Stopped here after going to Bengstons for a quick bite to eat. I got a taco salad with chicken, my boyfriend had beef hardshell tacos and the others in my party had another order of beef hard shell tacos and beef tostadas suizas. The taco salad was so delicious. The chicken was seasoned perfectly and didn't need any salsa. The cheese melted as I mixed the salad and it was amazing. The beef tacos were also very good. I didn't put hot sauce on them. Although I didn't try the tostada suiza, it was mentioned that it was delicious. I would love to go to Pepe's in the future just to try them. Both my wife and I have been decades long fans of Pepe's. But we have noticed each location is not the same. The atmosphere at this location is nice but very old. My wife actually prefers this but I don't. The place is somewhat large as they have dining only on one side and a bar and dining on the other side. The entrance is especially nice with high ceilings and a huge Christmas tree and other decorations. When arriving we were promptly greeted and seated. Our waitress Lizet B was amazing. Friendly, knowledgeable, attentive and fast. Our order was brought out by the owner who was just so so on the friendliness chart. One of the things I like here is that the table has a complimentary large bowl of salsa and fresh tortilla chips. And its mighty tasty too! I started out with the house Margarita for $10. It was typical and good but not anything special. For my entre I had the Fiesta Combo which consists of a tostada, enchilada suiza, taco and a tamale. All the usual meats are available for each. The portion size was big, the food was hot and brought out fast. Almost too fast. The flavor of each item was good but not great. A little bit too bland for my taste. The prices overall were a little high. Seems to be a trend nowadays though. A 3.5% service charge was added to the bill for paying by credit card. I also gave a 20% tip. Liked this Pepe's although it could easily be higher rated with better attention to detail. This outlet is owned/run by the same people who run the one in Tinley Park and Hickory Hills, so they do know what they are doing. This outlet is probably the newest in the group. It is located in a strip mall in Homer Glen just off Bell Road around 149th Street and is very nice and newish inside. The room is large and clean and well lit ... all in all very inviting. The food was the usual, very good Mexican food and the same as what you can get at the other outlets. We placed our order and two of the three came out wrong. Still good, but put together incorrectly. One in our party ordered beef tacos - and they came out chicken; another in our party ordered two tacos and was served one. The table also ordered the Alote corn cup, and that came out way late in the meal after we were nearly done. But like I said at the beginning, the food was very good, just not always what we ordered. We'll be back to give it another try because the food is quick and tasty, but we hope the kitchen works a bit on serving up what's ordered. The serving staff was also very nice. This is another of those places that is going to the 3% surcharge for those using credit cards. It still seems like a cheap kind of move for an otherwise classy place, but I guess I have to get used to it. Just wish they would raise prices 1% on everybody (that would be 50 cents on a $50 bill) to crowd source the upcharge, and quit nickel and diming customers. Oh well ... just my opinion. After waiting approximately 30 minutes before the manager/waiter Rey H came to finally take our order by that point we to decided to leave without eating He had taken an order of another table and they received their food before he came back our table and asked if we were ready to order. Totally inattentive to us. We told him how upset we were and he demanded that we leave. We did and on the way out he asked my age. Which is 64 and then called me a dumb broad. We have always enjoyed our dinner out at Pepe's! The staff is always friendly! We never had to wait too long for anything. We usually get the steak fajita salad and steak or chicken quesadillas. Service was fine and the food is so so, or acceptable for a chain menu. My review is aimed at their online website which offers Thursday Margaritas for $4.99, but when the bill arrives we're charged $6.99 and when I questioned the waiter I was told the website is from 2016. Ownership should be responsible for what prices they promote. This establishment also charged a service fee for using credit without even giving the diner an option to pay cash. read more

The food did not have much flavoring. I asked the waiter why there were no vegetables in the Mexican Rice, he told me there is never vegetables in the rice, only the same as Spanish Rice. Did not like his attitude. We have eaten at many Mexican Restaurants on our trips from Virginia, Indiana, California and Kentucky, and I must admit not all offered vegetables, however most did. A recipe from Puebla, Mexico does offer vegetables and (optional) 1-2 serrano peppers while the rice is cooking to enhance flavor. So, do not talk down to me as this waiter has, in my opinion he has tarnished the Pepe's Restaurant chain. With the price of eating out becoming more expensive, customer service should be paramount, listen to the customer, you never know who you are speaking to or about. One star is the lowest I can post. I came in on a Sunday evening it wasn't very crowded it was more crowded over on the canteen the side I set the dining room I was created probably brought out some hot chips salsa and water. I ordered a Tecate with a cold glass. looked over the menu to side have one of my favorites Tostada dinner only the two tonight. I ordered the beef with extra sour cream on the side. the food came out promptly nice and hot looked excellent rice and the beans and sour cream one thing I did learn though is not to have them put salsa on the rice I like the rice just plain Mexican rice no salsa. I was able to take my time relax enjoy dinner was not pushed or felt rushed at all food was very good everything for the value was fine just under 20 bucks 19.55. with tip came out to an even 24 bucks. I order from this Pepes pretty regularly and have always ordered online to ensure my special instructions are on. Easy stuff too, like "no pico" or "corn tortillas plz." Today was my final straw with ordering from here and being quiet about the mess ups. This location can continually mess up our order or like my most recent send me someone else's order. I've been going to Pepe's thru the change of ownerships since it's opened back around 2006. The new owners are most definitely the most pathetic. The fact is Ray is a smug loser that try's to grab as much money as possible from his family's pocket as he can. Perhaps he doesn't get