I came here yesterday was told to seat anywhere. They served chips and salsa which were delicious. My father and law got the steak hamburger with green chile which he adored, my wife got chicken tenders as she's not a big fan on Hispanic food and I got the combination plate which was HUGE and full of flavor. The world has voted. Hatch green chilies are the top chilies in the world. Rating a restaurant that is actually in Hatch means adding an immediate star to the rating. They simply have the best ingredients to work with. In this case, the Pepper Pot should be an over-average Mexican food stop. Nothing's so simple in Hatch, and that means that every plate you'll have (even from a cart on a sidewalk) has been taken up a notch... except for the coffee. Don't order drinks. The drinks range between generic and sub-par. We ordered the chilaquiles. Simply put, these were the best chilaquiles I've had in Stateside. Win! The price is medium to low. Bonus round! From the places I've found in Hatch, this has become my favorite stop to sit down and savor some chilies. read more

There is NO doubt - THIS PLACE ROCKS! I recently took a road-trip with 4 other adults - in the same car - from San Diego to Carlsbad, New Mexico. It was cramped quarters and one heck of a drive. The Pepper Pot made it worth all the effort! I'm a HUGE chili fan... and since Hatch - The World Chili Capitol - was only a 90 minute detour, we just HAD to stop. My Magellan GPS had this place listed, so we set a way-point, and headed into Hatch. I placed a call to the restaurant while in route... and they confirmed for me that I'd seen them on TV. When we arrived, we were greeted warmly, and joined the local lunch crew for a meal. Chips & salsa were delivered shortly after we got seated. The stuff was SO good... I can't put it into words. I must have consumed a quart of the salsa. It was addictive, and fresh as could be. Arguably, chili fans will know that the best possible platform to taste-test a fresh chili is to make it into a chili relleno. Let me just say it this way... I'd marry the chef (if female) - sight unseen - and pay a hefty dowry to do it. (My wife would understand, right?) It was INCREDIBLE!!! If you're coming to Hatch, NM expressly for the flavor of green chili... skip everything and every place else. The Pepper Pot should be your destination. Kind, warm, friendly service, THE BEST FOOD... and an INCREDIBLE Chili Relleno!!! I still have dreams of the place... and would gladly choose this place for my last meal on Earth. One last note: When returning to San Diego, our party unanimously voted to again make the 90 minute detour from our route to eat here just once more. Great little cafe in Hatch, NM. The chile is very unique. The red is bright red and almost floral. The green is more like gravy with chile added. It was delicious though. This will be a regular stop on our passes through Hatch. The salsa is to die for. read more

Walking into this cafe, we weren't sure if we were to wait for the waitress or seat ourselves. We heard dishes clanking & walked toward the kitchen. The waitress, put her dishes down, and greeted us. She was very friendly! The salsa served with the chips was quite spicy & very yummy! I ordered the Chili Rellenos with chicken, & my husband had the same but with beef. The difference between the red and green sauce is that for some reason their green sauce has been spicier, per the waitress. I have never seen Chilis so large - they are 10" long! We just moved to this area from Chicago so we have no idea! The food was outstanding! So flavorful! The flour tortilla that comes with the meal, was so fresh! We may have to stop on our way back! Recently went with my service animal and the owner made us leave and discriminated us for my service animal. I would like to state that my "trained service animal" was causing no disturbance and we were seated away from all the other customers. I tried to talk with the owner at the restaurant and she said she can ask whatever she wants and when I tried to correct her she started raising her voice telling me that she has had "lots of training on this"? I called back to educate them on service animals and they lied and said the owner was not there ( even tho she was) because we had just left moments earlier and eventually I was able to speak to her and she did not let me talk at all and told me not to bother her. Instead of taking a moment of kindness and patience and listening to where they went wrong she hung up on me. I have included some information so hopefully this will not happen to anyone else (link at the bottom) I hope the owner will educate herself as she is ignorant of the subject. The owner should also practice better customer service as she was aggressive and rude, her behavior was disgusting and she was 100% in the wrong. We will not be back as she violated my rights. we also have video of how we were talked to when we called back. I was happy to have stopped here. The food was great. We tried their signature burger and also a Taquitos plate. No complaints at all. The green chile is good but lacks a little heat. The red had a sweet after taste, pretty good but I've had spicier. The salsa was some of the best I've tried! Very good salsa. It's a slow day in Hatch, and we stopped in for a bite. I had the Pepper Pot burrito. Green and red pork with Christmas tree sauce (green and red), served with rice and beans. The beans and rice were solid. The green pork was delicious. The red pork was out of this world. Incredible. This was a great dish. My wife had a chili relleno burger, no bun. Served with fresh cut French fries. The burger was a little over cooked (we usually go medium rare), but three flavor was good, and it worked great with the relleno. The fries were excellent. Do not waste your time waiting here if you're going to the chile festival. The food is OK. It is good, but not the best. The staff will lie to you about wait times, and we ended up waiting more than 2 hours for a table because of the hype. If you're not in Hatch during a busy time, it's probably a good bet. read more

