Was searching online for a good Chinese reataurant that we haven't tried and came across this place. Ambiance - 4/5: it's a small place but they have quite a bit of tables. If you order a lot of items or big items, you might run out of space on the table. Otherwise, the restaurant is well lit. Food - 4/5: the menu gives me old school menu or magazine type vibes (meaning it's like different menus put together as one - the lettering is different). I overheard a conversation between them and a family that their menu changes every Thursday so it might account for the mismatched fonts. Got the Hainese chicken on ricr and the pork chop with sausage on rice. Both dishes was a combo which surprised us because it didn't indicate that for the Hainanesese chicken. $12.99 for that combo is an absolute steal! Came with a chinese style soup and it was really good. The chicken was lightly seasoned but mixed with the available sauces (fish sauce and ginger sauce) and rice, it was nicely balanced. We ordered a cold Hong Kong milk tea with the meal. They gave us liquid glucose on the side so we could control the amount of sugar. With the other meal, we chose iced lemon tea. I had it with regular sugar levels and it was fine. The portion size and proportion between rice and meat/vegetables was well balanced. I commonly run into the problem of too much rice but I did not have that problem here. The saltiest food was the sausage but that's to be expected. Service - 5/5: I never give this score but their service truly impressed me. The only time they rushed me was in the beginning because afternoon tea was almost over. As soon as I said we aren't, they just said, ok, take your time. The person on break was quick to direct us to the bathroom. We didn't even need to ask. A typical small Hong Kong style coffee shop serving a variety of mostly Hong Kong style dishes. Can get crowded during the lunch period. Ordered the Ox tongue & Dan Dan noodles with fried pork. Ox tongue smothered in brown gravy with spaghetti & vegs. Ox tongue portion was on point, spaghetti and vegs were not seasoned too well, luckily enough gravy to go around and did the job. Also added pepper for extra flavor. Dan Dan noodles arrived in a nice thick peanutty dan dan soup base with the sliced pork on the side. Pork was cooked crispy and tender. Thick soup base clung well to the noodles as I eagerly shamelessly slurped each strand, was I disturbing the adjacent customers, hell no as they were also slurping. Not sure what the name Pepper Wok refers to but they should rename their restaurant appropriately to "Slurping Noodles'. Staff were friendly and efficient, it helps if you speak Cantonese (no surprise here as you're in Thornhill). Appears many customers are regulars so you know it's going to be good. Both dishes come with a hot drink; add $1.25 of you prefer cold. It's been awhile since I've had Dan Dan noodles and this dish did not disappoint, I'll be back again to get my slurp on. Ordered their Ox tongue w/ brown gravy and spaghetti (can also get it with rice) and their Dan Dan noodles with fried pork. Ox tongue portion was nicely balanced with the gravy, spaghetti/vegs were not seasoned so needed to add some pepper/salt, luckily there was enough gravy to go around. The Dan Dan noodles arrived in a large bowl of peanutty soup, fried pork was sliced in separate in another dish. Pork was crispy and tender, noodles were plentiful and the thick soup clunge to the noodles as I eagerly slurped every strand shamelessly. Busy busy place during weekend lunch. I have ordered 4 lunch set and 3 are excellent. The lunch set are mostly around $14-16 which comes with HK milk tea and coffee. Squid noodle in soup have excellent big squid ball . Hainan chicken is smooth and juicy. Seafood fried rice has lots of shrimp and some scallops. All serves fast and hot. Great prices and tasty food! They have a very simple menu (especially compared to some other HK cafes) with super affordable meal options for $9-13 each, or around $6 for snack items! The best way to describe the service is very quick and efficient. They took our order and prepared the food all within 5-10 mins. The restaurant was modestly close to capacity, so I wouldn't consider it too busy despite being around 12:30-1pm at noon. Not sure if staff can understand English, as we ordered in Cantonese, but it shouldn't be an issue if you point to the menu item. I suspect this place may be cash/debit only, but did not confirm. I would air on the side of caution to have cash funds available, as it's possible that if credit transactions are available, there may still be a transaction fee. We got the smoke salmon pasta with rose sauce (large size) which comes with soup + drink (we got milk tea), and the pork chop with vermicelli in curry soup and double egg + toast, which also comes with drink. The pasta sauce had a nice sweetness and creaminess to it! I love my sauce super saucy, and there was a nice