We visited Pepperjax in Cedar Rapids recently and overall we were pleasantly surprised. My husband and I visited with our two young children. The employees were all very helpful and the manager was working right alongside the employees. They were all very friendly and gave us tips and advice for ordering for kids. The price was okay. We paid $25 for two sandwiches, two kids meals, an order of fries, and a large drink. This is no more than we'd pay at a similar casual dining restaurant like Pancheros, but it's still more expensive than many drive thru places. The food was good. My husband got a steak burrito and really liked it. The fries were hot and fresh, the kids' meals were good. I ordered a chicken philly sandwich. The veggies were fresh and the onions were perfectly caramelized on the grill, which was good. I wasn't sure about the chicken. It tasted okay but it had a texture I'm not familiar with, it tasted almost canned. It was white when the put it on the grill, so it must be pre-cooked somehow. It wasn't a bad taste, but the meat was different than what I've typically had on a chicken Philly before. The store was really clean and it's decorated with local photographs, which were fun to look at. Overall, this was a nice change from typical fast food and we'll probably be back. read more

This is a great rice bowl place and obviously a Philly cheesesteak place. Very informal almost fast food. Au jus and Mushroom sauce are good on philly and spicy ranch on the rice bowl. Great amount of food for small price. read more

This place has some great food. One of my favorite steak sandwiches in town. I recommend getting the steak instead of the chicken as the chicken looks like its fake. Queso is good, salsa is okay. Always had good service until recently. Went in for dinner about 630 and ordered two sandwiches and an order of fries. We were informed that they would need to make a fresh batch of fries. It didn't dawn on us until we were about to walk out the door that our fries never arrived. My boyfriend brought this to the cashiers attention and was given nothing but blank stares by the employees. They did not offer fries to go, a refund or any type of compensation. Instead they continued to stare at him and each other like a deer in head lights. We left immediately after he told them that we didn't need them anyway. Probably won't be going back anytime soon if this is how customers are treated. read more

Philly is good but the customer service is something to be desired. Ate around 2 this afternoon. There were 4-5 other tables with guest. All other tables were dirty! Salad dressing /au jus bar was a disaster and out of serving cups. I had to move trays and dinning remnants from previous diners to have a table. The floor was dirty with croutons all over and also ground in to the floor in areas. There were 2 people behind us inline and as soon as they paid all staff behind the counter disappeared. GONE. Not out to clean the dinning area but gone. I returned to the front to ask for serving cup for the ah jus along with another guest and no one came. One of the guest who just paid just stood there looking around to try to find a table clean to sit at. I gave up waiting for my cup but when I looked out back the door that goes to outdoor seating I could see staff out there laughing and having a good time. There is NO service mentality with your staff! We got our Philly's thrown in to go boxes because they were out of clean baskets (because they were all out on tables). My husband opened his and over half the meat fell out on the table because of how it was placed in the box. Guest continue to come in and had to wait for staff to reappear to take orders. One staff came out but still no one cleaning tables. This guest had to move items from her table to sit and you could see the disgust in her face when she had to ask for a rag to clean her table. This is. It our first bad experience. We have stopped multiple Saturdays before because it's close to where we run errands and live it's convenient to stop at and we like the food. Each Saturday it seems the service got worse. We visited the Day of National Philly day and had a great experience, because I assume management was onsite. Management needs to do some surprise visits on Saturdays! Just because you have good food, doesn't mean your customer service can suffer. You've lost two regular customers because of our experience today. read more

This is good philly. Definitely avenged the horrible Philly I had last weekend. General manager and assistant manager work incredibly well together and they are so fast. They also work effectively to keep the place clean while making a ton of food. Other kid stuck in the middle on topping is very slow lol but he's learning I guess! Good, but no flow, and very little toppings. Flow: one thing that is irritating about these sort of restaurants, that few have conquered, aside from Baja Fresh, which is no where in the Cedar Rapids area, and something we can certainly do with, is, the fact that you, the customer, has to multitask. No customer should have to multitask to get a meal, particularly if your workday has been stressing enough as it is. Allow me to elaborate. *You walk in *You specify your protein choice *Once done, the toppings person asks, "burrito? Or bowl?" *After you've made your specification, the topping person throws the shell in the hot irons. *Next, the checkout lady is confirming your order, and asking you "would you like a drink or cookie?" So now you are making your way to the checkout. *After confirming you'd like a drink and/ or cookie, the topping lady edges in with, "Queso? Black beans, pinto beans or rice?" So, you scooch back over there briefly to pick out the base elements of your burrito(or bowl). *The checkout lady has your price for you now, and so you better go back over there and finalize the transaction. *You insert your card...Approved! *Next, it's "Salsa? Cheese? Or sauce? So, you schooch back over to her; "Oh, what kind of sauces are there?" *"You get as far as saying "Cheese, and sal-" but now you are ready to sign. *You hobble back to the register, sign, and now you can finish asking the toppings lady as to what the sauce options were that she had mentioned" and confirm the rest of your order...or do you? Because, now, in the midst of the confusion you may have forgotten to collect your receipt; "Sir, do you want a copy of your receipt?" It's this whole "not knowing where you want to be," or "where you should be," and I hate that stress of being torn in directions, as a customer. Toppings: Not much to say here, except, "Where's the corn salsa? Where's the Guac? Why do the hot sauces not have names/ associations, besides "hot" and "mild?" To me, that shows this place has no love for their product. I asked the girl, "what's your hottest sauce?" And she says, "The HOT sauce, is our hottest sauce, with the other option being mild." Where's the green/ verde sauce? Where's the chipotle? Etc.? read more

If you have not been here yet you will kick yourself when you finally try it! The service is unmatched anywhere. The employees actually seem to enjoy their job and greet you with a smile and engage you throughout the process. What a difference being personable makes! There is a young man that works their that takes customer service to the world class level everytime but everyone is a joy to deal with there. Famous for their Philly cheese steak for a reason! employees not following safety practices. not wearing any hats or hair nets. not all wearing gloves to handle ready to eat foods. these are definite food safety violations. all would have been cited by a state inspector. you should never be so busy as to ignore safe food handling. I value my well being more than a sandwich! read more
