Our absolute favorite local spot. Great atmosphere outside on the patio and outdoor bar, and even when it's hot out there's always a nice breeze coming off the lake. Food is outstanding every time. We love the Chicken Nuggies and their smash burgers. I've also had the tacos and enjoy those every time and for ~$5 it's the perfect little snack. This place is pretty busy with outdoor seating, but you choose your own table. The waitress was really nice and attentive as well. It's kinda loud in there but that's because they play sport games. The chik Philly with the cherry and banana peppers was such a great addition. Both of our sammis were juicy and delicious. My girlfriend loved their sandwich and said all the ingredients paired so well. The cheese melted so well into all the toppings. I love having Gnarly Barley in the neighborhood. One of the best upgrades they've made recently is the patio area...it feels comfortable, relaxed, and almost like hanging out in your own backyard. Being able to overlook the park and catch a sunset while enjoying a drink with friends is a huge bonus. I'm not in love with every item on the menu, but I keep coming back for the sandwiches and nachos, which are always solid choices. The service is consistently quick, and the staff does a great job accommodating guests, especially when it comes to putting games on the TVs. Ambiance was AMAZING, we sat outside and it was absolutely beautiful! Service was exactly what you would expect from a place like this. Slow and not very attentive. The food is sadly where this place really lacked. I got the burger, which was a mash burger and I wasn't aware of that (could have totally been my mistake but don't recall it being listed). My boyfriend got the OG taco. The guy informed us it only came with one taco. $5 for one taco. He got two tacos, and keep in mind it does NOT come with any sides. My boyfriend was left dissatisfied with his messily two tacos. He said they were also soggy as they did not heat the taco tortilla AT ALL. As for both dishes there was a serious lack of flavors... Snagged a seat at the indoor bar around noon on Saturday just before the rush. This spot gets busy quick, and the patio is always the first to go on a nice day, but the vibe inside is just as solid. There's seating inside and outside, but on a beautiful day outside is definitely where you want to be! Basically bar food, but elevated. I had a glass of Pinot Grigio along with the brisket and bacon, sammie. I switched out the regular mayo and got horseradish mayonnaise. I could've used a lot more of that on my sandwich, and the brisket could've been grilled a little bit less. It was a little bit chewy, but honestly really delicious! Service was on point. Omg, no doubt some of the absolute best sandwiches we have had in a while. My Dad is in ICU at ORMC so this wasn't too far to travel. On this view, four sandwiches weren't available due to the grill being down but we so didn't miss it. They were having a kitty adoption day and if I still lived in FL I would have taken one home lol. It's been a few years since we first tried the Gnarly Barley and they've really improved the space. The patio is expanded with its own bar and adorable dog friendly patio. On a breezy Friday afternoon it was a great space to grab lunch. We shared the pretzel app with pimento cheese and the Brisket Bacon Sandwich. The pretzels were perfect but the pimento cheese was just okay. The Brisket Bacon Sandwich is like a Philly cheese but better. So tasty and filling. First time at this location, and love the fun, modern vibe of this use to be dive bar... since the S Orange days. It was still pretty cool then. We stopped here for lunch, and the sandwiches are both very tasty. We ordered the spicy Cuban and a chicken club, and added on fries. The club was probably my fav of the two, juicy and well seasoned. I wanted to like this place so badly, but unfortunately, my experience wasn't great. The vibe of the space is great, and I love the decorations and Christmas lights. I am not usually someone who complains about service, but the service was practically non-existent here. We ran out of water pretty quickly after we ordered, and we were not able to get a refill until after our food was delivered. After that, we did not see our server again until it was time to pay. We started off with the corn dip, which was pretty good. I liked the chips a lot. My husband ordered the grilled cheese, which was very greasy and flavorless. The black bean tacos were extremely soggy on the bottom as soon as they were delivered to our table, and fell apart as I tried to eat them. The flavor of them was okay, but nothing super special. I have finally made it here. Great location in Ivanhoe Village. There are plenty of seating options inside and outside, with tables and bar seating available in both areas. At the moment there are seasonal drinks for the holidays to try. Several tacos to try along with burgers, chicken strips, and fries. Today I tried the brisket, chicken