Pepper Jax started in Omaha and has spread into a 5-state area. It is still headquartered here and I like that. I came to Pepper Jax in the Old Market to see if it's a more affordable spot than other places to eat here. And...with my bill coming to $15 for an entree and tip, it's not, really. But it is faster than other places and is convenient. I got a rice bowl with sausage and all the grilled vegetables, including jalapeño and banana peppers. She asked me if I wanted something (I forget what they called it but it is the juice from the pepper jars). Yes please! I don't like cold toppings on hot rice bowls (lettuce? No thanks). But I did get more jalapeños and banana peppers put on there. "You like it spicy." She said; she made sure things were the way I liked them. I appreciate that. There were not a lot of customers dining in (zero actually, although there were some people getting food to go). It is a large space there, and dimly-lit. It did not seem appealing in the winter evening, though it is probably nice on a sunny day. So I took mine back to my apartment. It is a big meal. I was honestly astonished at how great my sub ended up being after walking in. I didn't know what I was getting into upon seeing the ordering station when I first arrived - as it seemed a bit grungy. However, what came out of that were some great service staff and an even better sub sandwich. Kudos to PepperJax! Quick casual with a focus on service. I wish there was more to it, but really it's a great concept. When I ask for a veggie philly, they ask if I would like the grill cleaned and I reply "yes". they kind of make a big deal by shouting "Cleaning Grill!" and they then proceed to clean the entire surface of the grill, change utensils, new gloves and start my food. It's like they are preparing to birth my sandwich and they do it every time and with a smile. It isn't that hard to cook mushrooms and peppers, melt some cheese on them and put it in a bun. I wanted and ordered a shredded pork burrito, with large fries. The manager was there and also got me the "large fries". My order was wrong and the fries look like a small portion. I know thats not lrge bc i have gone to the 72nd and Pacific location this is not large, in fact looks like small or less than. I'll start with this... Ooooooooooohweeeeeeeeeeee!!! Now that that's out of the way, my review. The bread, soft and sturdy. Holds up to whatever condiments placed on the sandwich. Next, the cheese. A Swiss/American mix; salty and a bit sweet. Melted to perfection, binding the bread with the main attraction. The steak! Hot, savory and plentiful. Door Dash delivery tonight (4/10/2020), between 7 & 7:30 pm. It took over 15 minutes to get my order. Only one cook and a lady manning the register, phone and Door Dash orders. She exclaimed that 8 Door Dash orders came in a row, and they'd probably run out of food. A lady came in to pick up her order. The cook pointed to it, but the lady at the register was too frantic and dismissed it. After 5-8 minutes the lady customer asked for her food. The employee dropped the food on the counter and said it just got done (when it clearly didn't). The female customer called the employee a "b&*ch" as she walked to the door and the employee said, "Well, we don't need your $10!" In my full-time job of 21 years, where I deal with the general public, I would be fired for this behavior. I understand the frustration with being short handed, but when you are the face of the business that employs you, you do not act this way. I prefer chicken, but the steak must be great bc that's what everybody else is getting. #againstthegrain If you're looking for a little extra heat, ask for your food to be "fireballed," which I'm pretty sure is just jalapeño juice but it's delicious all the same. And idk what they put on the French fries but they are crazy good. Especially with their ranch, which is some of the best I've had. This location is real convenient and nice and clean and friendly. Also if you're just in the downtown area you can grab you something to eat and then walk the old market. Going back to the great customer service, the employees make sure that you know your options and what they have to make your choice even better. I'm from the nearby the home of the cheesesteak (we don't call them a "philly"). Late on a Friday night, a couple of my friends and I decided to stop by Pepperjax Grill on 12th and Howard for a quick meal before we headed back to campus. This was my first time ever eating at a Pepperjax, and before setting foot in the restaurant I knew I was in for a treat. Before even entering the restaurant, I was treated to an oasis-like glow of the soft light amongst the rest of the businesses closed in the surrounding area. This location is open until 3:00am on weekends, making it one of the only business still open very late at night. The warm atmosphere continues inside as well, with a pretty simple yet welcoming interior. When going to order, I was greeted by a friendly member of the staff who took care of me through every step from making my order to ringing it up. My favorite part about Pepperjax is that everything is made to order right in front of the customer. It is very similar to Chipotle in that sense. What I had made to order in front of me was the best Philly I've had since actually being in Philadelphia. I had a steak philly with jalapeños, an American and Swiss blend cheese, and ranch. It came out to me on a soft, thick bun that brought the whole thing together. It was incredible. Pepperjax is a great place to go pick up a quick meal because the atmosphere is great, the service is wonderful, and the food is delicious.
