they get the correct parts. My mother has to borrow a car to get to work. Total inconvenience! Don't recommend, never coming back. read more

I made an appointment online stating the issue my transmission light came on and would like them to perform a diagnostic test to see if the car just needed fluid or the transmission needed to be replaced. I received a confirmation and brought the car in an hour before the appointment was scheduled I went over with the store employee exactly what the issue was and what I wanted them to do, he told me they would contact me when it was finished. I came back after two hours to see what their progress was the same person came up to and said"Our mechanics only remove and replace transmissions " with a smile. The service was horrible. No follow up or alerting you of the status of your car. My tire had a nail in it. They didn't carry the tire so they ordered it to come in the next day. The worst customer service I have experienced in a long time. Two hours had passed and they didn't even touch my vehicle, and that is with an established appointment. Had to cancel my appointment and leave after checking in on the status of my vehicle, since I was told it could be another hour before my car could even be looked at. Should have know when I made an appointment and was waiting in line for 40 minutes before anyone said hi. Even the guy at the register was like "come here and I'll help you" (rudely) when it was finally my turn. When I said I had an appointment at 9 he looked at me like so... finally he said what do you need? I said my rear brakes done! He told me it would need a brake inspection first. There was only 1 customer service rep and he was on the phone for 10 minutes authorizing a $35 check for an elderly woman. When it was finally my turn, I commented that he needed more help. Took four hours to mount and install 4 new tires on a regular truck. I know from having previously worked in the mechanic industry that this job should take no more than 1.5 hours. When quoted for the job, the counter guy said it should take maybe 2 hours as they were busy that day. I had an appointment for 12pm and did not get out of there until 430 pm! Part of the delay was that the Matco tool truck arrived during the time my vehicle was being serviced and when I went to go see what was taking so long, all of the mechanics were checking out the new tools with no one working! This went on for probably 30-40 minutes. Do not waste your money or time here...trust me go to one of the many other places around. Worst service department ever. The service here is a rip off the sell you on a diagnostics test then they don't actually tell you what's wrong with your car. They suggest things to you to your car doesn't actually need and give you a list of what they think is required( not off of the diagnostics test but what they recommend by the mileage. Which means if you already did it already they tell you it's required anyways. Waste of money and they are ripping people off. Charging me twice as much as the dealer would for basic maintenance like a tune up. Also you have to wait for ever to get recognized in the service department. Glad I didn't waste more money here. After paying the bill I realized they charged me for the Lyft so I called and talked to the "manager" Justin. He told me to come back and he would refund my money. When I went back he refused to refund me because my bill wasn't over $50. What a poor excuse for a manager. A real manager would have found a way to make the customer happy. I'm surprised to see this location has a low rating, as they saved me BIG time the other day and were so kind/helpful. While driving home on Monday, I hit something on I-80 right past Red Top Road that blew out my run-flat tire. The PSI went from 37 to 0 in 30 seconds, but the tire wasn't entirely deflated thanks to the run-flats. I was able to get to Pep Boys in Vallejo just off 1-80 near the 37 interchange. They were booked with appointments, but could see how flustered I was. They told me they didn't have my tires in stock as they are typically special order, but they checked their system to find a tire that would fit my wheel to help get me home. Run-flats allow you to drive 50 miles, but I was more than 50 miles from home (my car doesn't come with a spare because of the run-flat tires). None of the dealers in the area had the tires in stock, so I had no choice but to stay where I was until a special order could come through (not realistic) or get a temporary tire to get home. I got quite an education in tires from these guys and was so grateful for their knowledge and assistance, and for being so kind to me as I was freaking out. They sold me a tire at a discount, got it on my car, boxed up my busted tire so I could make a claim with my insurance company or dealer (if tire was under warranty), and got me on my way very quickly. I will be able to get another run-flat tire installed today or tomorrow, but am so grateful to these guys for helping me out! On September 4, 2014 I took my vehicle in for a tune-up and oil change at Pep Boys in Vallejo CA.. I placed my order with Ryan. I explained to him that I had recently purchased the vehicle and that I wanted to get the job done by professionals because I wanted to take it to Oregon to visit a friend and I hadn't had a complete inspection done since purchasing the vehicle. I explained to Ryan that I was pregnant and had a two year old and didn't want to wind up on the side of the road somewhere. I also explained to Ryan my concerns with the vehicle in vivid detail. Ryan told me no problem mam, we will go ahead and do a complimentary vehicle inspection and let you know if there is anything that would keep you from driving out of state. When I picked up the vehicle, the employee working in the shop was already in his personal vehicle. I had to go to his car and ask him where my keys were so that I could retrieve my vehicle. I asked him how everything went and he explained that everything was fine, everything went great. I then drove my vehicle to Ashland Oregon that night. I spent several days up there at a friend's house. I did not drive my vehicle at all while I was there. I drove my car back to Vallejo and went straight home. It is only a five hour drive. The next day I went to my class and then picked my kids up from school, my car started over-heating, smoking, immediately after I got my kids. We