tinga and black bean tacos. Forgive my picture as I had already gotten started and ate one. lol. Coming in the door I was immediately greeted and was told I can sit anywhere inside or outside and that staff would find me. True to their word I was soon found and given drink recommendations. Upon hearing it was my first visit I was given recommendations for lunch. Both bar areas have at least three TV screens to catch a game. So for sports lovers this is a great hangout spot to catch up with friends and/or watch the game. A large group came in on a Sunday afternoon after church. There is a lot of outdoor seating but unfortunately it was raining so we sat inside. My friend asked the server about the previous location as she had visited it years earlier. Our sever explained how they had reused materials from the old floor and repurposed the into the table we ate at! This was a fascination piece of history. Service was quick and our food was out very soon. I was able to taste my meal and sample a few others. My taco was good, very meat filled! The fries with queso were outstanding! Two words... CHEESE. CURDS. The Gnarly Barley sits on Lake Ivanhoe and they are known for their yummy sandwiches and bar snacks. The cheese curds in particular are my favorite guilty pleasure. They are made with Scray Cheese cheddar curds directly from Wisconsin and served with ranch & marinara for dipping. They always hit the spot! I also really like their warm pretzels served with jalapeno pimento cheese. You really can't go wrong with any of their sammis. If you're a blue cheese lover, they make an incredible chunky blue cheese served on thier BBLT sandwich (thick sourdough, gnarly blue cheese, bacon, butter lettuce, and tomato). I also really enjoyed their brisket cheesesteak and "My Cousin Sammi" which is their take on an Italian sub (pepperoni, genoa salami, ham, turkey, provolone, red onion, lettuce, tomato, hot cherry peppers, banana peppers, pesto mayo, & sub dressing). In addition to sandwiches, they serve salads, tacos, beer, wine, & cocktails. I'm glad to see that this particular location in Ivanhoe Village has finally found a successful biz that has stuck around. We all used to think this building was cursed, but turns out it's the perfect home for The Gnarly Barley. Stopped in to try a few of the new items from the recent menu change and check out the new patio. I lost a few of my favorite items (veggie monster, snack attack fries, waffle fries) in the menu shift, so I was looking forward to trying some new stuff. The patio is beautiful --New TVs, a big full bar, and bartenders outside ready to serve you. We did lose some patio seating space, but gained some bar space. It's not as relaxing as it used to be, but it's a great place to catch a game. Now for the menu. First off the French fries. I think the new fries are fine, but not as good as the old waffle fries. I'd like to return to try the bar fries, but they just don't sound as appealing as the old snack attack. Next up, gnarly nachos. These were good! I was expecting a larger portion size, but the toppings were generous which made up for the smaller size. Overall they were a good snack. Finally the Chicken Nuggies. These were actually a happy change! I am not a huge sandwich lover so it's nice to have a more substantial menu item that isn't a sandwich. These were delicious and I'd absolutely order them again. Overall, a little sad about this update. If the old items are not brought back to the menu, I'd love to see some specials with old menu items. read more

The new patio and outside bar look fantastic, but unfortunately I have to bump my review down to 4 stars due to the unfortunate menu changes. All of the food mentioned in my previous review has been removed from the menu and is no longer available. I'm searching for something anywhere near as good as the items (veggie monster and snack attack fries) that were removed, and will update my review again if I find something. As a vegetarian, the options are pretty limited so I'm not holding out hope. The snack attack fries were replaced by the "bar fries" which include candied bacon and cured egg yolk. I'm not crazy about egg and didn't want to have to remove two things from the $13 fries so I didn't try them. The veggie monster was replaced by the stacked eggplant sammi, which can be made vegan. I'm glad they have this option for vegans, but I find the flavor of eggplant pretty boring. They still have the grilled cheese on the menu, which is fine but unmemorable--literally. I had it less than a week ago and actually forgot we ordered it until my wife reminded me. I wish they had replaced the grilled cheese instead of the veggie monster. We also were enjoying taking our dog here but while the new patio is awesome, it seems a little too cramped for her to enjoy. We will still be back for the always amazing service, good drinks, and fun events like Tuesday bingo, but without the veggie monster we crave will probably drop this from our regular rotation. read more