sauce-to-pasta ratio. The pasta is cooked to a noodle-like consistency, very HK style lol so don't expect al dente pasta since it's just not a thing. The smoked salmon I was pleasantly surprised was not super salty, so when paired with the rose sauce it was perfection! I got a large size for this dish, and it was a good size to make me full + share some. I think the small size would be a better portion size for me in the future, but the large is not *that* big in my opinion, so judge accordingly! So this would've been a 5 star had it not been for the current price of the hainanese chicken rice. I've seen it go from $11.75 to a whopping $14.50 pre-tax currently and it's getting harder and harder to justify ordering it. That being said, it's still the best hainanese chicken in town (neck and neck w/ restoran malay but I give this one the edge). Completely de-boned, chicken is super moist/tender and the rice actually has the perfect chicken stock flavour steeped into it (not dry at all). Back when it was $11.75 this was an absolute steal. It was what cantonese ppl like to call "peng, leng, jeng". Now it's "not peng, still leng and still jeng". Had to drop them down to a 4 star because recently, they changed the takeout container to a smaller one (went from a large, circular one to a rectangular one) and so the overall portion size decreased drastically. So essentially, the price has been jacked all the way up AND you get less food now. Hint #1 - loyal repeated customers who rather wait than going next door. Ambiance was no frills, down to earth neighborhood style and dated. Hint #2 - the root (beginning) of Hong Kong tea cafe was cheap and good; prettiness is not important. So Pepper Wok is a traditional HK tea cafe. There is no contemporary nice decor and patrons expect the saving be translated to lower prices. Hint #3 - prices are LOW. In some cases, the value (volume - price ratio) is better than food courts. Now we can talk about food quality and services. Food quality is A-OK. Some hits and misses. We ordered Hainanese Chicken Rice and Smoked Salmon on Pasta. Hainanese chicken (deboned) was overcooked; chicken oil rice was *super awesome*. I guess the chicken oil was mostly drained out and fed to the rice (LOL). Smoked salmon could not go wrong. Pasta was overcooked but tasty nevertheless. Milk tea was quite good. Services was awesome. Very friendly and efficient. The servers treated us like old neighbors (we were not). The earlier cyber bullying incident makes more and more people notice this restaurant, including me. The restaurant is out of my neighbourhood, but they have good quality of food and drinks. So we don't mind to drive ~30mins there. I was craving for their Deep Fried Chicken Leg with Curry and Roti during my pregnancy... (yay, I had the same dish the night before I gave birth too, lol.). Now my son is almost 3 months old and I still love this dish. The Chicken Leg is so crispy outside and juicy inside, with a nice touch of seasonal salad... It's just soo good!! Their Charcoal Boiled Tender Pork and Scrambled Eggs with Truffle Sauce on Rice is very good too (what a long name tho). We only see this dish on their menu during Spring and Summer. This was my first time here. The staff was very patient and friendly, and apologetic when they informed us the pho was not available. The restaurant itself is quite small, and I'd say max.4 ppl if you plan to eat here with companions. My family and I have smaller frames, so the spacing was just right although I'd say not exactly comfortable. The menu is quite limited, which isn't necessarily a bad thing... Just don't expect too much. It was already surprising that they didn't have pho available during actual lunch time. It should be a staple... So why didn't they make sure they had this in stock? My order of spaghetti in soup with luncheon meat came with HK style French toast and a drink. The spaghetti in soup had some "choy sum" which was a pleasant surprise; luncheon meat was just one squared slice, nothing special, and portion was smaller than expected, but ok. The French toast could be better with a bit more peanut butter. It was nice that I was offered an option of peanut butter or jam. The egg sandwich was my companion's and that was pretty good! Would I come again? I'm not quite sure... There are many other choices around. I have to note that I did appreciate the patrons were all very mindful, no one spoke loudly in this cramped environment. Service 3/5 Typical Hong Kong style cafe service, which is usually quick and doesn't come with a smile. It is quite the norm as oddly as that sounds. So if you expect it to be smiles and friendly, you will dislike this place and probably rate it a low score. Food 3/5 I have been to this restaurant on four occasions. It is really a hit or a miss depending on what you order. The first time I went there I ordered the bolognese pasta which came with a salad. It was one of the weirdest odd tasting salad I have ever tasted. I didn't enjoy it. The pasta was fine though. And my friends enjoyed their food. Boneless chicken was great for lazy person like me... soft and well flavoured. The rice though definitely the star of the dish, fragranted and garnished with ginger and garlic. Warning, it is a small restaurant that fits about 32 people so if its fully seated you're only about 1 inch from the other person's jacket. My mom really enjoys eating here on the weekends, although it's crazy packed ALL THE TIME. However, there is a very fast turnover rate so you're never really waiting very long. Some Warnings: 1. The parking lot is always crowded and hectic. 