had to park at a shopping center. While waiting for it to cool down I called pep boys and spoke with Ryan, he explained to me that after placing my order with him on the fourth his shift ended shortly after I left and that he did not relay all of the appropriate information to the next worker who actually worked on my car. He told me to bring the vehicle back for an inspection. I had to get home to my two year old so I was not able to bring it in until the next day. When I brought it back they explained to me that there was no coolant what so ever in my radiator and that my fan did not come on while I was driving. Then they proceeded to tell me that the head gasket appeared to be damaged because of it. I said that they must not have done the vehicle inspection on the fourth and he admitted that no, they probably didn't . I also said that shouldn't they have noticed the fan in the vehicle inspection and they said yes. I believe that an inspection was never done on my vehicle until I brought it back with major issues. The only pristine part of that car was the engine when I bought it. I am not currently working but I am taking a career oriented class. I am having to walk with a very heavy backpack while pregnant and it is not easy for me at all. This is a big problem for me. Ryan has admitted to me that he believes that the inspection was not done. His manager Jarret has been very uncooperative and has offered no real solution to this problem. He is trying to blame me for it. I am not a mechanic, that is why I brought it to them and paid them $200.00. I had my car towed to my home. It is so frustrating, not only are there still no fluids in my car, but now my battery is completely dead and my vehicle is severely damaged and I have a severe headache on my hands. The only reason I am giving 2 stars instead of 1 is because of employee, Chris who helped me at the service counter when I arrived. Chris was friendly, helpful and very nice. I needed to get my turn signal replaced. It was a Tuesday morning at 11am, I figured it shouldn't take longer than an hour. as they didn't look busy. Chris did let me know it would be about an hour, I told him I was going to do some shopping at Costco and would be back. After I returned from my Costco trip, I waited an additional hour. I waited in the "lounge" - don't wait here, it's gross. Coffee maker is out of order, the water filter needed to be changed at the fountain - so no drinks.. although the water/coffee area was filthy. Finally I get a text that my car is done, really a text? I am sitting right here...I go up to the register and the guy checking me out tells me "they found some play in the front", it will damage my car and do I want him to quote me". I ask him, "what does that mean"? I guess something is loose? I pay for the turn signal replacement, pay and that's it. No one takes me outside to show me the turn signals are working or bothers to go into detail about "the play in my car". So if you want to wait twice as long, sit in a dirty waiting area and then have an idea there might be another issue, than this Pep Boys is the place to go. I will not be going back. read more

On July 30, 2014 I had an occasion to visit the Pep Boys in Vallejo, CA to have my cars charging system checked out. I called and spoke with a young lady which I explained my issue to. She told me to come on down. When I arrived at the store I stood in line waiting to talk with a technician. There were three people ahead of me and two technicians helping other customers. Additional customers came into the store and the line for the service technicians grew to about 10 people. We all patiently waited while I saw the female technician repeatedly go to other workers asking questions that apparently addressed the issue with the customer she was working with. Several times the other workers came over and assisted her. The other technician finished his customer then answered the phone and stayed on the phone with the caller for about 4-5 minutes. Meanwhile the line I am standing in continues to grow. An elderly customer comes out of the waiting room and the technician who was on the phone begins to help him. Meanwhile the female technician is still with her customer and still going to other workers only to come back and continue with her customer. Still all of us in line are trying to be very patient. As we begin to talk about how long we have been in line and how it makes no sense that it is taking so long to write up a service order. One of the people tell me se has been at Pep Boys for 2 1/2 hours for an oil change and tire rotation. She said she had an appointment at 9:30am and her car is still not ready. She said her car was in the air on the hoist for 30 minutes before anyone began working on it. Time ticks on and the line does not move an inch. Less than 20 feet away is the cashier counter and two people are there taking periodic customers. One of them turns out to be the manager. After at least 30 minutes of waiting in line I begin to voice my concerns over the long wait. I am told that they don't have enough staff available. I tell them that this is no way to treat customers and they need to do a better job. I tell them that it is ridiculous to have to wait this long to have a technician write up a service repair invoice. I tell them to look at how long the line is. At this time the female technician goes over to the manager and talks with him and he comes over to deal with the customer she has been with since I first arrived. The manager takes over that customer and she takes the next person in line. The other technician finishes with the elderly customer and he takes the guy in front of me. I walk over to the manager to voice my concerns of the long wait and poor customer service. He then tells me he can help me. I tell him he didn't see a need to help while I was standing in the long line with the other customers for the last 30 minutes. I tell him he can't help me and I would like his name and the District Managers name so I can file a complaint. He gives me his card and when I ask for the DM's info he tells me to call 1-800 Pep Boys. II leave the store and immediately call 1-800 Pep Boys. I am on hold with Customer Service for over 15 minutes and I finally leave a message to have them call me. This is inexcusable. Customers should not be treated in such a poor manner. I will NEVER step foot in Pep Boys again. read more