over on them, but he circles around the restaurant like a vulture waiting for the wolves to finish. I have observed his demeanor every time we have come in there. He is one of those people that is most likely disappointed with himself and others that he has to work for a living. Let's talk about their steak, even though I'd rather discuss Juan (someone associated with the ownership) Hope he gets soap on a rope but something tells me Ray is mucho busy trying to get mucho tables. Anyhow I've ordered the Tierra y Mar about 6 times and the steak is a lesser quality than any Pepe's I've been to!! But whoever is in back should have a court order/binding resolution against him/her to never prepare anyones food again. So I've obviously stopped ordering a full steak due to the cook on it mainly. Ordered a Mayan this time and the steak in the taco was over cooked, bland, and gray. The enchilada was super dry and not good. My favorite item on the menu has been tampered with since the new ownership. The chili con queso is supposed to come in a tortilla bowl for anyone that is unaware. Also it should have a garnish of beans as well. The tortilla bowl was lined with a cheddar to prevent it from leaking everywhere, which would change the color/flavor/consistency. I don't expect a waiter to stand just out of ear shot with a towel draped over their forearm awaiting my next request. I don't think most people in the service industry these days even know how to be exceptional wait staff like that. That primarily is due to the ownership of these types of places that don't want to pay their employees anything but the bare minimum, and the absolute minimum amount of employees (like Ray Ray Whitaker)! These people don't care because they make more tips but the staff never accommodates everyone perfectly. I'm sure they will always expect a 20% tip even if you aren't happy as a consumer. I walked in at 12 noon, I was the only one in there. This place has so many issues. They should go have lunch at the pepes in Naperville, and they would learn so much. First, they need to bring back the buffet ASAP. Next, they need to have lunch specials, especially when you don't have a Buffet. The bathroom is completely unacceptable. There is writing on the wall, the paint is chipping badly, the floor is run down, and there was garbage and toilet paper all over the floor. When I was the only one in there, there is no reason why The bathroom wouldn't be immaculate! Now onto the food: The chips are mediocre, the salsa is bland, and the beef tacos are way too greasy. All of these options are superb at many of the other locations. The service: again, since I was only one in there, they should be practically waiting by my table for anything I need. Sadly, I ran out of water and there was no one in sight. I went for a good four minutes being very thirsty. And when you are having a lot of hot sauce, that can really put a damper on your meal! there is no reason they can't bring this restaurant on par with the Naperville pepes. Horrible service by Rey H. We waited to be acknowledged and after 10 minutes we were finally asked for our drink order. We went 2 rounds of drinks before ordering our meals. Our bill was $125.79 for the evening. We finished our meal and sat with dirty dishes under our noses for 36 minutes until I moved them to the ledge next to our table. Even the the bus boy ignored the dishes as well as our server. I had to get up and finally ask for a to go box. We were served our bill and Rey never came back so we took the bill to the front to pay. HORRIBLE SERVICE!! A $125 meal and I've had better service at a drive thru!!!!! Never again!!! The 6 of us that ate chicken tacos got diarrhea several hours later. Those of us that had beef or pork tacos were fine. I called to report this & the manager denied it was their food. I asked that he check on his cooks... see if they are following procedures. He got defensive & said their procedures had not changed in years. "But are they following them?" I asked... he insisted there was no need to check. Well, we won't be going there again until it's under new management. This has always been a favorite of mine. But last 2 visits the food was disappointing. I ordered steak tacos. My friend had beef tacos. My steak was soft and tasted more like pot roast. My friend said her ground beef was almost mushy. There was plenty of meat but textures are off. Different type of meat being used? Or over marinated? Have been coming to this location for many years, and recently, things have steadily fallen apart. Tonight proved to be the final straw as the service and integrity of the server hit an all time low. None of the staff seemed happy to be there, and our server was no different. Slamming drinks on the table, making a veiled effort to check on us, mixing up a two meal order, and finally trying to overcharge us and then blatantly lying about the menu prices proved too much to return. I will also mention that this place charges a 3.5% credit card fee too. The server was rude, then got nasty when I questioned the bill. Although the prices have risen sharply, this interaction wasn't about the cost, rather how she handled herself. A server with a poor attitude AND high prices, has brought an end to a 15 year relationship. There are way too many other places to spend our time and money where we feel appreciated. I can sum up my experience at this Pepe's in two words: Amateur Hour. Talk about a big ball of suck! Where to start? The server couldn't serve, the cooks couldn't cook, and the manager didn't know how to interact with customers. Granted, it's a Mexican food franchise and not fine dining, but this place fell below even the most basic expectations. My wife's dinner was especially atrocious. It was a combo plate and everything came out soggy. When we pointed it out, the manager claimed it was supposed to be that way. As if all Mexican food is served soggy. My grandfather has been coming to this location for the last 10-12 years to celebrate the end of a busy working season with all his employees. Typically bringing in a party size of about 30-35 people. For starters, no one was greeted until all were present and seated. So we waited about 15-20 minutes for drinks. As soon as we walked in, we were told that no one in their staff was informed of the price deals they had offered over the phone, and they changed the prices of drinks originally offered as well as the meal options we were presented with. The whole ordeal was completely mishandled. The server(s) didn't address more than two party members unless it was to take their orders, and ignored the rest. Every request seemed a burden, and our male server clearly had a horrible time tending to our party and didn't hide showing it at all! Overall horrible experience, will not be back :( read more