2. The restaurant is small so come with a party of 4 or less if you want to be seated quickly. Hainan Chicken with Oil Rice with Drink: The rice is actually my fave part of this dish - it's fried with garlic and so aromatic! The dish also comes with veggies. Pros: Good value Cons: Not too much variety Came by here for a Saturday afternoon lunch. Pepper Wok is your standard HK style cafe. It's not the best, but it's not the worst. You will get good value for your money though. Pepper Wok is a pretty small place. They manage to fit 8-10 tables in there but if it's busy, expect to wait a little bit. Looking at the menu, they have a lot of categories, but not many items per category. It's a pretty bis menu page wise, but in the end, there's not too many items to choose from. There are daily specials to choose from and those are the only ones that will come with a drink. Anything else, and you'll have to pay full price for the drink. I ordered the baked chicken on rice with mushroom sauce and my GF ordered the baked fish on spaghetti with cream sauce. An egg sandwich was also ordered for my little one. The food comes out pretty quick after you order. The dishes were all pretty well done and had good portions for the price. It was an enjoyable meal throughout. I'm used to HK style cafes now offering a drink with any entree purchase so I missed having a drink with my entree. It's not a deal breaker, but something noteworthy. The service here was pretty standard, nothing of note to mention. Basically, my visit here seemed to follow that theme here. It's not too noteworthy, nothing special, nothing horrible. The menu also looked like it hasn't been updated in years, and reading the reviews here looks to affirm my claim. I ordered the Emmentaler Sausages and Pork Chop on Spaghetti, as not many HK style cafe places offer German sausages. It came with a drink and a Chinese-style starter soup. The iced lemon tea was quite good, and the starter soup was okay as well. As for my main course, I have to say the sausages were better than I thought..they were at least the large and juicy kind. For $8.99 I honestly didn't expect much, but I actually enjoyed my food overall. The pork chop wasn't the best I've had, but I've definitely had worse out there. Service is as good as it gets, considering there's only a single lady taking orders, pouring tea/water, making drinks, AND doing the cashier. They could hire one more, but the size of the restaurant definitely limits that. We ordered take out lunch today and the food was excellent. We had the Tan Tan noodles and Hainan chicken rice. The portions were generous and the price was very reasonable Their service was prompt and courteous. This little restaurant definitely has heart!! There's plenty of parking in the street plaza however you need to walk an extra few steps to get to the entrance since there's some construction work in the parking area at present but is very manageable. We absolutely love this eatery and will go back for sure when it opens for dine-in next week. Can't wait read more

I think they are under new management. Generally was known for good value food and decent portion sizes. The portion sizes have dropped substantially. By way of example, they frequently have a dish with porkchop, chicken fillet, rice and egg and pickled vegetables. It used to be that you would get one porkchop and one chicken fillet. Now they provide obvious half of a pork chop and half of a chicken fillet. Price unchanged. I used to eat here once or twice for lunch during the work-week and it was a treat. i think that this place is better than the three star rating it currently has. it's got a unique twist on traditional hong kong restaurants, which is flavorful and delicious. i really really like the vermicelli that they offer, it's not the usual threadlike hard rice noodle. it's chewier in a good way. on the other hand, though, they do well at replicating the best / typical things of hong kong cheap cuisine. for example, the sandwiches come in thickly sliced bread, which i think is more fluffy and tastes better than plain old thin toast. they also managed to make the french toast taste basically the same as the ones you get in hong kong, much better than the other places in the gta that i've tried french toasts at. read more