Very disappointed with this place, as a tourist who intentionally stopped by to try their hatch on the menu. The server seemed bothered explaining about the food when I asked questions, so I decided to give it a try no matter what! We got the chips and salsa like everyone else and then completely been forgot about! The server did not come to ask any more questions nor letting us know about our order. We waited 40 minutes for our food completely ignored, while the locals who were at other tables and knew each other ( you could tell as it is a little village), got the server's attention. My wife and I don't often eat out at Mexican restaurants because most places use a spice we strongly dislike. We were passing through Hatch and decided to take a gamble since ratings were pretty good here. We were extremely satisfied with our entire experience! You walk in and sit wherever you like, no need to wait. They serve you chips and salsa. The salsa, of course, is made with green Chile and has some good heat. The food we ordered had good portions and the flavors were excellent. I never expect a lot from beans and rice but they were so tasty! That alone gets 5 stars from me because I've never had great rice at a Mexican restaurant, ever! I really enjoyed the flautas I ordered and my wife exclaimed her satisfaction with the fajitas she ordered. The service was just as good as the food. I highly recommend this place if you're looking for some true Mexican cuisine. I know we'll be stopping by again when we're in the area. I drove four hours each way from Sierra Vista, AZ just to eat at the Pepper Pot. The Yelp reviewers were key motivators but when Anthony Bourdain looks into the camera and utters the words "Best enchiladas...ever" well then a guy just has to listen. The experience was worth every mile driven. I had the combo plate with a relleno, a taco, one red enchilada, one green enchilada, as well as rice and beans. This was the freshest and most delicious tasting Mexican food I have ever eaten. It has redefined what I thought was good. Everything that came before is just "Meh" to me now. And when the friendly and efficient waitress tells you everything on the plate is hot so be sure to "blow before you bite," she is speaking the truth (in so many contexts). I will make this pilgrimage anytime I am in the US southwest. That is how impressive this experience was for me. read more

This place Rocks! We went the weekend of the Chile Festival and after the parade and a walk around the fairgrounds decided to stop here for lunch. Thanks to Tony Bourdain - he's right, best enchiladas EVER! Actually, the enchiladas themselves are pretty standard, but the sauce...oh the sauce! Personally, I'm not the biggest fan of Mexican and New Mexican food, but this stuff was phenomenal. Both the green chile and red chile sauces were the best I've ever eaten anywhere. And the chile relleno was amazing. Not sure if it was because this is chile season, or if they're this good all the time, but the relleno was fresh and absolutely delicious. We enjoyed it so much that we went again the next day for lunch before we left town. So if you're headed to Hatch, driving near Hatch or just in your car one day with some time to spare, take the trip to The Pepper Pot. You will not be sorry. read more

My husband & I stopped here for lunch while trekking into Hatch for fresh chiles. We both ordered the Chile Rellenos...yum. Seriously some of the best I've ever had. They are battered so lightly, the chile isn't lost in a typical eggy mush. The seeds are left in, too (you've been warned, get over it!) Proof positive of a beautiful fresh pepper. You also have the option to upgrade to a stuffed & smothered relleno--add shredded chicken & sauces "Christmas" style to have one green sauced & one red, even with the extra charge it is so reasonable! With all the positive reviews I really WANTED to like this more than I did. I may have hit an "off day" or something, but the food wasn't superb or anything. (Note my other reviews and you'll see I have a tendency to be very forgiving & talk up places if I feel they deserve it. I'm not a cranky critic...) The salsa is OFF THE HOOK hot! Enjoyed that, tho it did make me sweat & almost cry. lol Had the combo platter with a Chile Relleno (decent), Taco (average), two Enchiladas (meh-tho I did really like the green sauce), rice (meh) and refried beans (meh-they were pasty). It's a diner-type place without a lot of ambiance, but I wasn't looking for that anyway. The waitresses were having a very racy conversation (loud) which I was entertained by, but wouldn't have wanted my Mom to hear. Having lived in NM for just over a year now, I've seen and heard lots of references to Hatch chiles. I thought this was just a chile variety, you know, like a Bell pepper or Roma tomato. While driving on I-25 south recently I saw signs for Hatch, NM. "Oh," I said to my passenger, "Hatch is an actual PLACE?" We both had a good laugh at my expense. Anyway, we stopped for lunch and she suggested Pepper Pot. Man on man, I'm glad she did. This place was really terrific. Having become an unwilling NM ex-pat missing NM Mexican food I found this to be the perfect place in Hatch to get the flavor I so miss. Refried beans are creamy and rich, crispy chips with salsa with good heat but not killer hot, hefty bean and cheese burrito with a side of Spanish rice and choice of red or green sauce. I thought that the staff did an excellent job seating people, taking orders, and serving the food with a full house. We did have to wait but not unreasonable with the crowd. Extremely disappointed!!! I've been here before and the food is good. However, me and my family stopped there on 3/17/22 at 1:45 only to be told by the waitress that they were closed. I explained to her that we came from San Diego, CA on our way to Texas and made it a point to stop there. All she could say was "I'm sorry but the grill is already off." To the owner, you advertise that your hours are 6:00 - 2:00 but shut your kitchen down before that time. Why bother posting hours? If you are shutting down early so that you and your staff can leave by 2:00 then maybe you should advertise an earlier closing time so that people don't waste fuel and time traveling there. Also, don't post take out from 6:00 - 3:00 if that's not the case. The same waitress looked at me like I had lobsters coming out of my ears because I asked about ordering something to go.
